I am in need of some quick assistance. I opened my case to my GT10.1 this morning and found a scratch. I have until tomorrow to return this and plan on doing so at lunch today (about 3 hours from now).
Being as I am rooted, how do I un-root and return to stock?
Do I just flash this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118132
and if so, do I flash it from recovery or what?
I'm not sure that would unroot the device. In this thread there's a link to the stock rom, but again, I don't believe that would unroot. Where did you buy it? I'm pretty sure they'd probably just take it back anyway. Chances are the employees won't even be able to tell its rooted.

Actually, I went ahead and flashed the 3.1 OTA which does indeed return it to stock/unroot as the apps the required root are no longer working. However, you have to do a wipe as well to remove all of your apps/data/etc. Afterwards, I hooked it up to my computer and removed all of the non-stock folders.
I got it from Best Buy and since I'm a premiere silver customer, I have 45 days to return with no re-stock fee . Honestly though, I just want a new one.
The only thing I'm not sure on is the recovery. I did not check that to see if it was still CWM or not. I'm guessing they won't even check that though (or hoping rather).

You'll get a blank confused stare if you mention the word recovery. Its good to know that its that easy to unroot. I wonder if odin can remove the custom recovery. I really have little to no knowledge of these things.
You have to ODIN stock recovery as well.

Care to explain/shed some light on it ?

lol...True.
So I had them put on the Invisible Shield while I was there (this way I avoided doing it and no finger prints). I let it sit in my office over the weekend then turned it on today. Come to find out, a brand new in box that I have has the locked bootloader . Luckily, I read up on things and have since rooted it.
So let me get this straight, you scratched your device and returned it for a new one? That doesn't seem wrong to you?

First, I scratched nothing. It was in a protective case (Belkin Case) in the same spot overnight not moving. Nothing touched it, nor did anyone. I opened the case (lifted the flap) and there was what looked like a small scratch. As I looked at it more, there seemed to be more of a dent to the scratch than anything. Maybe it was a crack, either way I'm not sure. Regardless, I returned it as in my opinion, this was not caused by me, and was more than likely a defect. This is suppose to be (as I've been told) Gorilla Glass, which I believe is hard to scratch. Nevertheless, my device (which was under coverage/warranty/within return time frame) was flawed and as such returned. If it was something that I had done, things would be different.
Anyways, back on topic (thanks for the de-rail/non-helpful/offtopic post). It was easy enough to un-root and just as easy to get things going to root the new device even though it was locked. Thanks to those who provided useful information .
This looks like a good place for me to ask my question...
I'm getting a used GTab 10.1 (should get it tomorrow) but it's coming rooted and running a custom ROM. I'm a noob when it comes to rooting and romming, especially on tablets. I would really like to unroot and flash it back to stock, but I'm not sure exactly how to do that. The OP said that it was pretty easy, but I'm not sure what I need to do, or what ODIN is, and how that would help me.
If anyone can help me out and give me a few pointers, it would definitely be greatly appreciated.

I recommend reading the sticky thread in the Development section. This will have all the files you need to return the tab to stock. It will also help you with..
What clockworkMod recovery is. How to flash the stock ROM zips, and/or Use the Odin flashing software to flash stock recovery and do a full wipe of the tab.
There are some youtube videos out there as well. Read lots and ask questions!
Also check galaxytabhacks.com. it have videos of rooting, unrooting, installing custom ROMs etc.
Sent from my GT-P7510
Sorry to completely hijack the thread, but I've got everything I need downloaded (I think). Picked up the files for dummies zip in the developer thread and I watched the video on galaxytabhacks.com (and I'll probably watch again). I'm supposed to get the Tab today, so if I have anymore questions, I'll be back here.
Thanks to both of you guys for your advice.
What should I do to my rooted Prime before sending it in for RMA? Should I unroot via Vipermod and then factory reset or is there something else I need to do either before, during or after this process?
Thanks .

If all you did was root it and not unlock it then I would unroot, factory reset and then pack it up.
I am not sure if you can re-root it with .21 OTA. I am unlocked so I have not kept up with that aspect.
good luck!
If you used OTA Rootkeeper, make sure to delete the su backup before you unroot.
Thanks.
Ah balls, unrooted and factory reset before deleting backup! Ah well, I don't think I'll be sending it back just yet anyway (It's just a camera issue so nothing too major) so hopefully Vipermod can root .21 by the time I do send it back.

IDK, maybe count yourself lucky for leaving it....if they don't notice, at least you can recover your root when it gets back...
I scrubbed mine for my RMA, and now kinda wished I rolled the dice on them not noticing the SU backup....hate to unlock and lose warranty, but I probably will if we don't end up with a root soon.
Find someway to document your Prime's current condition so they don't blame you for anything that happens during shipping or in their facilities. Something like record your prime and the serial and then record some live television, etc.

don't think its worth unlocking and losing warranty on the prime... i got my prime in jan with a bc serial. the camera was working for fine 3 whole months.. then suddenly it stops working with the green/static screen...
ofcourse unless the devs come out with their own unlock that doesnt void whats left of my warranty ;D
PHOTOGRAPHS! Take PHOTOGRAPHS!
For my past two RMAs I have even included a few of the photos WITH the prime in the box. After photos, take a short video show casing the prime as you package it and put it in the box for shipping. Then tape the box closed IN the video and write the RMA number on the box. Be very verbose about what you're doing in the video. If they receive it CID you have PROOF that you shipped it in whatever condition it was when you had it. Anything past you is either their fault or the shippers.
For example, my first RMA was me shipping my Prime back for having small holes in the metal backing.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4784673/Pictures/Photos/Prime/Pitting 1.jpg - I included THIS picture in the box.
My second Prime arrived from the RMA facility NEW Still SEALED in Box. I received it with a NON-functioning backlight, but the screen still worked.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4784673/Pictures/Photos/Prime/DSCF2061-1.jpg - I included THIS picture in the box.
Definitely photo and/or video the prime and something like live news or something that can't be faked/replayed. This way whne they send you pics of "your customer induced damaged" prime and ask for $400 to repair a $500 product you have evidence. I did all of this and thank God didn't need it (But that is because I took the precautions)
I just sent my Prime into the Canadian facility in Ontario.
I backed up all my apps onto my SD card then removed the card. I deleted all apps, data, and caches for apps with personal data (just an extra cautionary step), then I did a wipe/factory reset. Then I took pictures of my Prime documenting condition, s/n sticker, and that it operates. Boxed it up and took more pictures of the packaging. Then sent it in.
One thing I'll say is the from the time I put the RMA request in to when I got the RMA number was 12 hours. ASUS responded very quickly. We'll see how long it takes to get a unit back once they receive it.
Ah yes, I shall definately be taking pictures of the unit with a daily paper next to it for example. I installed Rootkeeper and deleted the SU backup without root, whether it worked or not is unknown although I'm sure somebody can clear that up.

Agreed, but after the two all expense paid trips my tablet has taken back to TX, it will have to completely crap out before I set it back to those hacks again. Each trip they fix something and break something else.....sorry wrong thread to rant about poor RMA service....
Those recommending photos are spot on. I would even suggest detailed photos of the aluminum finish (mine returned with significant surface rubs--obviously when they were applying pressure to remove the front glass).
I really think that after I register for the gps addon toy on Monday, I toss Asus the one finger solute and unlock. I haven't owned an android device for more then a week without placing a custom rom on it, so the four months I have had this one is some kind of record.
just come back from a trip to HK.
recently having loads of problems with the browser, then i saw one of the threads here this morning about just doing a factory reset and it should fix it.
On a whim, i decided that's what I'll do. Completely forgetting that I had photos on my prime from my trip that I want/need.
Stupidly, I didn't make my prime auto sync to g+ drop box and such (no idea why because my Phone does)
Anyway, so i have about 150 photos I need.
My asus is not back to factory settings. I've done as little as possible to it..ie prevented it downloading anything new.
What is the best way to try and recover my files from before reformatting it.
I don't really want to root (there's no real point) but I will if I can unroot and go back to stock.

At this time there is no way of rooting your Prime when you are on the latest 21 firmware.
Except unlocking.

A factory reset won't wipe your pictures from your virtual SD card. You just need to set up adb on a computer and then you can do the following:
First make sure you have the drivers installed from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426502
How to set up the SDK/ADB is here: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/what-is-adb-and-how-to-install-it-android/
1) Make a folder called Pictures on your desktop
2) Open a command prompt and change directories to where you have adb installed (i.e. cd c:\sdk\platform-tools
3) Pull your pics from your tablet to your PC:
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/Pictures "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop\Pictures\"
Adjust the path in that command as needed for your PC.
I hope that helps.

Hi all, I decided to finally take the dive a couple days ago to unlock my beloved prime and try out androwook and other custom roms that supposedly put stock to shame. However, I was unfortunately confronted by a crude and nasty message along the lines of:
Code:
An unknown error occurs, which may be a network connection issue.
Please wait and try again later
As usual, I unrooted, rebooted, and tried again. No luck.
I disabled and uninstalled ATP Tweak (sio scheduler/systune), replaced my modified dock keyboard files (browser mod, switched alt/search buttons), and tried again. No luck.
Factory reset from the settings menu. No luck.
Placed the .28 US update on my SD card, rebooted, and re-flashed the update. No luck.
Where does that leave me now? Locked and feeling imprisoned. I'm wondering if it is worth it to downgrade and try unlocking. So far, I have only seen one person have any success with this. Due to the potential brick risk, I want to stay away from this unless I know it will work. I also know that Asus asked for the MAC address of a prime owner with this issue, but that didn't go anywhere.
This seems like it may be an issue that is experienced by anyone that RMA'ed their tablet for whatever reason. I, personally, sent mine in for a green camera issue and mura, but do not think that they changed my motherboard.
I am also curious to see how many other people are having this issue. If it is sizable, I am willing to start a petition to Asus for them to support their unlock tool and fix this stupid error without an RMA. To that effect, please answer the poll above to let me gather some data on the unlock tool.
Thanks to everyone for your help and support that makes xda such an amazing community!
PS I don't want to see any "Asus sucks" posts. There are tons of other threads for that so please spare us
Additional info:
Have tried this on several different network connections.
Have not yet contacted Asus to see if they have my prime listed as "unlocked" already, but will do so sometime this week.
Logcat of running unlock tool results in this:
Code:
D/KeyBoxService(10158): === StatusCode: SC_UNAUTHORIZED!
D/KeyBoxService(10158): === OTA BEGIN
E/KeyBoxService(10158): === Connection to http://wvdrm.asus.com refused
D/KeyBoxService(10158): === Retry after 600 seconds.
D/KeyBoxService(10158): === OTA END
July 13th Update:
I have contacted Asus with this information. I learned something interesting. Asus has my tablet (s/n) listed as LOCKED. They also did not replace my mainboard when I RMA'ed the tablet. I also have not had the unknown serial number issue. Considering those were the 3 criteria a few of us had considered to be the reasons for not being able to unlock, I am now baffled.
I am going to continue communicating with Asus and hopefully push the matter a little bit more so that something happens. As I was told, "HQ is probably aware and working towards a fix". Let's hope that happens sooner rather than later.
September 5th update:
Seems that Asus HQ figured out a fix, but it requires an RMA. We'll find out soon if it actually works...
September 29th update:
Some of the members in this thread have sent their primes in for an RMA to fix the issue. The first prime back STILL has the problem. Asus HQ is looking into the matter...again...
Asus wants me to resend my tablet back to RMA to see if they can fix the problem. I'll see what they have to say, don't really want to RMA back. It's a software issue it seems to me, changing any hardware will just make it worse.
edit: Email was no help. Dumb. Stuck again! Yay

I found a tool for downgrading that worked pretty well, and when combined with Sparkys tool that will root you so easily on .28, the process of downgrading might be worth a try once you've done everything else.
I'm anxious to hear if anyone who's never rooted and has a serial number has ever had this problem.
I thought my tablet hadn't been unlocked correctly because of some issues and some of the people helping me troubleshoot and figure out the prime when I first got it told me to try running the unlock tool again and said i should get a response, but I always got the same network error. However I bought my prime second hand and it had been rooted before. Finally ended up doing some manual tests with ADB to determine if my problem was unlock related and it wasn't.
I had just gotten the prime, and people said even being unlocked I still shouldn't have gotten that network error. I just gave up after that, and have always wondered if it was related to it being previously rooted.
I can't unlock my tablet. I just don't get any error message at all. But I am 100% sure it's not unlocked.
No Problems here
I have a rooted 0.28, I did not root until after I got the 0.28 update.
I just ran the unlock tool downloaded from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510737
I had to use the dropbox downlown because the one from ASUS would not work.
Unlocked, no issues. No factor reset necessary, no removing root. Now i'm completely unlocked and ruined my warranty just for you guys.
Now i'm going to go install a custom rom.

Unlocking by a dummy
I unlocked a couple of weeks ago but it wasn't easy. Why? because I am half dumb and need reading glasses. It took me part of 2 days to figure out what was going on. I would get to the final scare screen that warns you that if you do this you are screwed forever and then I could not go any further. There were no buttons to click or agreement check boxes to check just the sad warning big as life.
Then I watched a video, the one with the hyper dude with braces unlocking his prime. And I realized I was missing the buttons on that warning screen. It occurred to met that I had amped up my font size so I could read my tablet without my reading glasses. This action made the font from the warning too big to fit the button on the screen. Went into settings, decreased font size, unlocked, never better.

No, never had to RMA. My device is from the US and I'm in Poland so I'm not sure if an RMA would work anyway. I've had it for a month and besides the left screen tearing issue, it works great!
I'm going to install Wooki first and see how that goes. TWRP is already installed and backup has been created. I'll report back if this fixes things. I'm going to try without doing a full wipe (cache and dalvik only). I don't really want to re-install everything.

From past experience, you should always do a full wipe especially if you want your prime to be performing well. Do a titanium backup of all your apps (the pro version is WELL worth the money) and you'll be up and running with an hour exactly how you were before. Good luck!

Yes, my experience with the HTC Desire tells me a full wipe is probably necessary, however I don't like titanium backup. It takes too long and it's easier just letting everything trickle in over the market. I've also found that, unless you're moving from 2.3 to 4.0.x clearing dalvik and cache usually works just as well. It's not like any rom formats the internal memory to use a different setup with better performance...though maybe that's not a bad idea.
BTW, when I said the one from ASUS wouldn't work, I meant it would not download. It just looping on my tablet to which browser it should use, and I eventually gave up and tried the other link.
Got my prime back from asus RMA no more chance to unlock. My prime was unlocked before send to RMA.
They changed the board or chip, when I did the RMA the .28 update JUST came out so I tried applying it before I sent it off. Worked, so it was updated. Then they sent it back after RMA and it was a March update, way back. Don't think they downgraded, but they did change something. Then no unlock at all (though I never tried beforehand, I imagine it would have worked)

I had .28 rooted and was able to do the unlock no problem. I had to download the app from a dropbox account as I was unable to download from ASUS's website.
The issue seems to be related to RMAs. I bought mine 2nd hand from a guy who got it from his boss, so theres no way of knowing if it was ever returned. It doesnt seem to matter on which firmware you are or if you are rooted or not.... All we (probably) have in common is the RMA factor. At least thats progress!
i have a LG L164VL it is rooted or was I don't use it as a phone anymore it's my streamer gotta have one right I do a lot of streaming to tv I'm a cord cutter in sorts i did a factory reset now it will not get past where it says looking for updates i thinking it might be bricked or might be easy fix. As just a streamer for a few years worked great for little things and streaming hope you guys know maybe how I can get it back thanks have a great day
Help with the messaging here
I get a message saying someone replied I can't see anything I don't know how to use this site I guess
How did you root it?
KingO root
I used king O Root everything was great for a week or so then something happened it just started acting funny I shut it off and the next morning I powered it up and everything was downhill it stopped at the safe start so that's what I did and it took off to start loading. It was like it was factory reset it started going through the steps of that got past where it looks for the sim card well I took that out long ago its sole purpose is just for streaming and you know searching internet for streams it wasn't a phone anymore never used it as one other than at the beginning when I first got it got past that into the looking for software updates and that is where it got to and that's as far as it will go I don't know what do you think I have did a factory reset to try that was no help same stopping point I don't see any of the backup apps not 1 Ann I know they were there.....Thanks for looking I hope someone has answers so I can get my streamer going Thanks
well, if it is bric you can try anything and see how it goes? have you done anything besides KingRoot?
IDK if there is any downloads for this like stock images or whatever, guess not.
I'm hoping for some info of ANY sort other than 'no root' or 'brick'.
