How to control syncing with google accout? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know how to control when syncing contact in our phone with google account? I mean can choose which data in google or in our phone is priority.
Ex: If I edit contact in both my phone and google (use computer) but only one is edited correct so how can choose which data will be replace by the other?

Add a letter to the name of an individual edit and give it a little time if you see a same name with an extra letter in your emai or on the phone then try it the other way around. (Ex. make a copy of one contact with a phone number in your email and add a number or a few letters off from the original name then wait and see what updates! Then do the same thing from your phone make a copy contact with a slightly different name and see if it is in your gmail! I don't believe you can modify WHAT gets synced persay but you can completely turn sync off until you are ready to back your items up which in turn also saves on battery life as well.

Help sorting my contacts

hi, xda`lers
i have a question... a week ago i sortet all my contacs in my contact book by putting the first name in the first name box and the last name in the last name box, so that the built in facebook stuff recognizeses the names and links them to there facebook picture and so on, like it should be
my question is now.. now that i put the last name also in it , the contacts are sortet by there last name first meaning, that some random guy called brad pitt , instead of being in the categorie of "B" now is unter the category of "P"
sure i could link the fb accounts manually, but i flash a lot, and to do this every time would be a timekiller
so?, someone knows, how to sort all the contacts by their first name?, would be awesome
thx for the help Jur1nator

Well, are these contacts synced with outlook? If so, you can change the sort settings in outlook and I believe they may be seen differently on ur phone. Also push this to the XDA_UC experts who probably can build some kind of registry setting wherein those fb settings remain constant in case of new ROM update.

dont forget that even after you have changed all your current ones, when you add a new one it will still save last/first unless you go all teh way to the bottom of the new/edit page, click more and change teh displa as

[Q] people app

I added a new contact today (time warner) and I noticed that I had options to save the number as company main, car, radio, assistant as well as the usual home, work, etc..
When I go to edit an existing contact these new (to me anyhow) options are not there.
Is there a way to get them there?
I think it may be handy to be able to save company numbers in their own category and I already have quite a few saved as contacts
Looks like it depends on the type of contact that you save it as. Exchange provides all the options. Google has most and the phone even less. Least options is the SIM.
Where are you saving them to?
I just looked and the time warner contact says phone and some others say google. So I guess that explains it.
Thanks

How can I edit contacts in batch?

Hello, I must edit all my contacts to remove area code. My new mobile carrier doesn't support it. I've tryed export it from google to csv -dos, csv outlook. Then I edited with Excel and removed the numbers, but when I try to import it, everything went wrong, without any configuration/
Does someone know any app that to this job? Or someone know how must I proceed? Thank you !
hey
why don't you define in excel maximum digits as the length of your numbers?
for example if you have this number stored:
Eytan
10123456789 (1 is the area code)
execute in excel so it saves the last 10 digits so it'll apear like this:
Eytan
0123456789
you should limit the numbers of characters in a cell.
i actually don't remember the exact steps but i'm sure you could find it with search, it should shorten your "work".
good luck !
You should be able to export from Google as CSV edit in Excel then reload as CSV
actually I tried all those things, and when I try to export it again to google, I lost the previous settings.
I found a brasilian app "operadora DDD" and it does the job! It´s in portuguese, but u can acess the app, then UNCHECK "ativar", and press menu on your phone. U must chose "alterar agenda", click on the number and try every option. when u check some box, the number change showing your choice (with/out " ( ) ", "-", "+" etc)

I used to use Contacts Clean-up by Peter Baldwin, but that is not compatible with newer versions of Android. If you have access to an older phone, you could use that to edit them and then resync to the new phone. That's probably what I'm going to do tomorrow...
hmm, this is interesting and yet frustrating. I'm also in need to edit my contacts in batch, especially to change the area code and include a country code, but it seems that the .csv that I've edited cannot be read by google contacts.
anybody can get around with this?

[Q] Display contacts in an auto expanded list. Is there an app?

I've been searching all over and can't seem to find a suitable app for this.
A family member has jumped from an endless parade of dumbphones to an Android based smartphone. Got all setup with a Google account and then I sat for about an hour or so manually entering names and numbers into Google Contacts, so they'll sync all nice and easily to the phone.
Now, no matter how I try to explain it, she doesn't quite get that if you open the contacts list on the phone and select a name, it presents you with all configured numbers, home, cell, work, etc, which you then just tap one to call.
No, she'd rather do extra work and create a separate contact, one for each possible number. "So that it looks like it used to...."
"Mr Contact One (home)"
555-555-5555
"Mr Contact One (cell)"
555-111-5555
"Mr Contact One (work"
555-222-5555
So, does anyone know of a contacts app that displays all numbers in an auto-expanded list? Sort of like...
"Mr Contact One"
\_555-555-5555 (home)
555-111-5555 (cell)
555-222-5555 (work)

[Q] Defining default contact image per contact?

When I sync with google all the contact images I have on the various contacts sync over fine. But the second I sync with facebook etc those default images gets overwritten with whatever stupid image people had decided to use on facebook.
Is there no clever or smart way for me to define which i want to use as a default, like you can do if people has several numbers, in that case you can define what you want as the default one etc. But I have been unable to find one for contacts
The only way so far I have been able to actually get the contact photos I want, is through defining them manually all over again, which means I have to find the image on my phone, choose to replace the image I already got and recrop it in order to get the image I want to show. And naturally the second facebook etc decided to take a dump and have a resync its rinse and repeat and its annoying me greatly
So is there any supported and/or smart solution to go about this rather then having to manually define all the images over again on a regular basis?
