hi everyone, had my galaxy tab for a month or so now, freebie on a phone contract and other than it locking up a couple of times its been great. That all changed today when i installed a game called Oregon trails. After it had installed a (from the marketplace) it said it needed to download further files, and at about 60% done it locked up. It sat for a while doing nothing then reset itself and thats when everything went downhill. All of my apps didn't work, the market app was knackered and it was pretty much useless.
I've done a system restore and have spent a number of hours setting everything back up again, but this has angled me a lot. Is this what usually happens on the android operating system or was i just Unlucky?

This isn't something I would say usually happens. But all operating systems have issues occasionally. So yeah in my opinion I'd say you got unlucky.

Just make sure that you take backup's completely. Try updating your firmware to 3.2 if you haven't already. 3.1 had a lot of lockdown issues, so I assume you are on 3.1

Hey guys, this is my first post on XDA as I'm usually lurking or keeping up with updates. I've searched many forums for an answer to my problem but it does not seem that anyone has had the same issue.
Anyway, lately I've run into the problem of an unresponsive touchscreen. I can't even unlock my phone! Two nights ago I made three consecutive calls and about ten minutes later I couldn't unlock my phone.
In order to correct this problem, I first took off the screen protector to no avail. I was running CM7, flashed a sense ROM, flashed my backup of the stock ROM, went back to stock with S-ON, pulled the battery a bunch of times, completely wiped, removed the SD card, Soft & hard reset at a VZW store. Nothing.
Took it with me to school today, powered it on and before it completely loaded I was able to unlock it by chance, skipped the setup and it was working fine all day. I was hella overjoyed... until it did it again tonight. D: I so want it to be OS issues rather than hardware because I don't want to wait two days to get a 'reconditioned' TB from VZW.
HALP! Please? Thanks, guys for even looking!

P.S. I do apologize if I did not follow proper procedure to post or posted in the wrong subforum. S:
I'm frustrated and sitting around with an unrooted TB, ohnoes. (Although the screen looks sexy as hell without a screen protector.)

sounds like it could be a digitizer(hardware related) issue. on the plus side, you can pickup a new digitizer pretty cheap... downside though is you'd have to open up the phone to replace it. it's not that hard to do and there's videos online showing you how to.. you'd just have to be comfortable i suppose.
i'd just fix it rather then going the refurbished route considering that god know's what was wrong with it before it became "refurbished" not to mention you have no idea how much use the phone had been put through and how much life it has left.
My S2 has been turned into a gibbering wreck after I updated the firmware from GB 2.3.4 to ICS 4.0.3 using the standard Kies software. The firmware update looked successful but...
After the upgrade process the phone typically will only last 5 to 10 mins before randomly rebooting, the battery is fully exhausted from 100% after 2.5 hours (the battery also gets really hot) and generally the UI is highly unstable, i.e. prone to stuttering and freezing before then hanging or rebooting. In short, it's pretty much unusable.
My phone ran perfectly before the firmware 'upgrade', the UI was stable, the battery lasted approx 18+ hours with my useage and I virtually never suffered any random reboots. I had rooted it using the Zergrush exploit. I also have a 32GB card fitted and run Go Launcher EX (not Touchwiz), other than that the phone is fully stock. The phone is UK SIM free and unbranded (bought from P4U) using an UK Orange SIM.
Help what can I do? Is there a reset I can perform without loosing all my installed apps? Or am I going to have to do a full reset and re-install all my apps from scratch? Could it be something to do with the memory card, would a re-format of the micro-SD help?
I don't particularly want to do a full reset if I've then got to re-install all my apps (200+ Yeah, I'm an app junkie) but I get the feeling I won't have much choice as I can't leave the phone in its current state.
Thanks for reading. *sigh* I wish I'd just stuck with GB, if it ain't broke an' all that...
S.
Try a factory reset in the first instance.
If that doesn't help, you could either try a completely clean install of an ICS stock rom; check in this thread for unbranded UK & do a fresh install of your apps. Or you could do a fresh install of a GB stock rom; check that thread I linked you to in the first instance, if links are dead, search Samfirmware.com.
Re: your question about formatting your SD card, if you do either of the above, you may as well for good measure.
Edit to add - I don't have quite as many apps as you (~120) but whenever I install a completely new rom or a major version change (not nightlies), I always do a clean install. I find it's a few hours well spent.

Thanks for the reply Sorry to be a complete noob, but what would be the best method for a factory reset? Select the option from the relevant settings menu or key in *# code on the dialer? or doesn't it matter? I'm guessing the right code is either *2767*3855# or *2767*2878# would that be right?
Thanks again.
S.
Boot into recovery is how I've always done it. From memory you can do it from the settings menu as well on stock (it's been a while/hazy memory only used stock for a week 6 mths ago).
Yeah, it's probably one of those codes (I don't remember which as I've never used the code, only seen them in posts on here).

Ahh okay, Thanks again for your help. I think it might be a long night tonight.
*EDIT* Heh I just switched the phone on for the first time this evening and it's already rebooted within 5mins of coming on just being sat on the table. :|
S.
No probs. Good luck Post in this thread if you have any dramas/let us know how you go.
If your rooted, use titanium backup for your apps. Then reinstall user apps only after upgrade. Don't reinstall system apps.

Sorted...
All sorted! I can confirm that booting to recovery mode then performing a factory reset has cured my phone of all its symptoms, the gremlins have been banished, yay!
Big thanks to MistahBungle and all who helped... My UI is silky smooth again, my battery usage is back to normal if not a little better actually and greatest of all no more reboots every 5mins.
Although I didn't have to reinstall all my apps (approx 280 ish, sheesh ) since the phone automatically pulled them all back from Google Play (aka Market Place) it took an hour or so heh, I'm afraid all the apps have lost their settings so I am stuck with plugging all the settings in each time I start an app for the first time in ICS. Bit of a pain but could've been worse. Hmm, I've also got lots of bluetooth pairings to rebuild and wifi networks to re-aquire, oh well.
Next on the list...
I'll have to hunt down the easiest way to re-root too I have a need to re-install Orange's UMA client app, "Signalboost".
Thanks again to all.

Good to hear. Glad you got it sorted
Hey all my TFP peeps!
I am having infinite amounts of trouble getting netflix to work on my completely stock TFP since Netflix updated to 2.0. I have 4 devices and I have updated all but 1 (all android) to 2.0 and all of them are doing the same thing minus the kindle (not updated).
The SGS2 and TFP and LTE EVO with completely fresh installs will let me log in, properly see the panels of shows and recently watched, but once I select a show it will stick on the red loading screen infinitely, like overnight and nothing.
Kindle is working great.
Stock everything on every phone (I know, shame on me). All phones work on 3G/4G.
Comments seem that I am not alone: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...client&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd
So I come to the premier peeps for amazing solutions, what the HELL is wrong with my netflix apps on my phones/TFP.
BTW, I have not changed anything on my router, and tons of other devices are able to connect and watch (I make people try when they come over) ipads, iphones, etc... Come to think of it no other android devices lol.
Thanks all, Kevin

Well, I'm unlocked and not stock anymore, but I can let you know that I am able to run Netflix version 2.0.1 build 655 which I am assuming is the latest version fine on my Prime using Hairybean 1.3 which is a JB based rom. You can try clearing the data from your netflix app under settings apps, and then uninstall, then reinstall the app from the market. Maybe try turning off Automatic restore under settings, backup & reset so Google doesn't automatically restore whatever settings might be blocking you before you reinstall from market.
Hope you can get it figured out.
i ran a show for 15 mins, stock, locked JB and unrooted without difficulty.
I had problems right after the most recent upgrade. It was released about 3 weeks ago. I had just watched a Netflix the night before without problems. I upgraded then had the problems you're mentioning. Eventually, I got an error. The error occurred in the Netflix app and (to any reasonable person) it appeared to be a Netflix error.
I called Netflix support about this. They're usually very good. The tool that I talked to told me that it was an OS problem and that I'd need to contact Asus. I already know how absolutely HORRIBLE Asus support is, so that was DECIDEDLY NOT AN OPTION. I argued with this idiot back and forth for about 5-10 minutes. I told him that it worked fine the previous night with the previous version and then stopped working right after the upgrade. I asked him how in the heck he figured this was an OS problem.
This idiot could not help me and he let me know that there is no escalation point. The buck stopped there. To make matters more infuriating, there was no downloadable down-rev version of the player - he would not provide that -- UGH!
After cursing him, his family, his pets, his culture, his sexual proclivity (whatever it may happen to be), and his company, I removed and reinstalled the player a few times. It ended up working.

This is seriously killing me, i am one stop short of a complete factory reset. Could it really be just my tab?
Look at the comments for TFP under google play (Link in OP), I AM NOT ALONE, I SWEAR!!!

ACK! Sorry to ask.
I think I had my problems around 9/25 or 9/26. I just checked my version on my non-rooted, non compromised JB Transformer Prime. I'm running NetFlix v2.0.1 build 655. It looks like I somehow have something a little newer than you. Hmmmm.....

Yeah 655 didnt fix ****. SO PISSED.
Reset the whole tab and everything.
SO PISSED!!!!
Well guys I figured it out (kind of). I took the tab to a local McDonalds, and just as before it booted straight in and started playing. So at that point I knew it was something with my router. I have an Asus RT-N56u just in case it matters.
So I wrote down my settings (port forwarding for remote desktop, apps, etc to my HTPC) and did a factory reset. When it came back alive I just left it unprotected, and sure enough started streaming just like normal. Then I reset all of my settings one at a time (port forwarding, going to WPA2-Personal encryption, etc.) and each change it kept streaming just like normal. I now have my settings back to EXACTLY how they were before, but with a factory reset and changing the settings back to the same as before, it is working now. I have no idea why it broke, but on google play it seems there are others having the same troubles. I am now back in love with both my TFP and netflix service!

I've had the SGP 4.2 since August (North American version) and have become very fond of it. Although I've followed most of the dev areas, I have never rooted or installed any recovery, custom roms, etc...so it's on the stock Android 2.3.6 with 2.6.35.7 kernel and build number GINGERBREAD.UELD3. I have only installed things from the play store and amazon app store.
Sometime in the past week it has started shutting down randomly. Most times I notice when picking it up after hours of standby and it's fully off and need to boot up. A few times it has happened while in use - it just turns off. The battery level doesn't seem to matter, it can happen at 99%, 5%, and anywhere between.
Is there any way to tell if this is a hardware problem vs a software problem? Any other thoughts? I've not seen this problem in other threads, or at least not when running everything stock.
maybe a hardware issue.
see if samsung will fix/replace it

that was happening to me too. i just bought mine from best buy about 1.5 months ago. everything was fine, mine also wasnt ever rooted or flashed anything - just oem with playstore apps. then every now and then after about a month of having it, it would turn off and on by itself (only if it was idle though, without me touching it) its never happend to me while i was messin around with it. and then it started freezin up on me and gettin really laggy at times with certain programs but it was random and i couldnt reproduce it to try and pinpoint the program that was causing it. but then i read up on rooting it and the benefits of root and cwm and backingup everything and roms and since then, everythings perfect. better than new as a matter of fact. so in my opinion, you owe it to yourself to root your device so you can make changes to your lil buddy. i made sure i learned all about rooting and flashing and backups etc first though so i can do it safely. i mean, cmon i dont know about you but i paid alot of money for mine which is why i owed it to myself to 'safely' release the full potential of my device. :cyclops:
Totally agree that I want to start to release the full potential, thats' whay I've been poking aorund here for months (and tinering with my Acer tablet is getting old). My hesitation to start down that path is if there's a hardware issue I don't want to compound the inevitable probelms and end up with an out of warranty bricked device
Maybe I'll see what Samsung says. Like the previous poster - i can't directly replicate the issue so perhaps they won't replace, I'll see and update this post accordingly.

well one of the good things bout this forum is that it explains how to un-brick our devices if it happens. it was kind of intimidating at first for me too as this is the first android ive ever rooted and flashed diff roms. but as long as you make backups thru titanium and also a nand backup thru cwm and then use roms and kernals specifically made for your device that have been tried and tested and retried....then you really have nothing to worry about. and i also read somewhere that if you flash it yourself and somehow manage to brick your device, you can flash everything back to stock so your warranty wont be voided anymore - i could be wrong but im almost positive ive read that somewhere.
First off, I'd like to say my S2 is the Virgin Mobile version (model i9210) so I'm not sure if it's okay for me to post this in this forum or not. Feel free to move it where it should be, I won't be offended.
Edit: Originally had posted this in the Samsung Galaxy S2 forum, but it was nicely moved to this forum in hopes that it would be seen more~ So to clarify, my phone is the Virgin Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2, running Android 4.1.2, model number SPH-D710.
The ROM I have is BiftorROM-V8-JB-XWLSN-NoWipe.
Onward. This is my first Samsung phone AND my first Galaxy, and when I decided to root my phone, I had no idea how much different it would be from my past phones. How I didn't completely brick this phone, is nothing short of a miracle. I had trouble with some ROMs so someone eventually linked me to a Sprint stock ROM, saying it was compatible with my phone.
Since then I've been using that ROM, despite having a Virgin Mobile phone, with no problem. Recently I noticed an app I use (SD Maid) was listing my phone as unrooted. It was weird but I ignored it, because the app still worked. Even later, I noticed other apps that require root access were not working correctly, so I decided to download a root checker.
Status: Unrooted
Well, then. I'm not sure how this happened, or what's going on, but I figured again, it was no big deal because my ROM was running perfectly and I had no desire to change my ROM or anything else soon. Last night my phone started acting completely different. Lagging like crazy, and when I tried to unlock my phone, it would take a good 15 seconds just for the screen to turn on and my lock screen to start functioning normally. Then another 20 seconds or so for the screen to register my touch and actually unlock my phone. I tried disabling all lockers, but my screen would just turn black and I would still have to wait.
A friend suggested that I simply go through the process of rooting as though my phone really were unrooted and just hope that fixes it, but I'm not sure if that would be a good idea. If my phone wasn't operating so slowly this wouldn't be as big of a problem, but it is, and I'm pretty afraid that I'll mess my phone up somehow.
I once found a forum with the topic the same as mine but I haven't been able to find it since, so I'm hoping someone here could point me in the right direction. Do I go through the root process, maybe try just reflashing my current ROM? I've also thought about just doing a system restore on my phone and see if that helps. Thanks in advance.
