Significant Radio Issue after upgrade to 181 - US Razr Maxx - Motorola Droid RAZR

Please post if you have the same issue.
Or please help me to resolve this issue.
Model: Completely stock non-rooted Razr Maxx from Verizon.
Upgrade was from 173 to 181. Happened today. Entire process was fine.
After the upgrade:
The 4G sign appeared very briefly and then disappear, and then it stuck at 3G.
My guess: so-called 4G authentication failed. So it switched to 3G by default.
Then as a result, now the phone spend all time in 3G. everything is slow.
note: I am sitting at the exact place (my office desk). same time frame.
I don't believe there is a structural change in my building or desk happened coincident with my 181 upgrade.
Thanks for any insights.
I have performed. "pull sim-card" but it did not work.

Try factory reset?

Try Motorola's 4g connectivity app.

I got the RAZR and the radios seem like they connect worse. If these are the supposedly great radios from Motorola then I'm not impressed.
Edit: and I have Motorola's restore connectivity app.

I have absolutely terrible signal strength and numerous data drops, especially when tethering from the stock vzw hotspot app. Flashing back to 173 as I type this. And I've been running 181 since the soak started.
Not happy at all.

I downloaded the 181 update last night and have also had a bunch of data drops today. I thought it was Juice Defender so I uninstalled it but Ive still been getting them. Ill stick it out a few more days and see how it goes

Odd, maybe it's just my area but I was pulling down 30+mbs down earlier today. No data drops either.
Been about 24 hours since I installed the update.

No problems here, i've been getting better dBm readings since the update. I'm wondering if maybe it was just one of those days for the 4G network...
As a side note, not only have my dBm readings been better, my ping/download/upload speeds are faster.

I think it happens to the areas that are "on the edge". Previously it was still tried to hanging on 4G, but now it just directly went to 3G or ... worse .. dropped and they called it "accurately reflect the signal strength" as a feature.
TO ADD ONE MORE:
This morning my Razr Maxx rebooted for no reason.
Good job Moto/Verizon. I don't know which one to thank to.
This is the first time since I bought it a few month ago.
Never rooted. Only be a normal user without any tweak.

Things I've noticed:
Positive:
1 - Fewer reboots/"sleeps of death" after the update, though they were infrequent on the previous update. (took me a minute the first time to figure out how to perform a hard reset on a phone with no removable battery)
2 - Screen doesn't seem to stay ON on its own anymore, I don't run into cycles where I have to fight it to get the screen to stay off.
Negative:
3 - Data Link does drop more frequently in "fringe" areas (I was traveling with the update and dropped data link numerous times despite it saying 3G/4G, dropped to 1x a few times but on the interstate this is expected), but it appears to be faster when it's locked on.
Neutral:
3 - Slow down / catch up when typing on keyboard in stock browser. Same as before for me.
I upgraded via OTA from the stock, rooted. Just rooted this version today.

[Q] Mobile Data Drop - Not Suspect To Outage

In the past two weeks, my mobile data has been down. I don't believe it to be an outage in my area due to the duration of the problem, and the inconsistency with other Verizon Wireless phones. I was running Juice Defender for a while, and every now and then I would notice that the Mobile Network would drop. Toggling the Mobile Network would not fix the problem, either. I usually cleaned out my cached data for the Juice Defender app, turned the app off, then toggled airplane mode once. (Sometimes just toggling Airplane Mode wouldn't fix it, therefore I had to clear the cache for the app.) Now this fails to work. I cannot get my mobile network to connect by any conventional means. When I receive MMS messages, my network will connect long enough to download the attachment. Also when I do a search for a Software Update, it connects just long enough to tell me there aren't any updates for my phone. I've tried updating my PRL with *228 and I've even tried *18 from a post over at Droid Forums. Neither work. I've removed the battery and SIM Card as suggested in some other threads here at XDA. I've also removed the Juice Defender app.
The phone is not rooted and has never been rooted with the Temp Root methods. I'm not opposed to rooting, but if I root, I'm gonna perm root and I would rather not have to factory reset my phone if I don't have to right now. I'm mainly posting this because I cannot find anyone online with the same issue that I am having. Any help would be appreciated. Personally, I think its an issue with Dalvik-VM. I can attach a copy of my LogCat if needed. Any ideas on my issue? Thanks in advance!
Check your power settings, if you are in economy mode it will mess with your data connection.
I have a paid version of JuiceDefender, it has caused me so many problems I don't even bother to install it anymore.

I also have the same issue, tried a couple basebands and could not fix it. I ended up not using it...
Every once in a while my mobile network or just lte somehow gets turned off and I have to turn it back on, but that's rare.
I tried juIce Defender and also had problems losing my connection so I uninstalled it. Plus the settings were so confusing to me. I'm using Green Power now and that seems fine.
You didn't mention mhs so I assume you're not using it but that has known connection issues.

Did you ever try doing a factory reset? I'm curious to know if that will fix it.

Juice Defender gave me fits, too. I'm not using my phone as a Mobile Hotspot, either.
I kinda think its my ROM. I'll play around with some stuff, or I'll just get around to doing a factory reset and see if that fixes the problem. I'll post any solutions here for others.
Are you in a good 4g area? If you scroll down the general section here, you will find my topic. If you use 3g more than 4g, there is a post in that thread about##778#. It helped me. Sorry if it doesn't help you, Cheers.

I just wanted to let you know that I'm having this problem as well. I AM rooted and running CleanRom, but my daughter has a non rooted Bionic, and both of us suffered a complete loss of data today. My husband's rooted Rezound is fine.
I took my phone into Verizon today, and after initially just trying to swap out the phone (which I wouldn't allow them to do, it took me too long to get my phone the way I want it), they finally switched out the 4G sim card, and the data came back instantly.
When my daughter leaves school today, she will get her 4G card swapped out as well, and we'll see if it is in fact a network connectivity problem.
It seems to me that our 4G phones has a lot of trouble switching from wifi to 3G/4G service.

I will +1 this. My work WiFi is spotty, and so the phone falls in and out of WiFi. The Rezound HATES that and usually leaves me with no connectivity. There is definitely a WiFi->Mobile Network issue.
Try doing a factory reset. Could be a bad device... Im getting amazing reception on mine. I havent even seen my 3G or 1x icons yet. Constant 4G lock.
Forget what I said, my data connection has been dropped again for the past thirty minutes and there's no way for me to get it back.
I'm going to try a factory reset. I *really* don't want to have to send my phone back because my husband is getting amazing coverage on his Rezound. However, we're still in the first week of our Verizon contract, and if this looks like it will be a standing issue, then we'll have to cancel and go crawling back to horrible Sprint.

I think I'm going to try doing this. How painful was it for you to convince them to give you another SIM Card?
Edit: Just read your last post. Please let me know what a factory reset does for you.
They had no issues at all swapping out my 4G card, they certainly couldn't let me walk out of the store with no signal. They knew they had to try something.
The factory reset on the phone appeared to work. I've been steadily switching it from wifi to data, and the data signal picks up, albeit a tad bit slow. Only thing is, I still don't really get 4g, while my husband's Rezound has a great signal.
I got insurance on the phone, so I'll put up with it as long as I can before I start screaming at Verizon.
Good to hear. I'm going to try to switch out my SIM card today and see if that fixes it. I thought maybe it was something with the ROM, seeing as how my 3G will turn on whenever I need to send an MMS message, so a factory reset made sense to me. I just don't want to do it. Lol. Thanks for the info!
I've experienced it twice in the last 24hrs and it just happened to be right after I installed and used LTE OnOff. Don't know if there might be a connection there. I keep forgetting this phone has the ability to switch 4g/3G unlike the TBolt. Needless to say, that app is no longer on the phone.
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.
I had an issue with the mobile network just dropping in and out (other people in the room did not lose signal). We currently don't have 4G and it is 3G only. I did a factory reset of the phone, but it continued to occur. Took the phone back to Verizon store to exchange it (it was 1 week old). At first they weren't going to and gave me a run around but in the end exchanged it. Have had no problems with new phone.
My girlfriend's Bionic keeps dropping 4G more frequently than my Rezound. I get this problem too though. Usually a toggle of Airplane Mode fixes it...but it's pretty damn annoying. Happens once or twice a day!
A Factory Reset fixed it. Everything went smoothly, too. I backed up all my SMS Messages with HTC's Messaging app, and got my network back as soon as I restored it and set everything back up. Hopefully this will help anyone else who might have had the same problem.
I've been side by side with a fresh Rezound and watched both of them jump from 4g to 1x to 3g and sometimes never 3g. The problems were a million times worse with my droid charge as it's a combination of the handsets and the towers.

Hmmm
I have this happen if I am in an area with NO signal (such as the basement level of my office building) for long time. Only a reboot will bring back data. Does not happen often (maybe 2ce in a month and a half).
I am intrigued by the person who blames the install of LTEOnOff. I have it installed but do not use it. Maybe if I ever have to hard reset (such as if ever run the unlock), I will not reinstall that program.

Dropping data

Just got my Razr yesterday. YAAAY!!
I'm coming from a Droid Charge and am excited about the big step forward with the Razr. One problem I'm having, thought, is that i'm losing my data connection quite often. I was under the impression that this phone would be better at holding a signal than my Charge was, but so far its quite a bit worse.
I'm noticing that when the connection is good, the 4G icon turns blue. Then I will see it turn white, then disappear altogether. Usually a reboot fixes it for a while. Anybody else seeing this behavior?
Thanks,
Blue

No 4g in my area so I cannot verify that part but in the 28 hours I have owned my Razr it has dropped data 5 times. Toggling airplane mode seems to correct this issue but, coming from a DX that only dropped data a handful of time in a year and a half, this is a little disheartening.
That happened to me a lot a month ago... would drop data like no tomorrow ... Arctic rom fixed most of the problems...
I still have random drops where I should get data (s2 catches it fine)...
But I'm assuming until they release an updated radio... wont see any fixes
I haven't had dropped data since I've had my phone its been almost a month. I'm only on 3g.

I get the same problem. Especially when I tether (Legally). Its to the point Im trying to get rid of the Razr. Solid built phone but from the locked bootloader to the data issues I think it might be time for me to move on.
I have yet to have this problem in my area (only 3g) but in the city about an hour away I did drop data while using 4G. While at home I also keep it in 3g only.

I have had very similar issues. I am in a decent 4g area and have had my razor for a week now and am thinking about returning it. Its happened on both 3g and 4g. I had a rezound prior to this and never had issues like this with data dropping. I returned the rezound due to overheating and random boot looping. Not sure what to get. May look into Droid 4 but wondering about Moto. Now.

As a person working in the telecom industry with LTE, the data drops that you mentioned happens only if the device is idle for a certain period (10 seconds) and there are more users in that cell than what it can handle..
One Cell right now can handle max 200 Connected users..if your operator is using older versions then it can be 20 even.....
The typical timeout value is set as 10 seconds..that is if the mobile unit does not do any activity , then the connection will be dropped off....
You need to remember that 4G or LTE is not like 3G which enables you to stay connected always..it is only meant for data applications and it is strictly on-demand....at least now, till Voice Over Generic LTE Access (VOLGA) is rolled out.....
Some device manufacturers mimic the presence of 4G, but displaying the LTE/4G symbol, even if it is not connected to the network. It shows the presence of the radio only......
---------- Post added at 12:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:27 PM ----------
Actually while analyzing one major issue during a football match in US, we found out that there is too many connected users and very less amount of data....
This is not a very good implementation by Mobile Phone companies and they need to change the algo... Moto I hope has done a better job...
I got brave and jumped into the future...
4G is rocking and rolling now, and no data-drop outs all day. OTA should be coming soon.
Same for me yesterday. I am likeing At&T/s2 better and better with just about every thing. I am past my 14days, but as soon as someing comes out with unlimited LTE and Is better or as good as my s2 I will get rid of this nightmare of a phone and maybe even the big red.
P.S I know the big red has a lot of fan's like apple does, but it is what it is.
Try updating to 2.3.6, here, this has helped a lot with the updated software and radio it included. I have also experienced very good battery life.
This is a leaked update but does offer needed improvements. However, unlike the Bionic the razr able to fastboot back to factory stock and then accept OTA upgrades. So when something official, or ICS comes out no need to worry with the bootloader being locked.
Just started dropping data I think I might try the leaked update.

Data drops after updates

anyone noticed or had trouble
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
Not a data loss issue but:
I haven't had a problem with my razr since the update, but after my wifes update, her razr will turn off wifi now and then if the phone sleeps too long. Sometimes within 10 minutes. It happens more times than not.
On .748 my Razr was always locked on strong with 4G on.
W/ .173 I've been having nothing but complete data drops even though it still shows 4G and I'm in 3G in places where I had a strong 4G on 748
Does data drop mean losing 4G and then wait for a minute and then comes back. That's what I've been getting lately. It doesn't even switch to 3G. I never had that problem with my TB sigh
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA Premium App
Yeah I too experienced data drops. But once I switch between 2g and 3g networks there are no drops for sometime.
Sent from my RazR using XDA premium
I've started having several after update. Hopefully Verizon will drop an update soon. Surely with this many of us having this issue, has to be a known issue.
While I haven't had any data drops since the update, I have noticed I have a much weaker signal. I was under the impression this update was supposed to reverse that.
For me it fixed the day by day data droping. You may need to reset the phone.
P.S I hope it gets fixed soon and I know all to well how much of a pain it is.

didnt want to start a new thread, but my phone after the latest update keeps dropping data and im fed up with it. this is the third razr ive had. one for hardware, one for a couple areas of dead pixels or groups of pixels, now my phone wont stay connected to data, just randomly dropping data and then picking it back up. ive had to call customer support three times for it, this time i had to boot it into safe mode, and now get to play the waiting game. ive heard people on here rave about the motorola antennas, but ive yet to be impressed. As far as i can tell thisphone is a complete peace of crap. And verizon support hasnt done anything to fix it. I used to rave about verizons technical support, now it feels like they dont care. After my contract is up bye bye verizon. Bye bye motorola. I would cancel right now and just use my vita with skype as a phone, but i got apps i would miss. Ive had palm pres that have had way better hardware design and build quality then this piece of ****.
I've had four LTE phones now and the data issues existed on all of them but have gotten less noticeable with each passing month (the Droid Charge was a nightmare until the day I got rid of it, though). People treating it as a phone issue cost warranty support money and wastes time- what you need is a network technician, not a refurbished phone.

At this point i need a new phone. Ive installed the useless restore connectivity app, tried removing and reinstalling my sim card, and now im running it in safe mode, all verizon ideas from customer support, and except for safe mode cuz ive not had the time, have failed. Im running bone stock non root and cant get anywhere with technicians. As ive said, my phone drops data and then a minute later picks it back up. The latest customer support person thought itmight be a roamong issue, evn though it happens when im not moving, as far as i can tell.
First, what's your signal strength? Anything under ~-95dBm isn't enough to maintain a reliable LTE connection. It'll connect but it will occasionally lose it. This tends to waste battery, as well. When they started rolling out LTE I was on the fringe of the coverage area, but they've updated a few of their towers since then. I will still lose data when driving through certain parts of town, but it reconnects quickly.
As far as the roaming issues go, that's a simple one to rule out. Call back and ask what your PRL should be. If it doesn't match the one in your About screen in Settings, turn the phone off, pull the SIM, power on, and shut down and put it back in- it should update. Doesn't make much of a difference in most circumstances, and the phone is supposed to update it automatically on every boot, but it's worth a try.
If you really just want a replacement phone without any more tech support BS, tell them the phone is overheating and rebooting. They'll tell you to take it into the store, where they will check for water damage and then order you a new phone without any further questions. You could also request to be transferred to Tier 2-- they're the ones that know what they're talking about (generally).
Also, if you have the same issue with 3 different phones, it's policy to offer you a switch to a different model (or an early upgrade, depending on what your contract dates look like) under most circumstances. I will tell you that whatever issues you've been having, if you want a 4G phone, there is no better current combination than Motorola and Verizon. I've seen the alternatives and they're not pretty.
its at 85 in my living room with three bars of data. If it was low coverage it should; especially after the last update; be almost no bars at all and just dropdown to 3g service instead of dropping all data.

I have seldom found that to be true, strangely. Mine will try re-authenticating on 4G two or three times before deciding 3G is better- then it will still toggle back and forth, and every time it switches from 4G to 3G it loses connection for a few seconds. It's an issue with the network architecture more than anything else- eHRPD is a stopgap solution and hopefully will be phased out soon, as LTE becomes universal and LTE-Advanced enters the picture.
oh ok.

same here. If i could activate a pallm pre 3 on verizon id be using that right now. But asit stands, the data speeds are nice, but arent worth it compared to constantly loosing data or all the network troubles verizons had activating there network. Though those are probably from there blazingly fast rollout rather then hardware on there end.

my second had two dead pixels this one has one but during normal opperation isnt noticable. though im ready to try and trade this for a galaxy nexus or cancel my contrqct and buy one straight from google. the main reason i bought this phone over the gnex was the sd card and thinking that it would be upgraded to ics rather quickly. fhe screen resolution and size are non issues for me. at this point there really isnt a lot to distinguish the screens unless you are a real power user, most wouldnt know that the razr has a lower pixel count and density.

.215- Is everyone getting better 4G except me?

I've been running the .215 update now for about a week and a half, but it seems i'm either on 3G where I used to get 4G, or no data at all. For example, shopping with the wife at a mall where I usually sit and wait for her, I always got a good 4G signal. Yesterday I barely got a 3G connection for about 2 minutes then all my data connections went white. Just out of curiosity I put it in airplane mode then turned it back on and a strong 4G connection came on.
BTW, she has an iphone 4s using Kik for messaging which requires a data connection. Hers worked. Mine didn't. I felt pretty foolish as I'm always telling her my phone can do everything her phone can, only better.

I know it's not 4G. That's why it makes me mad when I used to have full 4G on my RAZR.. in the same spot. now I can barely cling on to a 3g with data drops all the time. Meanwhile she's on hers all the time with a good connection.
I flashed the official .211 update. Rooted with Matt's utility. Used voodoo OTA rootkeeper. Updated to. 215. Other than that haven't changed anything. Still stock recovery.

I am stock rooted on .215 and I couldn't be happier. My battery has lasted an average of 1 day 20 hours and my 4G is stronger than ever. The 3G/4G/WiFi handoff is seamless and the phone is much snappier overall. Try going back to stock .211 and reloading .215.....Use Matt's Utility 1.81 to roll back to .211
I have been running the .215, my wife same phone, no hacks and she never drops 4 g. I am always either 1 bar 4g or 3 bars 3g. frustrating. I use to have really good 4 g till i started to mess with roms and rooting, now i cant seem to get it back good. I have switched out my 4g sim card, no change though. 4g sucks for me now as well. my battery life rocks though.
Think I might try fast booting back to .211 stock then re rooting. How do I fastboot? Never done this with this phone. Used RSD with the OG DROID. Or is matts utility the only way?
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.

I'm running stock rooted .215 as well. For me signal strength is about the same as .211. I live in the greater Philadelphia area which is a strong 4G area but I've always had weak signal strength in my office and my TV room. I was hoping to see some benefit in those areas after going to .215 but it's about the same. Not complaining - just didn't see any notable change for me between the two radios.
Battery life is really good - I have a Maxx and I'm running a bunch of Smart Actions that control my data and sync in different situations that's resulting in what feels like extended battery life. Only caveat to that is it was after going to .215 that I started fooling with Smart Actions so it's hard to say where the extended life is coming from: the kernel or S/A helping manage things.
