For any users on OS X rather than windows, Fastboot for OS X can be found developer.htc.com/google-io-device.html
"fastboot.exe" will need to be replaced with "fastboot-mac" in terminal
There is no need to download the SE driver mentioned on SE developer page.
What will unlocking the bootloader do?
Its not root, is it?
It will allow for the phone to be flashed with unsigned images. This basically means You get root (as long as somebody makes a firmware image with root access).
If this is "basically root", does it means it allows for uninstalling stock apps if the bootloader is unlocked?

Nope. Just tried it, but dunno if you can use Titanium or sumthing similar to remove stock apps....

it isnt root it mearly enables the ability to get root via flashnig a new firmware and other means that are not yet available on our devices.
IT will take some development to get it working ive tried a few thigns but had no success yet, ive sent a pm to the flashtool creator to try to get him to include the play then we can dump and add root then flashback
What are the chances of cyanogen mod coming to the PLAY? Hope it does!

Device needs to be powered off, hold the search button when connecting it to USB cable. (blue light will come and stay on - power/sleep button)
This is weird, I have a Canadian xperia play but i can't press the search button to get a blue light. I can press the back button to get a green light but the drivers you provided doesn't work with this xperia play. I cant even connect to fastboot Mac or windows
EDIT: Is there anyway I can help, provide files and such? I did win this xperia play in a contest, so I do wanna know if i can unlock the bootloader.

When the handset is switched off, connect it to the USB cable while you're holding the search button. That will put the handset in the correct mode (Blue Light)
works every time on my Play.
Step 9 will let you know if you can unlock the bootloader

Even a SIM locked device should get to step 9 where you check if you have a bootloader that can be unlocked. All handsets WILL be able to go into the fastboot mode as its used to connect the handset to EMMA (not tried SEUS yet but guess its the same)
maybe just a faulty handset?

Like I said when I hold the search button it does nothing. My phone is off, I hold the search button while plugging it (both a mac and a windows to make sure) and both times I get the sony ericsson logo then the battery status. I asked about the back button bc maybe the phones in north america are different and that would be the fastboot mode since that's the only one that worked(lighted up I mean).
Are you sure you're not holding down the search button for to long? holding down the search button is also a way to turn your phone on.

Search button works when android phone is on but! when its off it does nothing. It can't turn on the phone or boot into fastboot mode. I have a feeling even if you bought a non contract phone(in north america) it's gonna be locked

1. Disconnect phone from USB
2. Turn off phone (make sure you have at least 50% battery) and wait 30 seconds.
3. Hold the 'Volume UP key' WHILE inserting the USB. --> LED turns blue = fastboot mode.
4. Leave the phone turned off
have you install drivers for fastboot from sony ericssons site? and you dont have to power up the phone press Volume Up and at the same time conect usb cable

rooting the phone should not affect the sound settings.
Did you check the sound options?
Xloud turned on?
I cant get my mini pro sk17i into fastboot mode. Tried waiting more than 30 seconds before plugging in usb cable, nothing.

I don't have SK17i, did you try holding the menu button instead of the volume up button? as they are different models.

You can try wwwong's suggest, or basically just try all the buttons on your phone. The design may be different between models, but you should be seeing same blue color LED when your phone is is fastboot mode

NOTE: VOLUME UP KEY will enter fastboot mode (Blue LED).

Is your phone turned off? Look at the video above. It's the same general rules but different buttons are used.
I am having the issue, obviously our phones are branded... I THINK i might have actually unlocked the bootloader using S1TOOL with TP, but cant manage to get into fastboot... Is there any way to get around this issue anyone? And yes i have done everything right trying to get into fastboot...

If you do not get blue led that means fastboot is not enabled I can enable fastboot and then unlock your bootloader for you.

just enter fastboot mode (by keeping pressed volume up button attach to PC and flash one of the kernels.. if it flashes fine then you have recovery installed.. then u can flash 4pda Rom
Thanks jjdoctor..
Could you please elaborate on that? I spent the last hour trying to find a solution, but no avail..
A link to the solution would suffice..
I keep connecting my phone in fastboot mode as you said, while using Flashtool 0.6.7.0, but it disconnects after a few seconds..
Well, i'll just tell you what i'm doing..
I downloaded the .42 firmware CE type... i have the .ftf file in the firmwares directory..
I run the Flashtool..
Hold down the volume down button and the device is shown in the window..
"Device connected in flash mode"
The green light is on..
After a few seconds, it automatically gets disconnected.. and i remove the battery again an reinsert it.. to connect the phone via usb again...
Thats what i'm doin since the past hour..
please shed some light on where i'm going wrong..
Thanks again in advance...
Ok so have you tried using a software called SEUS (Sony Ericsson update service)? It's simple to flash original fw back

you are connected in flashboot mode, that's why the LED turned GREEN instead of BLUE
please connect in FASTBOOT mode by pressing the Vol Up button while connecting to the PC, the LED should turn BLUE

Using the test point method and relock your phone, your phone may boot up successfully.
Hi there guys! I did the unlock bootloader by the test point method with s1tool!
I had Bootloader unlocked allowed: No and I still have it!
Please help,
pedrorubster a.k.a Pedro Ribeiro
PS: S1Tool LOG: http://pastebin.com/XSDQ2iVf
if your loader version is with a small 'r' then your bootloader is unlock if it 'R' then it's still lock ..if i'm not mistaken
EDIT : use S1Tool to and choose Identify ..again and post your loader version
22-02-2012 11:16:27 LOADER VERSION: "r4A069" It's unlocked right?
yup ..it's unlock ..you can try flash kernel to test it ..
If it goes wrong can I undo?
If I can how?
if it's still lock the log will show up error
if you success ..there will be no error
please read carefully before you want to flash kernel because not many support lww ..if you want to flash back to stock kernel ..just flash back
you can read this for more info

You don't turn the phone on, just hold the button down(Volume up/down, varies with phones) and insert the cable.

Hello good.
Then it means that you can unlock the way fastmode, but then what would be the solution? I overheard that the first is to alter the code of the company X to unlock the fastmode, but anyone knows of that formula? Thank you.
