[Q] Will Sprint report the pre-orders results? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Perhaps we will have to wait for a quarterly report from the company. It would be interesting to see how many EVO 4G users returned, how many pre-orders they had, and if it was what they anticipated.

Dont bet on that.

A LTE phone without a network? Yeah sells are going through the roof Get in line, suckers.

I doubt they will. Sprint's timing of this phone launch wasn't ideal.
First they launched after the One X, which stole some thunder first. Then they launched it before their LTE went live despite having 4g LTE in its name. So I think Sprint is going to be a little disappointed with their numbers.
Hopefully Sprint can turn on their LTE network ASAP and start recapturing those EVO 4G contacts set to expire.

its just a txt saying you can expect it sometime this summer. lol
nothing to run home about as none of it is new info at all....they have already stated before those markets are the first ones to "officially" get it turned on and said they would be in this time frame....
If you guys want to really learn a thing about the NetworkVision rollout and tech behind it.......head on over to S4GRU.com and the link in my sig....more info there than anywhere else by far.
I was hoping Honolulu, Hawaii would get it some time soon since we had Wimax pretty early.

Thousands of employees do receive this memo..... Just sometimes reps are kept out of listings lol so that why your misinformed most of the time by csr..
edit: didn't mean you in particular more as "you" as all customers in general.
Pains me knowing it will be till the end of the year or sometime next year before I see LTE.
Why is Sprint rolling out LTE in Texas prior to Overland Park?

Ericsson being Sprints full time site maintenance since Sprint no longer does it themselves....
you doing RF i dont even want to guess what you know. lol
My dad used to be a technician for Sprint. He lost his job due to downsizing by Ericsson. It's a shame because he was probably their best technician in the DFW area. Several of his fellow technicians would call him if they needed help.
I'm pretty sure the WiMax roll out is no indication of how LTE will roll out. Sprint used Clearwire's in-place WiMax network as their 4G network. I was lucky enough to already have Clearwire in this area. The only tangible advantage I had was the fact it was faster than public wifi. I don't expect LTE to reach Wichita Falls for at least a year.

Photon MIA on Sprint's Website

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the Photon 4G is no longer offered as a choice on Sprint's website. The OG Epic 4G is even still there, but no Photon, it's missing in action...
Yes, Since the Photon 4G will can not support Sprint's LTE network, they have discontinued it. Phones that are only 3g are still there but the ones that could not be upgraded to support the LTE network have been discontinued and removed.

Well, that would make sense except they are still offering the original Epic 4G. So maybe it's Motorola and not Sprint.
I have not looked into the Epic at all. Can that phone be upgraded to be LTE? I know that the Photon can not.

No, not at all. I still have both. Only will do WiMAX.
well, either way, The photon has been removed from Sprint's store for almost a month now. There were theories that there was going to be another motorola super phone released in the near future, but those have yet to be confirmed from what I have seen.
I got the Photon this past September and as of 6/1/12 the Sprint website says I can uprade at discount prices on a new 2 year contract. Is this normal, or did they change their upgrade policy? Is anyone else seeing early update options?

From what I have read this is the conclusion I come up with...
Sprint needed to clear up some room in the phone lineup for upcoming LTE devices. They need to keep a certain range of phones for each category: budget, mainstream, and power user. The Photon was in the power user (top tier) category. Since they have the new EVO and will be getting the SGS3 as well as a few others, bundled with the fact that the Photon was probably one of lesser selling devices (especially since the release of the SGS2) it makes sense that the Photon was discontinued.
Of course we all know the reason why the Photon was not successful is because of the lack of marketing on Sprint's part and the lack of push by sales team within Sprint. I'm sure if someone came into the store and there was the Epic Touch and Photon sitting side-by-side the typical sales person would push the Samsung first.

If it wasn't for the signal issues with the SGS2, I would have gotten that. When I saw that it had been almost three months at the time and the signal issues hadn't been fixed, I decided against it. When I saw them side-by-side in the store, the SGS2 had a nicer looking screen, and the Photon was very jittery when I'd swipe from one screen to the next. Ultimately, I'm really glad I got the Photon. However, I remember talking to a lot of friends who had the same first impression of it.
I got the photon from Target mobile because it was $50 with my upgrade, and the SGS2 was $200. But the rep pushed me hard into anything but the Photon. He first pushed the SGS2, then the Evo 3D, and then encouraged me to look at an iPhone instead of the Photon. I was actually really discouraged until I got it home and realized what a badass it was!

Yeah, that's too bad. I still have my photon and was hoping for ICS goodness, but it was pushed back to Q4 2012 and likely won't get it. This is the only reason I went with the GNex. I hate bloat, but I do love my photon. It is interesting how Sprint is only interested in HTC and Samsung first before any other Android, except now pushing LG viper, but I bet that'll be a red-headed step child soon.

Likelihood of a LTE fix?

Since Sprint and HTC don't officially acknowledge the problem with switching and staying connected to "weak" LTE signals on the Evo, do you think they will ever release a fix? I am frustrated with the horrible 3G speeds in Houston while being in locations with a LTE signal - I sporadically connect to 4G at work and home but it never lasts.
I really like the EVO 4G LTE and various roms like MeanROM, but I am about to give up on Sprint due to not being able to use my phone except for on wi-fi (3G speeds often at 0.15 Mbps or below, only improving in the early to late evening). If the radio was at least fixed to properly connect to LTE then I could at least better evaluate the situation before calling it quits, but as it is right now I have no hope of ever using LTE on a consistent basis. The only reason I stayed with Sprint in the first place was knowing that Networkvision would go live in July that would supposedly improve 3G speeds and enable LTE. 3G speeds have nearly been unusable during mid mornings/afternoons for over a year now and NetworkVision didn't do anything for me yet.
for what i pay im happy with sprint
and ive experienced 4G at some parts here in the Bronx and its pretty fast to me
maybe its just your area. if i would ever switch i would go prepaid
Its more of a sprint issue, I have to do the airplane trick on all the lte phones in the house and as far as I know the gs3 and iPhone 5 don't have handoff issues like the evo does
This issue was known of before the phone was even released. Sprint has tried to fix it, according to their updates atleast, obviously it hasn't happened. At this point only time will tell. I wouldn't worry about it too much, if your that mad with sprint, switch carriers.

Read this thread, it will explain pretty much everything there is, relating to LTE issues. It's been an on going problem since the phone was released. Trust me, no EVO LTE is exempt. The people that say they have no issues, haven't witnessed it first hand against another phone.

Pretty much anyone with an EVO LTE signed away another two years, so leaving will cost $350 plus the cost of the next phone.
It seems to me advertising a phone as LTE, especially to the point of actually adding that to its name, and then delivering a phone with this defect should be grounds to cancel your contact, but not in the real world I guess.
It's no wonder Sprint and HTC won't acknowledge the problem. If they did they might open themselves up to costly damages.

Well, since I bought my phone as a pre order, that would have been a bit difficult.
Not to be a ****, but I love when people think they know everybody's personal experience.
Sprint touted this phone as being an advanced LTE capable phone, and promised their network was just around the corner.
They then published a schedule stating that los Angeles would go live in September. After I bought it they changed to October. It's November. If not for xda, I still would not know LTE was even here yet.
My experience with AT&T does not leave me with much confidence Sprint would swap me out with a GN3, especially since I actually bought the thing from Wirefly.

I preordered my Evo LTE and it was not well known at the time to have lte issues as no one even had the phone. And when it came out no LTE network went live until July. So how was I supposed to magically know to avoid this phone and wait 2 months for the Samsung s3?
Also Sprint isn't exactly acknowledging the lte issue, they certainly didn't do so when I called to complain. In fact all that has been offered so far is to exchange my phone for a refurb LTE which won't be any better and possibly worse. They weren't receptive to exchanging to a Samsung galaxy s3, they probably will only do so after a lot of effort and multiple exchanges of the evo for crappy refurbs. Even then I have no idea if the 4g network on Sprint is even worth the effort in my city as the evo doesn't give a proper representation of coverage.

Go to a corp store and explain the issue show them in store the sgs3 with signal and urs without it if need be or possible... It might take them replacing ur EVO once before they do the swap for sgs3 but I've seen many do it easily.

It seems in areas where LTE is rolled out and covers well, the transfer or handoff works somewhat well. In areas where LTE isn't completely rolled out, the handoff fails at times, hence the airplane mode switch seems to work. Sprint acknowledged an issue with the handoff in their own forums. I will say, with the newest CMX, I have less issues than with any sense base, for me anyway the handoff almost works every time from LTE to 3G. just my opinion
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
I'll sell the phone if it becomes an issue for me. I wouldn't even give a second thought to it. Since i have no LTE for most likely a very long time I will probably have moved onto my next device. I know s4gru says October for the first LTE sites in MN but I suspect they are way behind target of that. I did the whole toggle wimax garbage for two years with my evo shift. While it was more to save battery than for signal issues I don't want to do that again. I want my phone to work as it should without having to toggle stupid switches. Every time you do that you have to wait for the switch to take place and any data connection that is happening seems to get dropped and you have to reload.
I highly doubt Sprint will ever officially confirm the existence of the flaw because they can very easily blame it on the network. Since LTE will not be fully rolled out for a very long time I have a feeling the EVO LTE will be long in its grave by the time they would have to admit anything.
I've talked to many Sprint reps and beyond 1st level. I haven't found any reps that state the problem is known. I've called HTC, they state there is no problem and offer to check the phone (w/ a fee if no issue is found). The Sprint reps various choices of BS are that it's the new network or different phones handle it differently due to signal optimizations for balanced loading. I go to Houston quite a bit in the evenings and weekends now and see the issue all the time since there is usually an S3 user with me as well. Unfortunately I can't go to the Sprint store while I am there, so I take it to my corp store where I bought the phone. They tell me to take it to the repair store (affiliate), repair store shrugs their shoulders says its maybe the new network, laughs, thinks I'm nuts, tells me to take it to the corp store to get it swapped, and.... well you get the picture.
The evo lte i had gets no 4g and 56k 3g speed all the time. Chicago has no 4g yet. I got a Samsung galaxy s3, and rocking lte all over Chicago. Sprint lies and htc ffffed up this phone and wont admit it. But at least I got both phones for free.

You guys that don't have problems, hang on to those phones and don't touch that firmware as you don't want to mess up the special firmware that HTC sent to your phone with the issue fixed.

[Q] Buy Evo LTE or stick with OG Evo4G?

I've had the original Evo4G for 2 years and 4 months now. It has always been rooted and performs flawlessly and does everything I ask of it. When I saw the EvoLTE was coming out I really wanted one and I was/am eligible for an upgrade. I decided to wait a few months for the kinks to get worked out of the phone before getting one. Sprint offers the LTE for $99 presently and I'm tempted to grab one.
In the last few months I haven't been reading the EvoLTE forum but started reading everything a couple of days ago. I don't have a problem with the people who are critical of the LTE and are leaving it for a Samsung. The Evo4G is the best phone I've ever had and is the first HTC phone I've owned. As I said, it does everything I ask of it, is reliable, and I know everything about it.
My question to those who like their LTE's is this: Should I upgrade to the LTE?
I'm not willing to spend what it costs now for a Sprint SamsungSIII, $199-249 and have no idea if I'd like the phone if I did. I am concerned about owners here who tell of the LTE's Sense not working properly, of data problems, rebooting etc. I've never had 4G in my area and Sprint doesn't even have my area in AZ on the list of upcoming LTE service. I've paid that damn $10 monthly charge for 3G only which annoys me since I own a 4G phone that Sprint doesn't supply 4G service for. I can deal with continuing to pay the $10 for no 4g or LTE but I don't want to get rid of a phone that stays connected always, has a good download speed locally on 3g, and always works, for an EvoLTE that doesn't always work and continues to have problems.
So I guess I'm asking for encouragement to upgrade to the LTE. I'm not going to leave Sprint, the true unlimited Data is the most important feature they offer and I need the several Gigs of data each month that I continue to use. What do you owners have to say?
Thanks~
Get the EVOLTE My dad has an og Evo that I rooted and played with and the difference is just amazing. We compared side by side the stock roms and its night and day. Data speeds were better, apps launched much quicker, the camera took pictures faster and higher quality, and the list just goes on.
Don't listen to the naysayers on here, the new evo is awesome. There have been some LTE issues for some but I'm in the same boat as you with no LTE in the foreseeable future in my area.

this phone is dope.. put this phone next to the phone next to the og evo and u will see it smokes the og evo in every way.. i had the og evo.. the evo 3d and now the evo lte.. i never had 1 single problem with this phone.. its beast! :good:
I also had the original for over 2 years and it IS an awesome phone. That said, if you are in a good signal area, the lte will run circles around it. Very comfortable to use and fast. I'm on MeanRom with mine, rooted and s-off. 3g signal reception is a full 2 bars down from OG and like you, I'm not gonna get 4g anytime soon. If you never roam in areas where signal is down to 1 or 2 bars you'll do fine. If you go into areas like that and making calls or receiving data is important I would wait a while. Personally,I hunt in remote areas a lot. If I'm going for more than a day,I just switch back to the OG for the trip and switch back when home. Good luck with your choice......

Honesty, my reception improved over my dads Evo... By a noticeable amount. We live in the boonies and also hunt a lot and he depends on me to get the calls on my phone because his phone doesnt even ring. It depends on where you live I guess.

as much as i like this phone id say check out the optimous g its a really nice phone overall already cracked. and just gonna be a matter of time before some roms start flooding on to it but thats just me i want it but my girlfriend wont trade me lol.
I would definitely say upgrade to the LTE. It's far better than the previous EVOs in every way, as others have mentioned. I'm one of those who will probably be switching to the GS3, but it's more for the experience of trying something different than what I'm used to over the last three years.
Thanks to all of you for your replies. I'm really leaning towards trying the LTE. My home is in a rural area outside the city and I have excellent 3G coverage. If I can have the same result with the LTE, root it, be able to operate on wireless, and have the "Hot Spot" as I do now on the OG 4G I'll be very happy indeed.

I went to the Sprint website and looked at the Optimus. It looks sweet, my phone before the Evo4G was the LG Lotus. It was a great phone for it's era and never gave me any problems. I don't want to spend $199 for a phone at this time, the $99 for the LTE is in my price range.
Thanks for the suggestion, let us know how you like the Optimus if you get it.
If you want the evo is 99cent look for the tread that has the link.

I'll look for a thread you mentioned, thanks!

I placed the order using your link. It went through as I am a long time customer. The only odd thing was after placing the order it gave me a confirmation number which I used to check on "my order". The page that came up said, "This order must be manually processed" so I'm not sure what that means.
Do you know if anyone using that link has received their phone yet? People were placing orders around 10 days ago, they should have received their phones by now. Another person on the other forum wrote that he got the "Order must be processed manually" also, he hasn't posted again saying if his phone was shipped and was delivered.
thanks!
I haven't looked, but wasn't that special for black Friday? Or cyber Monday?

On the Private Store page it didn't say anything about Black Friday or it being Cyber Monday or anything special. I messed up because the discounts they give you end up with a $49 credit you can spend as you make the order. I didn't notice this until after making my order and then went back to read other posts on the other forum and a few people talked about using the $49 credit to order accessories.
Oh well, if I get the phone for almost nothing I'll get over not spending the credit.
best,
DC
The manual thing is common for the Sprint private store. I got the evo on white for my wife it took like 4 days after the order was placed. I think it took a while because I ordered on Saturday night. She loves it. I score big points thanks to that website. She thinks I bought it at 200 bucks. I (it was free) just don't tell her.

Came from the OG EVO to the LTE recently and I love it. No complaints here

Don't get the EVO LTE over the GS3. If and when you get LTE in your area, you will regret it.
Stick with the OG. Coworker is doing it and does just fine. Getting the ELTE is really just about ICS improvements and to be honest, there isn't that much if you happen to use custom ROMs on the OG. Plus, he gets WiMax where I'm stuck on 3G LOL (depends on your service area of course, but we have a WiMax tower across the street). I actually still use my OG at home with SWAG on it. Works great.
IF LTE is not going to be available before your next contract (2 years if you buy evo lte), then I would upgrade to the EVO LTE.
My main gripe is the LTE connection issues.... it's incredibly frustrating knowing there is 5-15 Mbit data speeds available... but to get them you really have to fight with the phone's software to access the LTE at times.

We never got 4G service in my area of Arizona. Sprint doesn't even list us on future areas for LTE service. Strange, we're a metropolitan area of over 1 million and never even got 4G. :crying:
It's safe to say there will not be LTE service in the next two years so the EvoLTE will be a good upgrade for me on 3G only.
thanks!

4G LTE Connectivity Issues - switch to different phone

Let me start by saying i've loved the Evo 4G LTE, but I cannot handle having my data connection cut out on the regular.
So, I called into Customer Care after reading about some others on here doing it, to get my 4G connectivity issue fixed once and for all. I explained my situation, and I was told to take it into a service center and they will verify that there is no physical/water damage, and they will discuss comparable phones with me.
I took it into the service center yesterday evening. I called about it today, and they told me that ,"It is connecting to 4G right now. But there are improvements being made to the towers, so it may be intermittent." I wasn't going to fall for this line and informed them that i'd like to switch over to a phone that gets a consistent connection. They gave me the standard crap about having to have 3 or 4 replacements before they'll consider another phone. They could order me a refurb EVO if i'd like. (This was all despite informing them what Customer Care had told me.) I got slightly rude because i was angry, but told her to order the phone.
I then called back into customer care, and they took care of me. She ordered me a Galaxy SIII over the phone.
Moral of the story, call into Customer Care and you should be able to get a replacement if the 4G LTE connectivity is an issue for you as well.
Cool story lol. Doesn't 4G connectivity issues mean 4G connectivity issues? Either way, see ya and thanks for your contributions!

Dude I get data disconnection all the time. I will have to toggle airplane mode just to get a signal and sometimes a reboot is required. Long did you have the EVO? Do you have insurance thru Sprint? What happened to your EVO? Everytime I've called Sprint they would make you do a factory reset and hell if I'm doing that. the disconnection happens maybe every other day for me.

Yep, that's the exact same problem I was having. From everything I've read on here, many EVO 4G LTE owners have the same issue. I got to the point where i was fed up with it though. I had that 2nd one for ~4 months. I've been on the EVO 4G LTE since mid October though.
Yes, I had the rip-off $11/month insurance through Sprint. After talking to customer care, they are going to send me an SIII and I will be mailing my EVO back to them. Picking it up from corporate repair store this afternoon after their "fix", which was basically telling me that it connects to 4G and work on the towers is the reason for intermittent connection.
Please update the OP once you get the SIII and tell us if its any improvement.
Im curious to know.
-Thanks

Well I don't have insurance thru Sprint anymore. After they raised it I went thru a 3rd party company GoCare.com. So I guess I can't get a different phone like you then....

Will do. Many of my co-workers here in Chicago have SIII's and have an almost constant connection to 4G. I'll update my experience with it once I've used it for a few days
What do you think the odds are that HTC would give me a replacement device even after I unlocked thru HTCdev?

Trust me when I say switching to a different phone made all the difference in the world with my 4G/data dropping issues I had with the Evo LTE...it's really no comparison, something was really wrong with the Evo..Keeping my eye on the next HTC device though, cant beat HTC build quality..

Looks like I'm screwed. If the data dropping was a constant issue then I'd file a claim with GoCare. It happens maybe every other day and if I send them my phone the odds this happens within the hour they determine something is wrong is very slim. That sucks tho because they told me I could possibly pay my $50 deductible and I could choose my replacement phone. I'd go Note 2 all the way!

I called Sprint and I'm getting an S3 for $50 and sending them my EVO. So happy this problem will not apply to me anymore!

I live in San Antonio, which has had LTE for a while now, and I've never had a problem connecting to LTE except in the building I work in. I'm on wifi at home, but if I don't have my wifi on, I don't have this problem...
..maybe it's not all of the phones, just some?
Anyway, I'd like an update too, from the OP in this thread, just to see what he thinks. New phones are coming out all the time, and I'd hate to switch when the one I've got is still pretty good.
