little grey piece fell out today.... - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

so, i go to unplug my prime today from it's usb charging cable, and out falls a little grey, thin piece of plastic that is clearly used for something to do with the pins. upon further inspection, it is a broken piece that came out of the prime itself. I'll try to upload a pic. anyone experience this unbelievable crappiness?

Ouch. That looks like the plastic piece that keeps the pins aligned and separated inside of the Prime itself. This is NOT good.

Hopefully it's out of the charger cable and not the tablet itself. It is part of the pin structure.
Edit - on further inspection of your picture and looking at my charging cable and charging port it appears to be part of the tablet. Looks like you'll be in RMA hell like me very soon (See my blacks turned to red thead).

yeah its out of the prime itself....rma here i come

Rma process has been great to me, they received it on the 24 completed wifi fix today and I will get it on Thursday. Not how long it would take for that fix

I hate how the charger doesn't sit steady in the port because of the curved edge of the Prime.
I think this could be caused by that, maybe the charger plug bent and broke off that piece inside the tablet.

CAREFUL!!!!!!charging the prime with case/sleeve on

I just messed up(bent) the metal around charging port of my TFP. i had my tablet connected to charger cable with asus sleeve cover on it. ignoring that the charger cable is still connected i tried to open the sleeve gently and i quickly realized that cable is still on(as i was unable to fold the sleeve cover completely to the back of the tablet) and disconnected the cable. Then i discovered that upper thin metal strip on charger port got bent(upwards) pretty badly and the lower metal parts got small dents. i didn't even apply much stress when opening the sleeve cover. the metal seems to be pretty delicate particularly the upper strip as i adjusted it with my fingers without needing to apply much stress.
so keep this in mind when using any kind of case while charging cable connected.
Lol! It happened to me once but the connector got ejected when I closed the cover again.
Luckily nothing broke

Post a piccy ?
****, happened to me too, i have a 2 year warranty from office depot though, so i'll probably switch it out in the future. As of now it's not causing any problems but just knowing it's there kinda bugs me. Stupid case, it's supposed to protect my tab not mess it up!
Yikes, thanks for the heads up!

I always try and keep that little protector that came with the prime when i first got it in the port.
Yeah, I'm always really careful when I disconnect the TFP from its charger..

Same thing here. If its not charging, it has that protector in it. When it is charging, I put the protector clipped to my case.
Autobots, roll out! Sent from my Transformer Prime!
This happened to me but somehow it is slightly bent the other way (inwards). Luckily the charger and GPS dongle still fit!
I noticed that this happened with mine a couple of days ago. Luckily, its pretty easy to bend it back, but I'll just have to be careful about it from now. I didn't even know that's what caused it.

Bent Boarder Around Charging Port

Does anyone else have a bent silver boarder (champagne Prime) around the charging port? I have never dropped my tablet. I have only charged it once. It is still in the plastic lining that it came in, awaiting its case. I have no idea how it could have possibly been bent. I have heard of accidentally opening a case with the charging port cutout while still connected to the charger, but I don't have a case yet.
Yes, I have a dent at the charging port that didn't allow me to dock the Prime.
I have no idea how it was dented (I treat this thing like a baby), but I have ordered a hard case for it and now keep it docked when I put it in its soft case.
The metal around my charging port on the glass side got bent by the connector in the keyboard dock somehow. I've had it docked for about a week, took it out just now, saw it, and bent it back into place. Worrisome, but don't think it'll affect anything.

Yes, the prime, including the transformer have very thin piece of metal around charging port. If you stress it in anyway such as barely dropping it, it will bend at that place. Since it's so soft there, you can just bend it right back into place, but I would try not to drop it
Mine is on RMA because of a very thin piece of metal above the left dock, but below the glass was missing. I didn't drop it. I had it 4 days and just noticed it didn't quite look the same. With the way the undercarriage folds under I was more worried about pixels light bleed and all the other potential issues that I just didn't pay attention.
Wasn't dropped either, so we shall see what Asus says.
A case is on order lol.
Lol yet another quality issue...
Mine was bent after a day of using it, no dock, never charged
mine was bent from the moment i took it out of the box.. but it not bad so i didnt think of it too much..
Mine has this issue as well I already posted about it here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445024
Mine too!
It must be caused by the dock. Mine has it too.
The prime I just RMA with Asus (screen issues) also has the metal near the glass on the charging port bent. Also the plastic cover on the USB comes off easily when pulling the usb out of the charger adapter.
Yeah I had this. I think though it was caused by the way i hold mine with my left hand in portrait mode. I carefully straightened it and try to be more careful!

Already Broke (and Repaired) Power Connector

Hey Everyone.
While sitting on my living room floor, I dropped my Prime & Dock from about a foot high onto the carpet. Murphy's Law: Gravity will always exert a greater force on the weakest part of your device. The Prime landed on the charging connector. I thought for sure the wire itself would be kinked up and broken (My mind is racing: "can I get a new cable from somewhere in less than 18 hours?! Argh!") As it turns out, the cable was fine, but the port itself was broken.
The little plastic comb that separates the upper pins from the lower pins was broken and had fallen out. I figured I would have to send the dock into Asus to be repaired one way or another, so I thought I'd take a stab at a repair. I used my smallest two flathead screwdrivers (PC-repair sized) to gently bend the upper pins further up and the lower pins lower down. I describe how little of an adjustment I'm talking about here- it has to create just enough room for you to slip the comb piece back in, but not be so much that the charge wire won't flatten them back down when you first connect it.
To make the comb stick, I used the smallest imaginable amount of superglue at either end of the comb piece. It seems the plastic is a little thicker there and there aren't any pins (that might get coated with glue) at the very ends. I used small needle-nose pliers to insert the comb and held it tight for a few seconds. I then put the dock in position so that the comb was facing straight up, so that gravity (grrr) wouldn't pull the comb piece down out of perfect vertical alignment while the glue cured. I left it overnight just to be safe.
Next morning, I plugged in the power connector and all was well. I've probably plugged and unplugged it 20 times or so now, and it feels reasonably solid. Mind you, I have NO doubt that this fix is temporary. The second I trip on the power cord or forget to be gentle with the device that superglue is going to let go. At that point maybe I'll send the dock off for repair. I just couldn't part with it this early on, knowing Asus is dealing with about a zillion more important fish to fry right now.
So, If you happen to have the same problem- give some glue a shot. It worked for me!
Kudos! I can't ask you to recreate and photo lol
But if anyone else runs into this, please take some macros of the process to give people a good idea of just how much bending of the pins is needed.
Naturally. I thought of taking pictures the next morning after everything was working again.
If the comb breaks out again, I'll probably attempt one more repair before I send it to Asus. If and when that happens I'll post up some pics.
As far as the bending of pins, I just pressed gently and tried to insert the comb piece with pliers. If it seemed too difficult to do with glue on the broken piece, I just set it down and pried on the pins a bit more. I guess if you looked at them, you would have been hard-pressed to tell if they were any wider than normal. The telling fact was being able to slide the broken piece back into the pins fairly easily. Once I could do that, I actually applied the glue, inserted the piece, and let it set up.

Charging port metal has finally snapped

I have noticed for a while now, the metal between the charging port and the screen on my prime occasionally bends in slightly for reasons unknown (perhaps a port connection with the dock? The way I hold the tracker itself? I dunno). I have thought nothing of it, and usually just push my thumb there to bend it back to its original location upon noticing it. This was undesirable, but acceptable up until a couple of weeks ago when I realized that the repeated stress on that little strip of metal finally took its toll, and it appeared to be snapped in the center. Again, I pushed it back to the original orientation, but the damage is now done. This makes me unhappy and must be a design flaw. I take the prime almost everywhere I go and use the heck out of it, but I absolutely baby this device. There's no reason why this should have happened.
I can still charge my prime with no issues. I usually keep my prime either in a cheap faux leather case, or in the case and connected to the dock. I've had my prime since May, and have been completely satisfied with this one exception.
Has anyone else had this same problem? We're you able to have Asus fix the issue, or replace the backing, etc? Is this the beginning of the end for my prime? Like I wrote, I am not having any related issues from this at this time. I do not wish to mail it in, but don't want this to get any worse and have problems with my screen because of the lack of any kind of rear support in that little location. Any shared experiences would be appreciated.

Same problem here, all the color has gone and has a wavy shape to it. Not snapped yet though.

Likewise, mine has been like this for a while. Can't fathom what might be the reason as the regular charging cord wouldn't cause damage like this.
The dock on the other hand, is a very likely culprit.
Scribbled with the Note II
1. Docking has bent the aluminium frame above the tablet's port
Looks awful. Hopefully the circuit board's connection doesn't crack. It's only a matter of time I guess.
I noticed mine was bent a few weeks ago when I tried to charge it. I pushed it back with a small screwdriver and it looks OK. Now I am constantly looking at it Anyway, I don't hav the dock so this is not related to it (but the dock may cause it too). I put the little shipping thingy on for protection but it doesn't stay in very well. BTW- Had my Prime since Dec 27 of last year so it's taken almost a year for mine to bend. A friend has a TF700 ans his bent as well. Design flaw indeed.
Bent on mine as well.

Mine was bent upon first removal from the box. I never sent it back because they were very hard get last January. Since then I sent it in for RMA repair for the rear camera issue and Asus replaced the entire unit so problem solved!
same here. Started bending out about 6 months after purchase, then after a few more months of me pushing it back in it finally stapped in the middle. I tried to push it back in but it wouldn't go all the way back in so, and it killed me to do this because i absolutely baby my prime, i had to break the two pieces that were now hannging out becuase they were sharp as heck. I don't ever use my dock so that didn't have anything to do with it and it stays in a very sturdy case so this is obviously a deign flaw. I considered sending it back to get fixed, but after all the negative reviews i've been reading from dissatisfied rma customers i am just settling for telling everyone of my friends who ask me that I will never buy another asus product again and if they're smart they'll do the same. Not only did ASUS put out a flawed device, they refuse to fix anyones problems. I don't care about the wifi or gps problems, some devices will always be better in that respect, but when it comes to hardware defects, such as this problem with the casing breaking off, and about 8 months after i bought the prime the small thin plastic piece that separates the two rows of pins in the prime charging port snapped in half and fell out, so now when i plug it into charge i have to be incredibly careful to not bend the pins inside the prime, and forget about me using my $150 keboard dock that completely stopped working after about 10 months. The quality of these products is just unacceptable and matched only by the insulting refusal by ASUS to do anything to assist us who, like myself, invested $650 for their crap products. whew, okay i'm done.
ASUS must realize it's a design problem. My kids broke my charge port, so I sent it in for repair. I was told they would send me an estimate on the repair cost (since it was customer damage). After not hearing from them for a couple weeks, I called up wanting to know what the hell was going on, and found out that they repaired it free of charge and was sending it back. Nice!

mine did the same about a week ago. I plan on taking some sandpaper and gently sanding down the sharp edges.
This isn't really a big deal for me, I am just slightly worried for the glass, but looking inside reassures me it will be fine with the metal plate behind it.
I actually like that my charger goes in a little easier now, although I'll probably have to shell out 30 bucks to buy a replacement soon, the plastic broke off it a while ago.
I'm not even mad, have squaretrade warranty for another year or so - just waiting for an 'accident' to happen, hopefully around the time a new transformer comes. Not interested in infinity after hearing prime can get better FPS and battery life. Hopefully a tablet with a 1280x800 display and next gen hardware will be on the way soon.

Tricks to prevent magnetic charger ripping out port?

I've read many horror stories about magnetic chargers tearing off the port from Z3's. I don't want to go there so I thought I ask if anyone had some DIY tricks to prevent such issues.
I have a cheap noname cable which has a decent magnet. It keeps the thing in place, the phone charges, but I have no idea if its strength is considered too strong or not. The phone is standing in a home made "dock" (an opened 8mm cassette case so probably doesn't really need that much adhesion to keep things attached.
My best idea is to fix the charging cable to the case so the stiff-ish cable holds up the head at level with the port. Then I'd file the magnet on the head until it's just enough to snap the head the right place when the phone is pushed against it. What do you think?
I bought a weaker magnetic that still took a bit of pull or wiggle to remove. Funny enough the magnetic charger itself broke, I just avoid them now
I've just compared the noname z3 mag cable to the one from the DK31 dock for the Z1: While their physical dimensions are exactly the same the 3rd party cable sports a decidedly stronger magnet.
It charges my Z1 fine, even from a PC usb port. (The DK31 doesn't have a limiter apparently so through it the phone tries to suck as much power as it can which makes the mobo turn off that USB port.)
I've just finished filing the magnet, now it's like an up side down arch, so has a curved valley in the middle, deep down to the level of the plastic casing. ~2mm (0.08 in) left untouched on both ends. It's keeps things in place roughly as strongly as the cable from a DK31 dock. And that is rather weak as the cable pushing against the table can twist off the head. Interestingly since the magnet now has two "feet" at the ends and is not a continuous surface it comes off more "softly", more gradually, kind of rolls off as opposed to the DK31 cable which you pull pull and suddenly the whole thing fully pops off.
I tried and the 3rd party cable fits nicely in the DK31 box. The only thing preventing me from using it to charge the Z3 is that the holder insert is 2mm too wide. It shouldn't be too much of a problem gluing textile in there to secure the phone but for now I'll see how the weakened head works just lying on the table.
