I know I read that kernel sources are not yet released for this to happen, is that still the case ? I really miss my buttons on the view, I`m cool with everything else, but I keep pressing it.
Ok I guess I have to be a bit more clear I'm reffering to HC on view and how the disabled hardware buttons and I was told we need kernel source in order to do this
Yes, if you visit http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads
You will see that only kernels for Gingerbread are released.
So no go on the buttons ? Life is so much easier with them

That's one reason I'm not going to apply the Honeycomb update to my Flyer. I like the touch buttons on the bezel and those would be lost if I apply the Honeycomb update. Gingerbread is running very well, I will just keep it at that for now.
HW buttons are the main reason why i went back to GB, you also lose screen real estate with HC. But the pen works everywhere on HC. But the main thing is you lose 1/2 inch of screen space for HC buttons.
Yeah HC is not bad and ability to use pen everywhere is great. But I do want the buttons back
Honestly I really don't mind the buttons being missing. I think its cool that HTC put 2 sets of them, and pretty much made they completly invisible when you aren't using them, but honeycomb doesn't need them so why should they be there?

Yeah it needs it. It would be much better with out the bar !
The bar is a bit annoying. I really figured google had come up with a way for the bar to not display when the whole screen was needed. Guess not. Fail.
Really its not hard to fix it either. Simply just make the bar appear when you hit the volume rocker. Hopefully ICS fixed this.
You can have the HW buttons on HC if you are rooted and are using a rom that alows you so. I hate the new bar, but it's a price i'm willing to pay to have the pen working everywhere.

its a good question, but when not in use, the buttons are almost invisible, so maybe they will just be switched off.
I hope though that HTC just keep them active and give us back some of that screen space which Honeycomb takes away for the controls.
Well, the promise was "soon after launch", I am guessing, that HTC gets Honeycomb versions before official launch, so they have probably been toying around with it for a while.
Regarding the buttons vs. screen space - there is a bit more features in the bar with the back/home/menu buttons on honeycomb, so i don't think it will be easy to take away. At the end it will come down to the way HTC will decide to implement Sense experience into Honeycomb experience.
Hopefully the Sense widgets will stay. Other than that, give me a new market, YouTube app and tablet app support and I'll we happy
It'd be nice if we could get a vanilla version before the sense version.. just to play with
hope the sense widgets stay and the bar down the screen can disappear
Started along my Android journey 2 weeks ago by selling my.iPhone 4 and buying a Motorola milestone 2 phone and now a HTC flyer 3g.
sorta got used to the hardware buttons on the flyer. will HC remove their functionality completely or is it likely to come back at some stage? does anyone know why they have been removed?
thanks
Hardware buttons are not able to be used in hc by Google's design. Will have to stick with GB or wait till ICS if you want them back.
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
thanks for the answer. what noticeable benefits with HC? I I might stay with GB as I really like the hardware buttons
Just flashed hc and really like so far, the os is much better for tablets, can also use the pen everywhere!
There is a bottom bar instead of hw buttons, and this is fine in portrait mode (which is best for flyer generally), but is more noticable in landscape. I haven't watched any vids yet to know how it affects those
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
Not likely they will be back in HC since they are redundant with the on screen system bar which cannot be removed. Use it for a few days and you will forget the hard buttons were even there.
Hardware buttons are removed from Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) as well so I doubt they will be back. Not sure if it is possible for a Developer to make them work on a custom ROM or not. I have been trying ICS on my Evo and my buttons work.

I guess what I meant to say was they are starting to move away from hardware buttons altogether.
I think ICS has built-in calls to hide the soft-buttons, HC does not. You won;t be seeing a full working ICS for the Flyer anytime soon though. Not until HTC releases a working ROM or a ICS on a HTC device that is close enough to port.
If HC on the Flyer does not use the capacitive buttons, it is not worth it for me losing about 10% of the display in landscape mode. I will not update and thanks for letting me know! Flyer works great already and a 7" tablet IMO is small enough without losing space.
As far as ICS, it has already been pointed out that OEMs can choose to use the capacitive buttons, if a device has them. Imagine the uproar from people with small phone displays if losing space to a nav bar.
Nexus does this, but has a bigger display, so the actual usable display size minus the fixed nav bar is a tad under 4.3". The buttons are only hidden in ICS during some types of video playback, but apparently nothing else. The bar is always there- just like HC.
Added: Since capacitive buttons can be used, I would expect them to be around longer, since cheaper to put capacitive buttons, rather than bigger displays: Also better on battery life.
You do not have to lose the space and get much more back in return

I'm trying to understand the negative view on the Honeycomb bar. It replaces the system bar, which we have at the top of the screen now, so we don't loose much, right? Perhaps a few more pixels, but...that's it, right?
I do like the hardware buttons, but its not like we're going from no status bar to a huge one; we're going from a smaller one to a slightly larger one with more functionality.
Or am I missing something?
Your not missing anything people are making something out of nearly nothing and are ignoring the drastic user interface improvements. The only time I use honeybar to remove honeycomb bar is if watching videos. Now if I wanted to use my flyer as a phone. That is a different story
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
Not seeing how it is something out of nothing, since you lose more than 10% of display space in landscape mode- it is taken by the nav bar. The same one on my Thrive, except it is a 10" display, so not as bad.
Before updating, check out the Acer 7" and see if you like it. I found it cramp and appreciate the extra display space on the Flyer with GB. ICS can use the capacitive buttons and not use the nav bar, but HC can not.
All up to choice. I choose to not have a smaller display on an already small 7" tablet, since the Flyer already has nav buttons. Eveybody else can knock themselves out and enjoy HC Added: As far as rooting to get a work around, my Flyer works great as is, so not risking the root process- Flyer rocks.

I wish that were the case than you are right- no problem. Thing is the bars in GB go away when playing a game, surfing (if you choose to) or watching a movie. The bar does NOT go away with HC. The buttons darken, but the big bar is still there and over 10% of the display is gone for good.
Incorrect if you use honeybar

But need to be rooted to use it. If simple like the Incredible, Droid 3 and Razr, no problem, but the process seems too risky when the Flyer already performs great for me. No need to rock the boat and no need to lose display space to a nav bar.

I guess when full-screen is no longer really full-screen, I get it. Thanks for the info. I am looking forward to Honeycomb, though...
I might as well whine in here too....
I really really really want at least one hardware (physical) button on the front of device. I don't get it why all manufacturers decided that there is no real need for it. Take the damn ipad for example: that thing is easy to turn on with the front button. I used to have old android phone with Green and Red phone buttons and it was so comfortable to turn on the phone using them. When I upgraded to Galaxy S, man I have missed those... got used to power button with time because device is small. With flyer and other tablets it is a bit different story. It lays on my desk and I have to use two hands to turn on the damn thing. One hand to hold the device, another to push the power button. It is a small thing, but it is quite uncomfortable.
Back to the topic... For those in doubt.. HC upgrade is worth it. You're not loosing much, but overall HC is better IMHO.
Does anybody know a good task manager/killer for HC that maybe integrates with multitasking preview (I know that I'm not supposed to use it... blah...blah...blah...)?
You can use any of the 10 or so task killers on the market, they will all work just as poorly as any for HC. As you have pointed out, not needed and will adversely affect your performance / battery if you try to automate it.
If your device is on the desk, plugged in, just set the display to never time out and you never need to turn it back on....
I really want to run HC on my View. Why? Better pen input options. Other than that not much. So what bugs the hell out of me every time I run HC so that I find myself flashing back to GB?
I finally figured it out. It's the screen colors. Under HC, the View's screen colors all look flat and washed out. Like the Gamma is turned way down or something. Blacks aren't very black, reds aren't very red. So I flash back to GB and boom, the screen pops!
Anyone else notice this and suggest some workarounds?
The only reasoning I would have is that honeycomb was designed to be styled in a matte style. But now that I think of it its true colors do pop a lot more on gb. Maybe its because HTC hasn't had much time to work with honeycomb as much as they have with gb and before. But it looks like sense 4 has all those popping colors you are referring too.

Please explain. I haven't (yet) upgraded. I've read about HC w/no folders, broken GPS and wifi issues (the wifi seems easy enough to fix)... so I've decided to not upgrade.
Everything as it is in GB2.3.4, works for me. Stock Sense ROM - alternating w/Go Launcher (5 x 5 grid)... I've rooted, and have S-Off... running all the su apps I care to, and have uninstalled some bloatware - so it's solid & functional as is.
What's more functional in HC? I'd love to upgrade but haven't found a reason... or a perfectly running custom ROM where it all works better. Fill me in...
pen is more functional, apparently. and i use mine all the time.

Yes, of course, the pen adds tremendous functionality (didn't mean to overlook that aspect), but it's a function I don't need. I understand the value of that enhancement. Aside from the pen...
The View and the Flyer are similar but different and maybe the aforementioned issues have more to do with the latter...

same here no problems at all.
I've got a WiFi Flyer and do like HC on it better than GB. Just like the interface better and the ability to run more pen enabled apps. I'm not on stock but a custom HC rom w/custom launcher. No Wifi issues whatsoever but GPS is problematic. It will lock in and lose the lock then re-lock. As far as I know this is with any HC rom on the Flyer except maybe the official OTA. However, since mine is WiFi only and Google apps need data + gps to work, I have never found a use for GPS so doesn't bother me at all. I could tether it to my phone but would make no sense considering I can just use my phone for navigation.
I'm so frustrated, ive had the prime for over a month and love 99% of it EXCEPT the fact that the black bar at the bottom is constantly there. The buttons dim, but the bar does not. 500$ for a 10.1 screen, and you cannot actually use all 10.1? Irritating! I have the galaxy nexus phone which is also on ics and while watching videos, the bar disappears, and when you touch in that area it returns. Why in the world is this like this with the prime...not the iPad? And how is there not a way to make this happen without a hack (which i don't have a clue about) and possibly screwing up the tab? An inch may not seem like much but to me it is. Why promote a 10.1 screen when you cannot use all 10.1 inches? I should feel like im watchin all videos in "widescreen" on a 10.1 inch screen!
So is there a fix for this? Ive tried every media player, none do it!

You are not able to do it stock inside of android. There's a mod over in the Xoom forum that allows you to toggle it via an installed "app." There is probably a way to port it over to the Transformer Prime (especially since the mod was for the Team EOS rom on the Xoom, and that was just announced for this device today).
This is a racist thread.

This is the link to the thread about the mod for the XOOM. Don't flash this on your device obviously. But if you can find someone else who would be able to modify for the Prime, or message the OP for that thread, then we could get it to work on here. If not, there's no way to remove the navigation bar with a simple app like we could in Honeycomb. This method requires modifying the system to stop the process for the bar and then start it again when you open the apk.

Well, when you pay $500 for a 10.1 inch tablet and you cannot view the entire screen....it is a big deal, inch or not. The IPAD doesn't do that, my galaxy nexus's status bar hides when video is playing and all you have to do is touch at the bottom and it pops up. Not sure why I would want t "widescreen" experience on a 10.1 inch screen.
The iPad does not do that because it has a physical home button, so if you would like that feel free to buy one. If you are looking to remove it, run AOKP ROM. It allows you to use the power menu to toggle the taskbar on and off, thus allowing you to use the full screen.

The update is a bit okay with me. it has toggles in the notification bars for shortcut unlike the old one. Sony just unified the android 4.2.2 experience. hopefully there will be no new bugs comes with the new update.
It makes little sense to update. 4.1.2 works great, while 4.2.2 only brings ****ty phablet UI, removes SmallApps shortcut and seems to impact streaming negatively.
Not looking forward to the loss of additional pixel rows to the second new phablet bar at the top. However I'm definitely not planning to stay at a specific ancient version longer than I have to so I might as well get used to it. If it annoys me too much I'll go scout for unofficial UI patches or roms to remove it.
But why do you want to go away from the so-called "ancient" version?
It does all what one wants, and it does it fast and stable!
Or what do you miss? (Only thing I can understand is when LTE version users want to update because they finally get the exFAT support... although with some research there are other possibilities to get files >4GB on the microSD...)
Sometimes people dismiss something only because it's supposed as "old". I think this is - at least in this case - BS.

But it doesn't, IMHO. It may do all *you* want it to do, sure. But different people have different priorities and desires.
The old version is not receiving any (official) security patches and the new versions are introducing stuff I personally look forward to. Stuff like a modular lockscreen, multiuser functions and later on the priceless possibility to revoke individual app permissions in 4.3+.
No doubt it'll introduce as many new bugs and break old stuff. Everyone has to evaluate for himself if the good outweighs the bad. And if the balance just can't be met, there may still be other ways forward in the form of customized ROMs.
Some people will definitely make the wrong decision at first, realize it and go back. Thankfully they can, with some effort.
I'm not saying that staying at an old version is a bad thing. If you see the full picture of what you're missing (or not missing!) then it's a legit decision to make for yourself.
I am just wondering ... why have they decided to put the navigation buttons in the worst possible place? ...placing them in the middle instead of near the corners means I have to stretch my thumb a lot to press the Back button when using my tablet in landscape mode (which is 99% of the time).
The same happened at the notification bar at the top.
It just seems like they decided to just have one UI, and then just didn't care that the new UI seems very unwieldy to people with a large tablet. And the is coming from a guy with pretty long fingers.
I am not thinking that turning my tablet into a mobile is the way forward. Quite disappointed with that part of the new update, and I just know it will annoy the heck out of me.
It's a google thing .. From 4.2.2 there is no tablet UI
It's a shame about The UI. But I guess it's something you need to get used to. Can't seem to See The logic in that decision. It forces user to operate their tablet one handed. Not terribly well for 10" tabs. Unless it is one as light as XTZ.
Sent from my Xperia Tablet Z using XDA Premium HD
Because the Tablet Z is so light, I just hold it in my left hand and use my right hand for screen touches & typing. So for me having buttons in the middle of the bottom bar is easier and more consistent with my phone.
If you use a launcher like Nova you can hide the top status/notification bar and use gestures to show it (as I do).
In addition to this, now that I'm on CM 10.2 I'm using Pie, so I have no visible navigation bar as well.
Guys, the problem with the >=4.2 layout is not how you can reach best for the soft keys.
The problem is the incredible waste of screen estate by having two bars and one of them (the fatter one at that) being mostly just black with 3 tiny buttons in the middle.

While it may be a AOSP thing that doesn't mean it has to be a Sony thing, each OEM makes their own version of Android and can change pretty much any thing they want to about it. For me, holding the tablet in one hand is a no-go. Even though it is light, I would not want to handle it like my phone. It gets heavy after a while. I hold it like a book, at the edges in landscape mode. Now I (almost) can't reach the navigation buttons.
Also I have the 4G version, and the navigation pane can't even properly show the line with the service provider's name.
If they wanted to be lazy, they could just have gone full Google-experience. This seems just half-assed.
