Huh? I Don't really want to root (Deletes everything ??) and load a custom rom, i like it how it is with 2.1 (update 1)
I would just like to delete some of the useless trial games and applications that came preloaded, If i do decide to root it, Can i back up some applications first as there are a few usefull ones i regularly use.

I haven't been able to send a MMS yet on this phone, but i can access the internet fine.
When you root, it doesnt necessarily mean that you wipe all and replace with a custom rom. it just gives you the power to access the inner device(and i mean software) of your phone in which a default x10 cant.
Try superoneclick in rooting. then install titanium backup. there you can delete those apps like rollercoaster and gold rush. then if you want, you can unroot it. for your pleasure
if somehow i have helped you. dont forget to press "thanks"
wrong root just lets you get rid of stuff you dont want get your facts right

Ok, to translate this quick:
1. Without root, you can't delete those apps. You may also need root explorere after you root.
2. Root doesn't delete everything.
3. You can move apps to sd if you root (and i guess you want that )
4. Tips: Enjoy!

Yeah something like that, Root the phone so i have access to delete the pre-installed apps i dont want or need.
I seen a program called 'Uninstaller' I could use after i root the phone.
After ive used superoneclick can i delete the icon/app from my phone and remain with root access?
You know when you double tap the home button you get the voice search powered by vlingo.. is there anyway to completely remove it and disable the keymap for it?
Because i cannot use the quickdesk app at all. You can either press home once to enable the app (works) or double tap it (Blasted voice search always comes up first so i can not use it). i prefer opening the app by double click as i want the single click for home..
i have a rooted phone and used root uninstaller to remove the app but with the app removed doubling clicking brought up nothing, not even quickdesk or vlingo so im thinking it is mapped in.. :/
anyone?
You can freeze it with Titanium Backup.
yeah i have tried freezing it but then when i double click nothing comes up... its sort of like the phone has permanently mapped the double tap to only open vlingo and nothing else
look in the apps section for homemyhome it will allow to set up what ever application you want to open with a double click.

It's in one of the forums here. It works very well. Just do search on "homemyhome"
In Jkay's "Deluxe Settings" app (search xda) there is an option where you can unckeck "home button double click". After that Iwas able to use quickdesk as I love it. Now, read the jkay thread since I don't know exactly what you have to do to get it to work since for me the app came preloaded with a custom ROM I flashed.
EDIT: Ok, I did you a favour: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154278
THere you'll find all the guide you need to install it. OF course you'll have to have root and CWM installed. This is because you need a theme with jkay support for the app to work.
EDIT2: I found the thread for the app that Cosmic Blue recommended. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299923
It's way simpler than my method for just the home buton thing.
Thanks a lot for finding the thread!! but when I install homemyhome it just says application not installed with a tick next to it.
Also it said get rid of voicetogo.apk but I dont even have that yet my vlingo voice works :/
I am rooted btw stock rom

I'm also running a rooted Stock rom as well.
Disclaimer: I have just enabled root today and and it's been a fun ride. While I'm new, the info below is verified by me to get a result on the SGS2 International version I own.
I has success with removing VoiceToGo.apk and substituting it with Google Voice Dialler. Perhaps you could look through the steps below and see if you might have missed something?
Troubleshooting:
Have you restarted your phone? (probably an unnecessary question, but I generally do it to be safe)
Have you double-checked /system/app/ to verify VoiceToGo.apk is still present in that directory? If you can still run Vlingo, then this app is probably still in that directory.
Workflow:
I also followed the instructions in the post tomascunill linked (had to read the instructions a couple of times to ensure I understood them).
I used CWM to do a full device backup before doing this just in case I needed /system/app/VoiceToGo.apk again.
I fully deleted VoiceToGo.apk with the free version of Titanium Backup app from the Play Store.
I connected the phone while in normal mode (not download mode) to my Linux laptop and used adb from the Android SDK to take it from there.
adb commands I used were:
To verify adb saw my device (which it didn't initially because I had the phone in download mode), I ran:
Code:
[downloads]$ adb devices
List of devices attached
304D19E8516BED9E device
To make adb remount my file root file system, I ran:
Code:
[downloads]$ adb remount
To push the VoiceDialer.apk to the correct location I executed:
Code:
[downloads]$ adb push VoiceDialer.apk /system/app/VoiceToGo.apk
I then restarted the phone and all was good.
My son was double-tapping that button and starting Vlingo ALL THE TIME. But now I can control that. The great thing is that Google Voice Dialler doesn't launch while on the lock screen (my son isn't quite that smart to unlock the phone)
Hope this helps you work out what's happening.
Anyone know where I can hold of these? I couldn't find them on the phone...

You can find the corresponding ogg files on your phone in /system/media/audio/notifications/
But you have to browse into the root of your phone's filesystem, so use a Root Explorer or similar (I am using ES Datei-Explorer on a rooted phone).
Thanks for the quick reply, but...it isn't possible without root access? I have been explicitly forbidden to root my phone by my boss :S

Depends on what you want to do.
If you want to modify, change or delete them, then you need root.
If you only want to read or play them, then you do not need root.
Goto Settings menu => Sounds => Notifications.
I guess that this is not what you want.
Without root, it is not so easy to access these system files.
P.S.: Does your boss allow a temporarily rooting?
You can root your phone, access the notification files, and un-root your phone again.
Here is a good description on how to root your phone => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Have a look at the first post where it is written "Quick Root Guide".
Unrooting will be done with flashing back the stock kernel.
I'll try the quick root guide. Tbh, my mom wanted my sms notification sound (yeah, I'm 37. Yeah, I still try to please my mom. Yeah, get over it hehe )
Worked like a charm. Thanks
Hey,
first of all my goal:
I'm on stock 4.2.1 with my Galaxy Nexus. I want to be able to toggle airplanemode either via notification center or nfc, or any other app like Tasker.
My question is:
Currently my phone is rooted and I installed different Apps like NFC Tasker, Tasker etc. I made some of this app to a system App --> moving to /system/app/ an granted them root access.
What happens to this Apps if I unroot / unlock my phone again.
Do they keep their root access, because they are at the Systemapp folder?
If not what options do I have? I don't want to keep my Phone rooted. I found a APP namped helper it is used by "Security Settings" to e.g. toogle airplane. Is that an option?
Thanks a lot
I have tried to root then unroot my gingerbread device after moving some apps to system, everything seemed fine.
Good luck !

I can't seem to find an app to disable volume buttons ?
I can manually do it and reboot by editing gpio.kl but I need a quick way,
A way to set it to change and auto reboot with a click or an app that does it without any reboots would be what I need
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks
