I'm bone stock with just a handful of apps installed and nothing that should be killing my battery. I've got lots of screen shots here in hopes that someone will be able to tell me what's going on. At noon Eastern, I took the phone off the charger at 100%. Wifi was left on and I sat the phone down on my desk for about 2 hours. I then captured these screen shots.
BetterBatteryStats shows a pretty serious (I think) kernel wakelock.

After tapping on "suspend_backoff", this was displayed. What the hell is "suspend_backoff"?
Under Partial Wakelocks, this was displayed.
The built in power monitoring shows this.
And tapping on Android OS yields this screen. Clearly, something is keeping the thing from going to sleep.
Finally, this is from SystemPanel and it shows that during the 2-hour period, the CPU was consistently doing SOMETHING. Curiously, however, during the overnight there was virtually no drop in voltage while I slept. I turn off wifi and 3G when I go to sleep so I'm thinking there is something related to wifi that is keeping the cpu cranking.
Sorry for all the captures, but if anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.
Thanks!
What widgets do you have on your homescreens? Pretty sure "suspend backoff" is time the phone is not able to deep sleep so you definitely have something going on.

The only "active" ones I have are BatteryLife, BetterBatteryStats and Palmary Weather. I'll delete them one at a time and see if that allows it to sleep. Seeing as the inability to sleep appears to be tied to wifi, it could be Palmary Weather causing the problem, so I'll remove it first.
Thanks for the help!

I would try removing the batterylife widget first. Many battery widgets are known to cause sleep issues. But either way you can start narrowing down the culprit.
I was having that issue with the suspend backoff as well. What sort of widgets are you using, do you have any other battery monitoring apps? (EDIT: I see your newer posts above). I was wondering if the Bettery battery stats was keeping the phone awake. Because after I turned off all the battery monitoring apps/widgets I got better unplugged/screen time.
If it is a wifi issue, try turning the options of Wifi always on to allow wifi to sleep. (In wifi advance options).

I can attest to this. That battery widget keeps the phone awake because it takes 'mah' readings every ten minutes.
Using battery monitoring I went from a 67 to 41 battery life overnight. Last night I froze all the battery monitoring things and I went from a 67 to 64. (But I had some other tweaks as well).
I could be wrong, but I don't think it is either of the battery widgets, unless of course they use wifi for something. At night, with wifi off, the battery voltage stays virtually flat. If it were the batt widgets, wouldn't they continue to cause the voltage to drop?
I removed the weather widget and am letting it sit for an hour or so. I'll report back with the results.

I wish I had a screen shot to show you. But one of my battery widgets kept reported every ten minutes with the same voltage (flat) but the phone wasn't being allowed to go into deep sleep. Around -130mah. My deep sleep time overnight was like 8 minutes.
The widget/app I was using was "Battery Monitor Widget". It was definitely keeping my phone from going into a deep sleep. I froze it last night and my battery life stayed constant throughout the night.
You have to figure out why your phone isn't being allowed to go into deep sleep when the screen is off.
Are you using "SmartSync" on any e-mail accounts? I've read that it causes WakeLock in some cases (I think related to how it manages data connections in conjunction with sync frequency).
It has to be something causing the phone from going into a deep sleep. Do you have any eye-popping items from the 'alarms' and 'process' sections of better battery stats? I would check for wake counts more than actual time.

You might be on to something. Deep Sleep is zero.
From the op his alarm manager has a count of 743. Not sure if that could be attributing. If you believe wifi has something to do with it make sure you uncheck "best wifi performance" or whatever it is called under advanced wifi settings as that has caused wake locks on previous htc devices including the og evo.

There is also an option under the advance wifi options for keeping Wi-Fi on during sleep. I have mine checked to 'only when plugged in'.
But I don't think it would be the wifi that keeps the device from going to deep sleep. Something is either syncing or keeping it from going to sleep, hence the suspend_backoff. If it is something syncing you should check your alarm/process counts.
For me I know that the one battery widget was definitely keeping a wakelock.

We have a winner! This is definitely what was causing the problem. I deselected this option and the suspend_backoff item stopped growing. I left it deselected for a couple of hours just to make sure. As soon as I re-enabled it, the suspend_backoff quantity started climbing again. Thank you very much for your help and thanks for everyone else who shared their ideas. I truly love this place.
Instead of posting screen shots, post a BBS dump. It's in the menu. it contains all the info of the screen shots and more. Make sure you give BBS root permissions too, it'll gather more info (alarms and processes).

Good to hear you got it resolved! I have no idea why htc includes this option as i have never seen it cause any performance gains. All i have ever seen it do is cause wakelocks and poor battery life.

This solved it for me and pretty much gives me back the 50% battery life that vanished when I turned it on.
Many thanks.
My Samsung Galaxy S2 Battery drains heavily all of a sudden. I noticed that suspend backoff is consuming battery. It doesnt go into deep sleep either. I have attached Battery Stats dump file. Please advise.

my phone was fully charged, i went to a movie so it was off most of the time. before it started i sent a few text messages, checked twitter for a few min. but for 80% of that time, id say, it was in my pocket with the screen off.

Probably just a rogue app running in the background that got hung up. Chances are either rebooting your phone or killing all open apps (hold the home button to bring that up) will solve your issue.
its been doing it for a few days, not just this one time, this is just the only screen shots of it i have taken. i'll try a reboot, because im not sure if if have done that or not. but i have killed off all apps and it still drains it
this happened to me a few days ago, i fully charged the phone while deleting all the recent "iffy" apps that i got that couldve caused this, then once phone was fully charged and apps were gone i did a battery pull and it seemed to fix the problem. not that any of that is a 100% fix obviously but like said before it can be an app that is doing it just running/crashing in the background. click on the android system in the battery menu and see if any of the programs coming up are anything new or look bad.
Beware of the Facebook app. I noticed that it always runs about 8% to 30% CPU usage, even on my old Sprint Galaxy S2 running on ICS You either have to kill it with the task manager each time your done or just uninstall it and go into Facebook using the browser. I noticed on Gingerbread that wasn't an issue. If you are running the Facebook App, check its CPU usage. Also check the usage of any other running apps. They will alarm as "yellow" or "Red" when they are over a certain percentage.
You know, this seems to be a bug for a lot of people. I'm running Blazer rom 1.6 and had this issue earlier today. There's a couple of other people too who have gotten this bug. To fix it, I just reset my phone when I it was at 2% then once it was at 1% I recharged my phone completely. It seems to have fixed itself doing that. This is some weird bug tho.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
I did a reset, and am charging over night to get a full charge. will see how it goes tomorrow. If its still bad i'll try resetting it around 1-2% then recharging, see it that will reset whatever is causing it to drain so fast.
Hi all,
I also notice this and this were the steps that I did and seems to help me to reduce this process to like 5 %. I'm on Sprint S3 but should be the same for the all carriers.
Go ahead and open Talk application. You should see your account in green (I'm not using this application) then hit the menu and then select sigh Off. Make sure that your account changes to Offline (sometimes it is change back it self so open one more time make sure that it says Offline). Then what else I change is in wi-fi advanced options: under Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep I choose Only when plugged in option. then I reboot the phone and from now on (almost 2 days) my Android system process show up only 5% of usage and my battery life improve significantly. I hope this will helps.
Thanks
ok thanks, i will try this.
I logged out of google talk, then hard closed out of the app. Set wifi to only stay connected while sleeping when connected to power. Ive had my phone off the charger for an hour and 45 min. With 25 min of screen time and my battery is down to 70%. Android system is taking up 60% of the battery. And double twist took up 24% I have airsync and airplay turned off. This is driving me crazy, I'm getting like 6 hours of total battery life that's with about 4 and a half hours of it being asleep.

exact same thing is happening to me. I flashed into a custom rom yesterday and had amazing battery life, and today the same old crap I had on stock.. same thing you're experiencing, is back. I bought autorun manager in the play store today and basically turned everything off. I'll see if that helps tomorrow.
so far it seems to have worked today.
I had this problem as well - traced it to an awesome app called "Birthdays" from the Play Store. Some bug with the otherwise great app was killing my battery. 10-15% drop without use, per hour. If I were to reboot it would go away for about 24 hours then suddenly battery starts plummeting again. Once I uninstalled the app, my battery was stable once again.
it also seems like keeping facebook completely disabled with autorun manager is helping a lot
I've seen these throughout the forums and we are lacking one of our own!
This is how (i hope) you can get better battery life and what i use personally to get my phone to last through the day
1. If your not using it then turn it off! GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi
-Minus the screen these are the biggest battery killers and if you don't need them then turn it off
2.Auto brightness is not your friend. Use a set brightness to your liking below 50%
-I see people claiming it helps and truth is it doesn't, It enables an added sensor to monitor the amount of light outside and guess what? That kills your battery too. You're better off using a widget or some other method to change your brightness on the fly to avoid this
3.Data and Background syncing.
-If you can afford to turn your Data connection off when you're not using it i suggest getting into the habit! This can drastically improve your battery life. For those who can't i suggest adjusting your sync intervals so they aren't checking as often
4.Put Your Phone Down!
-Yes we can all agree your phone can be a fun toy to play with but if you need it to last then put it down! Stop checking it every five minutes just to look at the screen! you have notifications for a reason and your background isn't going look better if you keep looking at it
5. Live Wallpapers
-Live wallpapers are fun to show off especially to Iphone owners but it comes at a price, Show them what it can do then go back to your boring wallpaper to save battery
6.Rogue apps
-There are many apps in the market to help you find these silent battery killers. Find one and uninstall them.
Apps like Facebook also kill your battery horribly, Use the web page instead if you don't need to know what everyone is posting at every second
7.Turn off animations/Haptic feedback
-I personally don't do this but it has been proven that these features do kill your battery
8. Task killers
-This hasn't been a problem more recently but if this does apply, uninstall the dang thing and stop killing every app that pops up! If the app keeps running in the background then just uninstall it
9. Find the rom that suits your needs
-To each their own, find the rom that better suits your daily life. I agree Its awesome to run the cutting edge software on our phones but if you need your phone for daily use then maybe stock/debloated is what you need
10.Extended battery/carry a charger
-If the stock battery just doesn't cut it then it's probably time to invent in an extended battery, and if you're like me and that still doesn't cut it then carry a charger with you to give you and extra boost. When your on the side of the road with a dead phone because you had to run AOSP and it killed your battery you will wish you had this
Summary: In the end It's just fancy phone with an HD screen so it was inevitably a battery killer from the start so good luck
If you have anything to add (Apps or suggestions to help) then don't be afraid to speak up this is a community effort

You may be correct that it isn't very effective at saving battery, but I think that's only because it never dims far enough, compared to other devices I have where auto-brightness seems far more effective.
Also, I'm almost positive that turning off auto-brightness does not disable the light sensor. You can turn off auto-brightness and use a sensor probing app to verify that it is still indeed functioning.
Pretty much everything else makes sense to me. I have tons of widgets but most of them are simply information and don't really need to poll anything or use many resources most of the time.
Strangely enough, I've been really noticing my battery die quickly every once in awhile recently, and when I check it seems that Google Maps has been going crazy in the background and won't close.. very strange. A reboot usually solves the problem for a few days til it happens again.

I used to think that auto-brightness was killing my battery, but from doing some informal tests I actually found very little difference in battery life using 25-50% brightness versus auto-brightness. I'd be interested if other people have different experiences.
Actually I've noticed that Google Maps also keeps waking up my phone and using the GPS recently. What ROM are you on? I'm on Viper 1.0.3.

I think the tweaks on Newt's Rom has an option to change the scaling of the auto-brightness, meaning that you move the whole scale down so that it is dimmer at given light levels than stock. I'm not sure if it ever goes to full value though and that would disappoint me on sunny days.
In regards to the Facebook app, you can disable notifications and auto polling...

Think I have a solution for short battery life for Nook! (Really for any android device)
The problem has been that the Nook Tablet does not go to a Deep sleep (even if they say its fixed its not). Every night I have to charge the Nook battery because it goes from 100% to 90% overnight. If the Nook sits all day with no use the battery will drop to 85%. Almost a 20% decrease in power in one day of no use. By the second day battery is down to 50% and forget it if I use the Nook.
This app seems to solve the problem!
I downloaded a free app (Google App store) called “CPU Tuner (rooted phones)” you need to be rooted but for most of us here this is not an issue.
This app allows you setup CPU speed, WiFi and other settings for different states the Nook may be in.You can setup several triggers but I only used 1. The problem is not just having the Nook go into Deep Sleep but to turn off other functions that hit the battery e.g. WiFi and sync. With this app you are able to tell the Nook to go into Airplane mode as well as turning off all other features that may consume battery life. Below is my setup and findings.
State 1: “On Power (Plugged in)” WiFi on, Sync on, airplane mode off and CPU set to 1020mhz Governor set to interactive
State 2: “On Battery” WiFi on, Sync on, airplane mode off and CPU set to 1020mhz Governor set to interactive (same as above)
State 3: “Screen off” WiFi off, Sync off, airplane mode on and CPU 600mhz Governor set to conservative
State 4: “Screen Lock” WiFi off, Sync off, airplane mode on and CPU 600mhz Governor set to conservative (Same as above)
With these settings (and having 3 nooks with CM10 to test) here are my numbers
test stared around 10pm
Nook 1 started with 76% batt (CPU Tuner not installed)
Nook 2 started with 85% batt (CPU Tuner not installed)
Nook 3 started with 90% batt (CPU Tuner installed)
checked battery life at 8am next morning.
Nook 1 65% batt
Nook 2 75% batt
Nook 3 91% batt (Yes it went up 1%)
Later in the day with no use 8pm still 91%
Loaded CPU Tuner on all three Nooks started test at 10pm. (Day 2)
Nook 1 started at 96%
Nook 2 started at 74%
Nook 3 started at 83%
Checked battery life at 8am next morning.
Nook 1 ended at 96%
Nook 2 ended at 75%
Nook 3 ended at 83%
As you can see this is a big difference then losing 20% power overnight. Since I have Screen Off and Screen Lock as the same trigger I don’t lose power if I am just checking batt level or the time.
This is a MUST HAVE APP. easy to setup and makes a big difference.
You can also setup it up so that if you are on the battery the CPU is at 1008mhz which will save battery life while in use and when plugged in CPU can go to 1020mhz giving you full power.
Sorry for such a long post but I felt it was good info for the users.

I do know it's a problem in some ROMs, and often a problem along the way during development. I think it's grocely unfair to suggest it's a general problem though.
I'm running a CM10 build from 1231 and I have not problems what-so-ever with battery life! I hardly loose anything while on standby (wifi off). I do turn it off manually, and I understand that with this app I can have it done automatically which is very neat, so might use it because of that. The processor speed adjustments works just fine anyway in the ROM i use.
It's great to know this thing exists and does work if I want to try a "work in progress" ROM more extensively. So once again :good:
The "battery-drain while asleep" problem got fixed since early December (e.g., Succulent's v12/08 build).
Also, I simply turn off WiFi (using a WiFi on/off widget) when I am not accessing Internet, and my NT's battery consumption while asleep has been well below 1% a day (comparable to that of my Google N7).
Finally, for those who are interested in battery consumption management tools, I find Battery Juice Defender (which I use on my Samsung GS-II phone) reasonably effective yet easy to use.
Sorry it was not meant to be a dig or insult!!!
I love ALL of the work that the developers have done and I think I have changed my ROM about a half a dozen times because I can't figure out which one I like best. But compared to my wife's Nook with just the B&N ROM her battery could last days where my battery only lasted 1 day.
Please; I did not mean anything insulting with the comment and the fact that these developers can put together such solid ROMs is saying something about their skills.
How I found this App was from posts here where users were saying that they had to turn off WiFi. Trying to make a WA or KA (WA = Wife Approved and KA = Kid Approved) I know that going in and turning on and off WiFi was never going to happen.
When installed the CPU Tuner and found that it was going to do this automatically and on top of this battery life goes from 1 day to several days I had to make a comment. Only after a few days of my kids using the Nook with the CPU Tuner they made comments about how long the battery lasted. Using these ROMs and CPU Tuner made the Nook 100% WA & KA and now wife is using Nook with the Hashcode ROM and I have heard no complaints. Happy wife, happy life.
Again sorry

V;
I have uploaded the screen shots. All settings can be changed after loading so if you select the wrong item its not a problem.
I try to keep it simple, You can have more then 1 configuration but as you can see I just use 1. I set my user experience to Normal which can be changed in the settings.
Once you start CPU tuner you will see the current state of the Nook. You can select a different state. (Note the battery was at 52% which has been at 52% for about 2 days and just charged it this morning.)
Next you will see triggers; here you set what Profiles you want for different states of the Nook. Just tap in that section. I forgot to take a screen grab. But I have battery at 100, "On Battery" = Normal, "Screen Locked" = Powersave, "Screen Off" = Powersave and "On Power" = Performance. "Battery Hot" = Powersave and "Call in progress" = Performance. I really only need two profiles Performance and Powersave my Normal has the same settings as Performance and my Screen Off (which I don't use) has the same setting as Powersave.
Next are the profiles. tap the profile you want to edit. See screen shot 7-10 these images have my profile settings. I don't trust airplane mode to really shut off all that I want off so I make sure that things I want disabled are disabled and when I go into Performance I disable airplane mode and enable WiFi (Not sure what Background Sync is or if it even works on the Nook most times I keep it off especially for the "Screen Off" and "Powersave" profiles)
For the governors I leave it as interactive for "Full Speed" and "Normal" settings and conservative for "Save Battery" and Extreme Save Battery these may be the default I am not sure.
If I wanted to really go crazy. I could set my Normal CPU speed to 1008mhz to save battery life while on battery. I could also setup it up that if I have 100% battery use Performance Profile and when the battery level drops to 70% use Normal profile (with CPU at 1008mhz) and when the battery goes to 60% then create a new profile which lowers the CPU speed even more. But with my current setup I am very happy and the fact that after a few days of no use the Nook still has the same power level from when I last had it on.
That's about it. If you have any questions let me know.

Is there any way to delay (eg I want it to wait 5 min before turning the WiFi off)? Or should I use tasker or automateit for something like this?

You can setup a profile where if you press the power button the CPU speed is reduced and turn off all features except WiFi. I believe that after 5 minutes (or what ever time you have set for "Sleep" I believe the default is 2 minutes) the Nook will go to sleep and all features for Sleep will take over e.g. No WiFi.
This will give you two Power options:
1. let the Nook go to sleep on its own after 5 minutes (Screen would be on during this time killing battery life)
2. Press the power button and screen turns off but WiFi is still on and after 5 minutes sleep all features off.
You can monitor what it's doing by pressing the power button and waiting about 6 minutes. Then go to the CPU Tuner log (shift pages to the left until you see the log page) What you would want to see is the following:
11:08am ALL-> Performance
11:07am All-> Powersave
11:01am All -> Screen Off
11:00am ALL-> Performance
Please note that since the time is only shown as hours and minutes it possible to see settings with the same time stamp.
Good Luck.
If you have any questions please let me know.
Fantastic, exactly what I am looking for :good:
I must say that the OP was very good, and CPU Tuner is a great app ....
but times, and apps move on.
currently I use the free "Battery Doctor" from Google Play which does what Tuner can do, but in a much user friendlier way.
my tablet only loses 1 to 2% overnight and still has 80% or so left if not used for a few days.
the developer also has a great file cleaner utility which i also use, and the Task Killer, and memory cleaner widgets you get.
in my opinion they are MUST have's, and I no longer even use the paid version of Juice defender that was my favorite app.

I'm running CM11 Snapshot M3 and haven't been able to find a user friendly way to automatically get wifi off during sleep.
The built-in "turn off wifi during sleep" setting does not seem to be working.
Battery Doctor (Battery Saver) doesn't seem to work well on this ROM. After installing, it would seem to let me change the screen brightness (the slider would move), but then it would revert back to 20%. The app then crashed, and attempting to run it again after rebooting results in a black screen of death.
I've tried a couple other apps like WiFi Auto-Off and Advanced Battery Saver - Free, and neither succeeded in shutting off wifi during sleep.
Granted, I did not try CPU tuner with this ROM. I've tried it in the past and found it very unfriendly.
Anyone have a user friendly method to automatically get wifi off during sleep on CM11?

I decided to give CPU Tuner another shot and it seems to work some of the time. I haven't been able to figure out what the difference is between the times it works and the times it doesn't.

I just use the available quick toggles in CM11 to manually (1) switch off WiFi and (2) go to sleep.
Yes, there is a quick toggle for go to sleep.
I've pretty much have gave up on ever having great battery life on my Nook. Just the nature of the beast Still a great little tablet
Since all those apps automate disable wi-fi when system sleeps and you won't get any notifications if android apps. try to poll data from internet, I just set wi-fi to automatically turn off in android wi-fi advanced menus, there is no need of any of those apps since android system can do the same thing.
Nookt Tablet goes Nuts less than 50% Battery
Currently running CM 11 snapshot 5
Whenever my nook gets below 50% battery it goes nuts. apps open themselves, then shut down, windows open, if I am watching a video it stops then begins at the beginning. Weird.
Have had this issue before and was hoping with the upgrade it would stop, but no dice.
Help?

I have the same issue with my Nook Tablet. I will get to about 43% and it flips out. Apps opening, settings opening, Apps close, airplane mode comes, etc. I have to plug it back in to undo the mess and continue using it. I've had this issue with AndoidForNook's builds as well as the CM-acclaim 10.2.1 build.

Just since yesterday, my phone has consumed battery really fast.. usually i would have only finish one set of battery in a day, but i'm experiencing battery drainage of like ~30% in 1.5hours, and that's even without using my phone (sleep mode).. my phone seems to heat up very easily, and i could feel my phone's heat most of the time in my pocket..
i dont think it's the battery's problem as i have tried with my spare battery, and both battery displayed the same problem.. so it seems that the problem might lies in my phone..
Also, i have noticed that recently my phone takes quite a long time to respond to certain commands, like when i tapped my phone with the NFC tag to bring out the media player, it takes like 10mins later to automatically play the song (prior to this problem, almost immediately)
i also read up about the Sudden Death issue in SGS3, and i'm afraid that this might be the pre-bricked syndrome, and i would like to backup my data and apps.. does anyone know of a good and reliable app for backup?
*i didnt root my phone or flashing any roms

Sounds like you got some pretty nasty wakelocks, use BetterBatteryStats and try to locate the issue. Or something is wrong with the set-up of your phone. Check and recheck!

without root it will be difficult to (1) find the battery drainer and (2) backup data.
should you decide to root you could use BetterBatteryStats as mentioned and for backups (1) Titanium Backup (Apps & data) and (2) a CWM nandroid (full phone backup with anything on it).

I have got exactly the same problems as you, it started a few days ago so I'm guessing some app update has screwed something. The symptoms I'm seeing are:
Battery drains from 100% to flat in about 4 hours without any phone use and while screen is off (normally lasts easily 24 hours).
Phone is warm to the touch (not hot, but warm) even when idle.
Long delays in processing Bluetooth button presses through to my audio app (~45 seconds for PowerAmp to respond), and also similar with my three-button cabled headset button presses.
15-30 second delays in updating widget icons on homepages (e.g. wi-fi on/off icon status changing, NFC Task Launcher's 'last used' wording on the widget, etc).
Delays in clock updating (the system clock in the upper-right of info bar).
Battery info for Android System shows the "Stay awake" time is almost as long as the current "phone on battery" time. So something seems to be wakelocking and stopping it going to sleep properly.
I'm going to check more now to see if I can find the culprit, but if anyone knows anything about this, please could they post here too? Thanks.

It's always possible, but I doubt it. I'm pretty careful about the source of what I install and check that apps are the genuine item rather than trojan copies. I do install some betas from known xda developers, but I trust them fully. Nothing new was installed around the time when this started anyway.
Attached wakelock info is for the last 3 hours since phone was charged. I'm aware of a possible DHCP-searching issue with the wlan_rx_wake process, but this problem occurs just as badly with wi-fi turned off too - and as I said, this battery drain issue has only been happening for a few days.

I wonder what we all have in common then, as it sounds like whatever happened hit us all at around the same time? I'm guessing it's being caused by an app update, I'll see if I can list what has updated on my phone in the last 7 days.

OK, I just checked what apps updated themselves during this time period (from 16 March onward, checked using Quick System Info Pro) and they are as follows:
22 March: BBC News, Bubble Blast, Facebook, NFC Task Launcher*, Ustream, CurrentWidget, Angry Birds (Space), AndChat
23 March: Samsung Account*, SCloudStarter, HD Widgets
24 March: Adobe Reader, Compass, Whats App, Flipboard*, Titanium Backup, Nobel Dialer, Angry Birds (Star Wars), Angry Birds (Seasons), PowerAmp
25 March: Google+*, FourSquare
Mostly fairly common apps, but maybe there's something in there that might help?

Possibly, I got another gmail update today though, so I don't know the previous history now.
I'm on T-Mobile UK as carrier by the way, in case that matters (could be a Fast Dormancy issue or somesuch).

I am glad I'm not the only one - my apps in red. I first noticed this problem on Saturday 23rd and it's driving me nuts. I'm only getting 5 hours of use out of the phone because something is preventing it from going into deep sleep. In addition to the phone getting warm as others have said, I have also noticed some other issues:
sms messages take ages to send
clicking the keyboard switcher in the notifications takes ages to show list
clicking refresh on weather widget takes ages before gps icon appears and weather info hardly ever updates. However if you click on the weather widget and open up the full screen it refreshes quickly.
Clicking the software update button to check for firmware updates takes ages to show the popup.
sometimes the screen doesn't turn on instantly on pressing the power button
most other things are performing at normal speed
I have tried various things but still haven't nailed the problem. I used BBS to see what was causing the wakelocks and it had Google+ AlarmManager and LocationServices at the top. I disabled both of these and it helped a bit, but after doing this BBS had a list of partial wakelocks which didn't add up to the total time the phone was awake. I tried uninstalling Facebook and BBC News and that didn't really make much difference.
UPDATE - just uninstalled HD Widgets and keyboard select popup, weather update, software update are now instant again. Maybe this is the problem with battery drain too. I didn't try that before because I'm not actually using any of the widgets so I'll see how it goes...
Solved by uninstalling HD Widgets
Seems to have done the trick. Spends much more time in deep sleep now and gpsd is now top of the list on the Battery usage whereas before it was Google+. Hopefully HD Widgets will release an update soon.

Great news. I've just removed HD Widgets from my phone too (I've used Beautiful Widgets for some time now so it was a waste of space anyway) and certainly the responsiveness of widgets is much faster, and headset button controls are working instantly again. Battery life I'll know in the morning, as with car Bluetooth controls, but it's certainly looking promising so far.

I believe removing HD Widgets did the trick. First I uninstalled all apps that I didn't need or hadn't used in a while. Secondly I tried to uninstalling all Samsung apps, but as I am not rooted, no success. Sammy apps was my prime suspect as they had just updated. None of it changed the battery drain. I also had battery drain of about 20-25% per hour without phone usage.
It was HD Widgets that was causing problems, uninstalling helped. Afterwards, I can now see the battery curve steepness flattened quite dramatically afterwards. The awake process bar in the battery explanation is no longer solid. The phone made it through the night without any problems.
Thank you guys, much appreciated

:good: and world is safe again
everything back to normal
HD Widgets have just released version 3.9.1 according to Google Play, which is trying to address the battery drain issue. If anyone here has not yet uninstalled the app, could they try this update first and see if that resolves the problem as the devs are looking for confirmation?
(I can confirm that the March 23 update to HD Widgets was definitely the killer by the way - after I removed it last night, my phone had only dropped to 90% battery this morning after 7 hours asleep, and responsiveness and control buttons are all back to normal)

With the GN3's monster display, all the usable features, and the integration into our normal daily activities, I knew getting a FULL DAY unplugged would be the Holy Grail for this device. So I set out to find the settings, apps and tips that offered the most benefit of the device's features while still providing incredible battery life. These are based on a ROOTED, Verizon LTE, standard battery device (some settings are useful for Stock, non-Rooted devices as well)
ONCE a month I will run the battery down to <5% then charge it to 100% without interruption. The rest of the time I charge the battery when it reaches between 20-30%. With a ton of reading, THIS method seems to be the universal middle ground to keep your GN3 battery healthy, and get the most charges out of it.
Here's what I've found so far: feel free to add your input on what works for you!
Basic, Easy To Adjust Settings:
Display Brightness: 50-75% (Auto - Off)
This usually more than enough for normal use, and with most Custom Roms having a Brightness Quick Toggle, or a Brightness slider in the Notification Bar, it is very easy and quick to change this setting to watch videos or in bright light situations.
Turn Off GPS In Location Settings
Many of us use GPS regularly, but very few of us need it on 24/7. Believe it or not, GPS constantly correcting position, and constantly updating apps using location info takes a lot of power over the period of an entire day. Manually activating GPS is a quick toggle away when it is needed.
Turn Off SYNC In Google settings
Syncing a bazillion apps every 30 min or few hours adds up at the end of a full day! When I check my email, FaceBook, Twitter, Weather, Stocks, (you get the picture) I just sync THAT app. If I am doing a mass information check, I'll SYNC ALL, but I do it manually.
Most feel the need for email, FaceBook, Twitter updates to be instantaneous and constant. IF constant connectivity is your goal, and it is certainly your choice, just realize it won't come with great battery life. It's about balance. I believe my settings find a good middle ground between ALWAYS ON and ZERO FUNCTION.
Screen Timeout In Display Setting - Set To 30 Seconds
This one saves the power button AND battery, and it's self explanatory.
Power Saving Mode In Settings
Power Saving Mode give you the option to limit CPU performance, use lower power consumption in the display, and turning off haptic feedback (vibrate on key touch, etc) ALL which require additional power, reducing battery life. If you need one of these to be changed, easy access and toggling makes the change quick and simple.
Turn Off Wi-Fi Settings
For additional batt life, go to settings > wi-fi > soft menu key > advanced > uncheck Wi-Fi Notification & Always Allow Scanning. Some users report noticeable increase in batt life unchecking these settings.
Turn ON Smart Network (rom specific)
Turn on Smart Network in settings>more settings to aid in extending battery life. Simply put, Smart Network temporarily turns off the network after a period of non-use, and when your device screen is turned on again, it turns the network ON. This DOES NOT affect INCOMING calls, texts, or any INCOMING communications. It does take a second or two for the network to reconnect, but it is negligible and barely noticeable.
FREE Apps To Help Increase Battery Life:
GREENIFY - Play Store
This app basically gives you the ability to place apps that usually run in the background in a "Hibernate" state. When you click on the widget or the app to use it, it automatically "Wakes Up" and you have use of the app. After a period of inactivity that app places itself back into "Hibernation" until the next time you need it. Set up consists of downloading the app, highlighting the apps you do not want to constantly function in the background, and hitting the checkmark. UI for Gereenify is simple and very effective.
Better Battery Stats - Play Store
BBS gives you an overall view of what your battery is doing, what is using it the most, what is causing wake-locks and anything else going on with the battery. UI is fairly simple, knowing what to look for is probably the hardest part of using BBS. If an unknown app is keeping your device form going into DEEP SLEEP, you'll see it here. If an app is running your CPUs ragged, you'll see which CPU frequencies are being used and for how long.
Perfect System Monitor - Play Store
AS you can tell by the name, this app monitors most of your device's important system functions. The functions that can help you catch a battery hungry app are; CPU Frequency, Cpu Usage, Battery Voltage, Current Network Up and Download... If any app is acting a fool without you knowing it, or running in the background sending 150 other apps your Google stats sucking your battery life, this app will let you see in real time if something has your cpu pegged, your battery voltage pegged or your network active without you using it.
Extreme Battery Saving Measures:
Turn Off Notifications
Turn off NOTIFICATIONS from apps that frequently send notifications (Twitter, FaceBook, Instagram, etc.) When you open these apps they usually update themselves upon opening. Again, if staying in CONSTANT contact with every app is your goal, forget trying to save battery life
Turn Off Vibration
Self explanatory
Consolidate Widgets Into Folders
Individual WIDGETS each use a little power to connect themselves to the app they represent. When placed in FOLDERS, their individual "footprint" is reduced significantly as is the power required t display each widget. Instead of having 45 individual widgets on your home screen, consolidate similar widgets into FOLDERS. Creating a folder varies by Rom You can try long press on home screen, create or click FOLDER, name the FOLDER (optional), drag similar widgets into the folder.

Great advice bro. I got 1 day 17 hours and 4 hours screen on time and the only thing I turned off was the gps toggle and I greenify a lot of apps..smart network is always off, I never turn on power saving mode and display time is about the same as you as well as brightness. I'm going to try some of your advice and see how far I can go. Thanks great post.

If you have any tricks not mentioned here, certainly put them out there and I'll add em with credit!

Just thought it was worth mentioning that since our display is AMOLED a dark theme/background will also help reduce display battery drain. If a pixel is black the screen doesn't turn on that pixel. Check out http://www.techradar.com/us/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/the-galaxy-note-3-s-stunning-full-hd-super-amoled-display-explained-1196392 for a better explanation.
Mine doesn't have Smart Network.

Mine (stock rooted MJE) doesn't have smart network either. I see the OP is running Bean/Baja/Eclipse ROM, so it may be a feature added for that ROM.
That aside, smart network looks interesting, but reminds me of Juicedefender back when I used it with my DInc. Can anyone confirm that push notifications (that work through data) actually work with it? If they do work, I'm would flash one of those ROMs right now.

The only icon in the notification quick toggles with up and down arrows is the one for turning mobile data on and off. I can't find it either.

I thought this was a normal MJE update feature... try Baja Rom, Eclipse, or Jelly 'beans' by beanstown106...

@az_biker nice thread here bro. Guys the tips that az_biker has given everyone here is right on. We should all be able to get a full days use and not have to worry about charging through the day. I've been unplugging at 4am and streaming music all day over 3g in a factory and browsing forums and Web through the day and still have over half a battery at 8pm.

I get all my notifications, calls, texts, game updates, gmail alerts, and haven't seen ANY blocking/loss of functionality when using Smart Network. Logically if it prohibited any of those functions, no one would want to use it
Great thread boss!! Love the tips. Greenify is such a cool app. Thanks again for sharing this
