Advice wanted: display issues - HTC Rezound

Hi,
Strangely, I have a discolored streak on my display on the bottom-left corner. I wonder if it is water damage or something? The phone is CLN that replaced my Droid Charge.
To my dismay, I found two very noticeable spots of debris/gunk/goo/something under the display glass on the very left-hand side of the Rezound near the USB port.
Smacking the phone and an air compressor both had no effect.
My original phone was the Droid Charge. The Rezound is a CLN replacement for call issues that the Charge had. It will be one year from the purchase of the Charge in about two weeks.
I should still be under warranty for the first year. I also do have the $7 insurance.
I don't think I would be able to do anything about the streak, and in order to get the gunk off the glass, I would have to take the display apart.
Is display disassembly feasible?
I am currently S-ON, unlocked with htcdev, and on stock firmware. I definitely don't want to raise any eyebrows at VZW, what would you guys do?
I could live with it if people are commonly getting dust under the display and it is likely to happen to a new phone anyways.
Thanks

That's pretty bad man.. I would go into the store or just call into 611 and demand another replacement. My Rezound doesn't have any streaks or debris under the screen. The only phones I've experienced that with were devices that were sealed poorly ie. Thunderbolt, and pretty much every motorola phone I've owned except the RAZR. As for dust accumlation under the screen over time I've never had that happen either. If it is sealed properly dust should never accumlate under the screen. I think the smudge was from the techs just slapping the device back together hastily. Seems to be a trend with certain CLNRs.

I suppose that's the way the dice roll. Balls.
I know this has been asked multiple times before, but what is the best way to go about this?
I am currently:
Stock firmware
HTCdev unlock
CleanROM Kang Tapped /w firmware patch
Amon Ra 3.15
Is it possible to set the bootloader to locked instead of re-locked if I S-off first? Does it matter?
Should I try the store or call center? If I go to the store, can I just nag them until they present a phone with good quality display and red backlight buttons?
What would you guys do if you were me? I absolutely want to do it the proper way, we don't want the carriers/manufacturers trying to lock us out of the devices any more than they do.
Lastly, does anybody else think that returning to stock needs a sticky? If I am overlooking something, feel free to flame.

Ya, but since I'm under warranty, theoretically, as it replaced my Droid Charge which was activated less than a year ago, I would be able to save $100. Also, I don't really want to turn something into insurance that is unlocked.

S-off then run the gb ruu don't unlock and it will say locked and be just like new

Wow, I didn't realize it would be that easy (sort-of, gotta grow some balls to do the s-off.)
What is the easiest way to get a sticky for returning to stock?
Lastly, does anybody have a preference regarding going into the store vs calling customer service?

You don't need balls to get s-off as they can't bridge the two contacts, just an insulated paper clip
Second over the phone. I was on the phone with Verizon all of 15 mins when I for my refurb and part of that was me talking football with the CSR.

Got a brick? I'll buy the motherboard / charging port (USB)...

This thread explains why I need one.
Anyone got a Vibrant laying around doing nothing? I need a motherboard or charging port.
Can someone confirm this will work? At the very least, I could rip the charging port (USB) out of it... I doubt the motherboard would work.
where are all of those "I bricked my phone" threads when you need them??
If you are still looking to get one. I could use one too. Just let me know how much and ill send you the cash.

Phone is now off to Samsung. Once I hear back that they wont repair it, someone offered to sell me one for $10.
If it comes to that, I may solicit help on the soldering it to the motherboard. I can solder, but I have never done small electronics.
Dude ill buy 20 mobos if someone can get my babys pics off mine. Those r priceless to me plus I could keep themeing vibrant lol.
Samsung wanted 200per device, which I have 2, to fix mine because the so called gorrila glass is cracked on one of them......Hows that for customer service on a discontinued device?

I don't mind helping. I've got numerous tools at work at my disposal, including microscopes to make sure the job is done right.

I need to go back and read your thread I guess... how is a cracked screen preventing you from getting your babies pics man? I am ubber confused by that.
Its not the cracked screen. Ive got 2 vibes. My wifes just crapped out alll of a sudden running stock. Mine had the cracked screen but it dont affect performance. Its been like that since I dropped "gorrilla glass" in the grass a week after I got mine a year ago. Idk wtf happend to hers she made a call on stock and it goes to the vibe bootload screen then dies. I got it into recovery once but ir died before I can save drives. (less then 20 secs).
Samsung says its because its been dropped and wants roughly 200 each to fix my issues even though ones bone stock that turned into a paperweight....
Sent from my Precision Vibrant
wait... hers should EASILY be covered under warranty with Samsung. Assuming a july 15 purch, you should still have until Oct.
Are you saying T-Mo was saying "no," or samsung. If the latter, that is complete BS and I need to get more clarification for how they justify it?
Can you pull the files in the 20 seconds with ADB in bursts?
EDIT.. TWEET SENT

Phone itself still runs fabulously, minus the main screen haha. Soft LED buttons also work.
Above picture is the aftermath of being ran over by forsure atleast 1 car, but possibly 3.
About a month ago, I attempted to disassemble it & screen swap with a bricked donor to some success. Runs & displays with the donor screen, but I think i ****ed up a couple fuse contact points because random seizure lines strobe once in awhile.
Anywho, it's dissambled into 3 different parts atm: Motherboard, Digitizer/AMOLED pane, and the main shell.
@thehandi,
Have you tried android screencast. Before the gingerbread bootloaders we were using it to see recovery through the rainbows. It will show what should be in your screen. And you can use your mouse to navigate your phone

Cracked case around speakers

it started cracking (from what i noticed) like, last week
yesterday, it's totally broken off
anyone else have a DIY fix? superglue i'm thinking
****sux because i had the touchpad inside the official case day 1 AND it doesnt get moved around often nor does it see heavy usage
i have a theory that the case actually helps increase the chances of the cracks because any vibration/pressure is transmitted somewhat equally around the touchpad so even if the speaker side was not touched, any other force small or big goes speaker side and will eventually crack
Why don't u contact HP Support? They will replace the case!
I have the same problem that you are having. I have my touchpad for about a week or so and it cracked between both speakers it really sucks. So what I did was used super glue to fix the problem it might not look the best it works for now. Its nice to find out that its just not me having these problems but it really sucks.
Sent from my GT-i9100 using xda premium
ya I know about the customer support replace, just wanted to get opinions on superglue approach before then because I'm sorta scared that my touchpad will get replace with a diff one or the screen gets scratched etc
if the super glue works I'll just do that
Don't do the superglue, I really regret doing it myself, it's not clear and is very ugly, i need to find a way to get it off before i can send it in.
I'm thinking of getting mine repaired and then getting it wrapped in ghost armor.
The armor works great...

I didnt have "Cracks" but I have the ripple effect on the small plastic part like it was going to crack.
wondering about the superglue method myself (i have cracks on both speakers). does it melt the plastic cover?
I have cracks on my TP as well. It's a hardware defect, much like the original Pre / usb door cracks. The plus side is that it will never spread to the screen, and it does not affect the performance (or looks if it's in a case).
I don't recommend sending it back for "repair" ... it's not worth it and you don't know if you'll get it back.
It works.
I just noticed cracks as well. I'm going to check out that ghost armor. Looks neat.
Sent from my Touchpad using xda premium
well the cracks around the speakers is cosmetic. Contact HP Support they will replace the casing.
I had the same issue with my TP. The customer support was good. They sent me a return box and label. All you have to do is to pack your TP as per instructions and drop it at nearby UPS store. I received the repaired TP within a week.
Act fast before the warranty expires.
I just noticed a crack in mine. Called them and they are sending a box out. It's covered for a year they said.
10 have it back. I'm sad but will be happy to get new one and will have armor case ready and waiting for it.

Yea. HP is going to get my tablet back in a few days. I have to go drop it off. I wonder if they've fixed the problem and the new ones don't do it. I sure hope so.
I have dropped mine and its cracked on the corner and some of the plastic has come away. Does anyone know if replacement covers are available while searching about this? Cant seem to find one.
My TP has now developed a crack near the speakers! Spoke to HP who said there was a batch of TP`s who had a "bad" batch of plastic and the new plastic they use is better and should not crack!!
I have to send photo`s of the crack to their Argentinian office and then the TP gets sent from the UK to Hungary for repair (through UPS)
Hungary?? I think that is the first time I have read the word "Hungary" anywhere in months (do not spend a lot of time looking at maps of Eastern Europe).

[Solved] Screen replacement for Incredible 4G!

I just replaced my wife's screen tonight with minimal trouble. Here is the stuff you'll need.
This is a video tutorial (Not mine, but very good):
HTC Incredible 4G LTE Screen Replacement How To
You'll need all of the tools he shows in the video. I bought a kit at Radio Shack for $20 (spugger, tweezers, and various other tools) and a T5 screw driver kit at Home depot for $5 (Nice to have when I break another one)
I ordered my parts here:
Parts
There are several websites that gave me a lot of hassle, but this one was great. It ships from Hong Kong so give it a few days. There are 4 different choices from this website and some things to note:
**Most important: The digitizer cannot be separated from the LCD during replacement. You'll need to buy them already together. DO NOT buy them separately!**
(I splinted the whole thing to pieces removing it and trashed the LCD.)
1. B stock = blem models or slight defects. (I installed this and didn't notice anything wrong)
2. You'll notice with and w/o light shield. It's much easier to do this with the light shield already installed, but I did it without and the video is very detailed so I won't elaborate.
I know it's a different phone, but the concept is similar and might give you a general idea.

Tools Required:
Safe Open Pry Tool
Small Phillips Screwdriver
T6 Torx Screwdriver
Can I get these tools anywhere? (ie. Lowes, Home Depot) Are they pretty much standard for all phones. I guess what I'm asking is could I replace my buddies iPhone screen with the same tools?

Yes, those are pretty standard tools. You won't be able to get the pry tool from Lowes but the others you can. The pry tool will need to come from a computer/electronics store or online. Radio Shack might have it.
It might be easier for you to send it back to HTC for repair (their authorized repair facility) as they are more likely to have the correct parts. The parts will be harder to come by since it is such a new phone.

No clue about the cost. I would contact HTC and they should be able to let you know about both of those questions. I'm willing to bet that it would be at least a week of downtime.
My wife just dropped her Thunderbolt so I'm looking in to the same options myself.

I contacted HTC and you have to ship the device out to a company called Personal Communication Devices to have the screen repaired which takes about 2 weeks... Meanwhile you are w/o a phone. I called Verizon and they told me they wanted to sell me a certified preowned device. I've been down this road before... (See my signature of MT4G)
I asked Verizon if I could just have the screen fixed. She said I would be able to have a third party do it, but it would void my warranty. Isn't that the point of sending it to HTC? If they are already fixing it through a third party company doesn't that void my warranty as well?
I looked into buying a screen and doing it myself. **See OP EDIT** The screen I found isn't the right one.

First off thank you 2noob4U for the link I got all the parts i needed and they are perfect.
So I was separating the lcd and the digitizer on the droid incredible 4g lte and ran into a snag. When I was cleaning the middle plate I noticed that the 3 rubber pieces that fit around the light guides were missing...I must have drooped them while removing the remaining broken glass and adhesive. Are these rubber pieces critical to the function of the back and home buttons? If so does anyone know where to find replacements?

AT&T online warranty exchange is a RIP-OFF

So I dropped my Galaxy Note and it got a bruise on the corner and that plastic that surrounds the glass. The plastic that surrounds the glass broke off about the size of the character in the brackets (|)... because of this the microphone stopped working so i setup warranty exchange through AT&T and they sent me a new phone.
Well after I sent my old phone back to them they declared it has having physical damage and charged me $599!! I called them and told them in that case just send me my damaged phone back, they said they can't and I can't do anything about it either. They said I have my new phone and should be happy with it. I pointed out that I could have just sold my damaged phone on eBay for at least $200.00 and then got a brand new phone from eBay for less than $599.00 but instead I'm now OUT of the $200 I would've made from selling the damaged phone AND just ended up paying $600 for a "new" phone.. (which is most likely a refurbished).. man I am pissed. Had this ever happened to anyone? AT&T is ripping people off big time!

You're not entitled to return a phone broken. OP dropped the phone and damaged it. Careless damage = not AT&T's fault.
The OP I leaving out the part where they TELL YOU that there will be a $599 charge after they ask you MULTIPLE questions about physical damage on the phone...including the bezel and screen and such....
I work at&t and will be the first to defend a customer especially one from XDA but the OP is wrong in this case...

Yeah, the 14 day return only counts if the phone is in the same condition they sold it in. I was told this by a Rep so it may not be completely correct but this is just from personal experiences.

I work at&t and will be the first to defend a customer especially one from XDA but the OP is wrong in this case.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. After my post and the comment that followed I was wondering where you send a phone that did get broken from operator error?
Repairs are usually less than replacement.
Now....according to my insurance through ATT, although not from ATT directly, but offered by ATT, I have damage coverage to include water, drop, explosion, zombie world domination etc.
So am I to assume that my insurance is not going to help me ??
(gently setting my phone down on a pillow, in a climate controlled space)......g
ATT is great...got my GNote FREE!!!
Moral of the story....dont drop your phone...
(bigjoe telling wife to leave bed so, he may lay his GNote on her side of the King size Bed) Safety First, kiddoes....

I run into this at work ALL the time. The end consumer does something dumb, and damanges their product, brings it back expecting us to lose money and give them another for free.
If you want coverage, you pay for coverage. Use this as a life lesson that black tie is the way to go.

Warranty Exchange of Dead Phone if Screen Cracked?

So, I have a dead phone wth a cracked screen. Was running what is in my sig. No CWM.
NO INSURANCE.
It happened on my way to work, I suspect the battery was drained. I thought it was charging in the car but the charger was loose from the car adapter and I can't see it easily because of the way my car is made. So it rebooted itself - which it always did periodically - when I parked so I put it in my purse as I walked to my office. When I pulled it out it was stuck on the boot animation screen. So I pulled the battery and rebooted. It got to the HTC white screen and I think that's as far as it got then it died.
Have tried all the various battery pull / plug in / adb / power+vol down orders and nothing gets it going. There is absolutely no orange light showing up at all when it gets plugged in. I left it plugged into the wall overnight and still nothing.
Took battery to Verizon, they got it charging in another phone and said it read around 40-50% charged. (I had left the phone plugged in several hours at work to see if eventually something would happen.) So I don't think it's the battery since I'm pretty certain it was dead and now has a charge. Don't know if it was able to charge through my phone or not, but I doubt it was charged that high when all this happened and I'm sure it didn't get charged that much in the Verizon employee's phone.
Ordered a battery + charger from Amazon. Got the battery and tried that but no go. I don't know if the battery has any charge or not. When I get the charger I'm going to attempt to charge both batteries to 100% and hopefully one of them works. I've read several posts here about how it seems to be a matter of voodoo. Several people with the same symptoms just popped in a different battery and then it was fine.
So...
OPTION 1 - This all happened Monday, Aug. 6. Does anyone think there is any chance that if I show that I had the cracked screen before that and my phone was working fine that I can get a warranty replacement? I would think that they will blame it on my dropping it and will not give it to me but I'm wondering if anyone has been in this situation before. As of now I have not let Verizon know that my screen is cracked.
OPTION 2 - My other alternative was to fix the screen then try for the replacement and blame the ICS update. However, in the repair thread there is mention of little tabs that are not on the replacement and that the capacitive button lights are messed up because of that. So I don't think that will fly.
OPTION 3 - Buy a phone from someone. I found a listing claiming they can get Rezounds for $100 even if you're not eligible for an upgrade yet, that they can "get one". Is this most likely a scam? If not, I'll just go this route since I can also add insurance this time.
Also, if I did somehow manage to get a warranty replacement, does anyone know if I can then get insurance on that phone?
TIA for any advice.
:crying:

verizon is pretty strict on insurance. If you don't add it when you first get a new phone, they usually won't let you add it. You can always try online and see what happens.
I doubt they will warranty your phone with a cracked screen. They will send you a phone, but you will be charged on your account.
As far as the 100 dollar rezound, that sounds too good to be true.
i, and the other employees at my store, will not even waste our time trying to warranty a phone with any crack in the screen, even if there's a good explanation for it. you can warranty it if you want, but you'll see a $300 charge on your next bill because of that crack. no physical damage would ever be covered unfortunately, even if you have a really good story
Even if you can prove the crack was there before the issue it won't matter. The crack supersedes any other issue.

if its only 300 to get a refurb, might be worth it depending on what you can find locally...

Hm. really only $300? I thought if I did it through them it would be $600+. Maybe I'll just do that considering I got the phone for 1 penny initially.
But I do have some GREAT stories!!! Didn't you notice my text?
If buying off Craig's List, how do I check the ESN or whatever... I don't know what it's called.
What else does one look for? I can check the unlock/relock... what if they did the s-off trick, would they be able to relock it without me being able to tell? I think I remember reading that that's possible after s-off.
I might rather just spend $300 for the peace of mind. jayochs... if I did that through Verizon, since it's now a new phone for me can I add insurance on it? Or will they not care or worse, consider me a high insurance risk and blacklist me?!?! =:0
call and double check.....usually it's $300 but maybe that's only for basic phones.
and i don't think they'll let you add it
Man if you going to pay 300 for a rezound look around a little bit and check for cheaper on here or craiglist.

What other phones should I consider? I picked the Rezound over the Nexus. Since I've had it I don't know what other phones have come out. I really like the Rezound though, except for the fact that it no longer works. heh.

Yeah, I've checked the L.A. CL for Rezounds, anywhere from $100 (possible scam) to $250.. But bledstol (sp?) made it sound like he didn't think the Rezound in particular was worth it so just wanted to know what he thought was. iirc though, he went to a Nexus which I def do not want.
Rezound is still a top phone. Maybe the razr maxx if you need battery life. I doubt you could find the new incredible lte for a decent price.

Could always try to call in and try to add insurance. Say that you bought it off Amazon and added insurance at the check out and you thought it was on your account. Playing dumb can get things done haha. If they do let you add insurance to your line, hit up Asurion and pay the deductible, get your phone and you're g2g. I know Asurion isn't as good as protect cell, but this could be one of your best options.
The video mentions that you can glue the tabs onto the digitizer. I'm not familiar with the part but if it's not that expensive perhaps you can go this direction. Since you need it perfect perhaps make a template with a dremel(if you can borrow one from someone) and a piece of aluminum?
