I also really don't care about an ICS release - though I'll happily take it, stock and rooted.

When the ICS kernel is ready, you can flash the i9100 stock ICS rom.

I'll probably try it out at the very least. I think I'm addicted to flashing.

I just don't like thw TW launcher as much. It's good, don't get me wrong, but I wish it had more flexibility. TW 4.5 has some of those, but then it lacks some from the official TW3.
Other wise, I like some of the other additions by Samsung. Specially the changes in Clock and Contacts.
So now I am aiming for stock i9100 + Nova/Apex launcher

I like Samsung based over aosp based too. But development on both fronts helps make for an overall better experience for anyone who likes flashing and tinkering with there phone.
As far as tw launcher, it has gotten allot better, but no matter whether I run asop based or Samsung based I always seem to find my way to go launcher or adw.
Once ics is working well enough for me to keep it on my phone longer than a day or two, I'm going to spend some time checking out the nova launcher.

I partially agree. I don't really care about ICS, but I'll probably update to it when it comes out. I am perfectly happy with the setup I have now. I dont't understand why people are acting like they "need" it.
I also like AOSP and its simplicity, but I love the media format support provided by Samsung roms. Full 1080p wmv's @ 10mbps? Yes please. I don't care for Touchwiz launcher itself though.

And I can't live without allshare
I might be crazy but if a rom has it removed on install I will instantly flash another rom with it.

1.) Flashing ROMs doesn't mean one's device doesn't work. It simply means they want a change from stock/whatever they decide to change from.
2.) Flashing ROMs doesn't disable your device as a communication platform. AOSP based ROMs (With ICS, at least) have a better calendar, camera application, and are compatible with virtually every app you currently have now.
3.) Not trying to sound like a ****, but if you just want it to work and aren't concerned with flashing the ROM or anything, why are you on XDA Developers?

(assuming this is true) as much a visual difference is slightly disappointing, a guts upgrade to ICS is really what matters most. I'll take a normal UI that operates faster than a fancy UI any day.
I like how the one ****ty leaked Rom that was posted gives them the basis to write this article.

personally, I dont care too much for a couple of reasons. 1. I actually liked Touchwiz (at least 4.0+) and 2. I wasn't going to be running stock anyway, so if I really need that ICS interface, CM9 will 90% sure be on our phones. And, at least we're (by that I mean the Galaxy S 2) getting the update. Look at the Captivate for example
Most of us won't bother with stock samsung UI so it won't matter. CM9/MIUI V4 is in my future.
Non-issue article. Move along.
Touchwiz 4.0 on Android 2.3: Looks great!
Touchwiz 4.0 on Android 4.0: Dear god that looks ugly.
Since when did people start believing that if we got ICS that it was going to AOSP? We didn't get AOSP gingerbread.....its why all firmware releases are delayed. It gives manufacturers time to put on their UI......not to mention AOSP ICS is the corniest looking POS I have ever seen......the icons are way oversized.....the corny folder crap we have had on GO for a year. I disagree, touchwiz covers up the best parts about ICS, it went well with touchwiz 4 on gingerbread because it looks better than stock gingerbread. Stock ICS IMO is way ahead of anything else on the market
The article is referring to the leaked roms on the I9100 there is still time for Samsung to wrap ICS up in a newer/revamped TW UI.

I actually dont care either way the looks can be changed easily for both rooted and non rooted people. Honestly after having ICS'd out on my phone for a daily driver for a good while I switched to MIUI because the color combo of ICS gets old quick
doesnt bother me, i love touchwiz and i just wanted ICS underhood features... this is GREAT news for me... looks perfect, i would miss it if it was removed... i dont think ICS looks all that amazing IMO
I'm positive we'll get a good version of ICS whether it be official or from a DEV what difference does it really make?
not much it will be here within the next three months either way

Sence 3.0+ is almost perfect
Just power menu screenshots, Fasterfix and Adfree makes it perfect. Leedroid does a pretty good job at making the last 2 happen
something different really...all android os have the same layout pretty much and I would like to see more voice command. example: you tell the phone what you want to do and it will be done. you control the whole phone with your voice instead of your fingers, phone does all the work while you tell it what to do.
I loved the Samsung Galaxy S on 2.2... The functions such as media buttons in the lock screen and drag down menu... as well as the wifi, bt, etc built into the drag down menu. And it was always quick for me.. No lag..
But it needs to be custom, the ability to easily run back to your stock rom, and then back to the custom rom on start up? Such as a computer when you run windows then ubuntu?
Just my thoughs.....

Yes. I'm riding solo right now, so it will take a while to make. But I am building from source and completely revamping GB 2.3, I am going to make my own music player, gallery, merge the messaging, dialer and contacts (similar to goSMS) for smoother functionality, and a lot of other features, I plan on a few major releases, and get ppl to port it to their phones. [Request] Pure ASOP ICS ROM

Having just come from the inspire 4g, I've had the luxury of having asopx, which if you search their forum you'll see its as close to Google source as possible with all the cm crap gutted, I've been hoping to see one pop up over here but didn't know if perhaps there just wasn't any demand here in Samsung land. Anyway the phone is awesome, just dislike touchwiz, and want the bare bones stock look and feel of ics, to which I can then customize from there. Seems like all the roms thus far have traces of touchwiz and or tons of cm tweaks and apex lanuchers and all that nonsense that we should have the ability to add from a bare bones build, kinda like a foundation to then just customize from there.
Please show some love if you want this as well, would gladly donate for some dev to get on it :beer:
CM9 and AOKP are the closest things you will get to a pure AOSP OS.
If you wanted guaranteed pure AOSP, you should've bought a Nexus device.
BTW, that "CM crap" as you put it, vastly improves the ability of the OS. As does (and this is my opinion only) Touchwiz4.
Why don't you build your own op if you're not happy with what's offered.

Instead of criticizing why not try helping? There actually is a pure AOSP based ROM that we recently got support for named Codename Android. I'm not sure if it 100% running on our phone yet but they are working to do so.

Codename Android on my Nexus S [link] is really nice. It was one of my favorites. If we could see that (at some point) on our phones, that would be awesome.
I built and ran AOSP ICS 4.0.3 for my Nexus S and I have to say that while I did it just to see it work, I didn't run it long as I missed the features that CM and other open-source projects such as Codename Android have to offer. But, to each their own.
Just my $.02.

Sorry if this post came off as if I was some form of elitiest, I was merely suggesting that if we had a nice bare bones build people can thank tweak as they saw fit, I do not claim to be an Android developer and if I could I would love to build what I'm requesting, unfortunately I do not posses those skills ,hence attempting to lure in unsuspecting developers with donations as I do respect and understand the amount of developers that do this in their spare time while maintaining real life jobs. Secondly, my past experience with cm has been poor with the inspire, perhaps it was just not as highly regarded in the inspire space as it is elsewhere. Cm just didn't play that well with that device, perhaps I was too quick to judge having moved devices.
For those on akop, is it the stock launcher, email, and messaging apps? They don't have any screen shots? I'd like to get away from touchwiz

I share this opinion. I can honestly say if I had to choose between my GS II and the Galaxy Nexus with a locked boot loader, and not rootable, I would take the GS II every time. I would not choose to run Stock ICS over CM9, AOKP, or like stated above, TouchWiz (on ICS).
As others said give AOKP a try. Its definitely daily driver stable and complete. It looks like stock ICS but adds so many features. Things like the power toggles in the notification shade, adding apps to the lock screen as shortcuts, the list is huge. I can't make a firm decision between SHOstock2 and AOKP. I spend a week on one, then swap, repeat. I think people give TW a hard time. Its not sense, its not in your face and leeching into every part of the phone. Its really subtle once you put on a different launcher, even the official att builds. When I run AOKP I miss the TW music player (with controls in the lock screen and notification shade), the video player, and the camera more than anything else. When I run TW builds I miss the people/phone app and calendar. Those are the differences to me between TW and AOSP, a vast majority of the ICS experience is the same in the two.

Nope that's only for TW no way of easily porting that over and since cm is for many different devices... Let's just say it would be a massive nuclear pain in the ass to even attempt to port it over... So my g2 came in tonight from amazon att on contract for 29 bucks. I assumed I was going to have to root and rom it based on some reviews. My last phone was a nexus 4 with kit kat on it. I always run stock or close to stock android. But I have to tell you, once I put nova launcher and played with my settings..... I don't really see the benifit for me to change it. I didn't expect the phone to be nearly as nice as it is. I thought it would be a sideways move from my n4. But everything about the phone suprisingly great for me so far.
I do wish I could select other apps for the multi tasking window, but whatever.

Nice to know, I currently have a N4 and I have been considering this phone. Based on the reviews I wondered if I should wait and see what other phones come out over the next 6 months but your post gives me optimism.
Phone is pretty sweet.
I like the toggles on the device. Battery life is soo good compared to the nexus 5/xperia z1 that i previously owned.
Ive been stuck trying to figure out how to get twrp installed. Even though i read the instructions haha they dont work for me sadly, i suck.
this phone is a beast.
I love this phone and everything that comes with it. I unlocked my bootloader, rooted it, put in a custom recovery and flashed a custom ROM . Then I realized it was better stock. All the custom ROM did was remove the cool stuff and made it look like all my other devices. They weren't nearly so cool when stock so they can stay custom but this baby I put back to stock. Mind you, I left it rooted and with a custom recovery so I can still tweak things but I don't lose all the goodness that this phone is.

I'm glad you like it. and it sounds like you want the same stuff I wanted out of this phone. Look around the forums and find things. For example I am running cleanrom just to get the crap off of it and its still like LG Stock except the crap and i am using Nova to look "Vanilla". Also I used Xposed Framework to change a few things around the way I like it. There is also a thread on here to use split view. its a port from the LG G Flex and works excellent. This is the link to set up Split view. Check out my screen shot to see some of the Xposed mods you can get to make it yours.
This dev forum got a lot more attention than I expected and its paying off bit time also just makes this phone that much more awesome.
I uploaded some pics of the Split-view along with some Qslide apps open too.

I agree and it keeps the devices unique. I find that the phones become more generic. All the stuff is the same. You just might be able to change the color on one before the other catches up. Even from one device to the next, all the custom ROMs end up looking the same.
To be fair though, in a some cases
it is a definite benefit. I would never be running kitkat on my Note without a custom ROM. The battery improvements can be huge as well.
So I guess it's the device, benefits and good ole personal preferences. Regardless, isn't it wonderful to have the choice? And the hard work these people do to create these ROMs, for free, is amazing. Either way we're lucky.

Since there are all these mods and debloating possibilities available there really is no need to use a custom ROM - not only on the G2, but on many other devices as well. It's just a bit more work; but hey, isn't that part of the modding / flashing fun?

Mines still stock rom. I did root, flash a few mods, and Xposed. Has all the features I want from a custom rom but several LG specific perks like Popup Calls, SplitView, Floating apps, etc.

Kit Kat vs jelly bean is a totally different animal. When I swapped over its immediately noticeable how much snappier the whole thing is
You'll get bored eventually and will try aosp/cm rom. But with G2 there's always option to use both end whenever you want to

mine is in the mail.... thanks for the different views on stock and modding....
So day 2 or 3 now. Took it to work today and battery lasted easily twice as long with very heavy use then my n4. I even ingressed and didn't need to charge it.
I'll hvae to look into the split screen mod, that would be pretty useful.
The ONLY irritating thing that I've not been able to simply fix is the volume for google now is the same volume adjustment for the keyboard. I like a nice quiet but audible keyboard and a loud voice with google now, I'm sure I'll figure out a way, but its not readily obviouious how.
I thought I'd end up rooting it the first day because I had the latest and gratest kit kat on the n4, but I've got no desire to do it. I'm sure I'll get board and do something different eventually. Just cant leave well enough alone.
I just picked up my n4 to copy the ringtones over to the g2, and what did I do? tried to turn it on looking for a button on the back. Already trained!
Seriously I think this is the sleeper phone of the year. I snickerd at my friends n5 today. I told him it was cute and it was a poser's development phone. I was only half way joking.
