[Q] Is my Bell replacement plan voided? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I have my Atrix unlocked, rooted, etc etc.
I realize that my Motorola warranty was voided a long time ago, but I'm still paying $7 a month to Bell for their smartphone replacement plan.
http://www.bell.ca/Mobility/Promotions/SmartPhone_Care_warranty_plans
I'm so sick of paying so much for this garbage, but they've still got me scared I'll break my phone one day and not have an alternative without their stupid plan.
If something happens to my phone and they see the "Unlocked" on my boot screen or something like that , would they not honour their replacement plan?
Does anyone have any experience with Bell and this SPC plan?

You haven't voided your Motorola warranty for sure by unlocking. When you unlocked it said "MAY" void your warranty.
As for your replacement plan, I haven't heard of anyone yet with any service provider being denied a replacement/warranty service because of an unlocked bootloader.

Thanks for your quick reply. That's reassuring. But it means I still have reason to cough up $7/month ...

I feel your pain. I have 5 phones on my plan with AT&T, so I am paying a wee bit more! LOL

plan seems to work
My Atrix just started having the problem with the touch screen freaking out (Google it). Anyhow, I called and was offered a choice of 2 replacement phones:
Samsung Galaxy S2
HTC Raider LTE
They didn't ask for any information regarding the serviceability of my present phone. I was fine sticking with the Atrix but will enjoy a bit of an upgrade to the S2 especially since it should get ICS by June and the Atrix definitely will not be upgraded.
With the S2 HD launching in a week, I would sure like to get that one...not so much for the LTE but rather the increase in screen size and resolution.
I wonder if I can take the unused replacement S2 to a Bell store and switch for the S2 HD as they are looking to be at the same price point...

That's actually really awesome! It's a good thing I'm still paying for this stupid plan.
Maybe there's a way I can intentionally bust my Atrix. It would be sad to see it go (especially since I have 2 docks for it), but I just want a phone with functioning ICS...

Most likely not. I just have a feeling.

you could always just take the sim out and call them and say you lost it...
I think the $7 plan covers loses for $50?

Wow... I never thought about that. The website says it does cover loss or theft (but for $150).
Their Terms and Conditions document link leads to a 404 right now though, so I can't really triple-check...

HTC q/a - bootloader and camera issue - response audio attached

So I was on a webex today with 2 guys from HTC about the new evo 3d and the evo view tablet..
they opened the qa - and it was asked what the hell happened with the evo 3d right camera being out of focus as well as the bootloader..
they claim to not know anything about the evo 3d camera being jacked.. and they had an interesting response on the bootloader -- attached is the Q/A Session audio straight from HTC.
** had to fix the attachment - not all of the mp3 was uploaded **
Cliff notes for those of us who don't want/are unable to listen?
sure - bootloader voids warranty - bootloader will be available soon - but on a 1 on 1 case with htc customer support - after you give them your esn so they can track the device if you ever try to send it in for repairs.
Camera issue - they claim they never heard of -- they where later emailed with link to the forums here with all the people with the screwed up camera issue complaints --
htc view tablet will hopefully be getting honey comb at the end of this month..
That warranty talk is bull****. Of they just remove encryption and let us root it then it will be the same as HTC devices released in the past. How could this possibly void warranty? Nonetheless, who sends phones to HTC anyway?

I would imagine that ESN info would carry over to repairs with the phone carrier.
As for why it would void warranty, the biggest factor would be overclocking. I'm not sure exactly what and how other system modifications could affect long term stability of the phone, and they probably don't care. The fact is, allowing us access opens the phone up to potential problems not covered under the warranty as provided.
if he have sprints warranty it wont even matter.
I've already talked to a lot of couple regional tech managers for sprint and theres nothing even close to being setup to track unlocking, so it really won't change anything except after 1yr and only then if you don't have sprints ESRP or TEP
I'm calling BS on the warranty voiding and case by case. If that's true, then a lot of people will be pissed. I'm calling it now.
And honestly, this is the first time I've heard of the out of focus thing.
If they unlock my phone ill give them the esn.... **** it warranty never did me anygood when I get a new phone ever few months...

I didn't hear anything about tracking the esn number... unless i missed it. It would be pretty low of htc to void your warranty if it is an obvious hardware issue such as loose micro usb port or dead pixels. No other phones with unlocked boot-loaders do that including Motorola, Samsung, and the nexus phones. It was also hilarious when at the end of the call you can hear the guy in the background pissed off and swearing, wish I knew what he was saying when the lady started to talk over him.
bull crap about warranty. I mean what does unlocking bootloader have anything to do with warranty. Motorola the company who started all this crap is not even saying this. Unless the CEO opened his mouth too fast and is eady to swallow is own words then I can understand. Other than that this is bull****.

Exactly.
Technically, rooting voids the warranty anyways. We've always just had the luxury of reverting it back to stock and undoing whatever mods we've made. If someone isn't prepared to accept that rooting voids your warranty, then perhaps that person shouldn't be rooting to begin with. If the warranty is that important to you, then leave the phone stock. I don't give a crap about the warranty. If i bork my phone by messing with it, then that's my problem (hasnt happened yet.....knocking on wood)

I have Black Tie insurance, which covers accidental (which in my own theory covers my phone if it was to get bricked.) So I'll send my ESN away. The only problem with this is if you ever wanted to resell the phone...
with Black Tie, don't they get you a new phone? or is it a refurb ?

When people are taking 3d video and I am assuming pictures as well, when viewing on a non 3d screen and it shows as side by side, the right picture is actually blurry and the left picture is much clearer.
If Sprint were to actually track rooted devices and not warranty them under their plan, they would be losing a lot of $7 a month charges that has probably just been extra money in their pocket for the most part.
Yea I was just thinking I still have TEP to fall back on, call in the phone stolen or something. I doubt ill brick my phone but something like the back light went out or whatever other manufacturer defect I will be expecting a replacement.
I think the reason rooting a phone freaks them out and makes them void the warranty when someone does it is because of overclocking. If you burn out your processor early because you are pushing it far beyond the speed it was meant to go, they don't want to have to pay to replace your phone.
I would bet if there was no such thing as overclocking they wouldn't really care. At least the manufacturer wouldn't...the carriers would still cry because you can circumvent their $30 a month tethering plans...

Tmo will only warranty replace your Vibrant with Cliq2, Defy or a cheap BB!?

I've been having problem with my mic on my Vibrant, so i called Tmobile to see if they would do anything about sending me a replacement Vibrant, I have a 2 year protection that I am paying $7/month. They told me that Vibrant isn't available anymore, neither is SGS 4G and my ONLY 3 options of replacement would be some crappy blackberry, Defy or Cliq 2.... I told the guy those are all down grades from what I have and that I didn't want any of those and he agreed with me...
Basically I got no where, spoke to the manager that told me the same thing, then I spoke with loyalty department (been with T-mobile for like 7 years) and the best they could offer was was $20 off HTC Amaze...
Anyone else think this is ridiculous and/or have any suggestions on what I should do? I don't think it makes sense that they should downgrade me... if anything if they don't have anything as good, then give me something better.
If anyone else ran into this please let me know what you guys did to get a replacement?
I would either call them back and try to get a galaxy s2 or call samsung directly and use their warranty. The tmobile version of the s2 is called the hercules I believe and samsungs direct warranty only lasts a year
Wow that sux

That's crap...let us know how you end up.
I also had a problem with my vibrant with the incoming calls. I called Tmobile to replace my phone with another vibrant under the warranty, instead, they gave me a Htc Sensation .
what?!
Thats ****ed up. I pay the $7 a month too and the first time it was giving me trouble they just sent me a new one and i had to return my defective unit. Thats all. If it ****s up again they better not ask me to downgrade
Try replacing mic I guess

That's exactly what i said! Guy told me to call Monday bc their inventory gets updated then. So I'm going to call them then, but that is still bs, i run 4 businesses, if my customer isn't happy i upgrade them or refund them, not charge them more or downgrade them... I don't understand how that even makes sense. I'm going to try calling them on Monday, but to the those of you guys that are paying for the warranty don't bother, apparently once they run out off the phone you have they might give you a Nokia flip phone if they don't have any more budget Android phones to give out.
I called Samsung but they only have the warranty for 1 year, and you have to send your phone in for 2 Weeks while they work on it. So i guess they want you to use the payphone while you wait..

Wow OP I've also been with tmo for 7years and also paying those ****s the 7 bucks a month too. I don't have any real issues with my vibrant other then well it being a vibrant, I'll be dam if they try to downgrade me to some crap ass phone call those tards back every day tell you get what you want man that sucks. Good luck ill call them and talk **** about me paying 7 bucks to get a downgraded phone tomorrow.

I would actually not mind having a defy, I am into a lot of extreme sports and it would be nice to have a tough smartphone. It would be nice to have a phone that I could keep in my pocket while I am commuting to school on mtb trails instead of in an otterbox in my backpack.
Does anyone know if light bleeding from behind the buttons onto the screen is a warranty issue? It has been happening ever since I got this replacement phone.
The DEFY is just slightly rugged. It's not full on military spec so a case is still recommended. The DEFY is not that bad of a phone though with excellent 3G reception. The CLIQ2 has problems, and a Blackberry.. oh lord. But you do have a Samsung Vibrant - a phone that is over a year old now. What do you expect? Most of the $7.99 is for insurance anyway not the warranty.
First thing I would do is cancel that $7 joke of an insurance policy. They tried that crap on me before with my Behold II and I called corporate and they replaced it with a Vibrant. Then I went online and cancelled $28 worth of insurance (4 phones). If you think about it, total up the insurance money you pay each year and that would be enough to cover at least two GalaxyS 2's ($84x7 years).
Just called them OP. Same story, I'm getting a call back on Wednesday to update my status regarding the Vibrant being in stock. They did however offer me the glaxy S 2 for 50%...$200 for an upgrade! I'm saving that for Nexus Galaxy.
All three of these choices are downgrades. I'm definitely canceling my insurance after this.

That's what I am going for, I'll just try to get them do give me 1/2 off the price of upgrade on Amaze or SGS 2, Ill just sell it and pick up a Nexus. Either they do that or give me something that isn't a downgrade! I'll settle for Sensation.

Well be it 1 year or older this makes no difference, when I got the warranty it was in case I needed to replace my phone it was going to be covered for 2 years with something equally as good, if they would have told me they would instead give me a flip phone I would have taken my chances... Defy is a POS, it has slow CPU, smaller screen, 2GB of memory, thinker, worse battery life... I don't think there is a single benefit to this phone except that it will work if I drop it in the toilet.
the battery life is not worse, it's much better, the CPU is not far off from the Vibrant and as far as I'm concerned stock vs stock the DEFY is a better more consistent performer. I would know, I had both. The GPS worked too. If you've never had one I can't even see how you would run off at the mouth about how much of a POS it is.
The age of the phone DOES matter. The value does not INCREASE on a phone. You can't expect to get a major upgrade just because they don't have any more of your phone. Get real. You don't pay *that* much for the extended warranty, and the warranty does not guarantee anything equal or better replacements. Read the fine print.

A few things don't make sense.
I'm assuming your Vibrant is out of the 1yr manufacturers warranty, and you are reffering to the $7 a month Assurion insurance.
If you are indeed out of your 1 yr warranty then T-Mobile has no obligation to even offer you anything, not even a downgrade.
Now, if you are trying to resolve the issue by using your Asurion insurance then you shouldn't even be dealing with T-Mobile. T-mobile has no clue what Asurians current inventory is. Assurion claims are done completely seperate from T-mobile. Assurion claims can be filed at the following link:
http://www.phoneclaim.com/t-mobile
Maybe I'm missing something or not understanding. I think the above info I provided is correct but who knows maybe I'm wrong.

The warranty is actually split in 2 parts, one is the damage/stolen warranty that you would have to go through Assurion, the other is an extended warranty that extends the warranty an additional year past the manufacturers 1 year warranty. The idea is if your phone gets screwed up with the fault that isn't yours, Tmobile will replace it.

Thanks, usefil link. I didn't know you had the option to choose PHP Insurance alone for $4.79. That sounds better than the PHP bundle especially considering T-mobile isn't doing a warranty exchange with a comparable model. What do the terms and conditions say? I would read that in detail, if they have to give you a comparable model then I would fight it.
here is what the fine print says:
3. REPLACEMENT PRODUCTS.
If the identical Covered Product is no longer available, We will replace it with
a product of comparable functionality. In all cases, We will determine product
comparability including functionality at Our sole discretion. Technological
advances and product availability may result in a replacement product with a
lower selling price than the original product.
A replacement product may be either new or refurbished, at Our option. Nonoriginal manufacturer parts may be used in refurbished products.

I want them to tell me how Defy and Galaxy S have the same technological functionality...? besides making phone calls I think these 2 are pretty different...
Yea i just dropped my insurrance.....
My screen is shattered and they offered me the same crap.....ill buy another vibrant off craigslist and then when my contract is up.....ill go to sprint and not waiste my money again on the shotty insurrance

Should I get warranty for my Amaze

So I just purchased Amaze from eBay, now I need to decide if I should get warranty for it through squaretrade Normally I buy it, since phones with eBay don't come with warranty but this time they are quoting me me an outrageous $72 for 1 year, almost 1/5 the price I paid for phone
Build wise the phone looks pretty sturdy and is in mint condition, so wondering if I should get it? How is the general feedback about the phone...are there lot of RMAs
I know about the squeak issue with some phones, but luckily I don't have it and its also covered by HTC since back cover is an accessory so i'm eligible..
You still have HTC warranty. I bought phones from eBay and HTC honored the warranty.
If you have T-Mobile, you can call them and tell them you received the Amaze as a gift and you can add insurance, warranty or insurance + warranty.

As I said, HTC only provides warranty on accessories not the phone
I don't have T-mobile...but do you know how much will just the warranty normally cost through TMO?
EDIT: Just noticed, for rooting/custom ROMS I would have to unlock the bootloader through HTCdev tool, guess it would pretty much void any warranty ?
If it was me, then yep I would be purchasing a warranty, just in case as you just never know man.
Also of course, anytime you root your phone will void a warranty, but can always install the original GB 2.3.4 back on it and be good to go. Heck, I know people that forget to put it back and still are fine, but I would take it back to factory myself.
Good luck!

No. HTC does warranty the phone still.

HTC will honour hardware warranty - provided the damage wasn't the result of software overclocking - even after unlocking the device. Software issues you'd be on your own for with custom ROMs... but I'd assume they'll support you if you revert to stock.
I bought an Amaze off eBay back in January from who I thought was reputable on eBay. Used the phone for 3 1/2 weeks and T-Mobile shut my service off. Phone had a fraudulent IMEI. The guy I bought from refunded me after I shipped it back, but do yourself a quick favor before buying a ST warranty and other accessories. Call T-Mobile, tell them your IMEI and just make sure yours is clean. You'll feel better going forward buying accessories and stuff.

If that's insurance from T-mobile then I'd remove it right away. The reps are required to get a certain amount of sales per hour and even if you have insurance on your line, Assurion will not cover the phone for damage because the phone was not bought from T-mobile. I was a rep there and seen people get declined because of this same reason. I would call them up and downgrade to warranty only. It's what I use, because I know if I send in a damaged phone that it's still cheaper than sending a phone into Assurion for an insurance claim. The only thing the warranty won't cover is lost/stolen. If you do damage your phone you just don't tell the rep that it's damaged and you'll get a out of warranty fee on a later bill.

Yes. When a phone was used and is registered on another account. It'll show the warranty is invalid. If you say it was a gift and add warranty/insurance, they will honor it.

As a former rep, why would you even carry insurance through T-mobile? The warranty is $4 less per month and the OOW(out of warranty) fee is cheaper than doing a claim with Asurion. The highest I seen a OOW fee was $115 for the SGS2 and the Amaze was $105. Also, the OOW fee drops as time goes on, but the Asurion claim fee remains the same high price.

ALL WIND MOBILE USER - Get in here

Sent my phone for repair since they don't replace phones on the spot anymore.
Been at repair for 1-2 weeks. Stock ROM
Get a call today saying that a repair would be ~$600, and if I didn't want a repair, that I'd have to pay a mandatory $25 fee just for the analysis since "the software is different" and the mainboard was tampered because apparently I opened it up and played with it. Wtf do I do? This is ****ing ridiculous?
I've never opened up my phone EVER... this just put me in the worst mood. The headphone jack not working was obviously because the headphone jack is broken from not being able to put up with constant usage, not because I tampered with it.
EDIT: I will never purchase another phone from WIND, and will probably cancel my plan with them once I finish off my Tab. Rogers may charge you more per month but all my family members have had warranty issues dealt with immediately and without this kind of bull****

Hey, I am in the same boat as you, sent my amaze in on the tuesday after Thanksgiving just got it back on Nov 2nd , 3 weeks.
Same excuse I was given as you - off warrenty mainboard tampered etc. 600.00 to fix my phone yea right, the phone wasnt even that much when I got it. I was on stock rom, s-on not rooted. The 25.00 fee was waved cause I wasnt going to pay it and my full 80.00 was refunded.
Now I have an electronic brick and I swear I am done with Wind and HTC I will never get an HTC phone again Samsung all the way for me. I wont ever get a device from Wind they dont even have a phone protection plan for situatuions like this. Not to mention the bluetooth on the Amaze is beyond terrible HTC should recall this phone.
It just gets me though that I got the same excuse as you did mainboard tampered etc.
It is like they don't know what is wrong with the phone so they pull an excuse outta there ... so they dont have to replace it.
I have to agree I am gonna call and make a fuss I refuse to have this tab either they wipe it or replace my phone. When I was with Rogers my device was delt with even off warrenty and that was when I did root it. Rogers may charge more but hey I guess the saying is right you get what you pay for, lesson learned!

How did you get the $25 waived? I have a contact @ a wind store that said almost ALL the phones that come back the repair center says "mainboard corrupted/tampered with"
These guys are thieves. I'm just going to buy Nexus phones straight from google from now on.
Please keep me updated! I have so much work to do this week, 3 upcoming exams i have no time to sit on the phone and argue with WIND atm
I have the same phone. What happened to the phone for it being sent in for repairs?

I am getting the run around big time.
At the store I was told "we are just the middle man" call customer service and ask for retention.
I call, the person who answers, as we have come to expect from Wind does not speak English very well and
also has absolutely no idea what anything is. They have no business working in customer service.
I asked to speak to retention I am told oh sorry I can not transfer you to retention unless you are going to cancel your
service. I asked to speak to supervisor and I was hung up on 3 times, never got a supervisor on the line.
I absolutely officially HATE HATE HATE Wind mobile.
I went to a different Wind store to ask them to call for me and I am told oh
you have to go to the warranty store you went to and they can help you, even though the person at the warranty store told me "we are just the middle man" so again worthless Wind employees. I am just very frustrated and pissed off.
I didn't pay the $25 fee because I said no, 3 weeks and it isn't fixed and you think I am gonna pay, nope.
So it was waved.
My next and last step is to speak to the store again and have them call (as I wait) who ever needs to be called so I can file a complaint.
I know I didn't break my phone and I am not gonna be stuck with a tab for it.
Go make friends at a corporate service store.. My guys in oshawa mall have been great!
e-Sex.. All of the carpral none of the tunnel

Can an Unlocked S9+ Be Flashed to VZW Firmware?

I ordered an unlocked S9+ from Samsung for my wife last night since it was cheaper, and the articles I was reading said it was the way to go as the US carriers were screwing everyone over with their price increases. Unfortunately, I started looking into it more after I bought it, and I'm concerned that I'll regret this. It sounds like things like WiFi calling, video calling, HD voice, Visual Voicemail, etc. don't work on the unlocked version. Additionally, it sounds like updates are even slower than Verizon.
Basically, these are going to be non-starters with my wife. She doesn't care about the VZW bloat and would much rather have those features. Is it possible to flash the unlocked firmware to be VZW stock firmware? I think I saw this done on the S8, but I'm not sure if that was available on release day or if she is going to have to wait months for the VZW stock firmware to be leaked or something. Should I just return this and pay more for the Verizon version, or can I get this to work without pulling my hair out? Thanks for any help!
Probably, but not immediately
I face the same dilemma - I have pre-ordered the unlocked version from Samsung, because it really annoys me to be gouged by VZW, but I would like the VZW features you mention. As you say, the GS8/GS8+ unlocked could be flashed to the VZW firmware, so I expect that it will also be possible to flash the VZW firmware to unlocked GS9/GS9+. The catch is that that's not likely to be day 1. And if you do it later, it will probably be a hassle, because you may lose settings, etc. I.e. your wife will not be happy.
Frankly, for the $90 difference, it's probably not worth the hassle. If you value your time more than burger-flipping hourly pay, you'll probably do better holding your nose and paying the VZW gouge. Of course, you could just be patient and wait a couple of months for the price to come down/BOGO deals to emerge, etc. and/or the VZW firmware to be available to flash, but that's un-American - we want gratification NOW, dammit!
While I didn't get the unlocked one I did save money by getting in on the Best Buy deal for $100 off the phone! Verizon at the time was listed at $915 on the site, got $100 off so $815 out the door Beat Samsung's price from the get go... awesome. Verizon version of the 9+.

I believe that people have had success flashing it to VZW if you want to go that route.

The only way to escape that stupid fee is to buy an unlocked phone and swap SIM from an old phone. They should waive that fee if you buy at full cost from them or if you don't need to have a Verizon employee switch your SIM for you.

Flashing for the most part has been only partially successful. Most can not get Video Calling to work all other features seem to work. 1 guy in the these forums claims everything works on his. I haven't been sucessful with getting the integrated Video Calling to work, My account blocks it and won't let me unblock it for the Galaxy S9 my other lines with carrier phones the don't have blocks when I switch SIMS the block switches to whichever line the Galaxy S9 is on.
I would say this, save yourself the hassle and keep the wife happy, buy the VZW version from Samsung Directly. If you buy it outright just make sure VZW releases your IMEI since the phone is paid off. Then if you want to leave VZW or sell the phone everything is good to go and your not handing the money directly to those greedy blood suckers at VZW. For myself I'm willing to go without their features, besides the service I won't buy anything from them anymore I last bought a phone through them 4 years ago, and now that Tmob has got real 4G I'm gonna port my number out.
