Hey XDA crew!
I´m impressed by the sound of our new SGSIII (bla, bla, worshipping the S3 etc. ).
BUT what I really dislike (and what I´m hating on many audiosoftware products like e.g. the M$ Media Center as well) is the following:
When you are using e.g. PowerAmp, you can see that there is a well organized hierarchical structure when scrolling through your mp3-tagged audio library. For example, when I´m sorting my music by genre, the following screen (after tapping on genre) gives me a list of all artists IN that genre...tapping on an artist there gives me a list of all his/their albums. Easy, neatly arranged, clear.
And this is what it's like in the SGSIII stock player:
Tapping on genre --> the following screen gives my a CHAOTIC messed up list with all the single songs of all albums of all artists in that genre!
Well, perhaps I´m just kind of a geek here, but this is not how to listen to music. Good example: I´m somewhere, wanting to listen to an audiobook. Okay, so lets choose "Audio Books" in the genre. And now everybody should know what I mean: For example, "the hobbit" consists of ~200 single mp3 files...and I have to search them within all the other 1000 mp3 files on my own.
So, the question is: Is there ANY chance of enhancing the stock player with a normal, intuitive hierachical structure?
EDIT:
Nvm thread changed already
Hello
I´ve got the same issue here and i find it very unhelpful, that all tracks are in chaotic order when you choose music by the category "Artist".
But its funny, that the tracks are in correct order when you select music by the category "Album".
Problem is that i have nearly 300 Albums and it is very stressing to scroll through all albums to find the correct one. I´d like to have it sorted by "Artist" and select then an Album.
The Stock Player of SGS and SGS2 doesn´t show this issue.
Didn´t find any solution to this. maybe i stick to a different player until samsung fixes this.
Mate...I can´t believe my eyes...finally someone who finds this system confusing as well
Yeah, for now I´m on PowerAmp again. Considering the lack of interest on this topic (as can be seen here in the thread), I think this will not change in near future^^
Posted this issue on different forums but no one seemed to notice the lack of sorting. For a moment i thought i was allone with this. Even posted this on the Samsung Forum directly, baut they blamed it on the filenames, which i allready checked. Even tried stuff with the tags.
Wrote an Email to Samsung Support. But no answer today.
I think its a simple issue that can be corrected within the next firmwareupdates, because no other model has this problem.

Reminds me of service agents in general. Always knowing what they are talking about

Hmm I don´t think that this will be changed unless there are more people like us...it is the very same situation on all samsung devices (including the S2 and the note). But let´s be optimistic, hope never dies!
Now i figured out, that the player sorts the Titels by filename, but only when your use "Artist" category.
Tried different things and compared some other albums. When you put a Tracknumber before the Title, the player sorts it like this.
But this leads to a problem regarding Albums with more than 10 tracks, because the order is "1-10-11-12-2-3-4".
You can compensate this with an unorthodox method, something like "101 - Title"
Which leads to another problem, the complete rewrite of the filenames of my entire collection.
But still im wondering why the player sorts in "Artist" by Filename and in "Album" by Track ID. This is very unproductive

I asked this question on another forum (ArchosFans) but it was never solved or even remotely figured out. Anyways, I have a very large music collection (about 26,000 songs) and I bought the 250gb model of the Archos 70 so I could hold it all on the device. However, once it scans the media (which takes around an hour for that many songs) it mentions it can only index 20,000 items. Is this a limit by Android or Archos? Have any of the custom ROM/Kernels changed this limit, or is it possible by editing a system file with a rooted device?
There's also the problem that some bands don't even show up in the library but do in the storage, has this been solved in any way? Is it because of the ID3 tag type? Most of my tags are IDE3v2.3 (IDE3v1 IDE3v2.3) or something along those lines.
Thanks for your time and I hope this wasn't already asked/answered somewhere, I did a few searches but didn't find anything.
I have exactly the same problem with the 20,000 limit - I contacted Archos tech support about this yesterday (saturday) and they replied today (sunday - good service guys!) saying that they're working on a solution, so I'm hopeful that this limit will get removed, or at least extended - but I don't know how long it will take them to find, implement and ship a solution. It's also still not clear to me if this is a core Android issue, or something Archos did. I can well imagine that this is the first, or one of the first Android devices with enough storage to actually exceed 20,000 songs.
As far as files not appearing after scanning - I've found that files which have a different "artist" tag to the "album artist" tag seem to get indexed under artist "Various Artists" rather than either the artist or album artists tag - so perhaps some of your files are in there, and not where you're expecting them? Other than that, maybe they were amongst the 6000 songs that didn't get scanned, as clearly only 20000 of your 26000 will have been indexed.
Hey thanks a lot for sharing this info with me, if they are looking for a solution I'm assuming it's an Android limit, probably implemented before companies expressed interest in Android on tablets, and especially with that 250gb limit. I'm also assuming there's a possibility Archos didn't have over 20,000 songs to experiment with.
I ended up going through and removing a bunch of songs, and I think it put me somewhere around 19,000, but the device still indexed 24-25 thousand files, which is weird, I don't have any pictures or videos on the device, and I made sure to delete every folder.jpg file in the music collection. Any ideas which folders and file extensions it scans for?
I might toss Archos a quick email regarding the issue like you did. I'm not expecting a different reply, but I'm hoping they're the kind of company that will prioritize features/fixes that are more often reported since they know it's an issue more users are experiencing.
Thanks again for the reply, I'd appreciate any further information you find out if you for some reason remember this post.
I just switched from an iPhone to the G-Note. While I love the phone and the great screen on it, I have a few issues I just don't get and I would "hope" there are work arounds too. Not being in this world of android long however, I'm lost so after digging around and trying to fix things on my own, I'm coming back here with the few remaining questions / issues.
1) Contact Images - WTF is up with the 96x96 crap? I'm pretty sure my old windows 3.1 could handle those too. When my iPhone rang, it would show great full screen images of the caller and not this crappy little image. I've played with a few apps to overcome this, but they all feel like a kludge to me. I am sync'd with both google and exchange contacts, and the problem is on both of them, not one or the other. I know ICS will up that to 256/256 (only on the local device, the sync data to gmail will still be 96/96 acording to the post i was reading by a google dev), but still, most ALL new phones are at least 720p ( or close ).
2) Quality of Apps - No description needed. The quality of Apps for the android, with a few exceptions, doesn't even compair. As an example, where are the real GPS apps? And those that do exist, I can't find a single one that lowers the volume of playing music etc to give directions. This is a STANDARD for all gps systems today, including my aftermarket in car radio...
3) WHY is 1-202-555-1234 not the same as 202-555-1234 as a contact phone number? Really? I get seperate logs for them this way, as well seperate entries in the contacts info ( when for instance I sync with say facebook and they included a "1" in the info there ).
4) Music Player - Similar complaint to #3. But why is the band "Van Halen" not the same as "van halen" in the info? For that matter, it does the same with the album name as well. This does not just hold true for Music player either, many many apps on this platform do this. This has forced me to spend COUNTLESS hours going over my music library on the old PC to make sure everything is the exact same in each and every mp3 file. EVERY programming language in the last 20 years allows you to do case insensitive comparisons...( strcmp, stricmp anyone? ).
5) Ya know, my list is MUCH longer then this, but for the life of me, now that I'm sitting here to rant/ask how to overcome some of these issues, I can't think of them... Story of my life.
Just alot of "little" things like this that make it feel very.. "clunky" to me. I love some of the features, but some of the little unrefined parts are just a pisser.
Jailbroken / rooted what ever. Yes I was jailbroken on my iphone and yes I'm rooted on the GNote.
1. Try GO Contacts or Dialer One(from Market)
2. No can do my friend. Personally I don't think so.
3. Again, Go Contacts or Dialer One
4. Umm... Alternative music player? WinAmp, PowerAmp, DoubleTwist etc.(I don't know why, but that didn't happen on my phone)

This is a samsung touchwiz issue/feauture. I first had an HTC desire then I got a Samsung Galaxy S2, the hardware is great but the software still (after a year of owning the SGS2) feels pretty rough, unlike HTC's Sense

Sygic and Navigon are there I guess only TomTom is missing; If you really miss a feature in Sygic usually if you post it in the forum you will find a in an update with 2-3 months.

2. Really, I've used a friend's iPhone and the apps honestly are the same. I'm not sure what you are talking about...? Google Maps with Navigation Beta is an awesome free navigation system. It's gotten me out of messes just fine. And I think your audio issue is a problem with your OEM. Mine handles lowering the volume just fine. Maybe try another ROM?
3. The numbers are different due to a number of issues. Gosh, how do I explain this.... Ok. All outside-of-area code numbers are now supposed to be dialed as 1 (555) 201 2222 instead of (555) 201 2222 to help the system establish the country. This is especially true for landlines. Since you're on an international phone it helps to add the 1 (or even +1).
So just make it a habit to add +1. So enter it as +15552012222.
I hope that helps.
A couple ICS roms are ready for the Note although they are beta(so what? i used CM9 as my daily driver when it was just in alpha stage!)
Maybe try them first
You mentioned you were running CM9, is that ready in any "reliable" form for the i717? ( I don't have the international , I'm in the USA with "good old" at&t ).
I would love to have the ability to set my own image for my artists in Google Play Music. The ones that Google supplies are blurry & LQ. I can pay a little ($20) as an incentive for someone who can create an app or find a hack that will allow me to do this. Please respond to this thread.
I use Album Art Downloader from Play Store to find and set album arts. But you have to clear the app 's data anytime you use it so the new changes appear. Give it a shot and see if you like it.

Thanks for taking time to respond but I'm looking for ARTIST images. For example the artist Kerli, not the album Love is Dead.
ARTIST image
I too have been searching quite a bit for artist image editing in Google play Music...
Have checked many droid forums, scoured articles and FAQs, queried google's help database. There are quite a few other posts asking this question!
In pretty much every forum or database query, the first response given is advice on setting *album* art.
============
So far i have not found any sort of in-app way of doing this...
...which is, come on face it, is very important, NOT for the reason some may assume! Its not because I want/need my own choice of artwork necessarily, its because some of the artist images google puts in are INCORRECT or dubious. (and others while technically correct are poor "press" shots of the artist, for instance sitting with a pet cat... SNORE!!)
I would even be satisfied with simply turning off/on artist image so I don't have to keep seeing John Williams face as the label for my star wars collection, or some kind of spanish language tutorial for a french electronic band!

I can't believe there isn't a huge internet furor over this huge oversight!
I get that legal copyright licensing issues have to be considered. I would be happy to choose from a menu of legally approved images instead putting my copies of pictures in. (or just turn off the image)
But how is every user with a fair sized collection NOT NOTICING incorrect artist images??? I suppose a great many collectors are single-song and genre-mix types who don't necessarily browse their music by album or by artist, so i get that...
But still a HUGE number of people *do* browse by groups, artists often! And have tagged and cataloged libraries, its a hobby. Like when i collected CDs back in the day. And it is very frustrating to have all that nice organization ruined by a big fat wrong image not of your own choosing!!!

Those reading bear in mind we are talking specifically about GOOGLE PLAY MUSIC (mine is current and updated, august 2013 as of this writing)
by the way, this is whole issue is a first world issue.lol. We're complaining about an awesome free app. Other than this small cosmetic flaw, google music is quite very nice! Very slick looking on phone, fast and uncluttered interface... +1 for sure.
Where is the artist info(bio etc) in the google play music I can't find it. I tried selecting to go to artist but it just shows top songs, albums and related artist no bio. I remember it being there somewhere and the info being the same as spotify but now it's gone , I tried several big artists to make sure
Anyone?
bumb
Not a single user of Google music on this forum?
3 bumbs and 2 days later and not a single reply to such a simple question...
Why is no ons answering thuis simpele question?
I've noticed that they are missing as well.
Most likely its one of two things here;
1) Google may have decided to remove the artist info pages feature temporarily or permanently. If this is the case what we could do is get people asking for the feature again on feedback and reviews.
2) the artist info pages may be missing due to a problem in a recent update. If this is the case all we can do is report it to Google, and wait to see if it's back in the next couple updates they roll out
I hope this helps you with this
So I was on 4.12 with stockplayer android.
Was having the time of my life.
Had 135 songs which I renamed like this:
*usual file name of a soundtrack, like 01 - battle. mp3* or whatever
I added a number and space before the title of the track.
So I would have
1,2,3,4,5,6 etc.
This worked swell on 4.12 with stockplayer.
Now I updated to a different custom rom, with 4.4.4
Going back is no option for me.
The problem is only like 20 songs are detected of my map!
And they are not in the right order! So I don't understand **** why this is happening.
A friend told me it might be ID3 tags or something.
So I ran mp3tag and removed all info and named it under one "artist"
So I could find it easily. This time only 40 songs...
Tried Poweramp but it's even worse there, even more out of order... even if I press order alphabetical A-Z
Im having the GREATEST difficulty to just get this to work.
I don't know how what to do... Im pretty mad now actually cuz this is so important to me.
Is there way to install the old stock player from android 4.12?
Or some other way to EASILY look/search/play what I put in one folder?
