Whirring Sound - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hi guys so for some reason I can't take video anymore I believe hardware issue. Every time I try to record the camera top pieces makes an internal vibrating sound and live view mode is all blurry. Anyone know about this?
Would help and sometimes when I watch HD films or heavy duty games the screen freezes with looping audio clip. Prob also hardware
Rest of phone works fine please reply warranty already used once.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA

I've never had my camera make a whirring sound. With that being said it sounds like a hardware issue. But the only way to know is to obviously compare roms to see if its software related.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2

I'm pretty sure its hardware but how would I fix it? Sometimes when the flashlight is on it also makes the same sound. Warranty's gone so don't know how to DIY repair...
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA

Well I know absolutely nothing about fixing hardware on this beast . But what would seem like it would work is to buy a broken i777 for parts off ebay or something and figure out how to replace the camera or whatever u believe may be broken. Adam Outler is a boss when it comes to ripping these bad boys open he may be able to help.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2

My i777 has been doing that for months, almost the entire time I had it (got it in October). I thought it was common. It does it on every ROM I use. I don't know why the flashlight does it, but it must have something to do with focusing the camera. Sometimes when I open up the camera it look like a fisheye/wide lens, and makes the sound, until I tap to focus. And sometimes when I open the video camera it will make that sound and I have to switch to still pictures and focus and switch back. And even more weird sometimes when I open the camera for video it will look like I am looking through water, with wavy circles fluctuating, until I switch to stills, focus, and switch back.
Again I thought this happened to most. I don't have a problem 75% of the time, and you have to focus the camera anyway before you take a picture, so it resolves itself. It only is a real problem with video, but it happens with video far less often.
Guess I should try to get a replacement before my warranty runs out in October. Maybe like the Captivate, the early batches had some hardware issues, my wife and I both got Captivates with random reboot issue.
Sent from CM9 on my TouchPad

I dropped my phone once really badly with no visual damage and I believe after that it started. I have had almost identical issues with you but I believe most people don't get this issue. I can't record video anymore because of the wavy stuff and Yay I'm not alone! But my warranty was already used up so I guess I need to pry open my phone and deal with replacing something...

How can your warranty been used up? If you get a replacement the warranty is still valid for one year from purchase, as long as there is no water/physical damage.

+1.. I can confirm that your warranty (as long as your first purchase was new and not refurbished phone) is for one year regardless of how many replacements you need.

Wait really I remember that they replaced the main board and then it said 90 days after so really can anyone guarantee?

Did you ever use SetCPU
Just curious OP fengster, did you ever use setCPU?
And what softwares did you use? Post a list if you can.

I used the siyah kernel most of the time with extweaks and yes setcpu, but why do you ask?

The warranty is 90 days, or the remainder of the factory warranty, whichever is longer.

Poll: How many times have you exchanged your evo 3d - UPDATE OVER 70% - NO RETURNS

There are a lot a people arguing about flaws, build quality quality control and so on. Let's see how bad things are.
Edit: so ass this poll is going, we can see that many people either got a flawless or an acceptable condition phone the first time. Another factor is we have to remember that the average user does not go on XDA at all, I would tend to think people that go on forums like this are the more demanding users.
Maybe the quality of those phones is not as bad as some people describe, I personally had many returns, but I have to say that my last one seems to be flawless. I think that people should not bash this phone as much, some even predict that all of our phones will eventually have problems. I mean what can I say i don't think HTC messed up more then apple on the iphone 4 release. correct me if I am wrong.
Check out this post if you want to make absolutely sure your phone is good ( I have the light leakage, and i don't care I don't see how this is a problem).

Just to clear things out, while there are many possible things that are "technically wrong" with your phone i still think that if it doesn't bother you, who cares they exist. On another hand many people will say that if we let things go by htc will only go down hill.
Haven't had to. Only issue I have is light leakage which I am going to deal with myself.
No tilted screen, overheating, green pictures, or anything major that would warrant a return by me.

Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Once and only once because I just returned it and will return to the Evo3d once root and build quality is stepped up some. I like the phone but the build quality is subpar right now. I know the Evo had issues but the build quality on the Evo3d seems to be lower than what I experienced with the Evo.
I had the tilted screen, dot of white light near the search button, wifi 4g and radio issues and light bleed from the bottom to half way up the sides. That's enough to say that maybe I will have to wait till better builds start coming out. I'll stick with the Evo for now.
Didn't vote since it was a straight return.
No returns for me. Haven't had a single problem people post about except the green tint on pictures thing which I fixed myself by turning off the auto-lighting feature and setting it to what the lights are in the room. Haven't had a bad picture since. So that tells me a software update to that part of the camera code can fix that...but until then I just select.
No light leakage, tilted screen, signal issues, nothing... I'm very happy with it.
No returns for me....

2 visible white dot on the bottom of the lcd screen

-sigh- almost 4 weeks of ownership and already having an issue. I just noticed these 2 highly visible white dots (to the left) just above of the capacitive buttons on my lcd. Only visible on white background though but i call tmo and instructed me to get to a local store so they can have one of the reps to look at it before replacement (awesome). I'll take a pic of it later prior to visiting the store.
sorry for the image quality but here it is. I tried taking a few shots of and this happened to be the best shot. What do you guys think caused this?

Mine has the same issue! And this is one that I got via warranty exchange >_> There's no way in hell I'm paying another $10 for a warranty exchange, though.

yeah its those 2 highly visible glares or dot when you look really close to it.. i've taken it using my digital camera (which obviously takes crappy image btw) and although it may be hard to see by others on the monitor - it is really visible in person. I'm still a little confused as to how this developed.

it's been taken care of and the replacement device is on its way... thankfully it was still covered by warranty. Not sure why it wouldn't be since i just got the phone 4 weeks ago lol
which leads me to my next question.... In regards to warranty that is. Is it worth it to add a PHP (Premium Handset Protection) bundle? I mean, i remember when it used to be $5.99 (i believe) and i just noticed after ordering a replacement device - Tmo added that feature on my plan. Current cost is $7.99 which is still not bad but is it really worth it shelling out 8 bucks for something that can be prevented? I'm pretty anal when it comes to protecting my device (thanks to protective TPU case) and i hardly drop it by accident. However, "****" does happen to anyone when you least expect it. What do you guys think?
It can be worth it in case something happens like theft or out of warranty. But generally they offer you crap and try to say it's comparable.
Did they say you still have option for insurance? Generally unless you get it when the phone was new you can't add it on later

That's what i'm thinking but no, the rep never said anything or made any suggestions as far as adding it on my plan. I check my account frequently and that was the only time i discovered that it was added the day the replacement transaction was made. However, she did mention that even though my device was still covered by warranty, i was charged with $20 for device exchange since i didn't have the PHP feature added to my plan versus $5 bucks if i had it. -shrugs- eh its whatever. Atleast i know i'll have a brand spanking new device in a couple of days and HOPEFULLY.. yes.. hopefully... the annoying screen bleed on the bottom (normal build issue) with the device won't have it. lol
i just started a 2 year with tmobile and got the amaze for free. im wondering if this was a bad idea. i dont like the one phone because it lacks a dedicated camera button and some other stuff I dont like about it (its too thin actually). worst case I cancel for 200 and use this phone on straight talk until a better phone comes out I can start a new 2 year with.

that's a good point too... I too recently just switched from Individual plan to family plan (even though I'm the only one who's truly going to be using both devices) because i wanted this device (amaze) ever since its debut. Not a fan of One series either because of.. well.. a few things that i've come to expect on a high end device which lacks of... availability to expand storage, option to pull battery, dedicated cam shutter. To stay on point - isn't there a policy or something that after you cancelled your service there's a 1-3 month waiting period again before you can sign up???.. -shrugs-

Local purchase - camera issue - will Tmo/HTC honor warranty?

Bought an HTC One today. The camera appears to be defective. It has trouble focusing and is always blurry on the top right-hand side quadrant of the photo.
Since I'm pre-paid and bought from an individual, should I go to T-Mobile for a warranty replacement or direct to HTC? Obviously it's under warranty since it hasn't been out for over a year.
I know AT&T were jerks about warranty claims if you didn't purchase direct from them but don't know about T-Mobile.
Thanks.

as long as there is no damage you should have 14 days for an exchange
I believe you will have to go to HTC. T-Mobile will only honor it within the 14 day window for the original owner

The phone is definitely outside the 14 day window and I'm not the original owner. Guess I'll go to HTC and play that game.
The physical hardware is clearly under warranty, so hopefully they don't give me the runaround.
Before returning try changing the video resolution from super hd to hd and see if that fixes it. Then you should be able to switch it back and it should work fine. It doesn't just fix the video camera but the still camera as well.

Now you tell me. I boxed it up and shipped back today.
Here is what the average photo looked like. Just terrible. Tried a hard reset, reset the camera settings, etc. Nothing worked. I think it's just plain defective.
Night photos are grain city too. Nothing good about it at all. FYI, I had and sold an HTC One (regretted it, bought another) and the photos were fantastic. This one is just a dud (hence why the seller only asked $450 cash - now I see why).
HTC support asked me if I wiped the lens with a lint free cloth. WTF do you think, lol?
Tap to focus just didn't work. In fact, nothing worked. Every photo is terrible. I really hope HTC support doesn't give me the run around.
(my backyard - yes we have two dogs and yes their pee kills the grass, but they are worth it)
Yeah that's about what mine looked like before. I had just written HTC to find out what I needed to do the replace it. This was literally just last night. I was up late about to flash the 1.29 Rom to see if that fixed it. I looked through the settings to see if there was a way to change the auto focus settings which there only is for video. I changed the resolution setting just to see if it might help and it completely fixed it. Not sure why but it seems like it was "stuck". It may or may not have been the same as your issue but sounds like it was. Whatever though, you get a new one so it all works out.

Anyone know how fast HTC repairs/replaces and ships back? They will receive the phone today and I'm hopeful to receive it back by this weekend. Realistic?
Well, just got the phone back. Slow ground shipping!
Aaaand HTC did absolutely nothing to the phone. The pictures are all still blurry. Infuriated right now. Two weeks and they did absolutely nothing, just shipped it right back to me with no notes, no repair, nothing.
Called up HTC. Of course they have "no notes" as to what was done to the phone. Here's a tip: nothing was done.
The "escalations team" was closed so they told me to call back tomorrow.
Just so I'm not crazy, is this considered a normal "ultrapixel" photo from this phone? I just took it. Basically, the tap to focus does absolutely nothing. I'm about to unload this junk to someone else and make it their problem. I can't go a full month without a working phone as my only option is to send it in again and have the HTC techs go "yep, looks good from here" and send it right back to me again. Just replace your defective hardware guys. Not hard.
It would'nt hurt to try
The worst they would say is no. Ive heard story's of people getting replacements from t mobile in your situation, if it was a manufacturers defect. I would just go into a store and be totally polite friendly with the rep and show that your completely bummed out about your new phone not working the way it should. From my experience, kindness can go a long ways with t mobile.

Not to press the depressing issue any more..but is that pic actually a focused zoomed in shot ..meaning your actually farther away then where the picture makes it look.
Was thinking that maybe your just to zoomed in with the shot... No photo ever looks any good fully zoomed ..I usually walk up closer less zoom =clearer picture.
But its just a idea I know your mad as hell .. And I agree the photo is horrific .

That didn't fix anything for me. I finally e-mailed HTC and this was their response which also did not fix anything.
Safe Mode
1. Please turn off the phone.
2. Then briefly press the Power button to turn on the phone.
3. While the phone powers on, press and hold the Volume down button until phone loads the OS and "Safe Mode" should appear on the lower left part of the screen.
After you put it in safe mode, try using your phone, if it works perfectly, then the problem may be caused by an application your phone. Which you will need to remove the applications one by one to see which one is causing the issue. If the issue persists, please reply to this email so we can further troubleshoot and have this issue solved.
All I know is I'm about ready to sell/return this HTC One and go get the Galaxy S4. My S3 treated me fine and the camera was far superior.
Was told it's a software issue and the update isn't expected for at least a month. So until then I have a $600 phone with a useless camera. Returning this and going to the S4. Not sure why I doubted it when I loved my S3. Figured I would give HTC a try again from my Sensation 4G days but what a waste of time. I can say the build quality of the phone along with the screen were definitely the things that attracted me.
What about an exchange, since you just got it? Did you get it in store? If so .. you could test out the one they exchange it for while at the store. Mine works awesome, and many others are very happy with theirs. So it sounds like you got a lemon camera. And we all know there are some bad ones in all the phone models.

True. I actually returned it and went with the S4. I'll give HTC another shot once their next big phone comes out. I did find myself missing a bigger screen also. It may be lacking a few PPI compared to the One but it's just as nice. Thanks for the kind words guys.

I see that you already returned the One. But I do not see how it could have been a software issue. If you were stock, you should have had build 1.27.531!8. I have that build and my focus works fine. Sounds like you should have exchanged it because it was clearly defective. Too late now, though.

In my phone this strongly correlates with heat. Once the phone gets hot from being at high brightness or doing something graphically intensive it will not focus. Sometimes you can get it to work by giving it a sharp slap or pressing gently on the glass in front of the camera. If you let it cool down for a few minutes then it works. But it is definitely a physical problem.
I'm having the same issues. My first HTC One was fine but had a power issue so it was replaced with this one that will now not focus. I contacted HTC and T-Mobile and was told that there would be a software update in the future to fix the issue but there are no specified dates. I asked T-Mobile if they could exchange it since it's only 2 months old and was told I would have to wait on an upgrade or purchase at full price. I'm really not pleased about any of this.

What's wrong with my camera?

My camera app, and just the way my phone's camera works in general has made me extremely upset. I don't know if it is because of me constantly flashing new Roms (who knows? I might have broken something while doing so). My camera never auto focuses. When I say never, I mean NEVER. To think about it, it doesn't focus at all. I have to relaunch the camera app in order to get things to refocus. I've never really bothered to ask, but I began messing around with my brother's phone, and his camera works perfectly.

its funny that all these problems im having are randomly popping up for other people.
mine doesnt either. im two seconds away from hulk smashing it and getting a replacement from best buy.
i pulled my phone out of my pocket yesterday and it wouldnt turn on, apparently others are having this issue also. i eventually got it to boot into the bootloader and i then proceeded to accidently factory reset because the option is next to recovery.
in fact, i think i might tonight. (return it, not commit insurance fraud. thats bad, mmkay.)
maybe ill get lucky again and theyll have it on backorder and theyll let me upgrade. (thats how i got my lte, the 3ds were on backorder.)
