Edit 10/11/12
I received my jig from mobiletechvideos.com today. It worked as advertised. It reset the triangle, as well reset the custom binary download count to No, and reset current binary to "Samsung Official" even though I am running entropy512's 10092011 kernel.
Here is a link to a video, mine works just like the video

Has anyone tested a usb jig with the att gs2 yet?
It should work the same as with the i9100 version, but I was just wondering if anyone who has the phone that might have a jig and tested it yet.
I just tested my jig (I am rooted and had the triangle on my att version) and my count now says NO and the yellow triangle is gone.
Thanks, I wanted to just make sure before I bought our made one.

If I recall correctly, there are a few different possible resistor values for jigs? Which one is yours?
Now that I have a device with the bootloader counter, I need to get some resistors and finally open that package of MicroUSB breakouts from Sparkfun.
I'm considering buying the SGS II in the next week, what exactly does the Jig do? I didn't see much in terms of why you would need this for rooting so I figured I would inquire.
It will put your phone into download mode as long a your bootloaders are not corrupted (which can be done by other methods also), but more importantly it resets the binary flash counter to zero and removes the yellow triangle from the boot splash screen if you have a custom modified kernel or ROM flashed to your sgs2 phone.
All in all not a necessary device, but very useful to those who flash and modify their phone

So if I am not mistaken it's just a way to prevent AT&T Support from visually seeing you have at somepoint flashed a different kernel and theoretically voided the warranty.

Oh that wouldn't bother me in the least considering how rarely I reboot my device. Thanks, I appreciate the help. I anticipate that the community will have roms churned out left and right for this device based off the ease of hacking and the number of ROMs that were available for the Captivate.

my captivate jig worked on the S II
I think we will see a few people with old jigs that do work and old jigs that don't and it will be because slightly off the mark resistance. I bet those whose old jig that does not work will just need to tweak their jig by an ohm or two.
By the way I ordered a jig from mobiletechvideos.com yesterday and I will report back on if it works when I get it here.

Do you recall how many ohms your jig is and what wattage? I built mine with 301 ohms @1/4 Watts. Would unbrick Captivate to DL mode, but not soft-bricked Infuse. It would put working Infuse into DL mode though?????

i have been looking around but i dont see anything to help. my problem is that i have a samsung att i777 or the galaxy s2, but i have recently flashed new roms and custom kernels an like certain things from all. unfortunatly i dont like any certain one . but the problem is that i tripped my counter and i dont know how to reset it. i have a jig and have tried multipul times, but still nothing. i have odined back to stock everything. just a minute ago i flashed the newest modem but still same prob. while in download mode it says factory mode on top. instead of odin mode. someone with some kind of expierence please can you give me a pointer?
Do you have the right jig

I don't understand your problem... Are you trying to return your phone? It only matters if you are bringing it back to att. what it sounds like to me is li dint like any roms i want to go back to stock." To which id say you have it at stock let the counter stay.
But to answer your question... The sgs2 had tighter tolerances on the resistor used, meaning some old ones won't work. Idr what thread it was so use the search feature of the forum to find which jigs people have had good luck with, the info it's out there.

@pogmothoin17,
If your jig boots your phone into download mode, but the flash counter does not get reset, then somewhere along the line, you flash one of the leaked roms, 2.3.5 or 2.3.6, or you installed an I9100 rom that also installed a secondary bootloader. Since you say the flash counter reads Factory mode instead of Odin mode, I'm guessing you flashed one of the I777 leaks. If you install one of the leaks with the one-click Odin downloader, it will install a new secondary bootloader, that is programmed to not reset the flash counter. I don't know what the flash counter says in that case, but it could be factory mode. It would make sense. Anyway, if that is the case, you need to flash back to the original I777 UCKH7 secondary bootloader. Go here to get the file and instructions.
Well thank y'all for the feedback. No I wasntgonna return the phone I actually love it. Coming from a vibrant especially. I like some things for all the custom Roms and kernels. Just not enough to stay with one for the.moment. I am not in depth enough yet to try and make my own or.customize a.rom .....even though that is what o wanna start doing. The way I look at.it is I took it back to stock to see how this ota. 2.3.6 update was. When I go back to stock I like everything to be normal....as it was new. Its more just a pet peeve. Creepyandcrawlwy I was actually hoping you'd respond as I hear great things about you. I use xda quite a bit but just became a memebr thinking of would help if I had any questions as I advanced in my phone Modding abilities . Thanks again for all the help and ill try all this again.

It doesn't make sense then. If you flashed back to stock using Entropy's unbrick/return to stock package and a wipe, it should be totally stock, and wifi should work. Could it be a problem with the router?
I dunno I don't get it niether I got my wifi working but still have a count. And phone is not ota updating either. It keeps saying up to date bit I'm still running 2.3.4. My brother got his update.

My phone broke so the power button no longer works. I called AT&T and they are going to send my a new (or refurbished) phone. My question is what would be the easiest way to reset my flash counter so they don't know i voided my warranty. the way i see it i have two options:
1. Buy a jig really fast and use that
2. Flash an ICS rom and install Triangle Away ( an app by chainfire).
I'd prefer number 2 but as my power button is broken, I would not be able to manually boot into download mode when i'm done to restore the stock rom. Would flashing an older version of miui or any other rom with an option in the interface to boot to download mode work in my case?
Any input is appreciated. I would really not like to pay $400 is they found i voided my warranty.
Sounds like jig is the.only real option. Maybe find someone locally who has one?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
You have 10 days to return it, I think.
You can also buy the parts at a local Radio Shack or other electronics parts store. You need 401,000 ohms across pins 2 and 5 (I think, typing from memory here. Verify before acting.) It's not as easy as a jig, but can be done in a few hours or less.
Best bet is to make it yourself if you can handle basic soldering..Otherwise find an ebay seller within a few hundred miles that has a good rep for fast shipping. Tough to navigate w/o power, good luck!

Is there any way that maybe I've missed to either a) root the TMo GS3 without triggering the counter (I saw methods for AT&T and others) or b) reset the counter after triggering it? I've searched and searched without finding anything. Is there anything out there or would it be fairly simple to create something? I'm willing to get my hands dirty to create this if somebody is able to help me through he process.
Are the methods AT&T users use reproducible for us?

Costco is the best! Great prices on phones too! There will be a way to reset it eventually. That is my GUESS.
Okay, I've found the process for creating the proper files so this can be done. It'll just be a specific Odin file, slightly tweaked from a stock Odin file.
I've never tried this before although it seems to be fairly standard with Galaxy devices. I don't believe ANYBODY has ever tried this on a T999 before.
I'm thinking I'll have something to test with this weekend. Anybody interested in helping me to test this? If you do, you do so knowing that this may
1) trigger your counter anyways, and
2) brick your phone into oblivion and make it blow up and kill your dog
If anybody's willing to take the plunge, I'll chime back in later to coordinate the testing. I need others to risk triggering their counter as I have 1 and only 1 device with the counter still at 0 and I want to personally see it successfully in action before I publicly release it. But if I miss something and trigger my counter, then I'll never be able to test it again until we find a way to reset the counter.
Thanks for taking the initiative. Hope you get successful results.

Anybody else interested in helping test? Remember, I'm probably going to brick your phone and make it turn into a Decepticon where it'll kill your goldfish. And more realistically, if I mess it up, it'll probably be a soft-brick that will require a stock Odin flash and/or it'll trigger your flash counter.
So I'm mostly finished creating the file for this but I'm stopping. mrRobinson beat me to it, and apparently did so last night!

Entropy512 has provided assurance that Triangle Away should be the tool of choice for reseting the flash counter on SGH-I777 devices. Please see his post later in this thread.
Following is the original post:
Triangle Away is a potentially good tool for resetting the flash counter.
However, there is a not insignificant risk in using it since it makes modifications within the actual bootloader. Further, while it does work on our phone, the SGH-I777 is not listed under supported devices in the developer Chainfire's original Triangle Away thread.
Chainfire has the following to say in the OP of that thread:
Chainfire said:
THIS IS A DANGEROUS OPERATION AND COULD POTENTIALLY BRICK YOUR DEVICE. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. A USB JIG IS PREFERRED IF YOU HAVE A WORKING ONE.
( and by brick I mean brick - only a board replacement or a JTAG unit will be able to save you, don't mess with boot(loader) stuff unless you really mean it! )

So, please think a little bit before blithely recommending Triangle Away. And please do not intimate that since Triangle Away is available, it should be the first choice. Actually, the first choice for resetting the flash counter and removing the warning boot screen on our phones is a USB jig.
Wow. Thanks for this man I seriously had no idea the risk was that great. I saw the warning before but just assumed it was like most that developers post saying that its not their fault if this bricks your phone or poisons your dog and all that. I'll definitely be changing what I recommend to users regarding this. Cheers!

According to this thread, the jig method of resetting the counter was disabled by AT&T on later GB bootloaders and ICS. Unless JB allows for it, the only way to remove the triangle on current roms is to either use Triangle Away or to never increment it in the first place, as per that thread.
As far as that warning goes, any software that interacts with the phone on that low of a level carries the same warning. Every rom, kernel, modem, flashable zip, kernel tweaker, and OC/UV has it. Nothing new here.
Yeah creepy i think is saying this cause some people have posted threads that they've used this app and bricked their devices. I've used it in the past just fine, but haven't in a long while .

I can't agree with this statement. Yes, any firmware that interacts with the phone on a low level, i.e. bootloaders, param.lfs, etc. should include a warning because there is a real risk of hard bricking the phone which can only be recovered with jtag or motherboard replacement. But there is verly little risk of a true hard brick when flashing a kernel, a system partition, or a modem. Since the beginning, there have been no firmware packages in this forum that include bootloaders and other more critical parts of the firmware.
Triangle away is a useful tool, even for our phone, but the point is that it is certainly not the first choice to clear the warning triangle, or reset the flash counter.

You are mis-quoting me. As far as I am aware, the only crippled bootloaders were included in the ICS leaks before AT&T released the official ICS. I'm definitely not aware of any I777 phones, new or refurbished, being received with crippled bootloaders.

I'm very sure I quoted you quite precisely. I made no mention of the bootloaders that came with the ICS leaks being the culprits. The thread I linked to does mention that, but it also mentions that functionality being removed on the last GB update that AT&T released. I can vouch for that the last official GB bootloaders removed that functionality. I have not had the chance to try it with the official ICS bootloader.
So, in order to reset the counter, you would have to revert to the old bootloaders, which is equally, if not more-so dangerous than using this app. Unless that functionality made it back into the official ICS bootloaders, then my point is moot.
I've used it on my i777 with i9100 bootloaders. Ran it twice actually. No problems so far . *shrug

Actually, creepy I recently received a replacement gs2 after my usb port crashed. Upon receiving it, I rooted it, causing the flash counter to go up. No flashing the stock 2.3.4 bootloaders in theory only gets risky if you're trying to flash it with like 10% battery left. Its not like the bunk kernels from ATT with the brick bug or trying to flash recovery with ROM Manager. Flashing the boot loaders (or any component) with Odin/Mobile Odin carries the same 'simple' risk flashing any firmware does. Follow the directions and you 'technically' shouldn't need to worry.

Doesn't matter. Creepy's argument was that using triangleaway is risky because it involves alterations involving the bootloaders. So using his logic, flashing those bootloaders is likewise risky, and if a jig doesn't work any longer, triangleaway is just as viable an alternative as flashing old bootloaders is.

@benjamingdelacruz,
Thanks for the info about your phone coming with ICS and a crippled bootloader. That is the first confirmation I have seen of that for the I777. It's not surprising, I guess. The SGS III and other new models also can not be reset with the jig.
As far as the difference between flashing the original secondary bootloader vs using Triangle Away, I guess I mostly agree with you that both are dangerous. The danger with flashing a bootloader is that the power goes off or the cable is unplugged or something else interrupts the flash during the few seconds it takes to actually transfer the bootloader code. With Triangle Away, the program is actually opening and writing to a data register that is controlled by and stored within the secondary bootloader code. I have no idea what could go wrong with that. Maybe more chance for problems than the other. I don't know.
Regardless of all this, I still feel that we should not blithely recommend Triangle Away as the first choice for this phone. And it is especially important that people understand that using Triangle Away is not a normal safe operation.
For anyone not on the new ICS boot loaders, a jig seems the safer solution. Plus, I like grapes. I've never personally had any reason to flash different boot loaders, but glad we got confirmation this is an issue with the new ics ones.
