Your keystr file is likely missing from the /efs/imei/ folder. The fix is out there, been discussed dozens and dozens and dozens of times... search for it. You'll need root to do the fix though.

For this:
- make sure USB is plugged into main board USB port, not a hub or keyboard
- try different main board USB ports
- try different USB cables
- uninstall/reinstall Kies (just for drivers - unless you have stand alone drivers installed)
- last resort, try a different computer
Failing all those, your port may be going bad. Does it charge?

Are you rooted? If your efs folder is completely empty, I think that either means you don't have permission to read it (which may mean you're not rooted), OR, the other possibility is that when you flashed to ICS, you also chose to wipe EFS. Which is a BAD BAD BAD idea. I'm surprised you can even make a phone call.
Wait; can you even make a phone call?

You should really be pressing that little button called Thanks on every post this guy is posting for you. They are being really helpful, and saying thanks in a post isn't very nice.
As one guy's signature said: "If you say thanks in a post, you have written it in the sand, to be washed away, but if you click the Thanks button, it is written in stone, never to be deleted."
Not trying to hate, just be grateful for this person's help.

No.
But here's one thing I just remembered about you can try.
On your dialer, enter code *#7284#. This brings up your PhoneUtil screen.
Should have UART and USB sections. Ignore the UART section.
USB section SHOULD be set to PDA. If it is not, set it to PDA. If it IS, change it to MODEM, then BACK to PDA. Then back out of the screen, reboot, and try again.

Hi there
I have a problem with my Samsung s2.
I have installed kies nor any other software on my pc to sync my phone to it. i don't even know how kies works...
I was going through the phone and under system i saw the update option...i updated the phone and the firmware too...after about 3-4 installations and reboots the phone got stuck on the start up screen...i tried hard reboot by holding the power+volume up+menu/OK keys - Nothing happened
then i deleted all my files from the sd card but that dint help either. Then i saw a video on youtube about clockworkmod... i followed that and after doing so the phone now goes to start up screen with a yellow triangle. when i try installing the ROM from odin it fails. Since then i got an icon showing that there is an error on the connectivity between the phone and the computer...i ran the clockworkmod again using odin and the phone returned to start up screen with a yellow triangle. The phone only goes to download mode but doesn't go to recovery/clockworkmod anymore (power+volume up+menu/OK buttons).
Another weird thing is that the phone doesn't turn off, as in if i press the power button for about 5 seconds the screen goes off but turn back on again...so if i have to reboot the phone i have to completely remove the battery n put it back in. when connected to the computer i don't see any storage drives on my computer only Odin detects the phone.
Please help me...
Thanks
Abbas
first try if you dont have a jig, remove battery and put back then Vol-down+Home+power...once you get download mod
Try a stock GB version on the ODIN from the link of All stock roms in my signature
make sure KIES is not running...and connected your phone directly to your PC motherbord USB socket, not through any hub or front USB socket...
better you give a full description of your problem like "soft bricked" instead of just "Q" on the heading, so that other can see at a glance...
Hi Zaheed,
Sorry about the heading...i actually accidentally posted this thread without the heading and now i cant see where i can edit it.
I will try what you have suggested and will revert to you.
Thanks

you can download it from here http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=1#regiona
latest GB is XWLA4
Make sure your phone is I9100, not I9100G / I9100T or any other
---------- Post added at 01:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:06 PM ----------
this one is working: http://skywanker.net/download/downl...9100_DBT_I9100XWLA4_I9100XXKI4_I9100DBTKH1.7z
just download and unzip, then you wil get a single file, which to be selected from PDA of ODIN...thats it
feel free to ask more....
Hi once again,
i have just checked and found out that my phone's model is I9100G and not I9100. is this a problem or would i need to download another software for that?

Wiped out my cellphone.. now when I turned on it requieres an activation.. I'm trying to flash it so I can use the wifi only. It says "press send to activate your phone" I've tried to use the Odin Multi Downloader v4.43 to flash the ROM I tried several of them(geewiz-2.9-system-09272012.tar and eh03_full_odin.tar) both of them give the same error message which says Unnamed File was not found...I totally lost now I just don't know what else to do.
Please help if you can...Thank you!
To bypass activation screen, go to emergency call, press *#83786633.
Then press the home key and it should bypass it. I think you need to do this after every reboot.

I got passed the Activation screen, now what to do about the Odin I tried to flash the phone using the Odin Multi Downloader v4.43
and I used those two ROM images I tried several of them(geewiz-2.9-system-09272012.tar and eh03_full_odin.tar)

Thanks!
Is there a difference between Odin Multi Downloader and regular Odin? Why don't you try Odin 1.85 and see if that works. I'm a noobie too so I'm not sure if I can help.

That would be a quick fix if I could get to the dialpad, the screen is black with picture of a phone, yellow sign and computer because I was in the middle of imaging the phone when it failed the process thats all it has every time I turn it on and nothing else. I try to use different USB cable in different computers and no luck and none of those systems would detect the phone. My question was if there is a way to use the SD card to do the reimage instead of the USB and if there it is not, this phone will be absolute and I'm sure you gurus in here have a way to fix my problem.
Thank you!
Pull the battery
hold down volume down button
plug in usb cable
that should put you in download mode
Have Odin up and re flash your file using PDA

Thanks, that link is enough to get me started..but is it something i could just download and instal on my pc,connect my phone and repair or i would need a kinda of pad or something...saw a video on youtube where something was connected or soldered to the phone and then plugged to the pc without the battery.
Thanks.
If you spend money on a RIFF box, unless you know what you're doing/have done it before more than a few times, there's a fair chance you'll both pay for something you'll never use again & bork your phone beyond repair.
Pay someone else a quarter of the cost & have them do it/successfully fix your phone (assuming it can be JTAG'd & isn't a MB replacement job).

Stock ROM, something like this.
Alright, thanks for this.I just ordered for a USB jig and i pray it will save the day.
Thanks to all that contributed.
I rooted my GS3, tried to upload a new ROM, finished installing the ROM and hit reboot and it bricked. My PC wont pick it up, neither will Kies and neither will a toolkit. My PC makes connections sounds when I press the power button, but it wont turn on and my PC wont recognize it. Please help me!
Ok, slow down and explain exactly what Rom you where trying to install, and the installation steps you took for a start

it was the revolt ROM from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2035365.
it came with a set up wizard which i thought was strange. i went through all the steps that it asked for. then at the end it had a reboot now button and i clicked it. it then powered off and never came back on. when i plug it into the computer it makes a sound like it connected, but then it says the driver failed to install. the driver that it lists is QHSUSB_DLOAD. i downloaded that driver manually from the samsung website and it still says its not found.
when i plug in the phone to a charger without the battery in, the red light comes on for about 1 minute and then turns off. that's as far as ive gotten so far.
Will it boot into recovery?
---------- Post added at 08:33 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:32 AM ----------
If it does, try wiping cache and dalvik cache and try reboot, failing that you might have to try wiping data

Did you format system before you flashed the Rom?

It will not boot at all. I have tried all the different key combinations. I did not format system but I did choose to wipe data and cache in Rom manager when I said to install from sd.
So you tried to install it via Rom manager?

yes. And then when it rebooted it took me into the wizard to install it step by step. Then at the very end when it said to reboot now, The screen went black and it never turned on again.

I've tried those combinations. It doesn't turn the phone on, but when it's plugged in to the computer and I do that it makes a sound as if a device has been plugged in. Then it fails downloading the driver and doesn't show up. Not even in the adb toolkit.

I forgot to mention that my s3 model is the i747 one if that makes any difference.
Anything you do with help from this forum might damage your phone beyond repair. Better ask in the Q&A sub-forum under AT&T, Rogers, Bell Samsung Galaxy S3 forum.
Good luck!

Yes I tried taking the battery out and that didn't work either. I flashed that Rom because I didn't think there was a difference. Does this mean I'm screwed?

I'm sorry, but it kinda seem you are.
Your device's SKU is not the same as i9300 ones.
You installed the Rom of one device to another, it can easily hard brick your cell which it might have.
nothing you can do now beside sending it in

Could a Samsung service center fix it? They probably can't tell it's rooted right?
Also, I have a dual boot of Linux on my laptop. Would there be a better chance of Linux recognizing the device?
they can't "fix" it, they'll replace the motherboard. they won't tell if it's rooted. Linux is not better. have you tried a usb jig?

Alright a few questions:
what is a USB jig?
how much do they charge to replace a motherboard?
if they ask me if its rooted should I lie and say no?
also, I think its under warranty, but would rooting it void it and could they tell?
motherboard replacement is around $350. Lying would be insurance fraud, so I can't give you any advice here. They might decline warranty if they find out you're rooted.
And to find out what a USB jig is you can use Google

Hey guys,
So I've scoured the internet to no avail, perhaps someone smarter than me can be of some use here. Here's my problem:
I have an S3, when plugging it into ANY PC with one of four USB cables, it starts charging, and does nothing else, the PC does not pick it up at all. I know there's no problem with the cable or the PC because I've tried it with another S3 which is detected immediately by windows.
I've tried multiple codes, setting it to Modem and PDA mode, I even did a factory reset which brings me to my second problem: I lost the data I thought I'd backed up.
So I'm not worried about recovering this data, I'm fairly certain I'll be able to get it back if I can get this USB working, but I'm out of ideas. I know it's not my drivers, because 3 different PC's manage to detect the other S3 without a hitch.
I've removed the battery, the sim card, rebooted, booted in download mode. Still nothing.
Any ideas?
PS: First post FTW. I'm not one to ask for these things unless I've exhausted all other resources, so if there is actually a working solution I've missed, I apologise in advance.

Hmm I'd give it a try if I could actually connect it to a pc... There's no way to flash anything straight from the phone, correct?

Ok thanks will give it a try
Another question, in terms of recovery. I made xml and vcf backups onto the internal storage, thinking they'd stay on the device. Should the USB mode not work, is there any way for me to recover these files from the device? The apps I've seen so far, only recover images. Which is great, but not completely helpful.

Use PhilZ recovery there is a odin compatible version in his thread you can flash and also a Aroma installer add on where you can browse and copy files in recovery. Look in his thread >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201860 << post three explains Aroma and how to use.

Lol, I assumed as much. I deduced that the microUSB port must have had some form of internal breakage. Which is fine, I'll get that repaired if I can. I failed to mention it's a family member's phone. So I'm a bit weary of doing too much hacking/flashing, etc.
I did manage to root it with that Aragorn rooting app, I forget the name. I then installed DiskDigger and recovered some images, a good start. I'm still somewhat lost as to how I can recover XML and VCF files, as DiskDigger doesn't seem to support such formats. Those were my SMS and contact backups.
PS: I appreciate all the help so far Tallman, many thanks
