[Q] What new phones do you recommend? - HTC EVO 3D

Thread says it all, with chad.goodman gone, development will like almost completely die here... SO to avoid ANOTHER one of my threads being deleted by a mod because it has chad's name in it, what phone do you all recommend.
NOTE TO MODS: This is simply Q&A about my upgrading to a different phone, we won't turn this into some "Save chad.goodman" thread, I just want input, please dont delete this people!
I am open to all suggestions of phones (android of course) but it needs to have a good screen, camera, good developer support, 1 GHz+ processor, etc. Basically, it needs to equate to/beat the specs of our once beloved 3vo!
Thanks in advance for suggestions

As a person that just upgraded like 2 days ago to the EVO 3D from the EVO 4G, I would say maybe wait a month or 2 until the next wave of EVOs are released. That or any of the Nexus phones.

There are a lot of awesome devs working on the 3d still so I plan to keep mine until next year. I'm avoiding the coming evo because of the non removable battery and no lte coverage (I currently have wimax at work and don't want to lose that while I wait for lte.). Maybe next year, lte will come to my area and make next year's evo worth the upgrade for me.

Preorder the EVO 4G LTE! That phone seems amazing (1.5 GHz), or wait for whatever new phones Sprint will carry next.

SGS2 or HTC EVO 3d (Or are there really NFC Micro SD cards?)

So, I've been in a huge pickle between the SGS2 and the HTC EVO 3d. Since it releases tomorrow and I've had my current dumbphone for 2.5 years, I'm really hankering for an upgrade. Verizon has been a lot of headaches personally with constant dropped calls in my home.
Specwise, yeah I do prefer the SGS2 for the main reasons of battery life and NFC. But apparently according to some further research, NFC isn't enabled in all SGS2s?
But if someone here can straight out tell me that the EVO 3d has the battery life to get me through at least two days of casual usage (web(non-flash), Google Music, Facebook, SSH into my server, 1 or 2 games during the bus/train ride.) then I'm going for the EVO 3d on Saturday. (I graduate High School tomorrow )
I'm impartial to 3d. I like it's application in the 3DS and I like it's application in Avatar but I do not think it's meant for a home viewing experience. I honestly have never seen an EVO 3D so IDK even vaguely how it looks on it.
I <3 NFC is the main reason I like the SGS2. I love that I could just walk out of the house with just my phone. Forget wallets, forget keys and just live digitally. OFC when I run out of battery I'm done for but ehh
I'd love a suggestion or two and yeah I do realize that HTC hasn't unlocked their bootloaders yet but I have faith that root will happen eventually.
You may be waiting a while.. we don't know yet. No one can really help you decide on two phones when we have no hands on info on one of them.
The only thing I will say, it we have no idea when the SGSII will be out. Are those features worth waiting up to 6 months to move into the next phone?
By the time out the next big phone will be right around the corner.
I agree with shadow. If they (Sprint and Samsung) delay the release of the SGS2 then it will be too late and a dollar short. But then again there's only two phones anyways; experimental and obsolete.
Epic 2 announced. 1.2 GHz SINGLE CORE Fail

As long as the Within is indeed the SGSII and it's coming out soon, then I'm happy.

Hi ColdH33t, Yes there are really NFC-microSD cards which will enable phones without NFC functionality to become enabled. Our company has the product and are working on making available to everyone for sure this year. Please visit the XDA thread below where I'll post full details after my 10th post:

Please don't bump an obscenely old thread to promote something you're selling. That's not what this forum is for.

Hi Reaperofsouls06, I'm not trying to promote something I'm selling. I was responding to some inquiries made by forum members about the NFC microSD and was trying to give info as to why it is not yet in public everywhere in the market, and how our company has been pushing to make it happen, but have encountered obstacles (especially with the bigger players pertaining to the same product), and what our plan was to get a "universal"/ "open" version (which isnt controlled by the Big Companies, or Mobile Operators) to the market this year hopefully, and also have a "Developers" option, where we will have the codes available for Developers/programmers, which the bigger companies would not do.
I did not mean to come off as trying to sell a product.

[Q] Evo 3D or wait?

Now that people have the phone in their hands, is it worth it to upgrade to the Evo 3D. Since there are rumors of the SGS2 (within) coming to sprint on the 24th of july, would people recommend waiting or just get the 3D now and calling it good?
No BS assessment
HTC=LEGENDARY
SAMSUNG=NO COMMENT
I love my evo 3D its godlike, 3D is actually bad ass, I thought it was going to be annoying/gimmicky lol.

Honestly you could second guess yourself to death.....There's always going to be the next great phone that's just around the corner. I got my 3vo and I love it, plus personally I'd never by another Samsung phone in my life.....but that's my opinion. If you look at the phone, try it, like it, and can see yourself using it for 22 months go for it, if not wait for the next one.

So you think samsung will be as bad with updates as they were with the previous galaxy phones? I had an epic but i returned it because of the screen wobble and froyo never coming
I guess the real question is will anything coming in the next month be honestly significantly faster than the EVO 3D? If not, then why wait

My personal opinion is get the Evo. Even if the SGS2 comes out in July, you can always swap. Also, most any phone thats going to come out in the group is going to perform more than adequately. I like the look and feel of the Evo 3d, and HTC has a history of dev support.
I don't know....maybe they turned over a new leaf, but in the past I've had too many problems with Samsung to give them another chance. I had my HTC HeroC for the last 16 months and it has been a wonderfull phone...now my son has it. Good quality, lots of potential, durable.....but hey these are just my own opinions. Go have a look for yourself, if you like it get it. It's a pretty safe bet that in the next month Sprint's not going to put out anything that's going to exceed this phones capabilities.

The problem is that Samsung's international support is better than for their US products. Whether this is squarely on Samsung's shoulders is up for debate. They at least appear to be trying to appeal to the mod scene and with more than just words. I like their AMOLED screen, but I like the high res of the Evo 3d. They both look like great phones, but the Evo 3d got here first.
I guess I'll just go for it. It does look like there are some issues, but of course you always hear more from the people with problems than those who are content. Plus HTC looks like it has been receptive to fixing problems.
Buy the E3D and if you don't like it you have 30 days to exchange it.
You do realize that Samsung has provided the CyanogenMod team with SGS2's? That means that Cyanogen will most likely use that phone as the base for his ROM.
Samsung is loosening up their hold on their phones and the specs on the SGS2 phone are sick. I'm holding off for that phone instead because I won't use 3D as I already get migraines.
I'll wait for the next best thing.

And always be waiting? If sprint came and said officially the within was coming on july 24th, and samsung would give better updates than it did with the epic. I would wait. But is the galaxy s 2 (within) going to be significantly better than the 3D?

Rogers and GSM Owners: Are you happy with your Evo?

I just wanted to gauge the general feeling amongst those of us who have a Rogers or GSM Evo 3D. Are you guys satisfied with your devices?
I think we can all agree that one of the greatest advantages Android has over iOS is the ability to root and install custom ROMS on your phone. It really keeps your phone fresh and extends the lifespan of the device.
However as well all know, development for the GSM Evo has been lackluster to say the least. It isn't the developer's fault (the few that are active like Leedroid have been great) but they can't do much without those missing Shooter U files.. Another question I want to ask is, how likely is it that HTC will actually release these files? It's been almost 2 months since the phone has been released and still there's been no indication of any release.
The Evo 3D has great hardware, but what good is it without software that's equally good? I would almost rather use my Nexus, which can at least run MIUI and CM7. While I would have no problem patiently waiting for a ROM if it's development was in progress, but there's no point of waiting hopelessly when the development isn't even possible.
Right now I'm contemplating selling my device just because it's resale value is still high and because there's been no indication that the development situation will get any better. I'm wondering how you guys are feeling about this? Are you guys more optimistic than I am?
And just so there's no misunderstanding here, the point of this post wasn't to bash the Evo itself. But if this is going to be the phone I use for the next year and a half, I want it to be future proof. I want it to be able to run MIUI, CM7, CM8 when it comes out, and so on.
Great device so far!
I've had the EVO 3D for about 3 weeks now and so far I'm loving it! Coming from the Magic/Sapphire device, Android feels like a completely new experience. I'm still running stock and have not rooted and unlocked the device itself but will be once more stable roms are available. I have faith that dev will pick up in the next month or so after Rogers releases the Samsung S2 for LTE and starts to discount the 3 year purchase price for the EVO 3D making it even more attractive to more consumers. HTC has also been playing nice (for the most part) with the dev community that they'll be releasing the files that our devs need shortly.
So no worries, it'll happen!
In any event, back to playing with my EVO 3D!
Don't really care if HTC release it or not. The phone is awesome as it is!
I've rooted my Evo3D to get Titanium, but Im running stock, and couldn't be more pleased, and dont have any plans to put another ROM on.
The only thing Ive noticed that does make me wonder a little, is that my Evo seems to have lower benchmark scores than you usually get from this phone. Dont know if its something that Rogers have done, or a fluke or what it is. But it seems fast enough, and we all know that benchmarks are often meaningless...
I've had the Captivate and the Arc before. The first thing I wanted to do with those phones was to flash a Custom ROM so the performance would actually be decent. With the EVO, I honestly don't really care(at least, for now). I really like it, everything is smooth and fast. MUCH better than the arc. Awful awful phone.
I'm really satisfied with the build quality. It feels like a tank. Without a doubt the best phone I've ever had.
I've been using LeeDrOiD on my E3D for over a week and I find it quite smooth, but even my wife's stock Evo 3D runs very well. Yes, I'd like to see development for the GSM take off, and I think that'll happen once HTC releases the fixed kernel sources (which I reminded them about not 30 minutes ago on their Facebook page), but I'm very happy with this phone.
You guys have made me feel better about my phone lol!

[Q] Upgrade Question

So I heard us EVO 3D users have some way of upgrading to a EVO 4G LTE? I bought my 3VO in December of 2011, so I was wondering if somehow I could do this. I've heard talk about this all over. Like some HTC thing or Sprint thing. idk. Point is, is it possible?

Current Phone: HTC EVO 3D CDMA
Rooted, Stock kernel and ROM

Current Tablet: CM9 HP Touchpad
Better than a iPad, cheaper than a Kindle Fire.

Retired: iPod touch 2G
Temple Run runs like crap.

Umm, you can buy it for full price. The only other way to get your upgrade date moved up is if you call sprint and the rep is feeling VERY nice, but I can guarantee you there is a 1% chance that will happen.
yeah you gotta wait 22months for your 150 dollar and 2 year price upgrade. thats about it. however the 3d is going to get ICS soon and function wise the evo 4glte isnt that great... this phone still has alot of untapped potental. my advise, wait there will be something better then than that. dont waste your money

Thinking about developing MeanROM for GS3

OK, so I have my eye on the SGS3. I'd like to be able to develop for that like I do my Evo 3D, but I have a few questions since I don't have the phone and there's a lot of experience here. I could probably spend an hour or so searching for this stuff but I figure I might get better ideas from asking.
First, how is the dev scene for this phone? Does it ship s-off? Any issues specific to developing for this phone? Hows the camera? Does it have true zero shutter lag? HTC making phones with a half second shutter delay (that and quality issues) are one thing that has pushed me to try Samsung this time. Finally, it appears that some Sprint customers (like maybe ones with Sprint for 10 years) get an upgrade after a year. Sprint wants me to wait 2 years for any discount. I can't afford the full price but I know sometimes there are unannounced discounts or ways to get it cheaper. For example, Sprint said I didn't qualify last year for my Evo 3D either until someone here pointed out that I should check to see if I was a premier member (I think that was the term). Turns out I was and only had to mention it and I got the discount. Any ideas? Anything like that possible this time?
Oh, I want to keep my Evo 3D so I can develop for both, so I guess getting $100 trade-in discount is out too.
Thanks for any insight,
Mike
Samsung devices come with unlocked bootloaders, and there is no such thing as s-on or s-off, there is no signature checking in the bootloader.
There is a flash counter and service at the moment, but nothing to stop you flashing or developing custom roms.
Seriously hoping this is true. I switched over to the Epic 4G Touch a few months back. Gave my 3D to my Mom running MeanROM. Been missing it ever since. She gets awesome life running the old 3.3. Just came back home and now updating her to your latest version. Thanks for your hard work on this Rom and making my life a little easier. MeanROM=0 tech support for Mom's phone.

mickeyxda,
I've been fan of your Mean Rom from Evo 3D and EVO 4G LTE. I recently gave my Evo 4G LTE to my wife and got my self a shiny new Galaxy S3 off of Craiglist for $250.
The Reason why I changed is because I got bored of Sense and although I like CM10, it's neither ready for prime time and missing a lot of the functionality from HTC. Also until Mean Rom 4.0 Sense roms tended to lag if you had lots of apps and Widgets like I did. The 2GB of RAM in the US GS III's was a big seller for me. Also like motion features a lot. This phone has never ever lagged for me on Touch Wiz.
That said, Its super easy to root theses Samsung Phones. Like veyka said, these phones have unlocked bootloaders. You just install a custom recovery using ODIN then flash a small root file to obtain root and avoiding installing factory recovery on boot.
I'll be honest with you, It would be awesome if you could develop Roms for GS III with the quality of your Mean Roms. Although the performance of Touchwiz is second to none I hate the fact the it takes up a lot of my screens real estate for the Dock. I hate that. By the way, few Sprint GS III roms include Google now for ICS like Mean Rom. Currently I use Blazer Rom with Apex launcher. For some reason the Apex launcher transitions are not as smooth as when installed on the Evo 4G LTE though. I guess that's an Apex Launcher issue.
Anyway, hope this info from a user stand point can motivate you to start developing for it.
Let me know if in any way I can assist you with your decision to develop or not. PM me if you want. I'm also on Google+.
