Hi all i have bought an Xperia J off ebay and the phone has a pattern lock which the seller can't remember how can i get past it i have tried numerous things Flashing ftf with flashtool but the phone wont go into flash mode even with all drivers installed it just keeps going into fastboot mode which is strange i tried to flash an .img and it says "Error Device must Be Rooted" which means the bootloader is locked. I can't use SEUS or PCC as i can't access flashmode. i have tried to access the service menu via the emergancy call screen to rest customization but that did not work just said this is not an emergancy number. I found a tutorial for using adb but as usb debugging is not enabled i can't use adb shell. I have ran out of ideas so open to sugestions.

Or try this one
take the battery out then put it back in, and then at the same time hold down the power button and the down volume button. Then what should happen is there would be a white screen that opens. Then you use the volume buttons to scroll up and down and the power button to select. Then once the screen is open you scroll down to factory reset/hard reset.

For any users on OS X rather than windows, Fastboot for OS X can be found developer.htc.com/google-io-device.html
"fastboot.exe" will need to be replaced with "fastboot-mac" in terminal
There is no need to download the SE driver mentioned on SE developer page.
What will unlocking the bootloader do?
Its not root, is it?
It will allow for the phone to be flashed with unsigned images. This basically means You get root (as long as somebody makes a firmware image with root access).
If this is "basically root", does it means it allows for uninstalling stock apps if the bootloader is unlocked?

it isnt root it mearly enables the ability to get root via flashnig a new firmware and other means that are not yet available on our devices.
IT will take some development to get it working ive tried a few thigns but had no success yet, ive sent a pm to the flashtool creator to try to get him to include the play then we can dump and add root then flashback
What are the chances of cyanogen mod coming to the PLAY? Hope it does!

This is weird, I have a Canadian xperia play but i can't press the search button to get a blue light. I can press the back button to get a green light but the drivers you provided doesn't work with this xperia play. I cant even connect to fastboot Mac or windows
EDIT: Is there anyway I can help, provide files and such? I did win this xperia play in a contest, so I do wanna know if i can unlock the bootloader.

When the handset is switched off, connect it to the USB cable while you're holding the search button. That will put the handset in the correct mode (Blue Light)
works every time on my Play.
Step 9 will let you know if you can unlock the bootloader

Even a SIM locked device should get to step 9 where you check if you have a bootloader that can be unlocked. All handsets WILL be able to go into the fastboot mode as its used to connect the handset to EMMA (not tried SEUS yet but guess its the same)
maybe just a faulty handset?

Like I said when I hold the search button it does nothing. My phone is off, I hold the search button while plugging it (both a mac and a windows to make sure) and both times I get the sony ericsson logo then the battery status. I asked about the back button bc maybe the phones in north america are different and that would be the fastboot mode since that's the only one that worked(lighted up I mean).
Are you sure you're not holding down the search button for to long? holding down the search button is also a way to turn your phone on.

Search button works when android phone is on but! when its off it does nothing. It can't turn on the phone or boot into fastboot mode. I have a feeling even if you bought a non contract phone(in north america) it's gonna be locked
Yesterday I installed this rom, version 146, it's amazing, very fast and got no Wifi bug (button disabled), everything working fine.
Spent all the day outside home, data connection worked perfect. Went home on the night, got the wifi, no problem.
So, tomorrow when I was going to work, I picked up the phone and there was no data connection, strange. So I restarted the phone, still no data. Tried to find the phone operator, I restarted again, nothing.
I restarted to recovery, fixed permissions, still no data.
No data at all, so I thought about doing some backup on the recovery and install another rom to check it, tried to backup, but there was no space on the phone, and the recovery does not let me choose the ext_card to backup.
So I started choosing some options and then the recovery crashed, it's stuck, with the text "no files found", it's stuck there. I'm unable to boot, to do anything.
I don't know how to remove the battery, so I'm really stuck.
Three things:
1) No data connection, is this a bug?
2) How do I remove the battery to restart?
3) Can I install another recovery? Like the munjeni one?
Please help

---------- Post added at 09:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:12 AM ----------
Oh noes. I was able to enter the recovery using the power + volume up combination. So, I restored my last backup. The phone turned off. And does not turn on again.
I already tried the power + volume up combination. The phone simple respond with the first vibration, then the next three.... but does not restart, there's nothing on the screen. It's stuck again.

If I plug the usb cable the red light turn on, but the phone does not.
The only thing it does it's vibrate one time when I click the power button and four times when I press power + volume up.

Thanks, I did that and it's fixed. I was able to install the FreeXperia rom again
The only problem that I found now it's that after installing the rom I went to install the munjeni kernel. Tried using it, but did not work
On boot there's one message saying that the android process stopped and the NFC too.... strange.
The message does not go away
I think I will need to flash the FreeXperia rom and stays with the default recovery

Yeah, I will do that, stay with the FXP kernel. The problem it's that the munjeni kernel has more options, like open the ext_card and save backups there..

Does it support ota for example from FXP 145 to FXP 146?
Newest munjeni kernel it's incompatible with most of the custom rom and cause issues.

Can you boot into the bootloader?
To enter bootloader, hold volume UP and power.
Upon entering the bootloader, you will notice that there is no 'menu' to enter fastboot or recovery. Unfortunately, since the stars didn't align properly, we were unable to tell the new bootloader where to load the images that contain the menu from.
In light of that, you'll have to navigate the menu blind. Use the volume keys to change selection, and the power key to select.
The choices are (in order of pressing volume down):
Start - boot the phone normally [already selected]
Restart Bootloader - reboot into the bootloader
Recovery Mode - enter recovery (CWM)
Power Off - powers the phone off
So, to get to Recovery, you would press volume down twice then power.
Thanks I'll try that out will post results shortly

I tried that nothing comes up even while blind navigating nothing happens tried rebooting into both recovery and bootloader from the power down options and nothing other then this problem the phone works all except both Wi-Fi 4g Data but both were working when I first flashed the ROM

If you have the android-sdk boot into the rom, and try the command
adb reboot bootloader
or
adb reboot recovery
Ok I'll give that a shot I'll try it out when I get off work.

Hello all I was trying to update my SS to the newest version and I did everything correct... or so I thought. I downloaded it and then launched the apk and installed it, then I installed the recovery again in the actual app. I then went to restart it so I can get the new nightlies on it for kitkat and it showed the Motorola symbol at the start and then a black screen. Did hard restarts and everything in my power and my phone does not move at all. It just hard restarts and does the same thing. Turns it off then starts back up by itself and gets past the logo when SS would normally start up and then black screen... no buttons lighting up at all or anything. Any idea? I have insurance and extended warranty on it but kind of would like to see if I can save it or not.

Ok. Hold the Volume Buttons and Power button all at the same time and when you see the screen flash hold those same buttons again and you will see a couple of options. First of all the phone needs to be powered on normally without pressing any button comibnation (in your case it is a bootloop).
if flashtools detect the phone and finished preparing the firmware you select, it will ask you to power off the phone and connect it in flash mode. in your case you will need to force power off by pressing voulme up+power till phone vibrates 3 times. after that you disconnect the phone from PC and now you need to start the phone in flash mode: press VOL DOWN while connecting it to PC and then flashtool will start the flashing process.
check your PM's
Yea, try the older version, I also got error on newer one.
Sorry for late reply, got a bit occupied.
And yes, as mentioned above, disconnect your phone, wait for at least 30 seconds, press and hold power+volume up till the time the phone vibrates thrice, now release the buttons and wait for another 30 seconds. Start The flashtool and select the firmware to flash and let it prepare the files, once it asks to connect the phone, connect it while holding the volume down button

And for a change u can try inserting the main end of USB cable to the port of your laptop /desktop, keep the phone connected to it beforehand. Once I had problem flashing my phone, actually my jack was too dirty, so the cable use to get disconnected because of dirty jack. That worked for me.
Best of luck.
