Guess we need to move out of the US sprint users - HTC EVO 3D

That really sucks.

Seems like the gist of the message is that US carriers have so much individual bloatware to account for (sprint tv, nascar, vcast, etc) that an HTC or Samsung can't just roll out a generic ICS for each device. That's what sucks.

Almost makes me want to wait until november for the next nexus phone but I can't wait that long and Samsung seems to be on top of their game as far as upgrading to ICS before anyone else.

Yes, Samsung is on top of their game and I can also assure you that once Samsung ICS update.drops, so will their kernel source. There won't be any of the waiting 2-4 months BS that HTC is notorious for to release source.

Hmmm must be recent that Samsung stepped up their game at updating phones.... When I had my Epic 4g (not touch), it took Samsung forever to update to gingerbread.

Wont know for sure till a US variant gets an official update... But they seem to be doing a bit better... And the epic 4g (not touch) gingerbread woes are blamed on alot of things but mostly samsungs failed effort of a update in a timely matter

I've just learned to take a deep breath and enjoy what we have, our devs are making some very good highly efficient sense roms. Ics is super cool don't get me wrong, but must of us are stuck on gingerbread for a while. Might as well find a good rom, flash some themes if need be and relax. Very happy with performance and battery life with the 2.17 base sense rom. Its surely good enough to hold me until the end of the year until ics finally drops.

I doubt its just about bloat... HTC sends a build to sprint and they send it back if it has bugs/w.e. And that process is continuous until everything is the way sprint/HTC wants it...
If it was just to add bloat we would have had leaks/ota by now...
(my views/what I heard about it)
I honestly am gonna blame HTC (no support for this phone/constant excuses regarding updates/source)
If they didnt have 50+ devices on the market to deal with (updates and bug fixes) im sure ICS would be here sooner...

Honestly, what's the hype? I flashed ics to my tablet and went right back, not that impressed.

Same here. Early next year, my wife's contract is up with Verizon and she'll be switching to Sprint. She's volunteered to take my Evo 3D and I plan on snagging either a Galaxy Nexus or whatever the new hotness is at the time. I've always wanted one of the Nexus variants so that's probably what I'll end up with.

We’ve been hard at work on CM9 since Google released Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) into the wild last month, and things are slowly starting to come together. Google did a great job with ICS and added some really awesome features which in some cases replace or deprecate functionality that we had in CM7, so we are reevaluating all of our customizations. A number of devices are already up and running with CM9, and the focus is currently on getting as many devices ready as we can. The first devices (besides the Nexus S, which you can already get from Koush’s section on ROM Manager) that we’ll have ready will mostly likely be devices based on OMAP4, MSM8660/7X30, and Exynos. We also have some Tegra2 tablets in the pipeline such as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Asus Transformer. Our goal is to provide continued support to all CM7 devices back to the QSD8250 series of devices such as the Nexus One. I don’t want to make any promises at this time, but that is the plan. And sorry Droid1 owners, we’re dropping support for you. Time to upgrade
There are a number of challenges that we are up against. Google has made some pretty major changes to the Android framework that break compatibility with older proprietary camera and graphics drivers in order to achieve some pretty insane performance, but I am confident that the team will be able to overcome these issues like we have in the past.
For those of you who like to build CM from source yourself, you probably know that the spin-up time when starting a CM7 build is absurdly long due to the high number of devices in our repository. Koush and Arcee have put together a solution to this problem that adds new devices on-demand to your local repository, saving on both bandwidth and the long startup time. Some other great enhancements are coming too, like a completely overhauled music app, a new file manager, and a new launcher based on stock 4.0.
If you have a Nexus S, you can check out the code and build for yourself today. More devices are on the way, and I’ll send out these status updates as we make more progress.

Android Jelly Bean Rumored for Q3 Release

Google I/O is in Q3 so we can probably expect it by then.
Just for those of you wondering how long until Jellybean. Hopefully, if they keep releasing new versions, manufacturers will start dropping their skins so they can keep up. (I know that's never going to happen, but wishful thinking!)

The Evo 4G will never and was never planned to receive ICS, and yet there are completely functioning ICS builds available for it, with working camera on top of everything else besides the obvious 4G (and maybe a few other things, I haven't followed OG Evo development since I upgraded to this phone).
Official releases aren't a huge deal unless we need them to fix something. The problem with ICS on our phones have to do with the difference between it and GB, as well as our camera. I do not foresee JB to be a big difference from ICS, kind of like Froyo to GB.
So in the end an official release won't matter as long as JB isn't a huge difference over ICS, and we can use the official ICS release in order to make sure the camera works.
You're going to be able to run JB on this phone, do not worry.

I know the phones hardware is more than capable of handling JB. And I'd agree with everything you said, but our phone has some unique needs that others don't. Like you mentioned, the 3d/camera is one of them and also Wimax. ICS has been around for quite a while and there isn't a single ICS build for our phone that is a nice stable daily driver. Getting some of our phone's features to work without the help of HTC may be a bit tough. The development scene of the Evo 3D isn't huge either, though thankfully we have many great devs.
I came to the Evo 3d from the HTC HD2, now that's a phone that seems to be able to run just about anything. Ridiculously massive development scene. It had ICS running long before many other phones and it isn't even an android phone.

I can agree with that, mostly. What I'm trying to say is that, after a release from HTC, we hopefully won't have to worry too much about JB in the future.
Plus as long as jellybean drops within eighteen months technically we are supposed to get it .

Pretty sure Sammy is the biggest smart phone manufacturer in the world.
Honestly, the next phone I get, HTC and Sammy are battling for my money. I said after my Epic that I would never buy another Sammy phone, so I skipped the SII in favor Photon because I felt the 3D was useless. Now that I've played with the SIII and the EVO LTE I am fairly equally impressed by both devices.
It's going to come down to support and device build, who releases source the fastest and who updates the devices the best and which one builds the best feeling device.
Assuming there is an S4 and Sammy doesn't blow it, I could very well see my self getting it.

Samsung does update quick. Ignoring the wider user base of GSM carriers, CDMA carriers such as VZW and Sprint always tend to lag behind updates. Due to CDMA restrictions that can't be open-sourced, Samsung doesn't control the entire software update and adds to the delay. Take a look at devices that were released with Gingerbread and see how many of those have ICS. Chances are they're almost all GSM devices. The HTC Rezound on Verizon came out later than the Epic 4G Touch and has yet to see ICS. The Evo 3D and Design 4G won't see ICS till next month. Besides, the Epic 4G Touch was receiving ICS leaks since early this year.

? Hmmm I don't know, maybe because it's not carrier branded, a clean-slate version of Android, and significantly cheaper to buy off-contract... Seems to me like there's still plenty of incentive to buy the N4 regardless if the OG has JB or not.
Whatever the reason, I really like this phone and am glad I bought it. However, unless things change before my contract is up, I'll avoid LG like the plague when choosing my next device. There is no reason anyone can give to me...to me... not anyone else, that in my mind justifies this piece of hardware not having official JB released for it by now. The work the developers are doing with one hand tied behind their back is awesome, but it shouldn't have to come to this. I'll vote with my dollars next time and go back to Samsung. It's a shame, too.
Like what has been mentioned and discussed ad nauseum since December, this device very well could have shipped with JB if they wanted it to. It most certainly could have been upgraded by now, especially with international versions of JB out. That tells me it is 100% AT&T who is holding this up.
Have a great weekend! Can't wait to see what the devs have cooked up!

Seriously, what if we never officially get JB? Will we just have to rely on the N4 conversion? Will it affect development?
And how angry will you be?

So you really feel the need to complain about jellybean in 2 diff threads. This thread is a waste of space. You just created a topic in general and now q&a. Come on bro

ATT is probably too busy updating the note, note2, s3, one x, and all the other big selling devices. That said, looking at LG open source site there is only one device showing more than one os update, and that was froyo to gingerbread to ice cream sandwich. So jellybean will probably be the end of official updates for this phone.
Hint's the reason to why I swtched from this to the note 2 plus the fact that it's just a sweet ass phone lol so smooth n fast has a better pic to than the LG sound is better everything is lol Lg just sucks on upgrading there stuff that's all it really is Stuiped SOB's lmao

In this case it's AT&T. If our developers can reverse engineer a hack to convert this to an N4, the mfg could have put JB on this device with the schematics and kernel files in their possession from day one. There are no two ways about it, simple as that. I mean they built both phones at the same time with almost identical specs for crying out loud..

But as far as I know, Google is mostly responsible for the N4 software and LG is mostly responsible for the OG.
Google shouldn't have anything to do with us not seeing an update, just like how the N4 users aren't thanking LG for their updates.

I didn't make this thread to complain. I was just curious. I had to call AT&T on another matter, asked about JellyBean, and then posted the other, not to complain, just to report.

I wouldnt hold my breath. Converted when the method first came out and have never look back. I don't know why people are so scare of bricking Im yet to see some one bricking their phone converting and in case you didnt know there is always a chance of bricking even if you are just flashing a simple script all it takes is a simple mistake... why do you think devs always have disclaimers on their roms???? I'm just waiting for 5.0 to drop and you will see a ton of people converting. No one likes old news man same goes for phones why would you want to stay on an outdated OS? makes no sence.

It is unsure at this point.
From the link in the OP.
All with nary a word from The Now Network, which is usually pretty on top of announcing updates for devices. Ergo, at this point, we're not entirely sure if this is the start of a full-on rollout or just a "soak test" of sorts. We're thinking the former, but until official word is muttered from the lips of Sprint, it's a crapshoot.

From having previous experience with Att and Android it could still be a while. Att gets in no hurry for updates. I don't know what is involved with their testing of new firmware but it's ridiculous.

I think the testing isn't what kills it... I think att doesn't test at all half the time. What do they have to lose if we don't get updates. People rarely get mad at carriers when the manufacturer can be blamed.
It would not surprise me find out att won't push the update because it says "lg" at the top of the phone instead of "att"

and why incur the cost, if there's virtually no recourse for not releasing the updated OS. But if that's going to be the case, have the manufacturer release the upgrades, requiring that their own crapware is included in the release.

Guys, you've got to remember that us, the people on XDA, arent the majority. Most people don't know what jellybean is and if they do they couldn't tell you the difference in jelly bean and ICS. AT&T knows this so they don't bother with updates, they're lazy and couldn't care less about the minority. Honestly, i don't think any of the people who handle the updates at AT&T know whats new in jellybean. Maybe they should hire some xda devs to handle their updates haha

Heck, with how well this phone runs on ICS, aside from getting Google Now I'm still not entirely clear on what the JB ROMs we have give us, and I generally pay attention to these things...

I completely agree, I'm honestly kinda scared that the jellybean update could make the experience worse, at least an official update. This is the best phone I've ever used, even with ICS and little rom support. We've got great devs and even the stock experience isnt bad. Plus, google now is cool but I'm happy with this phone as is, I've got my nexus 7 for that haha
I had CM10.1 on my last phone, I really don't feel like I'm missing anything significant at all with rooted stock ics on this phone...
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
I'm happy with rooted stock as well, except that I am hoping for a reduction in the excessive msm_hsic_host wakelocks that drain our batteries (seems this was fixed on the Nexus 4).

It's quite a bit faster on jellybean and has Google now and a different font and a better modem.

does this means that a dev could get the update rom from sprint and port it to att? or are the phones too much dissimilar to do that?

I've been on SnowJB for a while now. It's still about the principle. Sprint released jb, even if it is just a soak test. AT&T is usually the last to get out updates for devices that have been released on multiple carriers. From my experience and research it is usually T-Mobile first, Sprint second, and ATT/Verizon tied for last.

No update anytime soon. Trust me. Att wants you to buy new hardware. (Lgog pro)
They make money buy getting new contracts. After new og hits we get jb. I had HTC vivid there was no ICS till onex was out

Which version of the LGOG sold world wide is closest to ours?
i'm used to the One X and Rogers&At&T being identical.

That makes no sense because everyone who bought a LGOG shouldn't be anywhere close to getting another two-year contract. The LGOG is only 5 months old.

Definitely. I'd like to see things out faster, too, but you hear a lot of pure speculation and conspiracy theories around here.
