[Q] SGS2 is not responding to USB cable - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear all
I read that in order to root my SGS2 I9100 I need to make Kies 2.0 work with my phone. I have never downloaded Kies on my pc (Win7 64bit), so I went on the samsung website and installed the correct Kies version for my phone.
After installation I opened Kies 2.0 on my pc, then connected my phone via USB, however my phone seems not to respond to the usb, other than that it went on charging. Also in Kies under 'Connected devices' it still says "Please connect a device".
Other things that I tried:
rebooting,
troubleshooting connect error under Kies,
reinstalling and rebooting, Applications>Development>USB debugging On/Off,
Wireless and network>USB utilities>USB mass storage
Nothings seems to work. It's like when I connect the phone to my pc via USB, my pc doesn't recognize it as any device, I don't even see a 'New usb device connected' or anything, it's also not listed under device manager. And my phone sees my pc only as a power source to charge...
Some other information:
- I have never flashed or rooted my phone
- I forgot which android version my phone had when I bought it (i think 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 but not sure), but I have updated it once via Settings>About phone>software update. It is now version 2.3.5
Has someone encountered the same problem like above? What can I do?
I probably missed something, someone please enlighten me

Try to reinstall kies and then download and try if odin detects your phone
Sent from my sgs2 running cm9 using xda app

Use the Samsung cable .
jje

I think it's a problem with a USB cable too

And make sure you are plugged directly into a mainboard USB port, and not using a hub, or keyboard pass through or anything like that.

I'm using the USB cable that came with the phone. The 'jack' that goes inside the phone looks the same as from the cable of the charger.

Reinstalled Kies. Same problem exists. Excuse my foolishness, how do I know whether Odin is detecting my phone? I downloaded Odin3 v1.85, I don't see any phone information field.

Tried that, didn't work. I also tried on my laptop, it's not detecting my phone either, same problem as on my pc.

pd: i cant put a link yet cuz "To prevent spam to the forums, ALL new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages. After approximately eight posts, you will be able to post outside links. Thanks for understanding!" (stupid rule btw)

According to the samsung website the driver for SGS 2 is in fact the Kies 2.0 software itsself. Which driver did you install? Is it possible to send me a link via pm, or in the url replace . with 'dot' or something

Make sure you have your usb settings in the phone to Kies or to ask when you plug in. If you are running any launcher other then touch wiz, Kies will not recognize the device. So if you are running a different launcher, clear its defaults and go to the touchwiz home and then plug the USB in.
You probably downloaded the Kies for the I9000, it doesnt work on TMO Vibrant. There is no Kies for USA available for that model yet. Someone suggested to download the Kies from the Canadian Samsung site instead. I believe that Kies for USA will be made available when Froyo is released for the Vibrant.
I downloaded Kies for the USA yesterday and my Vibrant connects fine.

Where did you find this? On the Samsung site just now I get this message when looking for Kies on the US site:
Currently, there is no offiical version of Kies Stateside for the SGH-t959 (Vibrant).
I think he used the UK, or Canadian version but when you install it you select USA.
I used the Kies found @ http://www.samsungapps.com/about/onPc.as posted by abhiku in a similar thread. Works perfectly on win 7 64
Could you be more specific? That link redirects to http://www.samsung.com/apps/ which doesn't help much.
oh shiii, looks like they pulled the version i dl/d. thankfully, i store installers of this nature on a backup drive. uploaded to sharebee for ya: http://sharebee.com/8cf24208
Thanks, but that didn't solve the MPT USB driver failing.
what exactly is happening? like when you plug it in is it just saying "failed to install device" or is the pc recognizing it for usb mass storage, but nothing else. Some more details would be very helpful.
I have the home screen on TouchWiz
I plug the phone into the USB port
Several drivers install properly
I get the MTP screen on the phone for a few seconds and then it returns to the home screen. A dialog box on the computer says:
Device driver software was not successfully installed
MTP USB Device XFailed
I have tried 3 versions of Kies and 3 different USB drivers
I tried the I9000 version of kies... I could not figure out how to make it work with the Vibrant.
I dont use Outlook... what are the real benefits? I saw it an sync your music? Is there a basic guide/Q&A for Kies somewhere?
I tried to make it work on a rooted phone and it just fails.
First it wanted me to disable USB debugging, and when I did it failed to connect anyway - the software is a piece of rubbish.
Anyway Samsung states in their FAQ that Vibrant is not supported yet
http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa..._ID=314807&PROD_ID=560&PG_ID=-1&PROD_SUB_ID=0
the screen on the phone just flases the mtp showing a usb plug
The version of Kies that I successfully connected the Vibrant to is 1.5.1.10074_2.
Windows did all of the driver downloading for me lol. Here is a screenshot of the SGH-T959 connected.

I get the same. This software is junk. And what I saw of the interface makes it look like it was written in the 90s.
From what I am seeing on the international side, it may be that Froyo is installed using it so I was hoping to get things working in anticipation of that. Plus, it has a movie converter so its pretty simple to convert movies to the right format.

You have a driver issue, please don't try to tell us, the experiences the problem is something else, use common sense, uninstall Kies, reboot your computer and install again. If that doesn't do it then you have a problem with your cable or your phone

tried to upgrade today but

for some reason when i used kies, it suggested to upgrade to the newest version, so i figured since my phone connected why not.
Now after upgrading my sgs2 will NOT connect to kies....
been reading around for about 45 min, and cant seem to find a fix that works.
Anyone on xda here have the same problems? and anyone find a walk around? or solution
Thanks all, looking to try ics!
reinstall kies and dont forget to disable usb debugging in developer options in settings
tried both, still just sits there trying to connect...
Choice take phone to Samsung service centre .
Or from XDA developers forum flash stock rom via Odin .

Uninstallig kies does not uninstall you samsung drivers. On the PC uninstall kies go into device manager, connect you phone to the PC and uninstall all the samsung drivers. Disconnect the USB cable. Reinstall kies then plug your USB cable back in to the phone and PC. Also try using another USB port, cable or both.

Galaxy S3 will not install drivers when connected in download mode

I am trying to root my SGS3 international via Odin. The problem is that when I connect it to the computer in download mode, nothing happens. The device is not detected and the drivers are not being intalled. Worst of all ID : Com does not turn blue/yellow and the device is not added to Kies.
I have installed Kies, separate driver packs, I have tried different cables, different usb ports (on and off the mainboard of the PC), I have googled the problem for hours and still cannot figure it out.
Any advice?

You might have the same issue as I had.. I flashed a new firmware via Mobile Odin Pro.
Drivers shoudnt be installed when phone is in download mode but when its connected to the computer.. Before or after KIES is installed.
Did it work? Does anything happen at all?

Thank you for your reply.
I thought of that myself. But in order for me to use Mobile Odin Pro, I nedd to get root and in order to get root, I need to use Odin to flash the root files.
Nothing happens at all when the phone is connected to the computer in download mode. If the phone is booted in android, the drivers begin to install and Odin sees the phone (needless to say, I cannot flash while in Android mode). When I reboot in download mode, nothing happens.
have you made sure kies isn't running in the background? You need to kill all kies processes before using Odin or it may interrupt your flash. Aside from that you could uninstall kies and drivers and just try inhaling the drivers on their own? Which Windows version are you using? Xp can be problematic
Any idea whatsoever would be welcome

have seen a few reports of defective cables, but more likely a server problem or port problem, try a Google or search the threads as there have been quite a few posts regarding this matter, unfortunately I haven't got any links to hand

yes it is installed. the thing is that I would expect the PC to at least recognize the device and ask for drivers even if the drivers wasn't installed
Try another USB cable(If you can) try another USB port(Just for test)

did that already and even tested the original cable with the Wife's HTC. The cable is fine.
Maybe tried to switch on Another mod not MTP.
Or try to enable USB debugging in Developer options

Hi,
It happened with me too, and there is nothing wrong with the device, its fine.
My friend told me this,
update your Kies software to the latest version, then close the Kies. i mean the kies application should not be running.
Then connect the device and wait for sometime, till the message appears -- MTP connected.
Then open the Kies application, and let the Kies to identify the device.
If it says some error, like device not recognized, then there is an option to debug the connectivity.
Try that option too.
It'll connect surely, but you should be patient.
I think, its the problem with Kies software. I use it only to update the Android firmware. But now, I'm on Custom ROM, so this Kies is no more required for me.
Regards,
Hereticnine.

Lets assume I wanna simply connect it as mass storage. shouldn't the device be idetified ? I mean it's as if the PC OS doesn't recognize it at all
As if it wasn't even attached to the PC.
EDIT: It doesn't recognize the device on debugging mod either

Correct. Even without Samsung USB drivers installed your PC (I guess running Windows) should show a reaction. At least the PC should report an unknown device.
Maybe you should try installing the drivers manually? Not sure if it's gonna help but might as well try, right?
If that doesn't work either maybe you should try contacting the one you got the phone from. Maybe there's something wrong with the particular device.

OK, one last option. Can a Faulty ROM instillation cause the device not to connect to my PC?
Other than that I guess I should get a replacement for my device.
Thanks for your assistance guys
