[Q] Root without USB possible? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Sorry if this has already been asked, but I searched and hundreds of results came up, but none of them seemed to answer my question.
I am having issues with my USB port, similar to the problems in other threads. I've tried the cleaning with nail polish remover etc, but whilst it will now charge and doesn't repeatedly start Vlingo randomly, I can't connect to my PC via USB.
I get the message "un-recognised USB device connected", but I have all of the drivers etc installed.
I was wondering if it's possible to root the GS2 without actually using the USB?
I know back in the day of my HTC Magic (awesome device) that I could use the goldcard method and flash files from the SD card, but wasn't sure if this was an option.
Does the mobile Odin offer this capability? Or something that I haven't considered?
I'm not worried about flashing roms etc, but would like to be able to use root apps such as Titanium and Set CPU etc.
(Sorry about the long post )
Cheers.

Yes it's possible just use wireless adb to install Zergrush root, which gives basic root.
For custom kernels (with CWM recovery to flash roms) you do that then manually flash a kernel with the correct dd command from the adb command line.
Edit: My bad I forgot that wireless adb requires root

Mobile odin works only if the phone is already rooted

Basically, no. Not going to happen.
You're better off sending the phone in for warranty service if you're having problems with it before you muck around with it, lest something happens where you can't unroot it, put stock firmware back on, jig it to reset the counter.

I figured as much.
I would send in for warranty , but I've rooted it previously and have flashed updates via odin.
Guess I'll have to go without.
Thanks for the quick response guys.

Update
Sorry to dredge up an old post, but I thought that I'd update for the benefit of anyone who reads this one.
I received an OTA to ICS (no kies!) and am now able to root the device using the method from the following link:

Unroot access Help please.....

Hey guys I have to send back my thunderbolt to VZ, I just got the Charge instead cuz the TB sucked!!
I rooted my TB and all, I was ready to Unroot using the ADB way... I uploaded the 3 files and then it says ADB: no such file for the recovery part.
So Then I wiped my cache and my Partition thinking I was good to go with the upload from Zip through recovery. That didnt work
Now Im trying to get the phone into Download mode so I can connect using Odin. Then Flash a Stock Rom using Odin onto phone....
Also when in Terminal App on phone and get SU permissions and then try ADB: Reboot Download or recovery , I get ------ No Such Tool?
questions are How do I Unroot this Damn phone to send back to VZ???
And how do I flash stock Rom without Odin?
The TB in no way sucks. It will slaughter that POS Charge.
Luke
Odin? isn't that a samsung thing?.. HTC uses RUU's
Thunderbolt doesn't have a download mode.. and when in the terminal on the phone you don't need the adb: part.. just "reboot recovery" and when using adb on the computer don't use a colon ":" either just adb
Anyways.. here is a link to unroot.. it should help
Also.. I went from the Charge to the thunderbolt... much happier... Charge battery life was just about as bad.. if any better its because its a slightly bigger battery

thats what I been following, when I go to the reboot recovery it says no such file
Sorry you are having trouble. Please read this thread:
[HOWTO] Restore to stock for root users and non-root users UPDATED 5/17/2011
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423
It is an update from the method you have been trying. I assume you are still rooted? Follow the first part of the tutorial, it is for rooted phones needing to return to stock. I have used this method a couple of times without issue.
I would suggest starting from the beginning and re- download all of the files. Check mdsum5, painstakingly follow each and every step and you should be returned to stock in about 20 minutes once you have downloaded all of the files.
Odin is not a tool we use with the Thunderbolt. We use ADB shell and Hboot and CWR as means of flashing Roms, radios and other files to our phones. I assume you are at least a bit familiar with these as at some point you rooted your phone.
Another piece of advice, its free and you don't even have to thank me; when you get your new awesome Charge and you start having issues with it and you just can't seem to figure out which key words to rub together in Google to find the magical solution. You may want to avoid going to the Charge forums asking for help stating that the Charge sucks but you people should help me out anyway. You might find that people are more inclined to help you out. I'm just saying.....

[Q] Upgrade to ICS stock firmware or CM9 with no USB?

Hi all,
I've got a Galaxy SII which I have been patiently waiting for the Samsung ICS firmware final to come out, and when it did I plugged into my PC to find I've got the common issue of a dead USB port and the phone is not recognised in Windows/Kies or by Odin in download mode. It charges fine.
I sent it back under warranty to Phones4u and it promptly got sent back with the good old answer "water damaged, no warranty, uneconomical to repair". What a load of crap as it's never been near water or dampness....great.
I've been looking around but can't find any clear instructions on how I might be able to upgrade my beloved phone without USB. Is there any way to do it from SD card in recovery mode? I'd be happy with stock firmware but equally happy moving to CM9 instead as I'm really not happy with the Touchwiz implementation destroying the beauty of ICS.
I'm currently running XWKI4 2.3.4 firmware...any help would be much appreciated!
If you're rooted, you can use Mobile Odin. In order to retain root, you'd need to either use Mobile Odin Pro (unsure if it injects root correctly to ICS yet), or flash a CF-Root kernel instead of the stock one.
Used mobile odin pro and Intratech's frankenstein XWLP3 (no O2 branding), flagged it for root injection and it worked.
I would also first try another cable yours could be damaged ie charges but cant connect for data
also try another USB port on the PC sometimes it forces the reinstall of the drivers
if you can try another computer to eliminate all scenarios
just to make this complete, yes, there are also roms that can be flashed through recovery from sd card, but it requires CWM (clockworkmod) recovery, which usually comes with rooting your phone, which typically requires flashing an insecure kernel through odin (which is not possible for you), so i guess your best bet would be mobile odin, after you have gone through everything else (other cable, other usb port, other pc).
this is the easy way

What does that have to do with anything? He's on GB.

Few questions about rooting..

Hi there, I have been reading around on this forum for some time now but this is my first post and I have a few questions about rooting my UK version of the Galaxy S3.
Just to clarify, I am NOT asking how to root a phone, I already know exactly how to do this and the risks involved etc etc, I just want to know a couple of things about what happens after the root.
1. When a nandroid backup is performed after the phone is rooted, is ROM that is backed up COMPLETELY standard or does it have some remains of the root included? i.e. if I wanted to go back to my stock ROM, will it be exactly as it was or will the phone still have some remains of the root in the backup?
2. Does rooting on its own increase the flash counter? I know flashing a new ROM does, but am unsure whether rooting on its own does this (and yes, I am already aware of TriangleAway )
3. In referance to question 1, does reflashing a completely stock ROM remove the root access? (just in case it has to go back for repairs etc).
4. After rooting does anything change with the stock functions of the phone? e.g. will play store still work ok, will apps still update officially through play store etc. Adding to this, will flashing a custom ROM disable these functions? (the ROM I am possibly looking to install is CM)
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help, I understand a couple of these may be stupid questions but I've searched for a long time and as this will be my first root I just want to be absolutely sure what the process involves

1. Whe you perform a nandroid backup..everything gets backedup..if you are on a rooted rom when doing a backup (you have to be rooted to do this) your rom will have the root when you install the backup again... to remove the root you will have to unroot your device using means given in various thread...you might have to install a stock firmware in download mode using Odin..even the stock ROM you flash via recovery will have root
2. Any action performed in the download mode will increase your flash counter..rooting is done in download mode via Odin so it increases your flash counter..custom roms are flashed in recovery so they dont increase your flash counter..
3. Read point 1 again
4.The functions present after installing a custom ROM depends upon the ROM..read the OP before flashing (ALWAYS)..but if you are not flashing a test ROM..you will get all the fuctions.. in CM9/10 you will get all the google options..you will loose Samsung specific functions..Smart Stay, Smart Beam etc.
Hope it helped...
Thanks for your reply, that helped a lot
Just one more thing in response to your answer about my 1st question - I am currently on the Three network and it comes with a couple of things as standard in the ROM, so is there any way to backup the ROM without being rooted, just in case it has to go back to Three for repair? Or is there somewhere where I can download a completely stock Three branded ROM to keep safe in case I need it in the future?
Thanks

[Q] Root and custom ROM without PC connection (Gingerbread 2.3.3)

Hello, I just got a Samsung Galaxy S2 from a friend (Stock firmware GB 2.3.3)
For some reason I am not able to establish a connection between the phone and the PC.
I tried to install and reinstall Kies and/or the drivers multiple times (and everyone of the other suggestions i found with google) but with no success. The phone recognizes that it's been charged when the cable is plugged in and sometimes the phone even indicates that it's establishing a connection to kies (but this appears randomly, not always). On the PC there's no sign of any connection to the phone, neither Kies connects to it nor the phone is shown as any kind of device in the device-manager or in explorer ("adb devices" and Odin also don't recognize the phone).
Since my fathers S2 (2.3.6 Stock Firmware) connects fine with the same drivers and cable i finally gave up searching for any any other possible reason than a damaged connector on the phone.
So i tried to search for ways to root the phone, put CWM on it and a custom ROM without any PC connection.
I encountered some things like signed custom kernels that should grant you root access, an exploitation, ...
The exploitation didn't work out for my phone, and the kernels I've found are for Jellybean or ICS, so not suitable for my Gingerbread-Firmware,
I've found some older threads on various websites that promised such kernels for Gingerbread, but there were either dead links or nothing suitable for my phone.
So now I'd like to ask the community if anyone knows any signed kernel to gain root access for my phone, or any other way to accomplish my task of upgrading to a custom firmware, or if there's no possible way to do this and I should stop wasting m time on this...
(btw, for some reason the update of the firmware via WiFi doesn't work either, so I would be glad if anyone just knows a way to upgrade to a newer stock-firmware)
My phone:
model: GT-I9100
Android: 2.3.3
Baseband: I9100NEKD5
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE1-CL181974
Buildnr.: GINGERBREAD.XWKE1
thank you all in advance
Can you download and install the latest version of Odin and check if it recognises that your phone is connected?
Let me know
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
You can try ExynosAbuse ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297) for rooting; not sure if it works for gingerbread though.
Once you're rooted you should be able to flash cwm with MobileOdinPro (costs 5 bucks; https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro)

Try these:
Boot to recovery and factory reset (backup any pics etc if required)
Set debugging in usb access
Try other usb ports on the pc.
I wanted the same thing untill it took me 2 weeks to decide I wanted to flash in odin. Swapping to a different port gave me access.
Good luck.

This is what I tried too and for me it didn't work. I got the same problem as TO. I'm going to try some more stuff and if it would work i'll let you know and will follow this.
ps. I even have switched the board inside with the micro usb connector. Didn't work. I am on 4.0.4.
I already tried if Odin recognizes my phone -> no success...
I also tried ExynosAbuse before, it tells me when I start the app made by chainfire, that my device is unable to be rooted via this method.
And I've already tried to connect through every single port on every single computer that's available to me, still no success...
The only chance a can see right now might be to find a signed kernel that gives me root-access via the "install update from SD card" function, I've already found a few, but none of them was suitable for my device...
The problem is that this firmware apparently is that "old", that most of the results when searching for this topic are JB or ICS-related.

You really gotta get your device rooted and flashed (mobile odin pro might is a good choice)
Don't you have an External SD card? if not, I'm sure you know someone who does.
Once you get it, you can get your device rooted & flash whatever you want via recovery.
And remember, you can always say to your dad "hey old man, how about this: I give you my phone, and you give me yours".

Yes, I do have an external SD card, but as far as I know, to flash your phone via MobileOdin it needs root access, and I still haven't figured out how to grant my applications root access on this device without any PC connection... I haven't found any useable kernel/update yet that helps me with my problem and can be installed without the phone being rooted already... If you know one, I would be glad if you could tell me
I already tried to negotiate with my dad but he doesnt seem very cooperative. He didn't like the fact that my phone has an older firmware than his and that I haven't found a way to update it... (Somehow the firmware-update via WiFi doesn't work too, it tells me everytime that the phone failed to connect to the server)

lol, okay, stop and read for a min.
You can root your device with that SD card.
Read this guy's method.
After you root it, you're up for some flashing.
But take it one step at the time.
If we get you to flash a nice looking ROM, your dad's gonna say something like this "hey, that's a nice looking OS you got there, how about I give you mine + 100 bucks"
About the OTA (over the air) update, I recall reading something about it. I'ma see if I can find a thread about that.
Also, you might like to try removing kies from your system (every last trace of it) and reinstalling the latest version. Then try connecting the phone again.

Quantity rather than quality lol.
Yes, this method doesn't work on GB, I've tried this before with a huge load of different CWM-bootloaders from a lot of different sources and it always throws an "signature verification failed" or "failed to verify whole-file signature" error or both...
Isn't there any similar way to do this on GB? I've been an iPhone user for a few years now and didn't check the android hacking/modding community very often and because of this I'm not aware of any rooting methods that may have been available back then...
All you need to do is use the exynos exploit to gain root. You can do this via a simple apk.
Once you have root install Mobile Odin and flash Siyah kernel (.tar) to get custom kernel, cwm recovery etc.
Then you're off! Just reboot into recovery and wipe/flash away :good:

Unfortunately the ExynosAbuse-method isn't an option for me neither...
EDIT:
found this in the changelog of ExynosAbuse (added in v1.20):
- Gingerbread-related fixes - note that not all Gingerbread firmwares of affected devices are vulnerable (for example, I know several SGS2 GB firmwares are not exploitable)
I think that unfortunately I have one of those firmwares...
What about changing the usb board.
If nothing else works this will be my last option in the end i guess, but I'd rather prefer a software-based solution because I assume it might be a bit cheaper
Looks like your only option to me.
try this
open the phone dialer
enter *#7284#
then make sure your phone is set to usb mode
you can try switching it to modem or the other option then reboot phone
then enter code again and pick usb option
you might need to reboot again
I had a problem in the past where USB would not connect and when I did the above it worked.

You, Sir, are my personal hero from now on I couldn't really try by now if this solved the problem with the USB-connection, but somehow it solved the problem with the firmware-update per WiFi, and now I was able to update to the newest ICS-firmware available to my device. And hopefully I will be able to root it now with one of the signed kernels available for ICS-firmware

root or recovery first?

I completely apologise for this , but i am completely lost with far to much information its very difficult to get the job done
i wish to get my old phone to run Google assistant
The phone is Samsung Galaxy Fame s-6810P
yes you might ask why i bother with such a poor phone, well firstly i want to learn on an old phone and secondly i might use it to do tasks such as a security camera or a fitness tracker.
i successfully installed a rom ages ago on a different phone but i cant remember how. because the phone is old many links to files are broken.
i tried here for links to recovery but the link is broken rootsandroid.blogspot.co.uk
so here is the back to basics questions
i have fivers installed and phone is connecting and can be accessed in explorer.
im pretty sure i need to root before
Custom recovery
I can not get either to work
i have tried rooting with Motochopper as this video and failed then tried a few others that look like scams like kingo said no, SRS one click was detected as a trojan, one click root is a paid for service, dr.fone said success but i cant see SU and root checker by joeykrim says no.
what is TWRP or CWM recovery i have tried installing Custom a recovery file with Odin using this video all looks like a success but when i reboot i still have factory recovery
i think once i get that bit sorted i can install my chosen rom unless im wrong
