Ok,
I was at the store yday and saw on the shelves Norton for Android for sale. Is this something worth it? Why would I want to install antivirus software on my note? Is it commonly used by most or is just a waste of time?
Thanks
Lol its a waste on pc. It's a whole new level of waste on Android.
It's kinda like a condom... Good to know you have it but you never use it.

Are there any viruses out there? Most antivirus apps are more like utility apps that do many other things. Just not needed.
But I support Norton/Symantec on a PC. You may say bloated but there is nothing better.
I'll just leave this right here.

Well Tex you may be on top of it. Went to that link and loaded up the test report. Has a very thorough test report on which applications are better. But I wanted to know what these malware infestations were. I found my answer here: http://www.mobiantivirus.org/styled/index.html

To find the offending app and uninstall if you're not using it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5sb29rb3V0LmFkZGV0ZWN0b3IiXQ..
Below presupposes your device is rooted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Try this first. If you have TiBu installed, great, if not, get it installed. Next, copy these 3 files to the folder that TiBu creates, open TiBu and restore AdAway. Next, open AdAway from your app drawer, touch "Download files and apply ad blocking". When that finishes, reboot and see if they are gone. If they aren't, try the app below.
To block push ads. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.byq.airblocker&hl=en
Addons Detector is a good app from Google Play that will detect those airpush ad apps too.
Good call guys.. they are right! ..I use addon dectector as well.. when I used to get pop ups...it seeks the app and lets you know what is the cause of the air push.. I hate those.. lol
Not sure if it is specific to the Market app or if it on Google's backend, but the 'trial' period for paid apps (return window) is now only 15 minutes instead of 24 hours.
Pros & Cons
So, it shortens the time for refunds, could be slower than previous version... Any reason I would have to hurry up to install it
? Sooner or later google is going to shove it down my throat doing a forced automatic update most likely
worked for me
thanks
New market is slow.
The new market UI is sooooo much worse than the original one... The HUGE part of a screen occupied by a green useless bar is horrible. The screen size for the list, the thing I'm more interested in, is much smaller. Carousel for featured apps - I'd much rather see the apps in the list than swiping them.
This's just my opinion, of course
Im really liking this new market app. I think its a very clean ui and I don't miss the tabs at all. Reviews and related and developer info all on one page. Seemed as fast as the last version.
While i like the overall look of the new market i agree, you should have the option of hiding the carousel. Definatly takes up to much screen/app list space. Would be nice to be able to slide it up/down much like the notification dropdown.
Also think the 15 min trial is not enough time to test so apps, i.e. Location based apps. Say you DL it indoors/area with no GPS signal and by the time you can get outdoors to test you realize app doesnt work because of a defective GPS ;-). I think trials periods should be developers choice with a minimum of 30 mins
This is one of the fastest Android systems I've used. It scores 1670 on Quadrant. Ive had tested others which score higher (into the 2k range), but this one just seems sooo much quicker. Only thing I've found that I don't like is that some apps dont fill the screen(the slidelock screen, pandora, speed test). I am not used to such a small dpi and having a case on the phone makes it hard to drag down the notification bar, but that may be from my sausage fingers. Also, I cant seem to be able to pin an app shortcut onto the desktop with a long press. Doesnt seem to be an option for it like other roms I've tried. But so far I am liking it, but it will take some time to get used to.
Edit: I figured out how to drop an app on the desktop. Silly me. Longpress on the app from the menu and simply drop it onto the homescreen. So much easier!!!!!!!!!!
Will give it a spin
Alright glad to see some gb hitting the threads especially on sd --I am running cope's now will give this one a try downloading now its late will work on it tomorrow Thanks for the work
Tnx for the build!
Just been playing around a bit on the latest. Incorporated copenhagens fix for su....but I'm gonna give things another go around seeing about getting it perfect....kinda a workaround at the moment.
T-Mobile US users will likely be the only ones capable of using my builds as stated before. Data is working flawlessly in this build.
I backed up then uninstalled by Titanium Backup, and used the installer without a hitch.
Running UnNamed 1.3.2 though, not sure if the newer versions may be the reason why its not working properly.
Cool. Must be the fingerprint with the new UnNamed.
If I say yes now its just a placebo effect in my head.
Have to do some testing with it for a few days and see if its noticeably different or the same.
EDIT
so, installed perfectly using instructions from post #5. I don't really know what's the difference between uninstalling via Titanium vs. adb removing, but it worked with the Titanium method, and not with adb.
Thanks for the tip on using titanium to backup/uninstall, works for rooted stock as well
I've been using it for about two days now and with the exception of an beta-ish incident I had with it (it stopped working after my first reboot if the phone and I had to reinstall it), I can confidently say that this update makes Swype much, much better. Swype always used to piss me off within the day for the simplest of reasons, but with all the new gestures, dictionary options and (finally) contextual typing, it's hard to put this one down. And it should be mentioned that I'm a huge keyboard junkie, if that exists. I have pro versions for most of the keyboards on the market and constantly switch between them because they generally all disappoint me in one way or another.
The voice recognition is naturally better now that the company has been acquired by Nuance, but it isn't quite up to the accuracy of choice dictation on the iPhone 4s, for whatever reason. Is it better than what it used to be on Swype/Android? Hell yes. In addition, this can do languages other than English, something I found particularly amazing.
All in all, I like it.
I just did a proof of concept, just to see if it works... It's really simple actually!!!!
I did orange and blue (Denver Broncos colors) if you guys want it, just install it like normal.
Here is how to do it:
You take that .apk file thats in the OP, make a few copies of it just incase...
Then you get 7zip, open it up with 7zip... copy all the files in "assets/keyboard" to a new folder on your computer.
The files you need to edit are preceded by "display0_" since we have wvga screens.
The way I did it was open it up in photoshop (the images, that is) and edit the file and save it.
The files I editted were:
background
caps
capsbutton
funcbutton
numbutton
selbutton
textbutton
AFTER EDITTING!!
This is where it gets tricky...
You open that original .apk with the 7zip proggy and you transfer all those images back into it, in the proper folder.
Now you need to sign it using apkmanager or whatever you may want. Open it up in apkmanager, and sign it (using the batch signing folder thing option choice thing).
DONE!
Oops guess my message by xda app didn't go through.
The theme did work perfectly, good job!
Would It be too much to ask for a dark-themed swype like on ICScrewD or unNamed?
I use Avast. Use on my PC and it works well. It also has an anti theft routine that allows you to wipe and lock the phone remotely. Its also free.
Ive never ran one but I noticed that most of the guys over at Android Central use Lookout. There must be some benefit.
until i see an antivirus app actually clean an infected phone, i dont see the need right now.
I use "Common Sense: 1997 Edition."
Seriously, most of the malware or dirty apps are MP3 downloaders or similar apps. If you have to ask, it's probably not legitimate.
I use Avast only because of the root features--I downloaded a sketchy apk from a Russian forum (it was that Portal port, OK!) and Avast notified me right away that there was a virus embedded in it. I later found out that the place I downloaded from was not the original posting, it was on a completely different forum (both were Russian though).
Lookout seems to work pretty well, but it's quite a battery drainer. I used to use AVG, and it was quite a bit better as far as battery goes. Now I don't use one at all. As long as you put a little thought into what you do and do not download, you don't need it.
It'd be awesome if the community chimed in now that we have root on which bloat is safe? to remove using titanium backup or such?
Thanks guys!!!!!
PS: YOU DEVS ARE EPIC WIN! for the root
Here's a list by XDA member 12345678(!?) for the S3. It should be similar. As you have root and titanium backup I would suggest you first freeze something you know you don't need and then try to unfreeze it. If that works freeze everything one by one till you notice that you have broken something. Take your time so that you can detect what if anything causes problems when you freeze it. On my old sgsI (still working) even froze Google Maps because it was always stealing ram.
Good luck
So, I'm officially rooted and started cleaning off some of the bloat that I trusted could be uninstalled. I'll post them below. I've decided to hold off on doing too awful much since I don't know what's safe and what's not and I'm not familiar enough with rooting/freezing/uninstalling to feel super comfortable doing it until I have a more set list of what's safe.
That being said, here's what I've uninstalled so far:
Audible 1.4.3
NFL Mobile 6.1.1.1
Yahoo! Finance 120906.01
Yahoo! News 12.09.06.01
Zappos 2.7.0
I backed up every single one I uninstalled. My friend said all I have to do is restore them and they'll be back and I can update no problem. :good:
That has always been my route, to backup the bloatware apps I plan on removing my cut/pasting them to the microSD card then copy them off the card and delete. I have them ready for reinstall if needed.
Is the list pictured above a list of bloat applications that are safe to remove, or what's left after removing the bloat applications?
