When I first bought the Amaze 4G from Wind Mobile, the store rep told me to put the "Preferred network mode" to "WCDMA only". That was fine until I started realizing that it still goes back to "GSM/WCDMA auto" when I reboot the phone. THIS IS DANGEROUS! You will get roaming charges!

To fix this on Wind network, which will make sure it always use WCDMA on "WIND Home", you need the following:
- Rooted Amaze 4G
- adb or root explorer
In this guide, I will use root explorer. If you do not have this app, you should learn how to use adb instead and save you a few bucks
In root explorer, navigate to /system/ and find "build.prop", make a copy of it in the same directory and to your sd card if you like. Tap on the top right where it says "Mount R/W", then long press the build.prop and select "Open in Text Editor" and look for the line shown in the screenshot below:.
Change the highlighted value to "2" (without quotes) so it looks like the following:
Once that is done, press menu and "Save and Exit" option, you should now see something like this:
Reboot the phone, and go back to the "Preferred network mode" option, switch to "WCDMA only", the setting should now stick even after reboot. if it does not comment below and I will try to help you.
Great tip, my first month with WIND was about 40-50 bucks on top of the regular 30 I pay. I called them, complained (because apparently WIND's reception is so bad sometimes it turns into roaming when there's no reception and ends up charging me) and got the additional fees waived. You can also call them to disable data roaming for your particular account

Humm.. thanks, but I would like to be able to call when I actually need to. So this deemed to be a more optimal option for me sacrificing warranty of course.
But I will for sure know now that I need to pay attention to my bill, I only have this phone and Wind service for 5 days

Might be able to make an update zip, that would be easier? If not, you would just copy the modified prop file and push it using adb, chmod 644? should work just like that, have it backup the current one first though, because I can't find the stock image for Wind Mobile version anywhere.
When you get it to work as bat, feel free to add it to your toolkit

Yes, but if you are in roaming, you will get charged for receiving text messages. If you do this, you are still allowed to switch back to GSM when you like to.

I'm pretty sure I called them to tell them to disable roaming data only for me, which means that roaming calls and texts would still work. Roaming calls are typically 25 cents per minute and roaming texts are typically 15 cents per message sent, so I'm not worried about that at all.
The only thing you really need to be looking out for while roaming is data. If you're caught in an area where WIND has bad reception and decides to say that you're in the "AWAY" zone, roaming data fees will apply! They charge you 10 cents per 25 Kb - that's roughly 4 bucks per megabyte!

Is this just SoCal, or the whole state/country?

Do you think trying a different radio would help? That's a whole reason why I flashed over to stock, because the previous radio leaks were giving me problems.
Looks like it's probably a Verizon network issue. I'm on stock radio FWIW.
I am in the same boat in my location. The 4g icon went off for a while, and all of a sudden its just a 1x icon. I restarted my phone, to no avail.
So far I can receive and place calls, so that's good.

As most are aware both the LTE network and eHPRD are down (a special version of 3G for the Thunderbolt only). To get 3G data back you just need to change your settings back to the normal 3G network. Here are the steps:
Dial ##778# and hit send
A pop-up window named EPST will show up giving you 2 choices: View Mode and Edit Mode. Pick: Edit Mode.
Enter the Password: 000000
Go down to Modem Settings and pick “Rev A“
You’ll want to choose enable and click OK, hit the menu button and then press “Commit Modifications.”
I hope this helps anyone that is left in the dark by this outage.
edit 2 suggested by NDK: one more step guys, if you are on auto cdma/lte settings, you might have to go in to
*#*#4636#*#* and select EVDO only to get 3g.
My thunderbolt worked on auto cdma/lte but this may cause less conflict.

Warning to all Sprint users!
I was using my motorola Photon while roaming on CDMA domestically, which I have done before, when all of a sudden a popup appeared. This wasn't the normal, "beware of possible data charges, continue?" This popup said something like: "You are roaming domestically off of Sprint's wireless network, to continue you must agree to pay the roaming charges"
You are given the choice to agree or cancel and not be able to use data. I have gotten out of it by pressing the home button but it keeps coming back while I'm roaming.
Did sprint change their policy? If so let me know so I can cancel for free, this isn't going to fly.
Hello,
With the Simply Everything Plan, Domestic Roaming is free. The Warning is just a boilerplate warning as not everyone is on the Plan and the Photon does not know which Plan you are on. If on the Simply Everything Plan, just turn off the Warning.
Cheers,
JJ
As an ex-Sprint employee I know this, but this popup was different than the one I normally receive on the Photon and specifically said Sprint. It also said I WILL be charged.
So instead of assuming, did you call sprint to verify?

I have called about this before and was told I can use up to 300mb of data while roaming, anything after that I would get charged.

I was told the same thing when I signed up for Sprint Service earlier today... I spend a day or so in a fringe area that roams 3G on Verizon, and was told if I go over 300 MB data, or half of my voice minutes on another domestic network, that I could get charged, or booted off.

As a current Sprint employee, I can say roaming is free for both voice and data. Every smartphone I carry at my location has that "generic" warning message. I've been answering that question for over 4 years now. One thing to note though, Sprint does has excessive usage where they can terminate your contract at will. I believe there was bond XDAer who accumulated something like 93GB in a 3 month time period and politely asked to leave Sprint. If you have further questions, call 1-877-775-4886 instead of *2 or 1-800-SPRINT1.

300mb or a majority of data use. If you use 2gb in a month and you roam at or under 1gb for said month then you will not be charged. This us covered in the TOS and can be found verbatim on their website.
Just saying.

Some people just dont really read anymore, nor have common sense, I mean really, you think any carrier would happily let you roam constantly??? If your phone gets a bad signal, call them and (politely) talk to them and see what they can do, if that doesn't solve the issue, go for an airvana, doesn't cost you a dime, if your still not happy, cancel your contract, sprint didn't force you to sign the dotted line, you made that decision....done with my rant for the night

Yes but sense we are all used to roaming constantly, due to Sprint's limited network, and it has always been free. And as you see from a current employee above; we are still being told it is free, it is just ridiculous.
Anyway, not here to ***** about Sprint, just warning those who torrent all the time.

Once again, the spreading of more mis-information...
Since no one takes the time to read the Data roaming agreement portion of your subscriber agreement I'll quote it for you all so that you may all 'know it all' ... In case anyone cares to read it, you can find the entire agreement here
Off-network Roaming: The primary use of your Device must be for domestic purposes within the Sprint-owned network. Domestic means use in the 50 United States and U.S. Territories (except Guam). Sprint reserves the right, without notice, to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if off-network usage in a month exceeds: (1) voice: 800 min. or a majority of minutes; or (2) data: 300 megabytes or a majority of kilobytes...

So, if you use a total of 2gigs in a month and you use 1gig or less while roaming, they won't care because you are still under the 'majority of kilobytes' clause.. therefore, no charges, no pissy letters, no phone call... nada.
In fact, I'll post up a screenshot where my wife and I consumed roaming data like you wouldn't believe and they didn't care.
On a side note.. if anyone uses their cellular data connection for downloading torrents they are an idiot... my data consumption was streaming internet radio while force roaming just to test the 'majority of kilobytes' theory.. they didn't give a ****...
proof is in the pic... now can we please stop beating this horse ?

That's EXACTLY why that Guy with 93Gb in a month got the boot!! For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone would use a phone to download torrents, just can't. And if you READ the contract, (I did down to the fine print), unlimited data has limitations. Torrents were not specifically mentioned, but using Photon as a Server is, and I assume this falls under that.

Glad they booted him.. it's that kinda **** that makes carriers switch to capped or tiered data.. that **** only hurts us all in the long run if it continues..
I stream internet radio while at work all day. Mine is 'normal' usage.. not for torrents and crap.. anyhow.. I just wanted to point out that it's not a fixed 300mb 'cap'... it's 300mb OR a majority of data.... funny how ppl just can't read.
FFS if you are that guy torrenting/hotspotting all your ****, you're an asshole.
There was a guy on reddit a month or two ago complaining that Sprint terminated his unlimited data plan. Come to find out, his previous month's data usage exceeded 100gb because he was using his wifi hotspot (from rooting) for all his internet purposes.

I know its cumbersome, but until we have roms with custom toggles in the notification bar pulldown, go to settings > wireless and networks > mobile networks > uncheck data enabled.
I don't have a note, but this has been the same on both my infuse and captivate. Should be the same or similar for the note. Yeah its cumbersome, but it works.
Also, if you stay connected to the same wifi, it shouldn't use data anyways, but I suppose this way makes sure.

If you arent in an LTE supported area you have no worries. ATTs network isnt like verizons where the phone will constantly be looking for LTE. If you are in an LTE area and just dont want to use it you will have to alter APN settings to one that only uses H+. You should be able to use the same settings from an H+ only phone.

Verizon doesn't search for LTE constantly if you aren't in an LTE area.
1. If you cannot get into HBOOT or recovery, go in settings, battery and turn off fast boot.
2. If you need data and voice at the same time, go settings, mobile data and change the network to CDMA/LTE.
3. If you need SmartSync disabled, there is an app in the market for that (SmartSync Disabler). If you don't know what SmartSync is, you don't need the app. LOL

Wow, I just realized you're in Edison lol. That's 20 minutes away from me - I'm in Holmdel and yeah, there aren't really any 3g areas around here.. just the occasional (very random) 3g for s few seconds then back to 4g..

Live in Sussex...work in Newark...yeah no 3G anywhere for you guys...I'm still bathed in up here..lol
The demo unit at the Rockaway Mall is live...I'll stop by and change that setting and see if it does. It DID NOT work when I tried it on Wednesday but I am assuming it was set to global mode. It probably won't work but I'm passing by there today anyway.

From what I have been told, it only works on 4G, but I don't have any 3G areas around me to test it.

Switching to CDMA/LTE won't enable SVDO.
The MDM9615 in its current configuration doesn't support SVDO and this can be seen in another phone (iPhone 5).
If you want to look at the technical reasons (for iPhone 5 as an example), HTC probably did it to keep the phone so slim and less of a brick.

Will need to look at the FCC docs to be 100% sure on the capability of SVDO and this device.
It's not about the MDM9615 chip config, its about the lack of transmissions and such that limited the iP5, as svdo requires multiple paths.
I'd be surprised if its not supported here on this device for VZ to be honest... The reason iP5 lacks it was merely bc they wanted to cover more LTE bands with one device as opposed to many devices...
This being on VZ I'd think it'd be implemented....less they made other decisions for some reason...need look over FCC doc to see.
In the end looks like a solid device you guys have regardless!

That was what I was referring to regarding config and the 9615 and using different paths, which, according to the Anandtech article, adds thickness and weight. I figured the paths were directly related to the 9615.
My bad.

If you don't want to turn off fast boot. You can hold power button and restart. When you see the screen off(no backlight) then hold volume down button. You'll get it.

No worries.
Yeah it would add weight and such if apple wanted to keep the current antenna design and add the path ontop of it, is the way I look at it.
If I get time ill look around and see on the DNA bc ill be stunned if it doesn't support it.... That is less HTC went to a diff antennae design somewhat themselves too...which is possible.

The program WiFi Tether for Root Users works for those that are rooted with these settings:
Change the Device-Profile to HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM)
Change Setup-Method to Netd-Ndc (master)
Add encryption, change passphrase, and change SSID as needed.

It works fine as generic with the routing fix too.

Showing that I was on 3G:
Hey people I understand sprints network is unlimited etc.... but me and the other person on my line are rooted and we tether he used probably near 15-20gb i used probably about 5 and ever since the 30th of december my 4g connection has been unreliable to the point where i have to turn on 3g to use the internet or it will just hang at loading the website or the app i even did a speedtest with other people that have sprint in my area they easily get over 10mbps while i cant even get 1mbps unless i throw 3g on..... my question is can i do anything about this? we both have sprint note 3s stock rooted i checked the towers in my area all are good! I called sprint they made me do a network reset etc update profile and prl nothing changed! please help
Could be defective but I don't think you're being throttled. Try taking the battery out for a few minutes.

My wife and I are with Sprint as well and we both strongly believe that Sprint throttles 4g LTE at 5 gb download. Every month when I hit 5 gb I can't connect to 4g until the next billing cycle. We are going to see how Spark is this year and if it's as piss poor as the current 4g we are jumping over to AT&T.

Sprint has to be throttling I know my device is not defective it just so happens it's happening to both lines on my account we both used a decent amount of data I wonder if there is some sort of work around

Agreed. If you aren't in a roaming area, they shouldn't be throttling you. Make sure that you update your PRL and profile, reboot, then call them. There are a lot of factors, including times of day, towers from which you're pulling, &c. They know this info, so I suggest that have your facts before calling.

No throttling. 5gb isn't anything. I've used close to 100gb with no problems. For years I've easily gone over that 5gb mark. Someone here in another thread used almost 200gb. Just sounds like tower overload. New customers around Christmas time makes sense. Sprint should be able to see that.
Edit: For anyone that wants to see the unthrottled usage lol http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2592679&page=4
I'm having a similar issue. Will have to keep a close eye on it. I thought it was just my phone or the towers acting funny

Ya if data is not fast enough to stream some video in an area with lte coverage I would call and see whats up. Or go take your phone to another of the same model and compare signal strength. You can go into testing settings and make sure both are on same tower and see actual signal dBm.

Yes that is sprint lte at its best I love this phone/service. I cant see me needing spark untill phones have 4k displays and 4k video out. Maybe for really congested/populated cities its needed. wimax never made it here and lte is pretty new for us too, spark is probably years away for me anyways.
