OK...Love this phone, but there is one thing bothering me that I can't find the answer to. I've looked in the One X/S forums, and tried searching to see if there are any apps that would help. So far, no luck.
I know, due to the Apple patent BS, that they had to remove the functionality of popping up the menu when you click on a link to ask what app you wanted to open it in. For the life of me, I cannot find any way of setting the YouTube app to be the default app to open up Youtube URLs. I've cleared the settings in the browser, but every time I open up a Youtube link, it sends it to the browser.
Probably even harder, but I would also like to make Google Maps URLs open in the Maps app when clicked from the browser. I looked for those defaults, and the Maps app is set for those URLs, but in the browser, it still opens in the browser.
This is the one thing that is seriously bothering me about this phone.
Might be a glitch, try a different browser like chrome beta
sent from my EVO LTE
It isn't necessarily happening just in the browser. The Maps issue is, but if I open a map link in G+ it opens it in Maps. But if I am in Reddit News or G+ and hit a Youtube link, it always opens in the browser.
I would like to know this as well. Viewing YouTube videos through the browser is very bad and doesn't do full screen correctly.
Mainly for reddit news app.

Did you look under settings, app associations? I think that's how google made it work.
"We're coming from a pure power source."
Yeah, there isn't a way to add a new one, and there are some for Maps but none for YouTube. I think that is why Maps links in G+ work right, but YouTube always opens in browser.

This thread should answer your questions.

It's because of the stupid Apple patent that held our phones up in customs HTC put in their own custom app Associations link which kills internet links.
I'm thinking of rooting just to get rid of this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26155244&postcount=19
There is an HTC link app, you can try opening it up and configuring it, if that doesn't work try renaming it.
My EVO is still lost in the wirefly black hole so I can't confirm if this works

Thanks for the replies. I saw that link app as a default in an app called Default App Manager, but couldn't do anything with it. Suspected that was the culprit.
The HTC workaround doesn't seem so bad, but they should have given us more control to manually set things. Wonder if they have an API for it. I wouldn't be opposed to writing a more full featured app. Will have to do some more research.
I don't blame HTC, I blame Apples's patent trolling.

i just came to post about this, it seriously is a problem. youtube links in texts, emails, anywhere go to the browser. its terribly annoying!!!
shouldn't the Youtube app itself have a setting to make it default for youtube links? that app has like nothing in the actual settings. grrrrrrrrr
This whole 'new' way to choose what link opens which app sounds like a huge pain. I f*ckin hate apple. Buncha tech nazi's. How did they even get awarded that patent anyway? How much money did they throw at the patent office?

I recently purchased an Atrix 4g, for the most part I have adapted to the Android OS pretty well. Since I got my phone one problem has plagued me, I cannot view most websites in desktop format. Most of the time I am being forced to view websites in mobile format.
I have done plenty of research and have come to the conclusion that I need to change my user agent settings. Armed with that knowlegde I downloaded Dolphin HD and switched to desktop mode. Nothing has changed. I just want to see gizmodo.com with flash.
AFAIK dolphin doesn't support flash
Use opera mobile 11 or the stock browser itself for flash support and at the bottom click full site to view it
And opera also allows changing user agents
Gizmodo hasn't had a full site link in a very long time.
If I turn off the mobile view on opera it still redirects me to m.gizmodo.com
To test your solution I went to m.gizmodo.com on my desktop and I still don't see a full site link.
Were you referring to the Mobile view on off switch on opera?
Actually, stick with Dolphin HD. Setting your user agent works. But what you need to do is you have to clear all your browser data. Go into advanced settings in Dolphin and checkmark everything in the clear data section so you can start with a clean slate. The next time you go to Gizmodo, you'll be redirected to the desktop site instead of m.gizmodo.com. You're being directed to the mobile site despite your user agent because your browser has cached data.
Skyfire browser. Short and sweet... set into desktop mode. Then your good to go!
Skyfire supports flash, bo problem, its small/quick like the builtin browser.
if you visited a site and were already set to android/mobile view, and are stuck in mobile view land... clear your Skyfire cache/history.
Poop
early android had about:debug options for the builtin browser for making firefox like under-the-hood changes to ones browser... but google put the kybosh (sp?) on that! Maybe we'll see it come back in future versions!?!? Anyway. Happy browsing!
Oh, and congratz on ditchn your apple-fanboy life-style! Maturing to manhood (aka AndFreakn) sure does feel nice! ;-)
Nope, that didn't work either. I even cleared out the history. How do you clear the cache? Also, is this an Atrix problem?
P.S. for how awesome android is supposed to be, it sure does suck at loading desktop friendly websites. I have this really old a ****ty phone called the iphone 3g that can do it. As of today I have downloaded; firefox, opera, dolphin HD, and skyfire. Im not a big fan right now.

I'm highly upset about this. Although the mobile site is faster to load and saves bandwith (when running on data netowrks of course) I still love viewing the full site on my phone.
Since they did this I visit the site less and less; it's a shame :/
I honestly hate the redesign, and still use the uk.***.com or ca.***.com versions of the sites, which load the old design, and should still work on mobile devices. (Though unfortunately io9 does not have a uk or ca page for some odd reason) Also, have you tried the addon for Dolphin HD that has the 1 button desktop/mobile user agent switcher? It has worked for me quite well on Hulu.
is if there was a facebook app (3rd party alternative) for the galaxy tab?
it seems to be gone from the market.
Friend Me for Facebook is a great app for tablets
FriendCaster Tab for Facebook is also a great app, but it is still Beta and crashes a lot.
Personally I'm FriendCaster Tab for now and it has a lot of nice features
I have no problem just using the full FB website on my Tab.
Same as tried friendcaste and friend me but not complete so just use the web

Great post! Never even thought about using the web. Will try that
No matter what you use, the full site, the mobile site, or the sideloaded phone app...it is near impossible to tag people properly (just one complaint). In the full site you click a pic and it opens in that theater/lightbox popup thingy over the page, and if you click on the pic to tag, the tagging prompt opens but then when you click in it to start typing a name, it just goes away and you have to start again. You can never really get it. And I don't think the app lets you tag at all.
I am still in utter disbelief that there is no official Android tablet Facebook app. I mean, what's the holdup? Isn't this at the top of someone's (Facebook and/or Google/Android) to-do list?? I just don't understand.....it's been months now...

uhh, It should be pointed out that there is no official Facebook app for the iPad either.
I paid for friendcaster and loved it, I even used it on my phone over the official Facebook app but the last update ruined it for me on both devices. The news feed will leave stuff out and now on my tab I can't connect it to my contacts. I also have heywire texting app and it would pull the pictures from the contacts so I could see a pic of the person I am texting instead of just a name. Also when I click a photo someone posted it will load a completely different photo from the album.
I hope it gets work out in a new update, I finally paid for the app and less than a week later the update hit so for now I just go to the site.

Two ways to do this...
1. With stock browser, everytime you open it you have to change the browser settings to desktop mode. This is handled in other forums and is really a pain in the butt because the settings don't stick.
2. Download for free one of the other browsers from the market, I use dolphin for pad. In the settings you can have it permanently set to desktop mode. This allows for the chat to show up on the website as if you were on a computer.
I personally use the website to check my stuff and use one of two free apps for chatting. Either go chat or the friendcaster chat.

And what do they do?
What apps can you absolutely not live without on your phone?
1.) Twitter - Social networking that needs no explination
2.) Facebook - Social networking that needs no explination
3.) Titanium Back Up - Backs up all my apps
4.) Chrome 2 Phone - Streams PC chrome pages to phone's browser
5.) Shazam - Music Tagging app
6.) Polaris Office - Best office client I've found for a mobile device
7.) Set-CPU - Allows overclocking of your device if your kernel supports it.
8.) SystemAppRemover - Removes bloatware embedded into the phone
9.) Word With Friends - Fun crossword puzzler with friends
10.) Google Music - All your music with none of the space.... *To the cloud!*
I hope this thread will unearth some hidden gem apps and make users more aware of how they can take advantage of their hardware and get more use out of their phones.
Thanks
*BTW... sorry to the mods if threads like this exist already for this phone.*
•Facebook + Messenger - socialize from my couch
•Paper Camera - Takes awesome sketchbook style photos
•Tapatalk - keep track of forums
•Amazon App Store - Free Paid App Of The Day
•Stock Video App - Plays my movies
•Stock Music App - 5.1 Dolby sounds amazing with nice Skullcandy headphones, otherwise pretty basic.
•Cover Art Downloader - gets album art pretty effectively.
• Audio Tagger - let's me edit mp3 files. I'm really ocd about my music being organized.
•Plants vs Zombies - really fun tower defense style game
•News/Weather widget - gives you weather and news topics of your choice, nice 4x1 layout.
That's basically it for me. Really need to invest in Ti Backup still.

I wish people would just post 1 or 2 apps, as huge lists with no explanations are kind of pointless.
With that said, I just got a GS2 and have been trying out some new apps I never bothered with on my Droid 1.
I'm using Plume for Twitter. It seems like the highest rated twitter client, and I can see why. It's really smooth and slick and has a pretty intuitive interface. I'm liking it a lot and see no reason to ever try another Twitter app.
Llama- Ever wanted to try tasker or Locale, or jealous of the Razr's 'smart actions' app, but didn't want to spend money on any of them? This is a free automatic settings manager and so far it seems really powerful. I'm just getting it set up today, so I don't know how well it works in practice, but it seems to be able to do anything the paid apps do if not more. I always wanted to see how one of these apps really worked but didn't want to pay 6 bucks for one like Tasker so I'd say this is worth trying out if you're looking for something like this.

Some of my favorite, less know apps:
MobiReader Pro: a picture OCR, done completely on your phone. Turns the text in the picture to a text document, where I then use...
CopyPaste Pro: to copy that text and move it to QuickOffice, and use Evernote, and bam! Document for my computer.
FourTracks Pro: for the mobile musician - it allows you to record four tracks much in the same way GarageBand allows you to, and using a couple other programs, I can mix, edit, and produce all on my phone.
ROMToolbox: amazing program. It combines many programs into one. Just look it up on Market. It's worth every penny.
WifiKill: a fun, trolling, but useful program. Kills any other devices connected to your wiring. So say your wife or children are using the internet, downloading movies and whatnot, you can use this app to cut them off, and get all that bandwidth back for yourself.
Finally, N64oid: a great N64 emulator. Nuff said.

Aren't google now and voice search two different things. the voice search feature of google now is only one aspect of it. Am I correct?
Google now includes cards and the voice search in Google now can respond to your questions.
Cards are just small amounts of common useful information that your phone thinks you need, like weather, sports scores, traffic info etc. Google now also learns based on your location and searches.

When you voice search, it gives more relevant information- like the exact answer, rather than just a web search. It isn't perfect, but much better, and the number of commands you can give it are better.
The biggest change is when you click the actual "google" app in the app drawer.. this is where it pulls up cards based on what you search and use. For example, I searched on my pc for a UPS store, or on my phone with google now voice search, and nothing changes on my phone.. but when it detects that I am not moving a notification will pop up in my bar that shows the distance, time, traffic to that UPS store, without me doing anything. Click the notification and it opens the now card where it gives better detail, and actually has a clickable navigation link to start gps..

It's a background process like the regular google search so no additional power is used since it goes into the background dormant until needed again or scheduled to come up. On the news factor, yup it does, check your card samples, you can set it to show up whenever and how frequently you'd like. I just use mine for weather mostly, shows up whenever I leave home to guide me back too, lol.

I really like the new hangouts. Sure it may load a bit slower, however it lets you know how far someone has read in the conversation and I don't get why it would "disturb" someone... It's just like texting they don't have to respond... Well to each their own, but I see the improvements big time.
