For those having swype problems. - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Being an advid lover of swype and not particularly caring for the built in trace options on the HTC Flyer. I figured I would try SlideIT.
I don't particularly like slideIT on the phone as swype just feels smoother and seems to manage space better.
However, I figured I would test it on the flyer and feel it is a great alternative to the stock HTC trace keyboard with a few extra features. I would not pay 5$ for it, but on sale for .99$ it is a great deal. I would highly suggest trying it out as swype seems to have no real concern about officially supporting the HTC flyer.
https://market.android.com/details?...t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5kYXN1ci5zbGlkZWl0Il0.

i bought it during the 10c sale...the only thing i like about it is the skins...it doesn't hold a candle to Swype on accuracy and word prediction - but yes, it's better than the stock Trace

Why not just use Swype then? Runs fine for me.

what version O/S are you running? the last time i tried to download it on Honeycomb it didn't let me
edit: i just tried again, i get "this is not an android phone" from the 'get' URL

I'm on the stock GB ROM. That's probably why it works for me. I just loaded a black and white version I had sitting on my PC. Probably gonna root pretty soon, just gotta buy a new sd card for the tab. Looking forward to trying some of the Roms.

Seeing as the title is "For those having swype problems" I think that would be pretty explanatory as to why we aren't using swype.
For like 6 months now Swype has not officially supported the flyer on honeycomb.
After a few days with SlideIT I must say it doesn't compare to swype.. but, it is nice to have some skin options.
I find Trace and SlideIT both have more issues than swype.. I can't really say over all what is the "better" keyboard, but I can spend a 1$ to find out if there is a possible better opportunity and would encourage others to at least try the alternative as well. (I still haven't decided whether or not I prefer SlideIT to trace, but I imagine everyone will have personal preference one way or the other)
The other reason I decided to go ahead and pay out is because if swype ever doesn't have support and trace isn't an option... I will have the SlideIT option if I ever have to get another tablet.

I didn't realize this was a HC issue, as it was not indicated in your OP. I have a modified black/white Swype apk that I loaded on GB. I have no experience with HC yet. My response was to the poster above me. Again, I didn't realize it was a HC issue and there was no indication of what the Swype issues are/were.
That being said, I totally understand going with an alternative. I missed the sale and have no need for this other keyboard at the moment. But perhaps I'll give their trial version a run. Thank you for providing another option.

So far, the lack of Swype, and the GPS lock issues, are the only issues I've encountered with Honeycomb. Everything else has been extremely smooth...

The trail doesn't work on the flyer for some reason.
I myself am hesitant to try the various modified swype APKs I've seen flying around..
Plus I would like some degree of official support from whatever App I use.. Not adverse to dev support or anything.. but, I've found swype is making continuous improvements in the right direction and would hate to have to be "frozen" on an older version of it.. Even if I like swype more.. at least the .99$ version of SlideIT may still change and get improvements..
Also while the sale is off now.. It will be back up in a week or two I'd almost bet money.. I wouldn't recommend it on phones as it takes up a lot more space than swype.. but, on tablets the space it waste is almost a non-issue.

Flex t9 works great and works with the scribe decently.

I downloaded the swype installer apk to my desktop computer, copied it over to my Flyer and ran the install. It installed perfectly and works great. It is version 3.26.92.38303.

Keyboards with swipe capabilities?

We all know what Swype is. However, I got to wondering if there were alternatives to the famous "Swype." Mostly because of the recent Nuance buyout it made me wonder Swype will always be around and, if it is around, at what price? That got me thinking there has to be alternatives, and so far I've found a few.
I've found Go Keyboard has swipe capability built in, however it seems ungodly inaccurate. I find I have to fight just to get it to type longer words, like sometimes, technologies, bringing, etc.
Likewise, I found SlideIt. It seems very fast, very responsive, and a very decent default dictionary. It seems to hang up for a nanosecond longer than some other keyboards when I fire them up, but once it's up it runs pretty quick.
That said, are there any others out there? Is there any potential for the default Android keyboard to adopt technology like this so all Androids have this capability out of the box?

+2 right here. You need to get v5 of touchpal from here on XDA (it's in this forum) rather than the v4.8 on the market. Usually as accurate as swype, many more features.
Edit: Linky here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1261750
Using TouchPal for few days, well it's damn great as a Free app, but there is some word selection problem exists which I already stated in that above thread. Anyway, I used to used T9 Trace on my Wave S8500 and was in love with it, whatever I swiped it used to give me the correct words, quite surprisingly! This built in Swype in Android is far more complicated than that. Some words you could never type on, like Or, What's, That's and a plenty more. I've tried changing the accuracy levels and words suggestion settings but nothing seemed to work out.
Frankly I am still searching for the KB of my liking, don't know if I'll successfully get one ! Something like T9 Trace!
BTW- This thread should be made a Sticky for Swype lovers like me and OP I guess.

HTC Sense Keyboard?

Is there a way I can get a copy of the stock HTC Keyboard on the G2? I miss it so much from my Inspire 4G. I believe it was Sense 2.1. Preferably without rooting?

This is the HTC skin from Smart Keyboard Pro (though it doesn't look as good as the original). It gives the directional keys also (you can use them with any skin). It has a lot of skins to begin with, and you have the option to get more (from the app forum).
There are several options for lookalikes - thumb keyboard comes very close, and I really appreciate the suggestion. But these don't quite do it. I've resorted to Swype till I figure this out. I'm noticing these and the included keyboards don't come with a keyboard hide button either which gets incredibly annoying especially while using the internet browser. Sort of frustrating how a supposedly superior device seems less thought through than the HTC.

Android 5 "jellybean" for HTC flyer

So. What now?
There is few - non-complete - ICS roms for the htc flyer, but nothing good enough for daily use.
We didn't even get android 4 before android 5 was out... :crying:
Drew Garen is apparently working on ICS. Maybe he should be asked to try to work on Jellybean instead?
What do you think? Will it be harder to get Jellybean? Will it ever be done?
I think you should just give it up. What makes you think we ll get 4.1,if like you said we don't even have a good ics Rom. If you realy want buy a nexus 7. It's 199 so the price is very reasonable
I'm pretty confident that Chaos is going to get his ICS build perfected with everything working, I mean, look how far he has gotten so far. I wouldn't count on DG though. Too many broken promises.
As for Jellybean. The source code isn't even released yet. Just the update for the galaxy nexus and the sdk. Sdk ports will never be as good as source builds so forget about that. When the source is released for JB I don't think it will be too hard to get an AOSP build going seeing as we already have a good ICS build. The leap wasn't as big from ICS to JB as it was from GB to ICS. So in theory, we will probably get JB (I can't speak for the other developers) sometime after the source is released.
So just sit back, be patient and keep track of any news
This is getting silly. Really! I think it is best to just cut the loses & buy something new. I think the turn around for new OS'a is shortening. I mean ICS isn't even a year old. I've learnt my lesson.
My next contract will only be 12 months. & I will dump the limping HTC brand for something else. That way I won't be disappointed.

I personally want to use my device as long as the hardware is okay. (I still have my HTC hero, haha.) I think the lesson here is to buy a device that has loads of rom developers.
Anyways, thanks for all the replies!
Man everyone is obsessing over jelly bean...why? It's a minor update.. its a miracle chaos got ics running on this device, asking for jelly bean is a new monster. Id rather the focus be on getting ics perfect for the tablet than start over on a new monster. And idk about jelly beans New tablet mode, Id prefer the tablet ui that was introduced with honeycomb.
Thing is google cranks out new android versions quickly. People won't keep this tab forever, including developers. So the best possible experience that takes full advantage of the flyers hardware needs to be the goal not desperately trying to scrape together parts to get another version of android on the tab. Really I'm fine with honeycomb aside from the lag, and ioiwillio is working on that and so far so good

I think I'd rather get ICS running properly too.
Jelly Bean does not have a landscape home screen, which is weird.
The emphasis on voice and search is getting too much for me too. I feel like Jelly Bean was designed to collect information about you. It is getting too big brotherish.
It sounds great to get a Nexus 7 maybe 16g at least. I don't know if they have sdcard slot, that would awesome. The HTC EVO View still has great potential as a school tool. I take it everywhere take notes, make beats, do homework, watch movies, listen to music, text everyone and email. I hardly carry my phone to school or laptop. I think its still very functional, even the Gingerbread works fine on this device. I can even code. It's definitively not a 12 core that I treasure so much as to not carry it outside my home in sunny Southern California.
I would rather use telepathy but I'm stuck in a Dark Age.
Big Bro indeed. As much as I like Google, their goal of collecting all information is frightening. Information is power - someone with too much power is a tyrant.

AS Gumby said earlier i do not think it is too hard to do, i am not even sure it requires Kernel changes in order to get it working, i believe that it can share the same kernel as AOSP ICS, however don't quote me on this. I will have a look at this with whoever decides to develop

This could be fixed i believe, (Not by me) as i don't really know much about the APK's at all. Yes. It seems like I am wrong about it anyway. There IS a landscape mode in the UI.
I am thinking about ordering one. It is a shame because the Flyer has better hardware in some respects (rear camera, SD slot, MHL support). But, Nexus 7 hardware is good enough and, most importantly, it has Google supporting it so we will surely get timely software updates for a while at least. Also, I am sure that there will be a ton of Dev activity becasue this is a Google product and will probably be at least moderately successful.
Hope the community of flyer grow stronger and stronger. Anyway it is not old enough to die, with all this, All the flyer will have a longer life:fingers-crossed:

We need a ICS kernel first, and I was pretty sure the framework changes were rather intensive.
From what I can gather, the changes between HC and ICS and hell compared to the minor update from ICS to JB. If we can get a working ICS build for the Flyer, JB will seem like a piece of cake.
Back to the UI discussion, I'm actually a fan of the layout on the Nexus 7. It's actually more of a traditional phone layout which would work much better on the Flyer if the soft keys were disabled and we could go back to the hardware keys. It would free up the bottom of the screen and give us more usable space.

I'm kinda thinking that too. Ideally what I think would be perfect for the flyer is a launcher with a honeycomb layout that auto rotates to both portrait and landscape and has no dock and the apps and search bar up top just like honeycomb. Then you have the notification bar up top, virtual keys disabled, and hardware keys enabled and bam perfect flyer layout!

It's probably a version problem when Google put it on the store.
It's not compatible with my DX on Sense JB rooted.
However...
It's not compatible with my Nexus S so... I supposed it's the same error that Google+ get on a update.
Last month, a Google+ update change the application as not compatible with other Android versions than 2.2 and 2.3.

I have 5 devices here, compaitble with 3 of them. Weird. What a terrible mess of an OS android has become. It makes development very unpleasant at times, especially at a higher (Java) level. Most of the advantages of Linux are absent (RAM management is comparatively poor due to it being a battery powered device) and a lot of the ease of development of iOS is also gone as you have to lower your SDK version way down as many people are on previous versions.
It's only a keyboard, but it highlights a lot of my annoyances with Google, kotowing to the carriers, to the manufacturers and the complete lack of consistency.
I used to hate iOS then gradually the niggles in Android got very annoying, and I'm leaning more and more towards it as I go! Apple's aggressive favouring of user experience is annoying sometimes for a developer but for daily use for an end user it is far superior.

I won't! Couldn't bring myself to pay an extra hundred bucks for apple branding. Their products are decent but the prices are a bit insane! Windows 8 phones are surprisingly pleasant to use too. I'm all for more competition in the market to push some innovation and try to drive the prices down!

Ross can share the apk of the keyboard (from any supported device)? Wanna try it out before they fix it (if they'll fix fast as hangouts then we have more than a week...) Tnx

I've headed into work, only have the DX with me at the minute sorry. The apk will not load on the DX if sideloaded anyway, unfortunately. Good old HTC removing functioinality with nothing added. Again. Sorry. I'll have a look around online for one, I'm sure it's out there.

Same here yeah. Things not working on a HTC / Android device is becoming the norm lately
its on xda already, just download and install
works perfectly for me, no problems at all, im still on ics btw

Parsing error in jelly bean still. Hmmmmm.
Works for me on JB, but uninstalled it because SwiftKey is just so much better. SwiftKey seems to be the only option which suggests a world while your swiping, the others only suggest after you've swiped. It makes it so much quicker.
And I'm also stock JB rooted...
Using SwiftKey myself! Not too bad.
what are u talking about. i downloaded the google keyboard from play store on my stock ics desire x and use it with no problem.

dont try to be smart now, you do know at least 2 people in this thread saying the keyboard works on jb
But not for many others. There is an issue that's all I'm saying. Works on my s4, s3, nexus. Not on stock in here from play store. Bugs on my HTC one also.
You were bring smart first too, doesn't work i asked the question out of curiosity. No bother on other devices for me. 2 people sitting beside me have same issue.

Yep seems likely. Hope for a fix. Not a big issue!
