So I dropped my Galaxy Note and it got a bruise on the corner and that plastic that surrounds the glass. The plastic that surrounds the glass broke off about the size of the character in the brackets (|)... because of this the microphone stopped working so i setup warranty exchange through AT&T and they sent me a new phone.
Well after I sent my old phone back to them they declared it has having physical damage and charged me $599!! I called them and told them in that case just send me my damaged phone back, they said they can't and I can't do anything about it either. They said I have my new phone and should be happy with it. I pointed out that I could have just sold my damaged phone on eBay for at least $200.00 and then got a brand new phone from eBay for less than $599.00 but instead I'm now OUT of the $200 I would've made from selling the damaged phone AND just ended up paying $600 for a "new" phone.. (which is most likely a refurbished).. man I am pissed. Had this ever happened to anyone? AT&T is ripping people off big time!

It is warranty exchange for defective phones....not for physically damaged phones. Insurance is used for your problem. You should have done your homework.

still doesn't make sense that they would not let send them their "new" phone back and avoid the 599 'service' charge

You're not entitled to return a phone broken. OP dropped the phone and damaged it. Careless damage = not AT&T's fault.
The OP I leaving out the part where they TELL YOU that there will be a $599 charge after they ask you MULTIPLE questions about physical damage on the phone...including the bezel and screen and such....
I work at&t and will be the first to defend a customer especially one from XDA but the OP is wrong in this case...

Yeah, the 14 day return only counts if the phone is in the same condition they sold it in. I was told this by a Rep so it may not be completely correct but this is just from personal experiences.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. After my post and the comment that followed I was wondering where you send a phone that did get broken from operator error?
Repairs are usually less than replacement.
Now....according to my insurance through ATT, although not from ATT directly, but offered by ATT, I have damage coverage to include water, drop, explosion, zombie world domination etc.
So am I to assume that my insurance is not going to help me ??

I run into this at work ALL the time. The end consumer does something dumb, and damanges their product, brings it back expecting us to lose money and give them another for free.
If you want coverage, you pay for coverage. Use this as a life lesson that black tie is the way to go.

I thought there was a 30 day phone swap policy, if something went wrong (like my kickstand) then they would fix or return it for a new one. But Apparantly it's 14 days or something, just like the phone exchange. I went in and they said you can send it to HTC to fix it. Sigh. Less than a month old and my kickstand doesn't fully work. Yay!
Sorry to rant. Just disappointed.

Not that it matters, the new $11/month charge for TEP is ridiculous.

Is it worth it? $11 a month x 24 months = $264 plus cost of "repairing" the phone itself right? Couldn't buying a new phone off contract on craigslist or something in a few months be cheaper if it fully broke? How much would a stupid kickstand repair cost anyway?
I hear good and bad things from insurance. I don't break my phones often, this is just a "hardware" defect, sigh.

I believe its a personal choice. In my case , the way I destroy/lose phones it is completely worth it. Twice I had to have a new 3d overnighted to me ( long stories) the 120 dollar fee to have New one on my doorstep the next morning seems very reasonable -since I have all my New data backed up to dropbox while charging its reslly NBD. DON'T get me started on my og EVO that was 5 replacements lol. Anyway totally worth it here.

I average 1 tep claim/replacement per year and one time I even hit my 3-in-1-year limit so it was worth it for me. I'll pay $11 but if my deductible becomes $150 I 'll drop tep.

Radio Shack is 30 days and the warranty is 6.99 but funny thing is its handled by the same company that does sprints insurance. Also the deductible is only 50-100 depending.

lemme guess OP.. The kickstand got a lot weaker than it first was? Same problem here. You can disassemble the top half of the back and you will see a nut right above the kickstand. Use a fine tip object to rotate it downward to tighten it and put a dab of glue (optional) so it doesn't loosen again. voila!
The return/exchange window for any device from sprint is 14 days. TEP is beneficial mainly if you lose your device or it gets stolen, because otherwise you would have to fork up $500+. If you don't have tep and something is wrong with your phone, sprint will still fix the issue, but it will cost you $35. I work for a sprint service and repair store. Hope this helped.
XDA Premium
You don't need TEP, I had that crap removed when price/deductible went up and had the ESRP $4 bucks a month added instead.
That is the warranty repair/replacement and has no deductible.
Basically is the other half of TEP besides the Insurance part.
Covers everything but lost, stolen, water damage and physical damage. Warranty is extended indefinitely with plan, normal wear and tear and electrical failure are all covered also.
Have that added instead of TEP and they should fix for free for ya.
Rep on phone told me that I could go back to TEP so long as I never removed this option otherwise TEP can only be added at device activation.

So, I have a dead phone wth a cracked screen. Was running what is in my sig. No CWM.
NO INSURANCE.
It happened on my way to work, I suspect the battery was drained. I thought it was charging in the car but the charger was loose from the car adapter and I can't see it easily because of the way my car is made. So it rebooted itself - which it always did periodically - when I parked so I put it in my purse as I walked to my office. When I pulled it out it was stuck on the boot animation screen. So I pulled the battery and rebooted. It got to the HTC white screen and I think that's as far as it got then it died.
Have tried all the various battery pull / plug in / adb / power+vol down orders and nothing gets it going. There is absolutely no orange light showing up at all when it gets plugged in. I left it plugged into the wall overnight and still nothing.
Took battery to Verizon, they got it charging in another phone and said it read around 40-50% charged. (I had left the phone plugged in several hours at work to see if eventually something would happen.) So I don't think it's the battery since I'm pretty certain it was dead and now has a charge. Don't know if it was able to charge through my phone or not, but I doubt it was charged that high when all this happened and I'm sure it didn't get charged that much in the Verizon employee's phone.
Ordered a battery + charger from Amazon. Got the battery and tried that but no go. I don't know if the battery has any charge or not. When I get the charger I'm going to attempt to charge both batteries to 100% and hopefully one of them works. I've read several posts here about how it seems to be a matter of voodoo. Several people with the same symptoms just popped in a different battery and then it was fine.
So...
OPTION 1 - This all happened Monday, Aug. 6. Does anyone think there is any chance that if I show that I had the cracked screen before that and my phone was working fine that I can get a warranty replacement? I would think that they will blame it on my dropping it and will not give it to me but I'm wondering if anyone has been in this situation before. As of now I have not let Verizon know that my screen is cracked.
OPTION 2 - My other alternative was to fix the screen then try for the replacement and blame the ICS update. However, in the repair thread there is mention of little tabs that are not on the replacement and that the capacitive button lights are messed up because of that. So I don't think that will fly.
OPTION 3 - Buy a phone from someone. I found a listing claiming they can get Rezounds for $100 even if you're not eligible for an upgrade yet, that they can "get one". Is this most likely a scam? If not, I'll just go this route since I can also add insurance this time.
Also, if I did somehow manage to get a warranty replacement, does anyone know if I can then get insurance on that phone?
TIA for any advice.
:crying:

verizon is pretty strict on insurance. If you don't add it when you first get a new phone, they usually won't let you add it. You can always try online and see what happens.
I doubt they will warranty your phone with a cracked screen. They will send you a phone, but you will be charged on your account.
As far as the 100 dollar rezound, that sounds too good to be true.
i, and the other employees at my store, will not even waste our time trying to warranty a phone with any crack in the screen, even if there's a good explanation for it. you can warranty it if you want, but you'll see a $300 charge on your next bill because of that crack. no physical damage would ever be covered unfortunately, even if you have a really good story
Even if you can prove the crack was there before the issue it won't matter. The crack supersedes any other issue.

Hm. really only $300? I thought if I did it through them it would be $600+. Maybe I'll just do that considering I got the phone for 1 penny initially.
But I do have some GREAT stories!!! Didn't you notice my text?
If buying off Craig's List, how do I check the ESN or whatever... I don't know what it's called.
What else does one look for? I can check the unlock/relock... what if they did the s-off trick, would they be able to relock it without me being able to tell? I think I remember reading that that's possible after s-off.
I might rather just spend $300 for the peace of mind. jayochs... if I did that through Verizon, since it's now a new phone for me can I add insurance on it? Or will they not care or worse, consider me a high insurance risk and blacklist me?!?! =:0
call and double check.....usually it's $300 but maybe that's only for basic phones.
and i don't think they'll let you add it
Man if you going to pay 300 for a rezound look around a little bit and check for cheaper on here or craiglist.

Yeah, I've checked the L.A. CL for Rezounds, anywhere from $100 (possible scam) to $250.. But bledstol (sp?) made it sound like he didn't think the Rezound in particular was worth it so just wanted to know what he thought was. iirc though, he went to a Nexus which I def do not want.
Rezound is still a top phone. Maybe the razr maxx if you need battery life. I doubt you could find the new incredible lte for a decent price.

Could always try to call in and try to add insurance. Say that you bought it off Amazon and added insurance at the check out and you thought it was on your account. Playing dumb can get things done haha. If they do let you add insurance to your line, hit up Asurion and pay the deductible, get your phone and you're g2g. I know Asurion isn't as good as protect cell, but this could be one of your best options.
The video mentions that you can glue the tabs onto the digitizer. I'm not familiar with the part but if it's not that expensive perhaps you can go this direction. Since you need it perfect perhaps make a template with a dremel(if you can borrow one from someone) and a piece of aluminum?
Thought this might be interesting for some to see how a Square trade accident coverage situation goes. I will update the thread as new events occur. If this isn't kosher to some, please delete. I searched the forums hoping to find a similar thread but found nothing.
I accidentally dropped my phone in my basement Sunday the 19th and filled out a claim form online on the 20th at approximately 12:30 pm central time. I was asked if I preferred to be mailed a refurbished phone of same or similar specs but since I use my phone for work I chose repair mainly in hopes that they can fix it and I won't have to go through hassles of installing a tibu backup. If for some reason they opt not to repair it figure it'd be nice to start fresh with a new Note. I entered my credit card information to be charged the $99 deductible to begin the process.
After filing the claim you are given information that they will contact you within 1-2 business days from submitting. Currently I have not been contacted after 1.5 business days have gone by (full day today, half the day before). They state to call them if I am not contacted in this time but after 15 minutes of being on hold I figure I can waste time doing that tomorrow when a full 2 days are up. The current status online is that an agent is being assigned to my case.
About the phone: It fell about two feet from my couch to the basement cement floor and cracked the lcd diagonally across. There is a chip in the top right corner of the ceramic and dents in the metal around it. It was housed in an elago case which I now regret as it protected nothing. Phone is still functional and has been backed up for when I am able to send it in.
Well that was quick. Moments after posting I received an email with the prepaid next day air UPS label to send it to their depot in LA. What I am hoping is that if they choose to repair the lcd that the chipped corner will be addressed as well as it snags my shirt. Fingers crossed.
Definitely interested to see how this works out for you. Wish you nothing but the best. Good luck.
Ya i would love updates on this too. I have so many warrantees through them but have never had to use it yet.
I always read about how people bust their phone so easily and it baffles me that I've never broken a screen yet. I had my iPhone 4 in my lap sitting in a van and got out forgetting it was their and it fell off my lap face down onto concrete and no scratches to the screen. I had my Note in my hand and accidentally hit my hand on a car door when I was getting out and it bounced onto the concrete below, face down. Got a couple chips on the bezel but that's about it. But yours busted falling two feet off the couch. So weird....

What was weird was I expected it not to be broken. It's definitely not the first time it's slipped out of my hands, but it's been a trooper and kept in tact until the short drop.
Anywho...
Got bored and google searched the place they are having me mail it to. It's these guys: http://www.cfrepaircenter.com
Some spotty reviews online, so fingers crossed. Wouldn't be too happy to spend $100 + original cost of the warranty to get a shoddy repair. I'm going to add a note about the broken ceramic and jacked up metal portion in hopes that it is addressed. I'll post pictures tomorrow to show a before and after.
It depends a lot on how the phone falls. The corners of an LCD screen tend to be weak spots, so it can often crack if it lands on a corner which sounds like was the case here.
With this phone the LCD, front glass, and bezel (the silver band) are one unit. So a cracked glass = entire front replaced. The part costs about $200.

There are a lot of little hairline cracks in the LCD as well that don't show too well. Using a Captivate right now and even with CM10 Jelly Bean, I know I'm going to be missing the Note immediately. Off it goes in the morning!

I haven't bothered doing more than rooting and unlocking it for travel. I need my phone 24/7 for work, and stock hasn't bothered me one bit (ICS or GB) on this. The phone is encrypted, if security was the question.
The finale!
Well, I got my phone back today. Looks terrific. I'll post pics later if needed, but if you know what a new Note looks like, that's what it looks like. Even arrived with the annoying little stickers that came on the bezel. Looks like they even replaced the plastic battery cover.
One minor thing is the phone was returned reset to factory due to my refusal to give up the encryption password. It's not a big deal as I ran a backup, just thought I'd mention it. I understand they needed to do QC before calling it fixed.
Have a new Otterbox Commuter case on the way tomorrow!
Decent service, fast turnaround, and pretty impressed all around. A tad bit expensive at $100 deductible but considering the cost without accident insurance and having to install the LCD myself, this was well worth it.
Thanks for sharing!

One thing you can try is unplugging the battery and leaving the phone in a jar of rice overnight. That has been known to suck the water out of electronics and may help with the glitchy screen. I doubt it'll solve the problem, but it's worth a shot.
As a rule of thumb, I don't recommend that people try to do the Samsung Warranty on their own mess-ups. To quote their warranty website:
Warranty Conditions
...
2. SAMSUNG will repair during its warranty period any product that malfunctions under normal operation, used according to the user manual instructions and the purpose they were designed for.
...

The warranty doesn't cover water damage or user error. It only covers manufacturer defects or repairs caused by "normal" activities.
Yes, your water stickers aren't betraying the fact that your phone has water damage, but the fact of the matter is that you are, effectively, trying to cheat your way into a free, refurbished phone (on Samsung's dime).
I could go on and on about these types of practices (in fact, I have), but I'm not going to today. I'll just end with a quote that I find applicable to this situation:
“The greatest of faults, I should say, is to be conscious of none.” -Thomas Carlyle

I was not hoping to get a fix on samsungs dime since I am well aware its in BER status now, it would be a costly fix but maybe worth it over a new N3 though sometimes BER status devices do go over the MSRP for repair cost...I also heard sprint can do repairs though and charges a fee ontop of it for convenience...but I have no idea if anything else is damaged with the phone.

I'm not sure what BER status is, but if you're willing to pay for the repairs, then my last post was not applicable.
Also, if you're willing to pay for the repairs, Samsung (or Sprint) will be able to fix your phone, regardless of what ROM you have. As far as if it'll be less costly than a new phone, I would expect so, but I can't say how much it'd be.
I still recommend the rice trick and see if that helps.

BER status is what samsung marks devices that have been repaired by 3rd party companies or opened by the user = Beyond Economic Repair. Which means you pay a huge out of pocket premium to the fix versus normal servicing.
I did not have TEP on sprint but the lady added it for me even though I was 35 days into plan and i purchased this phone off swappa, so repair will be free (i think?) unless it needs to be claimed which is 50~200 apparently...either way cheaper then BER service from sammy itself.
and to be a good girl, I wet a cotton swab and activated the water damage indicator on battery so they know its water damaged, even though I wasnt about to because they threw me to curb over intl. use...

Just do a claim on http://phoneclaim.com/sprint the deductible would be 200 just say you dropped it in water and don't say anything about it being rooted to them. And they will send you a new one next day no problem

I took it to local store instead. Phone decided to be perfectly functional, even the guy was like "oh nice rom but how do you see stuff?" but right when I was walking out the phones vibrator turned on. and did not stop, you tap it it turns off you tap it again it turns back on....so they have it at the moment.
edit: they called me said there was no internal damage, etc only some "debris?" and he blew it out and the phones been working fine. So my butt got saved on this one....maybe.

My biggest fear of the G3's thin screen glass happened 12hrs after I received the phone. I didn't hardly even get to use the damn thing. Now I'm just sending it to LG for repair. Yes I could purchase the digitizer and do the repair myself but I honestly don't have the time.

By the looks of the damage...does the little frame dent change everything when it comes to LG just replacing the screen itself? Or do you think they will charge for a refurbished?
huh, I would just be more careful.

Just bad luck on my part. All that damage from a fall from about 2ft. I was talking on the phone with the wife and went to tie my shoe and the rest was history.

They are going to send you what they have in Stock, I damaged my G3 in the rain, the week that it came out.
I paid the $150 deductible, and they sent me a brand new G3 in the box, through Asurion.
Could be refurbished, or it could be new, depending on what they have in stock at the moment.
I would recommend a TPU case, and tempered glass.
You can get both on ebay 2-3 day shipping for less than $20.

I'm actually sending it to the LG repair center in Fort Worth, TX. Same price you paid but direct for LG.
I had intended to get the case and tempered glass this friday when I got paid. Dumb luck just couldn't wait till then. lol

Yup, done that before. I somehow have cat like reflexes when I feel my phone is compromising gravity.

Lol. I tried and all but dove on the damn ground to grab it but yeah...didn't work out.
These phones are slicker than the g2..
I got a cheap bump case as soon as I felt the back of this phone
Almost as though grip is the last thing these manufacturers want you to have. Think about it. We have octocore now. And still we have metal frame and plastic backs or soft grip backs with slippery ass metal frame. Makes no logical sense other than looks and money in damges are a sure business ...lol. Remember that time when most phones had that rubberized metal? Hmmmm. Lol

I was more pissed that I didn't listen to myself and get a damn case and glass screen protector. Just wish the damn glass wouldn't of shattered. I could of lived with a little dent in the frame but the whole thing going out just poured salt into the wound.
Yup, did the same. Fell 2 feet, exploded. My replacement is in an Otterbox
lol, i was afraid of this happening when the wife had hers hit the ground. she had it stuffed under her leg in the seat and when she got out, lol, yeah it went flying. luckily it just put a small ding in the frame. she was REAL lucky.
I wish that was all I got....ending up with both really hurt.
Consumers vote with their wallets for thin phone with thinner bezels. Unfortunately, that translates to more fragile phones, too.

yeah, she was extremely lucky..no money to replace/ fix it. but we have cases and the hard glass protectors in route and should see them by Christmas, as well as my replacement phone. (radio went dead, sprint tech said its a common thing. who knows, just glad my is being replaced.)

Common? I doubt it. I don't think I've read another post here, or on the other big Android forums, about the radios dying. I'm sure it happens, but I don't think it's common.

Sure, most cell phone owners aren't on these forums. But many people do join when they have a problem. I actually think we see more problems on the forums than the population in general.

lol, not the majority of the population i know. that what they use the carrier stores for. very few if any know about rooting...if they can do it from the play store..for the ones that understand it, thats as far as they go.
i started here a few years ago when i got my moto photon, i wanted it more me, but all i did was root, change themes, once changed boot logo and i think once changed the rom. as for my galaxy 10.1, its running a 4.4.4 ROM from nameless. the lg g3 is the first real smartphone for me, but my 2nd LG..lol, first one was in 03 and not even close to a smart phone and im here to learn more about it and to make it more me. this phone is actually worth it.
