I'm so frustrated, ive had the prime for over a month and love 99% of it EXCEPT the fact that the black bar at the bottom is constantly there. The buttons dim, but the bar does not. 500$ for a 10.1 screen, and you cannot actually use all 10.1? Irritating! I have the galaxy nexus phone which is also on ics and while watching videos, the bar disappears, and when you touch in that area it returns. Why in the world is this like this with the prime...not the iPad? And how is there not a way to make this happen without a hack (which i don't have a clue about) and possibly screwing up the tab? An inch may not seem like much but to me it is. Why promote a 10.1 screen when you cannot use all 10.1 inches? I should feel like im watchin all videos in "widescreen" on a 10.1 inch screen!
So is there a fix for this? Ive tried every media player, none do it!

You are not able to do it stock inside of android. There's a mod over in the Xoom forum that allows you to toggle it via an installed "app." There is probably a way to port it over to the Transformer Prime (especially since the mod was for the Team EOS rom on the Xoom, and that was just announced for this device today).
This is a racist thread.

This is the link to the thread about the mod for the XOOM. Don't flash this on your device obviously. But if you can find someone else who would be able to modify for the Prime, or message the OP for that thread, then we could get it to work on here. If not, there's no way to remove the navigation bar with a simple app like we could in Honeycomb. This method requires modifying the system to stop the process for the bar and then start it again when you open the apk.

Well all you have to do is delete systemui.apk from your system apps. That'll make it hide good and long, friend. Although it also glitches out tons of other stuff. And it not only hides but deletes it...

Darn, I lost root with the .21 update
1 inch? You do have a problem.
Actually the home bar is about 8mm wide which comes out to .3 inches so you actually have 9.8 inches of viewing area.
Damn, some people complain about the smallest things.
What is the taskbar activity called?
Maybe i can write a tasker profile for it

Well, when you pay $500 for a 10.1 inch tablet and you cannot view the entire screen....it is a big deal, inch or not. The IPAD doesn't do that, my galaxy nexus's status bar hides when video is playing and all you have to do is touch at the bottom and it pops up. Not sure why I would want t "widescreen" experience on a 10.1 inch screen.
The iPad does not do that because it has a physical home button, so if you would like that feel free to buy one. If you are looking to remove it, run AOKP ROM. It allows you to use the power menu to toggle the taskbar on and off, thus allowing you to use the full screen.

Hey all,
Searched the forums for this and found a bit of discussion, but not a fix.
I know some people are using swiftkey x and not having display problems, but for me it's borked, no matter what i do. I've tried clearing app data, removing and reinstalling etc - nothing seems to work. Settings pages occupy about 2/3 of the screen real estate, centered horizontally and stuck to the top of the screen vertically, and when the keyboard is in use, it takes up 80% of the screen but mostly with black empty space. For this latter reason, it's pretty much unusable.
My carrier is Orange UK, but my handset is a retail/SIM unlocked stock ROM. It is up to date with OTA updates.
Is there a fix for this? Or am i screwed?
Thanks all, and apologies if this question has already been answered - i did try in earnest to find it.
Sorry but need to ask... Where did you get it from?
I got mine from the Market and all is good and dandy.

must agree, no problems at all........
I'm using the betas and havent seen such a problem, be it on stock, cm7 or customized blur roms. Maybe try spare parts and disable that legacy app fix.

No worries The market just like you. In fact i've been a SwiftKey customer for a long long time. My old SwiftKey licence seemed to transfer over to SwiftKey X when it was formally released. I did have the X beta, and at first it was fine, then after one particular update it started with this screen problem, and has been that way ever since, even after the official first release.

This sounds hopeful! I haven't heard of spare parts but im assuming its some sort of tweaking program? I can use it to disable some sort of legacy fix for older, none qHD apps? is that right?
EDIT: I installed spare parts but just have the following options on a settings-style screen:
battery history
battery information
usage stats
window anims
transition anims
fancy input anims
fancy rotation anim
end button behavior
haptic feedback
compatibility mode
wifi sleep policy
activity/process management
brightness mode
font size
show compass in maps
Only one which looks promising is compatibility mode?
EDIT2: Thanks a lot for that crnkoj - got it working! For all who're reading this thread and want to know: use spare parts to disable compatibility mode!
Sure, np. And ye, i meant compatibility fix just didn't remember the correct name.
I know I read that kernel sources are not yet released for this to happen, is that still the case ? I really miss my buttons on the view, I`m cool with everything else, but I keep pressing it.
Ok I guess I have to be a bit more clear I'm reffering to HC on view and how the disabled hardware buttons and I was told we need kernel source in order to do this
Yes, if you visit http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads
You will see that only kernels for Gingerbread are released.
So no go on the buttons ? Life is so much easier with them

That's one reason I'm not going to apply the Honeycomb update to my Flyer. I like the touch buttons on the bezel and those would be lost if I apply the Honeycomb update. Gingerbread is running very well, I will just keep it at that for now.
HW buttons are the main reason why i went back to GB, you also lose screen real estate with HC. But the pen works everywhere on HC. But the main thing is you lose 1/2 inch of screen space for HC buttons.
Yeah HC is not bad and ability to use pen everywhere is great. But I do want the buttons back
Honestly I really don't mind the buttons being missing. I think its cool that HTC put 2 sets of them, and pretty much made they completly invisible when you aren't using them, but honeycomb doesn't need them so why should they be there?

Yeah it needs it. It would be much better with out the bar !
The bar is a bit annoying. I really figured google had come up with a way for the bar to not display when the whole screen was needed. Guess not. Fail.
Really its not hard to fix it either. Simply just make the bar appear when you hit the volume rocker. Hopefully ICS fixed this.
You can have the HW buttons on HC if you are rooted and are using a rom that alows you so. I hate the new bar, but it's a price i'm willing to pay to have the pen working everywhere.

thank you very much... i will message him

Hey thanks so much! This is really helpful. I am glad it's working properly. The grey bar actually had an ad on it and that is why its there. It looks like he's using an adblocker. This shouldn't be an issue in the full version though. If it's too intrusive then we might have to do something else. It looks fine on a 10" tablet though. It depends on demand.
I just tried it on my Galaxy Tab 7" running ICS and it works fine. The grey bar isn't intrusive. If you hide the categories (from the menu) then everything is spacious enough.
I didn't realize there was an ad there. It must have been showing while I wasn't looking. And I agree, it would definitely look nicer on a bigger screen, but that's what we get for buying 7 inch tablets!
My TabZ is running quite smoothly now but I'm very itchy to up it
Just wandering what are the main pros of 4.2.2 specific to the Xperia Tab Z?

My problem is the phablet UI.
I bought the Tablet Z to have a full 10.1" Tablet experience and not a phablet/smartphone experience.
I might try the update, since I created a FTF file of 4.1.2 there is always a way back right?

The update is a bit okay with me. it has toggles in the notification bars for shortcut unlike the old one. Sony just unified the android 4.2.2 experience. hopefully there will be no new bugs comes with the new update.
It makes little sense to update. 4.1.2 works great, while 4.2.2 only brings ****ty phablet UI, removes SmallApps shortcut and seems to impact streaming negatively.
Not looking forward to the loss of additional pixel rows to the second new phablet bar at the top. However I'm definitely not planning to stay at a specific ancient version longer than I have to so I might as well get used to it. If it annoys me too much I'll go scout for unofficial UI patches or roms to remove it.
But why do you want to go away from the so-called "ancient" version?
It does all what one wants, and it does it fast and stable!
Or what do you miss? (Only thing I can understand is when LTE version users want to update because they finally get the exFAT support... although with some research there are other possibilities to get files >4GB on the microSD...)
Sometimes people dismiss something only because it's supposed as "old". I think this is - at least in this case - BS.

But it doesn't, IMHO. It may do all *you* want it to do, sure. But different people have different priorities and desires.
The old version is not receiving any (official) security patches and the new versions are introducing stuff I personally look forward to. Stuff like a modular lockscreen, multiuser functions and later on the priceless possibility to revoke individual app permissions in 4.3+.
No doubt it'll introduce as many new bugs and break old stuff. Everyone has to evaluate for himself if the good outweighs the bad. And if the balance just can't be met, there may still be other ways forward in the form of customized ROMs.
Some people will definitely make the wrong decision at first, realize it and go back. Thankfully they can, with some effort.
I'm not saying that staying at an old version is a bad thing. If you see the full picture of what you're missing (or not missing!) then it's a legit decision to make for yourself.
I am just wondering ... why have they decided to put the navigation buttons in the worst possible place? ...placing them in the middle instead of near the corners means I have to stretch my thumb a lot to press the Back button when using my tablet in landscape mode (which is 99% of the time).
The same happened at the notification bar at the top.
It just seems like they decided to just have one UI, and then just didn't care that the new UI seems very unwieldy to people with a large tablet. And the is coming from a guy with pretty long fingers.
I am not thinking that turning my tablet into a mobile is the way forward. Quite disappointed with that part of the new update, and I just know it will annoy the heck out of me.
It's a google thing .. From 4.2.2 there is no tablet UI
It's a shame about The UI. But I guess it's something you need to get used to. Can't seem to See The logic in that decision. It forces user to operate their tablet one handed. Not terribly well for 10" tabs. Unless it is one as light as XTZ.
Sent from my Xperia Tablet Z using XDA Premium HD
Because the Tablet Z is so light, I just hold it in my left hand and use my right hand for screen touches & typing. So for me having buttons in the middle of the bottom bar is easier and more consistent with my phone.
If you use a launcher like Nova you can hide the top status/notification bar and use gestures to show it (as I do).
In addition to this, now that I'm on CM 10.2 I'm using Pie, so I have no visible navigation bar as well.
Guys, the problem with the >=4.2 layout is not how you can reach best for the soft keys.
The problem is the incredible waste of screen estate by having two bars and one of them (the fatter one at that) being mostly just black with 3 tiny buttons in the middle.

While it may be a AOSP thing that doesn't mean it has to be a Sony thing, each OEM makes their own version of Android and can change pretty much any thing they want to about it. This is just them being lazy with it and not wanting to go through the trouble to change the nav bar to the version we have in 4.1.2.

I have to agree with this. Seems to be pure laziness from Sony's side to not make use of the tablet's extra space.
Does anyone know if there is ROM out there that "fixes" the issue?
For me, holding the tablet in one hand is a no-go. Even though it is light, I would not want to handle it like my phone. It gets heavy after a while. I hold it like a book, at the edges in landscape mode. Now I (almost) can't reach the navigation buttons.
Also I have the 4G version, and the navigation pane can't even properly show the line with the service provider's name.
If they wanted to be lazy, they could just have gone full Google-experience. This seems just half-assed.
When you mess around with your phone (flashing, adb commands, etc) what would you like to be done easier for you? I'm currently building a tool that'll be universal and open source.

My friend has a Rom of 4.2 on his gs3 and nexus 7 that allows for "tickle" wake up. So it's not the double tap, but just a swipe across the screen. I haven't personally used it so I'm not sure if it has to be in the Rom or if we could add it in.

There is a similar one called PGM2, I used it on my Galaxy Nexus. It requires a kernel that supports it. (most of the custom kernels do). You can set it to respond to tapping the screen, swiping, etc. You can simply swipe to the left across the bottom of the screen to turn it off. I love my Galaxy Nexus.... I just upgraded to the S4 2 weeks ago with the Verizon Unlimited Data keeping option and despite no custom kernel/4.3 support due to ME7, I LOVE this phone even more...the speed is phenomenal and I get more than triple the battery life of my Galaxy Nexus (and it has an extended battery). I'm running Hyperdrive rom and it's more than enough to keep me happy until if/when kexec support or other bootloader workaround is available.
