For any users on OS X rather than windows, Fastboot for OS X can be found developer.htc.com/google-io-device.html
"fastboot.exe" will need to be replaced with "fastboot-mac" in terminal
There is no need to download the SE driver mentioned on SE developer page.
What will unlocking the bootloader do?
Its not root, is it?
It will allow for the phone to be flashed with unsigned images. This basically means You get root (as long as somebody makes a firmware image with root access).
If this is "basically root", does it means it allows for uninstalling stock apps if the bootloader is unlocked?

it isnt root it mearly enables the ability to get root via flashnig a new firmware and other means that are not yet available on our devices.
IT will take some development to get it working ive tried a few thigns but had no success yet, ive sent a pm to the flashtool creator to try to get him to include the play then we can dump and add root then flashback
What are the chances of cyanogen mod coming to the PLAY? Hope it does!

Device needs to be powered off, hold the search button when connecting it to USB cable. (blue light will come and stay on - power/sleep button)
This is weird, I have a Canadian xperia play but i can't press the search button to get a blue light. I can press the back button to get a green light but the drivers you provided doesn't work with this xperia play. I cant even connect to fastboot Mac or windows
EDIT: Is there anyway I can help, provide files and such? I did win this xperia play in a contest, so I do wanna know if i can unlock the bootloader.

When the handset is switched off, connect it to the USB cable while you're holding the search button. That will put the handset in the correct mode (Blue Light)
works every time on my Play.
Step 9 will let you know if you can unlock the bootloader

Even a SIM locked device should get to step 9 where you check if you have a bootloader that can be unlocked. All handsets WILL be able to go into the fastboot mode as its used to connect the handset to EMMA (not tried SEUS yet but guess its the same)
maybe just a faulty handset?

Like I said when I hold the search button it does nothing. My phone is off, I hold the search button while plugging it (both a mac and a windows to make sure) and both times I get the sony ericsson logo then the battery status. I asked about the back button bc maybe the phones in north america are different and that would be the fastboot mode since that's the only one that worked(lighted up I mean).
Are you sure you're not holding down the search button for to long? holding down the search button is also a way to turn your phone on.

Search button works when android phone is on but! when its off it does nothing. It can't turn on the phone or boot into fastboot mode. I have a feeling even if you bought a non contract phone(in north america) it's gonna be locked

Did you do any of these with your device before it screwed up?

Prematurely terminate transfer
Flash with a bad cable
Hard Bricks:

If you dont have waranty open the phone ... detach the battery HOLD VOLUM + and plug USB . Should see it as an " ? Device ". If it see it that is ok. Plug back the battery and use the V+ + USB to try to power it up. And try to see if you have energy in the battery.

Try this:
- Connect your XS to pc using USB cable
- Press volume up + power button for 15 seconds (untill the phone vibrates 1 time)
- hold volume up, now you should be in fastboot mode.
This should work for everyone who flashes a wrong kernel

Depends. I dont think so. Will suggest a full power off. Plug out battery, and with the battery out hold power button to eliminate all the power from capacitors. And after I will try to start it.

Do you have power?
Sent from Hell using Xperia-S
when you hold power button + volume up for 10 seconds does it vibrate?
if it does vibrate or not try this:
1. charge your phone for about 1 hour (doesnt need to have a led light),
2. i guess do u have flashtool already, download any firmware for your phone.
3. since your phone is not booting, once you have the necessary files and place the firmware on the folder of flashtool, (c:flashtool/firmware/your downloaded firmware),
4. open the flashtool then click the lightning icon and choose flashmode and choose your firmware, a tab will flash and say turn off your phone then connect via flashmode (whatsoever), then connect your phone via flash mode (power button + volume down), this will not connect immediately, what will you do is to push the power button+ volume up and wait until it vibrates 3 times, then after that push the power button+volume down, then the pc will detect your phone and flash the firmware, and then wait until it finish, once finished power on your phone. ( it happens to me also that my phone does not turning on and thats what i did).

I know, I know that this question has been always on the forums but mine is different. It really won't open!
Tried the hard reset thing, nope it doesn't work at any combo.
Flashtool? Nope it won't work. PC never detected it. Pressing the volume up / down button won't work so is the camera and the power before plugging, during, and after the USB.
I don't know what else to do!! :

but it's working great before it. it just turned out to be like that when I was changing the sim card.
tried flashtool but i can't connect the phone. i'm in the part where you have to press the back button (volume - or +) when connecting it.
Dont try flash, just turn on, eg hatd reset (volume up+power on/off button) and let it connected, dont try go to cwm. Just let it lets say boot, I know, screem is dark but after while youll see in flashtool main window that phone is detected, it took me one or two mins to get it. Then you can try fastboot and flash correct kernel. And try to remove the SIM card or insert the old one.

hard reset combos: power + vol up / power + vol down / vol up + vol down / power + vol up + vol down. I've tried them all. not a newbie here so don't treat me like one please
rom + kernel = pure blood sola v2. i don't think it's the rom's fault tho since my sister has the same rom and her's works like a charm. the rom has been in the phone for more than 2 months without any problems (my phone's). files are accessible and photos are transferable.
How did the problem arise? everything was working great till i changed the sim card. then poof! it won't work anymore. to be honest it wasn't my phone. i'm just trying to fix it
not turning on. no power. no backlights meaning its not the display problem. when you plug it in via usb / wall charger there's a red LED but after an hour it disappears.
really need your help guys
could work
I have a Xperia U and triying to port JB to it I briked two or three times.
I hold power botom and it vibrate and doesnt happen anything ok.?¿
The possible solution could be this(for my works)
Charge the phone like 1 hour for my doesnt charge with the animation but its for security.
With the nest steps you are going to lose all CWM and tweaks and apks but personal data still there.
You have two options:
Flash a new rom with flashtool, but when you pluged with volum - you hold it for allmost all process becose for my i conect to PC and its goes quikly so i cant do annything.
If the phone is not recognised by Flashtool:
You have to repair it with PC Companion or Bridge for Mac, and also the same hold volum - almost all process.
For my it works, tell my if for you works:cyclops::cyclops::cyclops:

i have encounter the same problem but i after i read this post, i revive again my phone, by just flashing the original kernel using flashtool and hold the fastboot key or the volume up key until the flashing was finished,
Hi all i have bought an Xperia J off ebay and the phone has a pattern lock which the seller can't remember how can i get past it i have tried numerous things Flashing ftf with flashtool but the phone wont go into flash mode even with all drivers installed it just keeps going into fastboot mode which is strange i tried to flash an .img and it says "Error Device must Be Rooted" which means the bootloader is locked. I can't use SEUS or PCC as i can't access flashmode. i have tried to access the service menu via the emergancy call screen to rest customization but that did not work just said this is not an emergancy number. I found a tutorial for using adb but as usb debugging is not enabled i can't use adb shell. I have ran out of ideas so open to sugestions.

take the battery out then put it back in, and then at the same time hold down the power button and the down volume button. Then what should happen is there would be a white screen that opens. Then you use the volume buttons to scroll up and down and the power button to select. Then once the screen is open you scroll down to factory reset/hard reset.

1) Download correct ftf from general section, general one for your device.
2) turn phone off with power button under the back cover till you get the 3 vibrations.
3) download flashtool and install all the drivers.
4) start flashtool and close PC companion ( if you have this open)
5) plug USB into phone
6) hold volume down and plug USB into pc, ( should get a green light on xperia sp on led for short time)
7) flashtool should identify device attached in flash mode.
8) select flash and use correct tft you downloaded earlier.
You may need to get files ready as phone can then load to Sony logo again after a few minutes. Got to flash it quick. May need to do it 2-3 times before you get the timing right, took me a few attempts. Hope this helps.

yes you go to flashmod, but then you will need to browse and locate the file on your pc (where ever you downloaded it to) where is says firmwars use the box to the right to move through your drive and find the ftf. You should get something like a drop down list. For myself downloads go into my user download folder.
So long as your phone is turning on that is a good sign.

When mine was stuck on the logo I had a short time between pluging in USB +volume down and it booting to Sony Logo probably about 1-2 minutes. In that time I had to get the flashtool started, it look me a couple of attempts to get the files selected quick enough and ready to flash. Only suggestion is keep trying or move the ftf to flashtool firmwares folder so you can access ftf quicker and not have to worry about finding them.

when flashing an ftf file, your phone must be completely turned off, when the flashtool says "connect your device" what you're going to do is hold the VOL DOWN button while connecting your micro-usb to your phone, when you connect the usb to your phone, the green LED light must light and then when the light comes out, that's the only time you'll release the VOL DOWN button.
Glad it worked for you.

first, keep the phone for charging.. that time u will either get a charging notification or a green led will be lit up, when u see either of these two, disconnect the device and it will stay off. Now move to the next step
Visit this link:
http://www.sonymobile.com/us/tools/pc-companion/
Click on Download PC Companion
Run the software and install it
Turn the phone off and disconnect it from the computer
1. No matter what the program says do not connect the phone until you complete step 9
2. In the welcome screen you will see the different modules available for you including the "Support Zone" option. Click on "Start" below it.
3. On the next page Click on "Start" under "Phone Software Update"
At this point if you get an error stating that "Unable to install update components" or "Server is busy" , then please proceed to step 12
4. The program will say that there is no phone connected. Click on the option below that reads: "Repair my phone" the program will issue you a warning about the content that you will lose during the update
5. Choose the option to continue.
6. The program will issue a final message warning you of possible data lost during the update. Click on the checkmark and then on "Next".
7. After that, the program will download the necessary information (5 to 6 minutes) and it will present you with a list of phones.
8. Choose your phones model from the list then click on "Next" then you will see a new section telling you how to connect the phone. (don't connect it yet)
At this point the phone must be off and disconnected from the PC.
9. Connect the cable to the PC not to the phone, then while pressing and holding the indicated button (in the steps on screen an specific button will be shown for you to press on the phone) connect the cable to the phone and keep holding the indicated button until the program says "the update of your phone has started..." (in some cases a message of "Installing drivers" will appear before the message of "the update of your phone has started..." is shown.)
Please do let me know if this has worked
I have an htc droid dna running cyanfox 4.4 its locked and i cannot get into it, it also has fast boot enabled so i cannot reboot into recovery, what do i do? Ive looked but cannot find anything like it.
Plug your phone into your computer. open a command prompt in your platform-tools folder, and type adb reboot bootloader. This will reboot your phone into bootloader, and from there you can access your recovery to do whatever you need to.

Sorry i forgot to mention but my usb debugging isnt enabled. And it being locked i cannot get into it to enable the usb debugging or disable the fast boot.
You are running a custom rom?
In any event, hold down power until it hard reboots. Once the screen shuts off, keep holding down the power button and press the volume down button at the same time, this should boot you into bootloader to access recovery.

Yes i do have a custom rom. I tried your tip but it did not help. When i tried (while the phone was on) the phone shut off and the second the screen went blank i pushed down the volume. But it did the same thing as always. Htc logo flashes twice then it boots up.
Can anyone else give some insight?

No, password locked so i cant get into the phone and change settings. And i cant do a factory reset because the phone has fast boot mode enabled, and i dont have usb debugging enabled. So im in a corner here. I was hoping disconnecting the battery would work like a hard reboot and kick off the fast boot but it did not work.

You don't need usb debugging enabled to do fastboot commands.
Fastboot oem task 28
Should wipe data for you.

As ive said before, the phone is not in fastboot mode for programming. The fast boot im talking about is the mode on some phones that makes it boot up faster because it doesnt turn the phone completely off. Because of that i cannot reboot into my recovery or fastboot.

Holding power and volume up until you detect the reboot and then switching to holding only volume down overrides that. Make sure when doing this you are not plugged in.
Soooo, why not just input the password to unlock the phone, just a shot in the dark OR give it back to whom you stole it from?

I did not steal this phone. It was stolen from me. That is why i know everything on the phone, except the password. And the volume up and power method did not work for me.

It is volume down. That could be why it didn't work.
