So I had been enjoying my GameStop preordered prime all day yesterday and half of today. This afternoon I go to turn it on and nothing. No display whatsoever.
It appears to be a display issue as I can plug in the USB cable to my computer and it will mount the storage. I tried using the reset button on the side and nothing. Held down the power button for about 10 seconds and the unit buzzes, the storage is temporarily dismounted, and then it remounts, but no screen.
Not only am I bummed, my wife who bought it for me as a birthday/Christmas present feels bad because she knows how much I was looking forward to it.
Anyone else having any troubles with their units? Anyone have any suggestions? I haven't tried a hard reset yet, but I'm very doubtful it will work.

Wow. That sucks. Sorry to hear that. I had an oh **** moment earlier today, I hooked my prime up to my desktop for the first time to move a movie, and the USB plug sparked going into my motherboard and my comp rebooted. And the other end was attached to my prime. This happened to coincide with moving a file over wifi to NAND which brings the prime to a halt. So I thought I had toasted the thing.

Follow Up-Called Asus Tech Support
So I called Asus tech support and as disappointed as I am, the support call was at decent experience. I was told it would take 10-14 business days for the techs to take a look at it. Of course, I have to foot the bill to get it there, but that is fairly common nowadays. The phone operator was decent enough to expedite my RMA though as he could hear the disappointment in my voice. With an expedite, he said that as soon as it is received in shipping, it will be looked at immediately.
Also, not that this is a surprise to anyone at this point, and as I write this, I guess I'm sort of glad this happened. I was definitely noticing wi-fi issues. As I mentioned in my first post, I had a GameStop pre-order and therefore I likely had one of the units with the wi-fi problem. I thankfully remembered to mention the wi-fi issues in the RMA call, so they will be looking at that as well.
I also mentioned to the operator that since I had ordered this through GameStop, there were some preloaded games that GameStop had put on the unit. He said that he would make a note telling the techs to call if they needed to wipe the system for any reason, otherwise they would send it back with everything intact.
Has anyone found out how we can backup or restore the GameStop bundle if we do need to do a wipe? How about updates for those preinstalled games? I didn't get a chance to see if they were being recognized by the Android Market.
Don't know if this might help but check to see if your volume button is stuck in the up position. The buzzing you get and remount sounds like the prime is going into APX mode. I was able to get into APX mode with my prime by holding the VOL up and restart the prime. I get the same thing as you but I'm able to just hold the power button and it reboots normally

I agree! Why wouldn't you ask for a NEW one??! I wouldn't tolerate getting it "fixed"
Guys, educate me here.
Isn't easier to get a replacement from Best Buy, Amazon, etc?
Why calling Asus after just few days buying it?
If it happens to me I will be heading to the store where I bought it for an exchange or refund.
I could not sleep knowing I paid for a brand new unit that has to be opened and repaired. Just sayin...
Mines shut down for no reason as well. It was unresponsive for a while and I finally got it started after pressing power and the volume up button. Then a few hours later it shut down again, for no reason. Erg is going on

sold my prime today on CL for what I paid for it. keeping the $99 HP touch pad I bought just to hold me over, turns out to be alot better IMO. snappy CPU, powerful gpu andreno 250.
it currently has more game support aswell and runs them well. also has a great community on xda.
I would not accept anything less than a replacement. Amazon is replacing mine for some pixel/backlight problems.

Yes it may have all that you mentioned but it won't have ICE CREAM!
ICE CREAM!!!! ICE CREAM!!! The ice cream man is coming!!!
I've got some ice cream, I've got some ice cream. You didn't get none, you didn't get none, cause your tablets on welfare, your tablets on welfare. You can't afford it, you can't afford it. You want some? Psych!!! (Immortal words of --- Eddie Murphy)
RE: Sad Day.
Believe you me, I'm just about to head to bed and I'm waking up tomorrow morning without the ability to take video of my kids opening presents as I had planned with the Prime. Granted I have other means of doing so, but I was excited to do so on the tablet and I've been chomping at the bit for this unit since I first heard about it.
I'm VERY disappointed that I'm out the tablet after only 1 1/2 days. I'm soooo bummed! The reason I called Asus tech and started the RMA process was due to the fact that I figured I didn't have much of a choice. It's either have this unit fixed and wait 10-14 Business days, or get GameStop to order a replacement and wait 4-7 weeks. I did ask if I would still have the 1 year warranty and the operator said I would. (I asked because I know some companies say tough luck after the first repair. I would have been climbing the walls if Asus said tough luck!) I admit, I'm a bit of a "satisfaction now" kind of person-I simply figured that 10-14 Business days was my fastest option to having the tablet back in hand.
Unknown_owner, thanks for the tip. I'll check the volume button.
Skeptikal, Did GameStop give you any kind of ETA? Or were you simply willing to wait no matter how long it takes?
BiGMERF, I see it is working again as you sent your message from your Prime. Where did you get your tablet? Has it happened again?
Thanks all! At least there is some "therapy" in talking about the experience with XDA members
You just bought the thing. Now it doesn't work after a day. Don't mess around with RMA. Go to GameStop, return the unit, and either they can provide you an exchange right then, or get a complete refund. If they hassle you, file a dispute with your credit card provider. Then go buy from some place else.
Better yet, let your wife do the returns. Women are just naturally better at getting their way. Bonus points if she's the in-your-face type. Be sure to get the manager of the store to join the party.
Remember: It's your Xmas present. You're not going to let anybody ruin your Xmas. Attitude counts. And lots of spittle.
Sorry to hear. Have a good Xmas! My prime has no issues yet so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

No, sorry. I didn't even get into that with them on the phone. I am banking on software fixing the GPS issue. If not I will explore the possibilities then. Really sorry yours isn't working as it should. I hope it gets worked out quickly in your favor!

That really bites I'd be so pissed! I would demand a new one not just a fix. Mine takes a while to boot with some screen flickers in the process. I better not have the same issue coming on. What a way to ruin your mas. I'm so sorry. But being only two days I'd get a new one not a fix. After a month yeah a fix would be warranted but not two days.
Dead Prime
Yup, mine's dead as well. I got it today, used it for a couple of hours and went out, leaving it to charge. Got home, restarted at 100% battery and now it's dead. Thanks ASUS, real glad I took and chance on your tablet! Very impressed...
The best way to see if your Prime is dead (speaking to everyone with this problem) is holding just the power button down for at least 20 seconds. And also, plug it in. If you have an orange or a green light, that is a good thing.
I wanted this tablet so bad but it looks like I've finally made the decision to wait for the next powerful tablet. I've never seen so many MAJOR problems with a tablet release. Asus really took a dump with this one. So much so that I will never purchase anything from them until it is confirmed to be working as it should. I'm a realist and I understand that most electronics are not perfect during the first couple of weeks after a release but the problems I see multiple people reporting are getting out of hand. This device is beyond having a bug here and there. Asus should have done themselves a favor and not rushed this thing into the hands of so many unsuspecting consumers. I really do feel sorry for some of you as Asus clearly ripped you off. They should give everyone their money back and pull all shipments.
If you could go back and do it all over again, would you have purchased this tablet?

I'm one of the few who has a completely bricked tablet as a result of the ICS update. If I knew then what I know now...
I would still buy it in a heartbeat.
This tablet is absolutely amazing. I had it for 4 days in working order, never had an issue with wifi strength, bluetooth, or even GPS lock. The only problem I've had is that the OTA to ICS "didn't take," for whatever reason, and now I'm stuck with a boot-looping paperweight.
But these things happen. I'm not in a rush to return it. I'm not even in a rush to RMA it. I'm sure that ASUS will come up with a fix in due time, probably something I can push over USB. If not, I'll RMA it.
The thing is thin, fast, and beautiful. There's an even more beautiful one coming out in Q2? Great, I'll buy that too, and then my girlfriend can have the shiny new (to her) TF201 she's already been drooling over. =)
Had mine since Dec. 23rd, wifi works same as my phone (what I would consider working), GPS only works outside (don't really need it), but I'm more than happy with it and plan on keeping it until I want to sell it for the next one.
Edit: So to answer the question yes I would do it over again.

I think you're talking about the TF700T. That tablet looks ugly IMO, sure it will have better reception than the current TFP, but TFP look sleek with it's metal housing and from the looks of the TF700T won't likely carry the Transformer Prime name with ASUS still in legal dispute over the 'Transformer' name with HASBRO.
TF201 is going to be one rare sought out tablet, once the supply of this drys up, and ASUS only release the TF700T instead.
Imagine that, the only metal designed tablet.
(yes this is ignoring all the faults that we know a metal cased tablet brings, but still. )
Time may prove me wrong on this, but I have a feeling that the backplate shown at CES will not be the final version, and was merely a concept rushed out for the show, as if to say "see? Plastic!"
And we'll see about the Prime name. At this point they could call it the Eee Bieber and I'd still buy it.
On second thought, let's not get carried away...
I've had it for 2 1/2 weeks now and am still within my return period (1 month). Even with annoying WiFI issues, I'm still keeping it, so yes, I would obviously buy it again.
With that said, the main reason I'm keeping it is b/c there's currently nothing comparable available and I want a tablet now. I certainly won't be buying any products from Asus ever again in the future.
I am very curious about this. I have more and more problems appearing with my Prime and wanted to hold off repairing it until after my trip. But I don't think this will happen.
So the question remains, How long did it take your Prime to come back to you after repairs? Also Include, what was wrong with it.
My current problems are as follows:
1. GPS (like everyone else)
2. Wifi / BT (like most people)
3. Rear Camera - (view finder has artifacts and pictures only save as solid green images.)
4. Battery - My device would sometimes read the stats on the battery and give me a percent. Other times it would suddenly show 0% but still continue to be powered on. And now it always shows 0% but no longer stays powered on since the battery is now drained. The battery no longer charges since it always says 0%. I can not update my firmware since my battery isn't above 15%.
EDIT: Battery does hold a charge, but still shows 0%. Therefore, no firmware updates for me for now. I'm guessing the battery sensor became damaged somehow.
They've had mine for more than 3 weeks now and the status is still "Waiting-[WB5] Wait for Repair\Test\Aging". I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever see it again.
The problem I was having with mine was that it claimed it was docked and acted like it was docked (as the screen orientation wouldn't change and the battery would charge like there was a dock attached) even though I don't even own the dock.

That is the fear I have that I will be without a tablet for awhile. Makes you want to buy another tablet to fill that void. Go back to a laptop?? no way!
Got my RMA tonight and shipping it out tomorrow. Wish it luck!
It took 24 calender days or 16 business days for me. ASUS sat on my original Prime for about 5 business days and then decided the repair would take too long. They shipped me a new C1.
On the new unit: WIFI is satisfactory (still dropping off past 30 feet); light bleed and dead pixels are gone (perfect screen) and the GPS is worse than the first one. I'll eventually call ASUS again about the GPS - but I'm sick of them and they're sick of me for now.
Remember to always escalate your calls to the supervisor. The front line people give bad information and don't have permission to see all the case notes. It seems that my case was escalated after 7 business days - ask for that too. And when it gets close to 10 business days - ask for your case to be escalated to head office. In the end, my new prime came from California. (I'm in the Great White North).
Cheers.

Thanks for the tips. I will keep them in mind. Back to using my good old Captivate. I will keep everyone updated. Should be arriving at Asus tomorrow.
They tell you that they have 10-14 business days to repair your unit. And that is after they check it in.
Mine arrived on a friday at 10am, they didn't check it in until the following Tuesday.
I called and followed up on a regular basis. I was in waiting until the 14th day when the status switched to ready for shipping.
After all that, they simply sent a new one from California. I am supposed to be getting it today. I shipped it out on 1/17.
So follow up on a regulat basis, and be patient. It will be awhile.

Update: Today I received a phone call stating that my unit was sent to the wrong facility. So it is now being sent from CA to TX. Then when it is received there it is a 10-14 day turnaround. Thanks for telling me the wrong address.
I'm a little frustrated.
This is for the OP
Now that you have made the hard decision to part with your Prime, and I knoow how difficult that can be especially with an unknown return date. Here is a shameless double post I wrote in another thread about RMA, my experience and a pep talk about staying all over Asus Support until it's on it's way back. If you sit back and wait, it will ikely be a long one. Fortunately for me I had a high level Support Manager before the RMA began. It helps. A Lot.
Though most of us are seriously afraid and unwilling to go the RMA route, it is a viable option. You just need to do it in a way that decreases the odds of getting screwed around. If you look for the RMA thread here on XDA, there are multiple horror stories of tablets sitting, not checked in, for days, in "test" or "waiting for parts for a week or more etc. That reeks of a) SMS is not a good repair center, and b) SMS is overwhelmed with a large number or Prime tablets, thus creating slow turn arounds, and multiple cases "falling through the cracks" How do you avoid this, or as I said, decrease the chances of becoming one of the casualties? Well, like anything else a bit of research goes a long way. Knowledge is power. What I did was, get Gary Key's email (you can send him an email from the first 3 stickies in the Prime General threads, then just note the address (think it's [email protected]) Get EVERY email address of the ASUS support personnel that you can find. BEFORE you send you tablet anywhere, use Asus escalation mailbox, and sned a note, cc everyone on the list, and explain your position. Be diplomatic, but make your displeasure known, in plain terms.
Explain that you do not want to be without the tablet for anything more than a few days, and see what they are willing to offer going in.
Step two, once you RMA the unit, start bothering them for it's return IMMEDIATELY, if not sooner. They offered to overnight mine into the repair center, and by noon the next day when it showed as "not yet received" even though I had a delivery confirmation and the name of who signed, I went right for the jugular: "Problems already" was my subject line or something like that, LOL!
Stay on their case, THEY KNOW that the percentage of broken Prime is too high, and they are TRYING to be proactive about it. You just can't be all "Oh well, they have my unit.. they will fix it I am sure, I hope it doesn't take TOO long", LOL! Multiple guys in the RMA thread were saying stuff like: Well, Gary is trying to help, I don't want to piss him off" ???? Why not? You are 100% entitle to piss off any and everyone you want to until you are satisfied with your purchase.
Other guys were saying: "I was told they would call me in 48 hours... If they don't I will call again..." Bull ****ing ****!!!!! You call them daily, hourly... CONSTANTLY until you are given what you need.
My RMA was back in my hands on the 5th day from sending it in. A brand spanking new prime, opened and tested. Is it perfect? Pretty close. In fact, it is as perfect as I think this design is capable of. Sent it Monday. Had new Prime in my hands Friday morning. You should expect, nay DEMAND the exact same thing. And you know what? If you do, you will get it. I promise you that. Just don't lie down and be a sheep, waiting to see what Asus is gonna do. Asus is going to do the absolute least that they can get away with. That's the point. Just don't let them get away with it, otherwise you are a willing victim.
There. Pep talk over... Rant over (for a bit) The Prime must be one of the most polarizing bit of new tech to roll in the last year, for sure.
Wow, that was a petulant post. Wah wah.
I live near the facility that Asus uses for these repairs. I just dropped mine off minutes ago and pretty sure it was a manager type that took it out of my hands. Fyi, this company does repair work for more than Asus. So they may very well be busy as hell. It was a nice looking facility. Anyway, I will update this post when I get it back. Until then....

Of course they will do as little as they can get away with. Asus has to pay SMS Infocomm to repair their products. None of this is free for them. Which is why they should be learning the lesson of releasing a more finished product. However, I would love to know what Asus tells SMS about fixing these, i.e. emails or meetings.
Update: No update from the repair center.. But, on Friday, Gary did message me back saying he would try and get this figured out for me. ASUS website still doesn't show it being received so I will probably give them a good call later today after work.
It took mine 2 weeks, and they just replaced it.
Update: I was emailed yesterday telling me either they will send a replacement or just give me a full refund for whatever I paid for the device. Today, I had the official email telling me that the easiest thing to do at this time was to give me a full refund and that they would be sending me a check within 5 days. I guess it's good because I paid $600 for the 16GB version so I guess now I can just get the 64GB version with my refund.
So it took 3 weeks, to give me a result.
I know I probably shouldn't bother posting as its probably similar to a number of other threads that have been around recently but I really had to share my experiences since I got my prime back from RMA.
I had a number of problems with the prime originally and I was regretting my purchase with a number of problems but was happy to give them a chance to RMA.
After receiving it back there where a couple of things which I spoke to them about and got resolved, I then updated it with the .21 software, since then, its been like a breathe of fresh air.
- I got splashtop working to my home pc and was running microsoft word/excel on the prime as it was native. Was absolutely excellent and ran perfectly
- Downloaded some games from the play store, and had such a nice experience as well as awesome graphics
- Played a few snes games through the HD cable to the TV using an xbox 360 controller, absolutely awesome again, a portable console for sure
- Got the beta of tapatalk 2 which runs so well on the prime which has let me go through all of the forums I normally use a PC for - definitely worth a purchase when its fully released.
- Internet browing using the STOCK browser has been fantastic, a couple of pauses but not enough to bother me, preferred it over dolphin and chrome as well
Summarised up, it has been probably the best thing i've used for the last few years, and I think with the new .21 software it is a now an excellent device.
Anyone thinking of buying but are worried about software, IMO can relax and go for it.
Sorry if you guys are all sick of hearing all this kind of stuff, but I was one that had problems and since RMA and update they have been completely resolved and I couldn't recommend it more now - and that includes people that I would only recommend ipad too before.
P.s. I recommend getting google cloud print set up, then download a program called Cloud Print for the prime. Can print perfectly from the prime

Out of curiosity, what were the issues resolved by the RMA? And, what are the first 5 digits of the serial number?
Issues I had where:
Light bleed,
Faulty Keyboard,
Non Existent GPS (still around, but will be happy once I get a dongle)
WIFI was weak
Lots of crashing.
.21 software fixed the crashing and my wifi seems pretty good now (better than my desire hd), they replaced keyboard and the screen is bleed free.
My serial number starts: BC0KA and was purchased on 6th Jan in UK.

RMA Issues
Hello,
I recently found out that my transformer prime had a soft spot on the back shell and it was causing creaking, I also have a dead pixel on the front.
I want to return it, but there were a few problems.
-The RMA number was recieved on March 14th, today is April 9th, and I'm not sure if its too late to send it
-I accidentally unlocked the device after rooting it, and I tried to factory reset and now I'm stuck in clockwork recovery mod and I can't get out
-I am not sure if this is still fixable
I'm not sure if this is the right thread to go to, but I really really need some help.
They have to receive it within 30 days of the RMA issue date.

Unlocked bootloader=no warranty. Sorry to break it to you, but even if you get your prime to Asus your RMA will most likely be DOA. The only avenue I can suggest is emailing Asus and pleading your case.

Hello,
I recently found out that my transformer prime had a soft spot on the back shell and it was causing creaking, I also have a dead pixel on the front.

How do you accidentally unlock. That doesn't sound legit. There are massive warnings when unlocking. It would be impossible to do so. Sounds like you acted before you thought fully about it, and are now having unlocking remorse and are trying to cook up some story.

I just recently did a RMA, had the green camera issue, couldnt wait til classes were over as I needed it for some etextbooks but i wanted it fixed asap.
called the asus number for rma, was quick and simple and easy. they sent me a fedex rma thing where it was prepaid.
i noticed a lot of people had to pay to ship it back, but it wasnt the case for me as they paid for shipping it back to them.
I was wondering for those that had to send it back for rma, did you all had to pay to ship it to asus? weird.

They just sent me an email with a checklist of things to send to them and the address.
Not with me they asked me to box it up myself but they paid fully for shipping and handling costs both ways including arranging pick up from a location of my choice.

I did mine through FedEx, for them to box it and ship standard was $30, ASUS didn't offer to pay 1 cent. Since they fixed a problem under warranty I'm going to raise hell for my $30 back. Being as they fixed a "warranty" issue they are basically admitting there was a manufacturing fault with the unit which makes it their responsiblity. I'm not doing anything until I get my unit back and make sure it all works right first
Just sent in my prime for repair of the back cam and a few other minor issues on June 1. Today (June 6) the service place contacted me with a message that the device was repaired and will be shipped back soon. This really surprised me considering the horror stories of broken tabs and really long RMA times. So maybe now that the onslaught of tabs being sent to RMA is over they are a little more efficient. It hasn't shipped yet so hopefully it does within the week, and comes back all nice and fixed. Just thought I'd let you guys know.
I'm Just waiting for the typical "Cool Story Bro!" comments.
UPDATE: They shipped it on June 7 and the tracking info says its due in Monday, ill let you guys know it it is fixed and in good condition when I receive it.
UPDATE:Just got the tablet today, 100% fixed, absolutely no scratches, and nice packaging. I'm super happy, now to get back to rooting and playing around with this thing, I missed not having it even though it was only a week and a half or so.
yeah I sent mine in 2nd week into may for a digital crack in the screen (very VERY weird) and minor things i figured they could tweek, wifi, gps, small light bleeds, bt audio being out of sync with videos. It took 2 weeks and the only issue I've had is that they were trying to send it to my home address (which i have no idea how they got in the first place) and when i told them to send it to my OFFICE they sent it to my DAMN HOME with a NOTE INSIDE saying to send it to my office >_> stupid CS reps.... so i spent 3 days chasing fedex around but for the most part RMA wasn't as painful as the stories have been told. And I have a nice fresh screen (they coulda did a better job packaging it up instead of literally looking like they jus threw this plastic on top)

I am about to send mine in tomorrow or friday. I took 20 something pictures... so sad to have to send her off for a while.
I hope to add positive results in a few weeks.

My experience was pretty positive as well; it took only a couple of weeks to send the device in and get it back (with shipping both ways paid for). On the other hand, I suspect my problem was pretty minor (dock wouldn't work with tablet).
my experience with Asus is very good, buy not this time, I've sent my prime 6 weeks back, because the camera didn't work, I still don't know if they've fixed it or not

That sounds about right based on the majority of RMA stories here on XDA. It may be a small segment from Asus, but I'm certain they've lost a few customers forever as a result of the way they've handled many aspects of the Prime. I certainly will never be buying another Asus product again (which is a shame, since it sounds like the first Nexus tablet will be Asus).
