Well i got a second hand S2 and i would like to "clean" it and install a better rom and a better firmware as the battery life is very short about 17 hours.
My problem is idk which one is better for my device. Should i stay on Giner or pass to ICS?

Flashed
ROM - XWLA4_CheckromRevo_HD_V6 (Most votes on a pool thread)
KERNEL - DarkKnight_2.5.2 (found it on checkrom page, i could not find a pool for kernels.. )
any advices for a good kernel?
battery life still poor
Few days ago i managed to get a 25% (as can be seen on Old Results attachment) display usage but suddenly has raised to over 45% and no matters what... it wont go below that level.
You can have a try of Siyah's Kernel.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263838
I would suggest to go with a good ICS rom.
I am currently using Hydrogen ICS + latest Siyah kernel and absolutely recommend this setup

well if you are getting 45% for display you must be using your phone or your display is turned on alot.. download betterbatterystats_xda_edition here on XDA .. its free (just search) and check your kernel Wake_Locks
also CPU spy from market to check is your phone going into deep sleep

ATM is off charging i want to full charge it and after that try a new flash
Is what i would do .
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware wipe phone totally .
Backup EFS first Nitrality is a market app for such .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
no recovery install cwm kernel
Root + CWM .

in recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Phone is now empty no OS no nothing .
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware GB
Though at this point you could flash a ICS stock if so desired

FWIW, 17 hours is not bad, depending on what you're doing.
If you are actively using the phone with a screen on time of at least a few hours, with full sync going, that's actually pretty good.
If this is pure stand-by time (you're not touching the phone at all) it's on the mediocre side, but still not terrible if you have full sync going.
I can get 24+ hours if I hardly use the phone at all, or about 6-7 hours if I'm constantly using it for web surfing, facebooking, XDA, games, GPS, etc.
Battery life is completely subjective to how you use the phone.

sorry about this thread but i am getting a bit confused with flashing roms on my s2. my handset is not even 3 weeks old and i am already sending it back due to the drainage of the battery. what i mean by that is that i must of flashed the handset like over 40 times till i found the rom that would not drain my battery so fast. i tried cognition, villainrom, batista and everything and my battery was going like hell. within like ten minutes of just having wifi on and just doing my normal browsing my battery from fully charged went down to 85% and that is with data package off and hardly any widgets on. and all the time my display was the highest thing in my battery stats taking the most usage of my battery.
anyway i am sending the handset back and hopefully they will send me a new one. what i need to know is that can install any rom on my new handset once i receive it or do i need to find one which matches my firmware. ie say im ke7 do i need to find a rom with baseband ke7 or can i just flash it anyway say with kg6 baseband?]
sorry if my questions sound stupid i just do not want to flash for the sake of it if its going to harm my handset again.
cheers
Multiple flashing is a bad move to solve battery drain .
You can flash any rom .
Baseband is the modem not the firmware .
Why mess up the phone the minuet you get it in your hands again .Far better to read and learn how and what.
better battery stats .

thanks for replying back JJ and yeah i kinda realized now that it was a bad move flashing alot but can you help me with this then. why is it when i flashed a custom rom my display was sky high in battery usage display and now that im back on stock its normal and i mean 30% and lower?
i had an iphone 4 and was into my jailbreaking and etc but i feel like rooting and flashing is a whole lot more confusing or shall i say pro wise.
[QUOTE=JJEgan
Baseband is the modem not the firmware .
but does the baseband matter in what rom to flash though? say i have ke7 baseband do i need to find a custom rom with ke7 or can i upgrade it to the baseband the rom comes with?

No you can use any modem and even flash it on its own .
KG3 7 KG6 probably the best current modems .
A flash requires two further processes . One charge battery fully . Two zero battery stats then the phone must be used for a week or so to get an accurate indication of battery life .
I believe the key to good battery life starts with a good overnight battery drain when the phones is sleeping . If the drain is high here its going to be even higher in use . Aim for 2% drain over twelve hours sleep if its about 20% then stuff is connecting or waking the phone up .

i have already sent the handset bk today so hopefully they will send me the new one by the end of the week. problem is when i put the stock rom back in and upgraded the firmware through kies officially everything on my battery stats looked normal. so i really do not what the problem was with the handset when i flashed a custom rom and made the battery drain quickly? and also worried that seeing that they might send me the handset back and then i would not be able to flash a custom rom? whats your advice please JJ
Wait and see is all i can say .

Hi, I was on Stock 2.3.3 then I flashed wolf's rom and my battery started draining :-(
Now I am back to stock via repair using PCC but the problem still persists... :-(
I need to charge two times a day if I m using my phone continuously... Previously it used to last one day...
Need suggestions on how to improve the battery.... Should I go back to 2.1 and then update it again to 2.3.3 ???
Or any other solution... I am on Stock 2.3.3 at the moment..
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Calibrate it using battery calibration mate.
Fully charge and calibrate it, then use it till fully discharged, and fully charge again.

I never calibrated my battery. I guess what u missed was wiping battery stats before flashing wolf's rom. (he didnt mention this step in the installation procedure as its not mandatory) but this makes a difference I believe. I think u can have one more try. If your stock Rom is already rooted then flash wolf's rom again (or else u might have to go back to 2.1 and root it and flash wolf's rom). Now before u flashing wolf's rom, wipe ur battery stats just before selecting the custom zip (actual rom file). Good luck (PS: I'm on wolf's rom and I'm a heavy used - bluetooth head set on almost 10 - 12 hrs a day and wifi on almost 12 - 16 hrs a day and I usually gets over a day and I'm not using any custom kernels)

I am also somehow hates the battery calibaration method it appears that it takes more from a battery then to give it lol..
Hi, i have a issue with Mobile data limit on ICS
I used to have a Data limit feature but it disappeared..
I don't know exactly when it happened and why
I flashed a custom rom, but came back STOCK LP4 (which is what kies updated me ..) a 4 days ago and rooted it with Siyah kernel 3.3.3 then used Triangle away app
I did nothing else ...
Check the screenshot
Thanks
the feature is there, and data counter is counting since 7 of july, 4 days ago (from 7 of july to 6 of agost).... r u sure u used more than 4 mb(though seem pretty little)???
yess but i used to be something link " put a limit to data usage " to check and then i could put a limit to data usage (i don't know what really in english cause, i use my phone in french)
Yeah i only used 4mb ... i don't use my data always .. just when i really need it, i have a small data plan which i can use only 50 mb per month ..that's why i want to put a limit..
ooohw your right...u dont have the orange horizontal bar in there...., neither the option...
why don't u try flashing again ur rom??? (without wipeing data/factory resets)
Will try.. come back to say if it solve my problem .. Thanks
Dehad u tryed touching the chart?

Same thing happened to me when i updated through Kies to a newer ICS build (from LPC to LPD), but i switched from mobile data chart to wi-fi data chart, messed arround with the settings and finally the option to limit data appeared and i was able to set it like i had it before the update.
Everything seems ok when i updated to LPG .. But seems like LPG modem is less accurate in belgium, i liked my old modem from LP4 .. (don't know what modem exactly is..)
EDIT : When i flashed Siyah kernel 3.3.3b it disappear again, flashed back cf-root everything alright .. i think it come from Siyah kernel 3.3.3b :/ that's sucks because it's very smooth kernel and bettery life is pretty fine !

Hey guys,
I'm here because I'm new to flashing, rooting and whatever comes within this territory. I own a Samsung Galaxy S2 which was bought from a retail store in New Zealand. It's not an imported phone however Vodafone is its "Carrier" of choice.
What I want to do, is flash the device with this ROM because I am having battery drain issues with the Stock ICS 4.0.3 firmware. I have tried everything, removing apps, wiped cache partition a few times, but when Wifi is on 24/7 it drains from 100% to 0% in literally 8-9 hours flat. That's with me doing absolutely nothing with the phone.
I installed BetterBatteryStats and Battery Monitor Widget. The latter app shows my phone discharging -8.0% while Wifi is on and -0.2% when it's off. BetterBatteryStats doesn't indicate anything that is obvious.
So, I'm hoping a ROM like Lighnting may help. Plus, I love it's theme, look and feel.
Down to my real questions.
If I have any issues during flashing of the ROM, can I return the phone back to its stock firmware?
What is the procedure to do so?
Can anything go wrong?
Thank you
STEALA
Here's couple screenshots of my battery usage. Yesterday there was an update so I updated. Wiped cache and factory data reset. All I installed was AirDroid and setup Gmail.
The drain is quite excessive.
you can revert by flashing a stock rom on odin

Oops! Thanks for that.
Well, couldn't get access to Lite'ning ROM website which left me feeling disappointed, as I did want this ROM. I however ended up successfully CF rooted my SGS2 and flashed CyanogenMod v9 Stable. This is the guide that helped me with this: http://www.techethon.com/how-to-install-cyanogenmod-9-galaxy-s2-i9100-version-cm9-ics/
I'm looking forward to playing with this and seeing if my battery drain lasts longer, with Wi-Fi on.

All this While PowerSaving mode was off !! It's really odd !! How a Mobile phone can Degrade like 30% in just 2 Months ?? Is there a Rational explanation for this?

Yes- don't use benchmarks as a tool to judge your device capabilities.
My device, for example, runs the latest custon rom with some additional tweaks which cause it to run WAY faster then most S3s I compared it to (and some s4 devices as well) in terms of responsiveness, game performance, memory usage, and battery drain- but it scores in untuntu varies between 15k-17k.
So, your only worry should be if the device starts to feel too slow for your needs- which can be easily solved by using other rom, kernel or even a different android version.
Ps- what kind of rom + android ver are you using?

Everything is on Stock,(International Version)(4.1.4) I have a Nexus 5 for my Custom Builds and I was thinking to give this S3 to my Mom
I know that Benchmarks aren't everything but getting 900 on CPU integer ?? I finally managed to get like 14k Score on Antutu but there comes another problem the "Freezing Problem" It freezes Randomly (While U can see the Live Wallpaper animations working but everything else is frozen !) sometimes it takes like 72h to freeze sometimes it freezes and after a Hard Reset(Holding Volume Up and Power Button) when it boots up again it freezes in just like 10 minutes ! My main interest is to Know WHY THE HELL is this happening .My last tary would be installing a Custom ROm and see what happens ,So Can I know what's your Build for S3 ?

Mmm... sounds like a SDS issue, try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.vinagre.android.emmc_check to see if
the device has the risky chip. For more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091045

As it says in the SDS thread, 4.1.2 fixes prevents SDS devices from becoming completely bricked, but in a cause of seldom freezes. So, i suggest trying to upgrate to 4.3 rom I gave you (even without possessing the known emmc chip), it should have better prevention against freezes.
