Crackling sounds from call speakers - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got a situation here , after a year or so my X10's earspeakers are crackling, making it almost impossible to hear what people are saying.
Just wondering whether anyone else here has experienced this issue, or already fixed it. If not then maybe I'll send it in for repairs.
Thanks all.

I haven't a X10 anymore but this sounds very familiar. I had it also at the end. We have a company here in Holland that will buy your old phone. But they have a few rules for get the most off the money ( I got for example still 80euros for a 2 years old phone, the maximal price that the want to give). So when my phone was back to stock a friend call me. He ask if I had already a new phone because the crackling sound was gone. I don't really know If this story helps you, because I haven't take the time to test it ( I want back then the Arc S so quick as possible). I had a feeling the cause was the ROM. The latest three month I have the same ROM. And the latest two month I had that issue. So you can try to make a backup and flash a stock ROM and try If its gone.
Good luck

Im using wolf's ROM, will try another if I have to... thanks!

just grabbed my next door neighbour and did 2 way test, i walked around the block on his 7 year phone and he sounded muffled on mine - went back to my phone and he was having trouble making me out but sound clear to me - bollocks!
guess i better flash stock back again.

This is exactly what happens to me!!!
I suddenly start sounding muffled...
when my wife goes out of town...
and I go on a drinking rampage.
But then she comes back, and everything is back to normal.
Sorry OP, for makign a joke here. Yeah like others said, try factory reset and then restore factory firmware.
Some ppl claim that this happens when u r using a case cover blocking the mic for noise reduction. Try using it without and see if this solves the problem!!
Hope this helps!!

With the phone itself. It seems to be a certain location your mouth is to the mic just causes muffled sound. And the noise cancellation seems to be part of the issue, doesn't work correctly. So turning it off sometimes helps.
well i called O2, and they are swapping me a brand new one tomorrow, as i have had one month!, ordered on 25th May and called yesterday being 25th June.
they are bring me one to my house - that is service!
i did try flashing stock rom, but no difference, tested my mates and his sounds fine, pretty sure there is an issue. oh well a new one will do!

[Q] Can someone explain the steps to getting a free replacement?

I've just become aware of the new replacement program for problem Fascinates. I've been reading the forums but it wasn't completely clear EXACTLY what i need to do in order to be offered a replacement. I bought my Fascinate on eBay like 3 months ago (pre-rooted with a Blackhole ROM i believe) and while i do like it, it does have it's share of issues. i get the phantom button press a lot, GPS is VERY slow to lock at times, i occasionally get random voicemails from calls i didn't know i missed, my screen timeout setting is constantly changing back to 15 secs when i set it to 2 minutes, and MMS rarely works.
so yea, from what i've read so far, it seems like i'm prime for a replacement. but i need to know first off, do i need to flash a stock rom or will it not matter? will i need to take it in and prove it's not working because it only has these issues sometimes and i may not be able to replicate on the spot? also what exactly do i need to say (and who do i call) in order to prompt them to offer me a new device? thanks in advance for the help and i apologize if this is explained somewhere already. i've looked and it just seems to mostly be people talking about their new phones and not how they actually got them.
1. Go to Walmart.
2. Buy knee pads and lip gloss.
3. Go to Verizon.
4. Put on knee pads and a good amount of lip gloss.
5. By now you should know where this is going.

Just act stupid and say your phone doesnt work right and yes u should change everythin to stock couz root voids your warranty. But sometimes they still replace even if i did it. But change back to be safe

You may have a problem because you didn't get the phone directly from vzw & they can find that out. Also, they're getting hammered right now with people trying everything to get this deal whether they need it or not. Seems like they're becoming a little more stringent with their criteria. But I think the real problem for you is where you got the phone.

Ugh! I hope you get nothing. vzw knows YOU didn't buy the phone from them.
good day.
I wish I could tell you good news, but I've been down this road before. My hub bought a phone off ebay and found out something was wrong with it that same day it came in the mail. He went to Verizon and asked them if they could do anything and they said since he bought it from ebay they can't do anything. They are going to look into your account and know that you didn't get it from them, so I don't think you have any hopes at all getting it replaced.
You could however flash it back to stock and try...if you don't succeed...keep it stock and put it back on ebay. The fassy's are still selling for quite a bit and use that to purchase new phone.
well thanks for all the help. some people seem really offended but the only reason i even asked is because people on other forums said they traded in their eBay Fascinates and got the deal. i don't know if the warranty is transferable or not, but it's still been out less than a year and should be covered. also, there is no way they can tell i bought it on eBay either. the most they should be able to see is when i activated it and maybe track the ESN back to the original owner, still doesn't say i bought it on eBay. i didn't buy it directly from Verizon but the guy i bought it from did. people were even having success with phones bought from Best Buy.
You don't understand.... It's people like you taking advantage that makes it harder than it needs to be for people actually having problems and honestly want to return the phone...
It's people like you also who everyone thinks badly of in there heads and in the IRC xD

Do you think it only has to be from an authorized retailer? I bought mine from Best Buy and they never even asked me where I got my phone. So maybe they can somehow tell if it was either bought from them OR an authorized dealer OR maybe the reps that I worked with didn't care.
They probably won't be doing swaps anymore because ED05 is official and ready.

For sure the swap ended yesterday due to the new ED05 update. Right now, they're only offering replacement Fassys. I was however, able to talk them to giving me an early upgrade for the trouble since I REALLY hate this phone. Better than nothing, and they were real cool.

i understand perfectly. and don't you think your being a little extreme? it's not like my phone doesn't have issues. it WAS bought from Verizon and it has a warranty. so I didn't personally buy it from Verizon but what the hell difference does it make? if it's messing up and under warranty, they should fix it or give me a replacement. did you even read my original post? i said what was wrong with the phone so it's not like i'm making stuff up, i just wanted to know what they were listening for in order to qualify for the upgrade replacement since i have more than one issue. don't make me out to be the bad guy, read on other forums where people are just saying they have issues to get the upgrade when their phones work fine. i even saw one story where a store manager encouraged someone to say they were missing calls to get a Charge for free when the guy said he was saving money to replace his Fascinate. so it really falls on the reps to do their jobs anyway since they are supposed to actually check for issues, so isn't it their fault if they don't? i ended up not even calling anyway, so get off your high horse guy.
and no, i don't think they can tell where i bought it. they can most likely tell where it was originally purchased and see when and where it was activated and deactivated but how can they possibly know more than that? stop spreading propaganda.

i'll probably just wait for a new ROM based on the latest update now if that actually fixes the issues. sure the allure of a new device is intriguing (especially if it's free), but i don't dislike the phone, i just want it to work like it's supposed to.

I love the holier than thou forum white knights. I swear you relative moralists leave no forum untouched with your auto-ego stroking.
Listen, everyone who owns a Fascinate and went through the OTA update process had the same issue with missed calls and texts. Furthermore, even custom ROMs (CM7 included) experienced this issue. Until now, there was no work around and not everyone is an XDA daily driver and knows that ED05 has been released. We all went through the exact same run around waiting for Froyo, I know I for one wasn't about to sit back and wait for this release to be pushed back 4-5 times. I took the free upgrade and I don't feel the least bit bad about it. I even posted the script that worked for me on the first try, because at the time ED05 had no firm release date and I feel like everyone pumping out $200 for a phone and $100+ a month deserves a product that won't cause them huge issues like the Fascinate caused for me. I lost thousands in sales because I missed calls and the Google Voice missed notification wouldn't show up for 15-20 minutes.
Bottom line is, don't try to crucify everyone that asks for help with this situation. Odds are they don't know about ED05 being released and they probably don't trust Samsung to get an update out on time because they never have. The only reason this one came so fast is because Verizon/Samsung were losing their asses on replacement costs.
TLDR: Don't be a ****.

Tell them you lost it somewhere where there is a high volume of people coming and going i.e the mall, hospital etc. if you have insurance on your phone you should be able to get a new one

If you think you can call Verizon and say your phone is defective and expect them to send you something different then it wont happen.
1. You bought the phone off eBay, thus you no longer have a one year manufacture warranty.
2. Without the manufacture warranty they cant send you a replacement phone.
3. Your best option is to see if you have an upgrade or go through your insurance and see what kind of phone they will send you. You never know sometimes they send you UPGRADED phones!
To the people WHO ACTUALLY GOT THERE PHONE THROUGH VERIZON. If you are within a year and your phone is "defective" then you can call them and make it clear that you have done a full factory reset and everything you try doesn't work. They will then send you a replacement, it might be the same phone or you might get lucky and get an upgraded phone.
I work for Verizon and I've had customers come in with a Droid and manufacture sent them a Droid Three.

Accessory not supported (headset)

Hi!
I know this topic has been written about countless times! I know this because I've read most of these threads (atleast the ones I could find), but my case seems to be different..
Last year, all of a sudden, I couldn't use my stock SE headphones. It seems that when I dropped the phone in the snow, something happened.
Now, I can use any kind of headset once, every 24 hours or so... If I take them out, and then put them in again, I get a pop-up telling me the accessory is not supported.
I tried changing the ROM, hoping it would work (using miniCM7pro atm), but I still got the same problem. I really don't like the fact of turning the phone in for a repair since I had to wait 3 months when I turned in my charger that stopped working all of a sudden..
So I'm wondering... Is there any other tweak/ solution or anything that I can do to fix this?
Thanks in advance,
/Nanashi Dri

That looks like hardware related problem. i hope someone here will come up with some answer for this....
I don't think there is an easy fix for what you're experiencing. but here's a few steps you could take.
Make sure there is nothing in the headphone jack that shouldn't be in there (bits of dirt/grit)
Make sure none of the contacts appear damaged. There should be 4 contact points inside the jack socket (exluding headset controls)
but i think the phone will ultimately need to be sent for repair

Hi! And thanks for your replies,
I'm not quite sure how I'm able to see the fourth one, since it's way too deep down, but I can see three of them.
Even if it will ultimately need to be sent for repair, I want to do my best to try and fix it before I send it in, since I really hate the thought of sending it in and then wait for three months. I'd rather buy an mp3 player, or and iPod or something in that case.

I'll see what I'll do. Worst case scenario, I'll re-install the original ROM and un-root, and then send it in. But I do want to try and fix it myself first.
Got one more year on my warranty, so time's not a real problem if I don't succeed..
Nanashidri,
at least you considered to unroot and go to stock before giving it.
i just gave it so those dummies at SE centers so they will go crazy seeing me running 2.3.7 on this phone, and they did go psycho! i indeed was laughing cause they started asking me silly questions, "how did you get this in this phone" and such questions.
i simply answered as i was roaming the internet and i did what you could not do....and they where dumb after that....funny funny (i came home and couldnt resist laughing at this matter).
my phone had camera function and my phone restarts after using it. so it was a hardware problem but they never understood it. in retaliation they just flashed the original 2.1. and for two weeks they still never got it right. i went inside the engineers room and recreated the problem. their eyes opened and tubelights switched on in their heads. at last they changed the main board and now it works!! see?
funny things happen....so dont worry. get yours changed when you still have warranty.
keep it up bro!
And this sorry ericsson is going better as "SONY" from next year! no more ericsson!

[Help please] Problem needing fix.

Hello everyone, i hope you can help me.
2 days ago i bought a LG Optimus One / P500h
I loved the phone, my first android.
But when i received my first call, the person talking to me couldn't hear me. I called her back and she didn't hear me. So i got this microphone problem. Sometimes it works and sometimes not, i don't know what's the problem, i'm thinking to try to get my money back (it's a used phone i bought from a guy of the work) but i wonder if i can fix it or make it better somehow.
I need this help until tomorrow because it's the day i'll see him, if i can fix it, i'll try.. but if i can't i'll have to give it back :/
I think its a network signal/hardware problem ..so none tricks would work!

Echo to the other phone

Hi I have Z2 D6503 the European version and recently I realised I have a problem - when I speak with somebody the other person hears his worths like echo. It happens whith every call and various phones. Only the other person hears the echo, I dont hear it.
The phone is with the latest software. Hard reset doesn't fix it.
What could be the problem and how can I fix it?

does the other person struggle to hear you too ? i am sending my Z2 back for so say repair , because i am so frustrated about the amount of calls i make where the other person either gets feedback or just cant hear me . for a flagship phone i think this is such a lack of quality control on sonys side . thing is there are a lot of people with this problem .. so if they just replace the microphone for another .. i cant see how this will fix anything .

Just because there are 10people on xda with microphone issues, doesnt mean all devices are like that. I dont see your logic, you seem to ignore all these other thousand users who dont have this problem
The other person hears my voice clear but because of the echo cant understand me. I tested a Skype and Viber calls and there is no echo, so I can conclude this is a software problem.

well there is a lot more than Ten i can assure you ! when the phone first came out there were a lot of threads about the call quality ! my reasoning is that if it is a software issue ... then just replacing the microphone wont make any difference at all . and if its that the microphone itself, is just crap , changing it like for like wont help either !

Or mobile network, or interference or environment, or anything really. A few VoIP tests don't really result in software issues.

well it was also interesting that i went into my local vodafone shop at the weekend as i needed a different size sim card for my daughters new phone . i was chatting to the lady that served us, and i mentioned to her the problems that i was having with the Z2 and the problems with the caller hearing sometimes .. and guess what ???? she had got the Z2 and she said she had had this issue at times too ! like i say its not every call .. but it is a large amount of them that this problem comes up. i certainly cant just wedge the phone under my chin and chat away like i could with my old galaxy S2 .. i have to be so careful how i hold this phone and keep the mic as close to my mouth as possible . and even then it wont always work. Not everybody that owns a Z2 will be members of XDA .. so its hard to asses how many handsets have this problem . but for me having to use this phone for work .. its not fit for purpose !

Not trying to bait you, I'm just saying, if you are on Vodafone, Vodafone rep on Vodafone, good chance that the complaints Vodafone hears are from Vodafone customers, your daughter is on Vodafone so you call people on the Vodafone network. There is more in common then the software.

I am assuming you are using normal Viber and Skype. If so, Viber and Skype are voice over IP not gsm!!!!
That's like saying 'tell me how a horse and a car are different, they both get me from a to b'
Gsm and IP work differently. You voice is transferred differently.

Please relax, this is obviously a SOFTWARE problem. Proof is, that this problem doesn't happen on calls on Skype and Viber. So hardware is just fine. I don't know if you know, but "phone" is an app aswell. So this is a problem with the phone's "Phone" application and most likely will be fixed in next update. There might be some other applications you've installed on your phone which might cause this problem aswell, also consider this.
Don't worry yourself.
