[Q] 72 Baseband on Gingerbread - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

I tried ICS 4.0.4 and also installed Baseband 72.
Now I restored my Gingerbread ROM, should I also downgrade the Baseband?

People on here will tell you that "The baseband must match the ROM" but I've not seen any actual reason for this, it's always just people just repeating something that someone else repeated etc etc.
I've got CM7.2-RC2 on my Ray with BB72 and I'm not having any issues.
Unless your phone isn't working properly you don't need to do anything.

Here's my understanding of this subject: A rom contains 'radio interface link' libraries (libril.so etc etc) which are written to work with a specific baseband. If you are running a baseband which is different to what the ril libs of your rom are looking for then the link may be broken/not made and cause connection problems and dropping of signal, it may also increase battery drain and effect performance. It is wise to have the correct baseband for the correct rom libs in order to reduce the chance of any probs and ensure you are getting full functionality of the radio interface.

It's very nice to see a technical explanation that makes sense.
Thank you very much for taking the time to write this up.

So the highest for .42 would be bb58?

[Q] Questions about Kernels

Hey anyone that's got some noob time, I was curious what exactly is a kernel, why are there different kernels, when to know if you need to use a different kernel and lastly instructions on how to flash a kernel. I am pretty experienced in dealing with my phone and I'm capable of bringing my phone back from ANY software brick with ODIN and I have been flashing ROMS for about 5 months. I recently was reading up on the Epic 4g forums because I was going to root my epic when I buy it and I noticed much more about kernels in the epic 4g forums. Any knowledge would be appreciated! Thanks!
Roms, Basebands and Kernels, a basic overview
The baseband is only the 'radio' part of the phone that makes the calls, the 3G and Wifi connections, GPS connections, etc. As you thought, it is totally separate from a ROM. Updating a ROM will not update a baseband and going back to an older ROM will not 'downgrade' the baseband either. Upgrades to a baseband my improve signal strength, call quality, maybe have software tweaks to improve battery life while on 3G/Wifi, etc - things like that.
Kernels are the core software code that allows CPU to over-clocking and controls voltage controls. Think of it like Bios settings on your computer (PC, that is)..that's really all they do. Now, a kernel can be completely separate from a ROM, but a new ROM contains a kernel in it so it will run. So, a kernel can be both separately applied from a ROM, but is also part of a ROM.
The ROM is basically everything else but the apps and the two things above. It's actually the OS, as well as any stock apps that come with it - and any new improvements, features, etc. The increasing build numbers reflect bug fixes, known issue solutions, feature improvements, etc...thing of them like windows service packs and/or any software update.
Some of the other phones modifying the kernel may be done more because the phone design and limitations
Hope that helps
Very helpful, I was sure to click thanks. I'm curious how to change the kernel on my phone and when should i consider changing it. Do I use ODIN to change the kernel? Also can any kernel work with any ROM? If not, how do I know which ROMs a specific kernel is compatible with?

Most kernels can be flashed just like a ROM, very few require ODIN and if it does the dev will specifically say so. Also not every kernel works with every ROM. However they are usually made to work with any ROM base don a version number. For example if a kernel is made for 2.2 than all ROMs that are made from 2.2 will work with it. The version number a kernel is meant to be used with is always in the OP of its thread.
And one last thing, if it is a kernel that has to be flashed via ODIN could someone give a step by step? I've got return to stock via ODIN memorized and I've done it plenty of times but not sure about the procedure for kernels.
Put the kernel in the PDA do not repartition, On a side note, when you are flashing things especially adding new kernels etc, It is better to go to recovery manually and do it from there. Sometimes the custom stuff or CWM have conflicts and it doesn't flash and you have to go odin back......... that's been my experience
so just use adb to get to stock recovery and then choose install packages? forgive me for my extreme detail

Have you been using 2.2.1 ROMs?? I always have to ODIN from 2.2.1 ROMs cause I can't wipe data from CWM on them. So when it gets to that part of flashing the ROM it freezes

[Q] Signal Fix

I posted a topic a few months ago about accidentally breaking the external antenna connector on the back of my Xperia X10, which caused me to no longer be able to get a signal.
I was told that in order to reset it so that it would connect to the network via the internal antenna, something would need to be done to the kernel.
Now that custom kernels can be loaded, can anybody tell me how I can fix my signal? if possible
Thanks

I'm not sure what the problem is really. If you have to get back to a stock rom, this might not be a bad idea, then use FlashTool and load a base band maybe the end of the 2.0 series - .52 - is the best choice, see how that goes and if it works wit the rom of your choosing. Of course the .58 baseband is the most stable and probably has the best reception.

Base Band Patch for Gingerbread roms

Use it when your baseband is 54+ and want to try out J's cm7 rom or rdannar's GB Miui rom or Arc rom.
Tested working on J016 and J017 and rdannar's GB Miui - for stock kernel only.
Do it at your own risk and it's not supported by J
Patch it with cm7bb54.zip
Restore back the original with cm7bb52.zip (if you decide to change base band)
This patch won't solve any problem that may come with the rom (such as wlod)
Note: This patch won't work on Trip's GB Miui
pls hit Thanks button if it helps you
I want to make sure I got this all correct:
1. If on bb.54+, flash cm7bb54.zip to patch/use cm7
2. If previously flashed to bb.52, flash cm7bb52.zip to go back to bb.54+
Would I have to flash each zip file every time I want to go back and forth between each rom?
Thanks cobrato!
1.correct
2. only if you decide to flash bb52 again(for any reason) and still want to use cm7 flash cm7bb52.zip
no. if you are flashing a new rom which requires bb54 and you are on bb54 then no need to flash this zip.
Can use this patch for bb.55 ?
I finally gave in and left FreeX10 to test out CM7.
It feels pretty stable but there's some issues I sense still need tweaking and I'll post after I'm done here.
QQ; what improvements have you sensed using .54 over .52, both in general and with CM7?
Personally i don't think there are any improvements. But some people just want a higher number. In fact some of the functions in .54 are broken like auto-time settings.

Not correct.....
If you are in north america .49/.52 causes many issues, especially when it comes to dropped calls , failed text messages and slow 3g+ speeds.
On .55 the failed text issue is fixed completely, I get much better call signal and faster 3g+.

Not without the new kernel, the only way it is possible is if the bootloader gets unlocked

Your usb port, or usb cable?
You can't install the kernel needed for GB without flashtool.
So if your usb port is broken, maybe look on ebay for spare parts to fix it.
If your usb cable is broken, buy a new one.
Good luck
sorry but how do i apply this patch? i'm on BB54 with a broken usb connector
i guess this might be (all steps via xrecovery)
1.- install patch
2.- install 2.3.3 rom (any rom available)
3.- install custom kernel (zKernel might be)
is this correct?
thanks in advance

need help matching RIL and modem

I have read that this might improve reception and battery life so I'm very much interested in matching that two to my phone.
I'm currently on temasek's 4.3 rom.
I live in Israel and ny provider is Orange.
I tied using getIRL but... I couldn't make it work.

I flashed a modem from that thread but GetRIL still tells me my RIL and baseband dont match
You cannot and must not flash a modem + ril on aosp roms. You cannot and must not use getril on aosp and regardless, worrying about rils us pointless and makes almost no difference.
On samsung roms, only bother looking into rils if you're having serious issues. Otherwise ignore.
Aosp roms use openril. Do not do anything about rils on aosp roms

the thing is, i get a lot of wakeclocks for reception related stuff. How can I solve them?
If better battery stats shows clearly that, change just the modem, without ril (in aosp Rom if you change the ril you won't have any reception/call at all) as long as you don't have the proper result.
Be sure it's not an app providing this flaws.

greenified everything that could have done that. I dont have many apps either. still, i don't know what modem I need and where I can download it since all I've seen is for 4.1.2.
By the way Im on 4.2.2
It doesn't matter. Try all modems (without ril). Modems are not tied to rom versions

Please help me
I was running Omni rom on my Galaxy s3.
I changed it to omega rom v46.1.
After I did that, I noticed my simcard wont read on my phone but would work perfectly on other phones....no simcard will read on my phone and I will just get an error message saying "not registered on network".
I downloaded GetRil and found out that my baseband and Ril do not match and I knew that this could be the only cause of the problem.
My Ril is I9300XXLE8
My baseband is I9300XXUFME7
Can someone please help me find the Ril that would match my baseband version.
THANK YOU!

[Q] Would a new kernel resolve radio issues?

I'm on Verizon. I tried installing both the GPE rom and cyanogenmod 10.2. When I do, I immediately encounter cellular issues. I'll lose cellular data often and require a recycle of mobile data. It was definitely worse on cm but I'm wondering if my issues stem more at the kernel level? Maybe the VZ stock kennel isn't compatible with these Roms? If so, is there a kernel you recommend?

Ok simple nope. a least something is wrong with the kernel, kernel have more to do with battery performance, display, smoothness scrolling and wifi to my understanding.
radios signal = to have the correct driver for the modem Ril (Radio Interface Layer)
