This question is for developers or anyone with a more than average experience on custom ROMS. So i tried to flash Steves Kernal with ODIN. But, I might've accidently opened the file using notepad instead of 7zip So ODIN said it was complete so i unplugged my player and the only thing i saw was a hazard symbol with a cell phone and a computer on each side. What did I do wrong? Is this a form of brick? *NOTE* I can't really get into recovery OR download mode? Please Help. Thanks.
That phone & computer symbol is download mode. If you plug your SGP into odin while that symbol appears, odin should detect the device.
Opening it in notepad shouldn't make any difference unless you saved it before closing. In that case I'd redownload the kernel and try again. Also, make sure you use the correct slot in odin for the kernel you're flashing (should be PDA, I believe)

I have CWM 3.0.8, and want to get back to the red recovery, so that I can flash a new rom on my fascinate. The problem is, that I can not for the life of me get my phone to show up on Odin. I have tried on two different computers. I have used Odin on both computers for this phone, so the drivers are all installed. Any ideas? The rom I have now is a force close nightmare. I would like to get back to something that is stable.
Thanks for any help,
Brad

Ive used odin before, I just cant get the fascinate to be detected by the computer. It wont even mount the sd card via the usb cable to transfer files. I got the phone in download mode, connected to the computer through the usb cable, but can not get the yellow "added" dialog in odin so that I can flash the .tar file...
Thanks for the help so far,
Brad
Maybe a stupid question but do you have Odin open before you plug the phone in.

You can also try to reinstall drivers or even odin check to see that you have odin 3 1.3 and maybe reinstall odin it can be found here in one of the forums.
I have tried it both ways, going into download mode, then opening odin, and first opening odin, then going into download mode.
Now, I have another problem. I was able to do a data wipe, which stopped the force close loop. I was then able to get my phone workable at least. Then, while resetting everything, I dropped it on my coffee table and the touch screen will not respond. The phone's soft keys work fine and i can turn it on, but have to do a battery pull to turn it off. I have tried turning off/rebooting, and again doing a data wipe. I don't know what else to do other than take it in, but I don't think that is possible since it is rooted
Hi Everyone,
Need help with my I9100 which doesn't boot. I got this phone yesterday and was using it fine. Today i installed Kies and it prompted to upgrade firmware. I researched and found that it had improvements in battery life and decided to go for it. It downloaded the firmware and everything went fine until it prompted saying firmware upgrade failed and asked me to do firmware emergency recovery.
I googled to see more info regarding this error and couldnt get much information. Decided to go ahead with recovery as instructed. Again i got error " Firmware emergency recovery stopped due to GT-I9199 error". If the problem persistes please contact samsung service center.
Please suggest if this is recoverable error and any links to proceed and have a working phone.
Currently when i power on, i get a logo of phone connected to PC with yellow bang in middle. Any pointers much appreciated....
Thanks.
Don't worry, I think you can fix this yourself using ODIN. I mean, flash a custom rom through Download mode. (Turn the phone off, hold Volume Down + Home + Power for 4 seconds)
In this mode you can flash any kind of rom without doing your phone any harm. Just go to the Rom Development forum and choose your rom. I suggest Lightning Rom, because it uses ODIN, and has a very well-explained tutorial.
You can also flash a stock rom, you can get it from the Stock Rom thread, and flash that through ODIN.
Or get it fixed by Samsung and wait two weeks. (where they use exactly the same program, ODIN, to reflash the stock rom)
Look here
And here
And finally here
If all that doesn't work, take it back to samsung.
Also, KIES is a PoS, use Odin in future
Yep, KIES may look all official and reliable, but it actually seems to brick some SGS2's.
Thanks for the info's. Will try them and update soon.
No luck. I tried multiple times to update ROM using ODIN in download mode. Everytime it says NAND write operation failed and comes out. I am searching to see if any other option left before i take it back to samsung
Don't forget to try it with a different computer. Sometimes it's not the phone, it's the PC or the USB port.
Also, you can try flashing with Heimdall instead of Odin.
First of all;
Yellow triangle means you are running custom kernel/rom.
Press home+volume down and then power, to get into download mode , on your phone. If that works, take battery out, to stop it.
Go to:
Samfirmware.com
Download firmware from there. It is a rar file, I think. Open rar file to see what is in. 5 files? The biggest file has all of the other files in it.
Install via Odin. Select pda in Odin and select the biggest file from the rar.
Put your phone into download mode, connect usb and run Odin.
Adrian.
SGS2 I9100
Lite'nin rom 3.2
Make sure that all kies processes are closed or odin will fail.

You can buy a usb jig, specially designed to put you phone into download mode. Search for it on ebay. Take the battery out, plug in usb jig, replace battery and it should boot into download mode. If it does not, then the phone is dead.

Not sure if this is the right place for this question.
I attempted to root my Galaxy S2. I downloaded Odin, a zimage file, superoneclick.
I ran Odin, flashed the zimage file. But then superoneclick refused to work so decided to not continue with the root.
However the phone has all sorts of issues. One being Kies refuses to work now
Whenever I plug in a USB cable and try and run Kies it says its not supported connection type.(i noticed since i tried to root, the phone doesn't go into Kies mode when on the home screen)
I've done a factory restore on the phone by pressing volume up, home and power and restored it all. But the problem still occurs.
I've tried to update the firmware but I cannot find it anywhere.
I'm on Virgin UK and there isn't anywhere a stock file.
Edit:
Whenever the phone switches on theres an exclamation mark warning sign on the bootlogo
Can I please have some help undoing what i've done? I just want the phone back to how it was
What zimage file? You're supposed to flash the cf-root kernel, and that's it.
RESOLVED.
I ensured Kies wasn't running. Then opened ODIN and used an Original PDA file(in my case XWKF3, can be found by dialling *#1234# on the phone), then restarting the phone in download mode, volume down + home + power. Flashed the new zImage for the original file. Everything now works perfectly!

Hope this helps anyone who gets into the same position as me
First time poster, long time lurker.
After spending over 2 weeks reading thread after thread I'm more confused then when I first started !
Using CM7nightly#105, CWM installed as recovery (not sure if as a kernel as well or not ) I decided to use the fantastic SiyahKernal.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263838
I Set the govner to ### and then within CM7 settings I set the CPU OC upto 1600MHz, UC downto 100MHz
Once I turned the phone off and back on again, I am no longer able to get into recovery mode. Turning on normal I get the "Samsung GalaxyS2" logo with the Warning Triangle showing that I have broken warenty, but it freezes and same goes for having the phone off and plugging it into a power source (USB or AC) it just freezes and nothing happens.
BUT I am able to get into download mode, so I'm taking that as a good sign that my phone isn't 100% bricked.
Odin isn't reconizing it, and nether is Windows7 AT ALL ! (most likly an unrelated issue)
I'm so stuck on idea's rite now, also afraid to send it in for repairs because obviously I have broken the warenty and don't know were that would leed, another problem being that it's also on a plan so I would rather not have to go and buy a new one unless I don't tell them about the finer details. The battery is dead because I thought it would charge in download mode, it didn't.. but it does let me enter download mode when connect to a USB or AC it just comes up with the mesage "Battery Empty can't download" or something similar.
If I have missed a thread with someone else having the same issue please redirect me there, if anyone has ANY hints at all or anything I could to get my phone back into working order I would greatly welcomed and I'm sure there might be a way I could repay you for the effort
Thanks in advanced ! Need anymore questions please ask.
I'm not a 'noob' I have an understanding of the basics and how most of it works regarding flashing like that the SGS2 doesn't need a .PIT file because it's already in EXT4 format so I'm pretty sure it isn't a problem regarding that, I'm thinking it's the bootloader, even the kernel I've used. But I was able to use Heimdall to flash a stock kernel ( yes it does work for the SGS2 ) but nothing had changed.
Sorry for the imporopper spelling.
Charge phone with power off.
Ensure samsung kies is not running whilst using odin. Also check your pc task manager and kill anything to do with Kies.
Ensure the latest drivers are installed, try different usb ports, another pc with drivers installed
If you can manage to get the phone recognised by adb (and you know how to use it) you can flash kernel (including the cwm recovery). I saw a method posted by Hellcat somewhere. It might get your recovery going.

You said your not a noob, but are you vol up + home + power to enter recovery?

Yeah I'm only able to get into download-mode, recovery just does not happen at all.
I'm going to try a different machine now after installing the drivers, there is a VM tut on here I'm going to follow that uses VirtualBox, Heimdall on Ubuntu says it detects my phone so I'm going to try that way.
Charging the phone with the powerd off just gives me the empty battery picture with the loading circle in the middle but of course it just freezes and doesn't do anything.
Now trying the ADB/Odin on a clean machine with the latest drivers.
1) Get the right CF Kernel from the Chainfire kernel thread in the Android Original Development Thread. Extract the zip to get a TAR and extract the TAR to get a z-image file. Also download the corresponding original stock kernel from the Intratech thread in the same section.
2) Flash the TAR in PDA using Odin. Do not click repartition. This lets you boot with with functional Root and CWM.
3) If you want to get rid of the yellow triangle, then load the z-image file into /sdcard. Reboot into download mode and use Odin to flash the stock kernel (again in the PDA without repartition). After that, go to the CWM app, choose flash kernel and locate the zimage and proceed.
FYI: SiyahKernels good, but with CM7 if you are updating between nightlys, reflash the old nightly first to get rid of siyahkernel, update the nightly and then reflash Siyah Kernel again. Long way but theres no workabout.
Also kill kies processes while using Odin
hi
Hey Frequency,
were you able to resolve this?
I faced the same issue. But my problem was the battery got drained(i think)
Hi,
I had recently rooted a stock kernel and had the zimage with me so unable to flash this using odian i used winrar to change this into a zImage.rar file and this rar file i renamed as kernel.tar
I assumed the flash will be fine with Odian so got my phone into bootloader and flashed using Odian this fake tar file
Now my phone screen shows a phone and a computer image and a disconnection arrow connecting them.
I tried to remove battery and get it in Bootloader mode but it dsnt go and instead i get the image again.
Any clue how i fix this?
1) the name is Odin NOT Odian
2) you can't simply rename a file, why did you not compress instead of rename?
3) you soft brick phone so put phone in download mode and reflash the entire firmware
Inviato dal mio GT-I9100 usando Tapatalk
There's a heap of apps in the market that can flash a zImage, no need to do w/e you did there.
Download app, start app, flash zImage directely from the app, done.
The easiest way is sometimes the best
Please help!

I have the exact same issue... I can see a phone a computer image and a disconnection arrow in between. But I got it completely differently, I flashed it with the Stock ROM (using Odin3) in phone mode, instead of PDA mode (since it was failing). I know it was stupid thing to do, but I panicked (maybe flashing/rooting is not for me).
I am still not sure if my phone is soft bricked or hard bricked, but I fear the worse cause I cannot go into recovery mode or the download mode. The only thing which is working out for me is that Odin3 says "Added!!" apart from that the phone just shows a black screen with a phone a computer and a warning sign between them.
Can you guys please please please help me get out of my tricky situation. I promise never to play with flahsing/modding ever again...
