I'm reading the below post about rooting for the first time, currently on the bone stock gingerbread OTA.
HOW TO go to stock, OR from stock, and then flash any ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1053567
Will data be wiped when rooting and flashing CWM? I want to root, install CWM, then immediately make a nandroid so I can always go back to my current setup. Is this possible?
Thanks in advance!

the only way data ever gets wiped is if you odin a stock package or wipe data in cwm...so no you wont lose your data.

Recently, I reflashed 1.26, rooted via gladroot, then updated via OTA to 1.57 then 1.83, retaining root both times. I immediately backed up my system via CWM. At that point, I was running stock, rooted 1.83, and did not download anything and did not change any settings.
My question is, if I want to uninstall a theme or gingerblur, or if I screw something up, would it be cleaner to re-flash 1.26 and re-do all the steps above, or will simply restoring from CWM put me in the exact same spot?
Thanks.
Nobody? I can't post in the development forum, otherwise I would have asked in Tenfar's thread.

I believe you can restore with CWM if you want to go back to the same point, but not if you want to restore apps and data to a later updated firmware revision.
I haven't tried this myself yet, but will the next time I clean off my phone for whatever reason............new "ROM" maybe. I up till now have been flashing back to 4.1.26 and then updating to keep everything clean.
My 3vo is kinda broken I think, the battery life is super bad and it just has a lot of software related problems. Now I did S-off and root, and then didn't flash a rom, but I did flash bootscoot, which I think started it all. Now what I want is to restore my phone, and delete things like bootscoot. Can I do that with a hard reset? Remember, I want to keep S-off and root, but the rest can go. What do?
I have GSM 3vo btw, so there is no good stable rom I can flash, so I really want to keep the stock rom I have on there now, but hard reset AND restore flashes stuff. No way to do this?
Dangit, title is stupid. Don't want to restore flashed things, but delete them (restore to stock), Like bootscoot moved some system files, will they be moved back?
What the hell is a bootscoot?
To restore your phone completely back to how it was and keep S-OFF+root+busybox etc., first run the superwipe.
Here is team Xron's superwipe: http://www.androidfilehost.com/xron/Betas
Download the one titled "XRONFORMATALL"
Next, download a stable ROM. I couldn't find the stock 2.08 rooted ROM but you may be able to find it if you keep looking.
Now, place both zips on your SD card. Boot into recovery. First, wipe data. Then, flash the superwipe. After that, flash the ROM you downloaded and boot up.
You should now have nothing on your phone except the ROM you installed.
--------------------------------------------------------------
If you want to return to complete stock 1.13 with S-ON and no root, you can flash the PG86IMG located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194053
Flash the superwipe and wipe through recovery if you want just to be safe.

Bootscoot is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17748500
Ah damn this is the only way? That is not what I want...
I have the stock rom, but with root options. So what if I do a hard reset? It won't restore the flashed things? And what if I do a hard reset via cwm recovery? That won't fix things either. I just want to keep the stock rom, but with superuser. BTW I have GSM so not any good roms yet.

My Suggestion would be to just make a Nandroid backup of your phones Stock Rom, Then after you have the backup made try Wiping Data (Factory Reset) Also there PM86IMG Images that can be Ran from the SDCard which will Always give you back the OTA Updates!
Hi guys, thanks in advance for your help!
Just a (hopefully) quick question:
Currently I am running Alien ROM/Theme and obviously unlocked, rooted, and have flashed CWM Recovery. If I were to flash the latest 198_6 SBF, what would happen?
I was under the impression that I would need to reinstall stock recovery prior to flashing the SBF, or am I just completely wrong here? I don't really understand what would be affected except that I would probably be relocked and unrooted..?
Thanks again guys!
K
You would lose cwm, unlock, and root, taking you back to the latest stock.. However your data partition (apps, contacts, etc) will remain untouched.

Yeah, I figured I would that would happen. Just kind of a pain in the ass to do that all over again...LOL! Thanks Acvice!
Hellow guys!
I haven't flashed any ROM yet. I was just learning the procedures & want to know from you guys whether I'm wrong or right.
My phone is from AT&T. So I'll go with the following procedure.
1) It comes with Motorola's Official gingebread
2) I'll unlock the bootloader via fastboot
3) I'll root it with this easy method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255548
4) I'll install ROM Racer's latest recovery.
5) I'll install faux's kernel on the stock rom & make a backup of it.
6) I'll flash Darkside ROM.
7) Now if I restore the backup of my original ROM will it work perfectly?
I was just wondering that. (I'm afraid about the sbf things )

I would suggest making a backup before you install faux's kernel, or else it wouldn't be your "original" ROM.
As far as .sbf's go, you shouldn't need to use them (or RSDLite) again after unlocking your bootloader. There are flashable CWM files called fruitcakes that can be used to get back to stock Gingerbread. You only run the risk of hard bricking if you try to install a pre-GB .sbf after unlocking your BL on GB.
And yes, you should be able to restore a backup without any issues.

So suppose I do that. Then I'll install the Darkside ROM. How'll I revert back to the stock ROM? Just by restoring the backup I made or there's something extra task?

Sorry, I was adding my edit as you responded. Yes, you just flash your backup or use the fruitcakes I linked to. Either option will get you back to the stock ROM.
Thanks again man!
Hi guys,
This is my first post(go easy on me) also english is my second language.
Anyway, i've had my ATT-i777 GS2 since launch & been keeping tabs on its development & such. I stayed on stock experience due to not having any issues at all. I think i waited long enough that i should try the ICS experience, ive' red quite a bit about it & learned of its huge improvement for Android.
So my question is what's the easiest way to get stock rooted ICS?
I have these options in mind:
1. update thru Kies & then use creepyncrawly guide UCLE5 Stock ICS with Root
- to me its risky because this have the brick bug
2. root GB with a custom kernel with CWM so then i be able to flash a CWM stock ICS rooted rom
- this one sounds more tedious to me but with this i can avoid KIES update(i think)
Keep in mind my phone is still bone stock GB 2.3.4 & this is my first attempt in flashing.
any more suggestions pls.
Whatever path you choose will be a little tedious. If you plan to flash a custom rom rather than stock ICS, then I would suggest that you root Gingerbread and install a custom Gingerbread kernel containing ClockworkMod Recovery, and then flash ICS from there. I suggest my guide for installing firmware without incrementing the flash counter. If it were my phone running 2.3.4, I would use zergrush toolkit to root, and mobile odin to install the kernel.

if i use the zergrush toolkit route is there any wipe/reset involve or necessary prior to doing so?

No. Just root it and then flash a Gingerbread kernel. You'll still be on the same base, 2.3.4.
Then, when you are ready to flash a custom rom, which will obviously be another base, especially if it is an ICS rom, then you should do a wipe data/factory reset before you flash the rom.
