[Q] Galaxy SIII says it is roaming, but it is not - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I just got a Galaxy SIII, and I paid to unlock it with one of the codes over the internet.
It unlocked fine, and when I type: *#7465625# everything is listed as unlocked.
Only thing that might influence it is it is a Vodafone Ireland phone, but I have a 3 Ireland SIM in the phone.
Would flashing a different firmware help here?
Sorry about the question, coming over from HTC so just getting used to it.

APN
The APN details are correct, and there are no other APNs set up on the phone.
Thanks for the reply.

I had this om my SGS2 and it drove me potty. I thought my phone was borked, but it was normal behaviour from my old carrier, Tele2. They're Swedish based with a Norwegian "branch" but since I was in Norway I was always "roaming".
Don't use them any more. Any chance 3 Ireland does something similar, or linked to 3 UK?

I had an issue like this on my HTC dream because i was on everything everywhere (orange and T-Mobile) and when it changed from one to the other it said roaming but I never got charged for it.

I've noticed that for some carriers the galaxy does not show any APNs, like when I insert Orange sim the mobile data works fine without APN in the list but when i insert a sim from diffrent carrier it says that the phone is roaming, when I updated the APN for the new carrier and set it to default the roaming triangle was gone...
the bottom line is if you set an APN it doesn't mean that the phone is using it
check if there is a green dot beside it.

T-mobile / Orange Roaming

Hi all,
I'm on t-mobile in the uk and on my previous phone (htc hero) I was able to flick automatically to Orange's signal when I had poor t-mobile signal. When this would happen the phone would let me know I was roaming.
However, on my new Galaxy S2 it never seems to change to Orange's signal and my phone is never roaming. This has resulted in me having worse reception on my new phone over my old hero.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so is their something I can do to fix it?
I'm using the standard unrooted rom.

Mine would never do this either.
Go to the mobile network settings and MANUALLY connect to Orange.
Then wait for it to connect and then go back in and choose Automatic.
This fixed it for me my phone now roams.
Did you take out a new contract for your phone? Maybe you need to activate the network sharing again from the tmobile website.

Thanks, just tried this but still no joy. Interestingly when I manually connect to "T-Mobile Orange" instead of just "T-Mobile" and then check the roaming status, it still says "Not roaming" - shouldn't it say "Roaming" when I'm on Orange?

Thanks, I called T-Mobile a couple of weeks ago to check to see if anything needed setup on my account and she said that it was all good to go. I think T-Mobile have removed the ability to opt-in to network sharing as I can't find it anywhere, I think it's automatically enabled for all new accounts.
It's driving me mad as I feel like I'm missing out on something and I can't see any way to fix it :-(
ok i just manually switched to orange and it says i'm not roaming. That's what i'd expect to see as both networks are considered 'home' networks. Maybe you just haven't been in an area with no tmobile coverage??
I had to send a text to T-Mobile (1221 I think) to use the Orange network when I had the HTC HD2. It switched seamlessly when I went out of a T-Mobile signal area.
When I upgraded my phone to the SGSII, there was still no problem switching networks. Admittedly I used the same SIM card, so that might be the switch-over went so smooth.

Yeah i remember having to send a text to opt in to the network sharing, though as the OP has pointed out i believe it's automatic now for new contracts.
Thanks all. I've realised that it's simply that my old Hero used to show a roaming icon but the gs2 doesn't. It still flicks automatically from tmobile to orange.
I wish I spotted that before using up your valuable time!

NO Signal Icon

Long story short: i got this phone as replacement thought an cellphone unlock company that flash my original T-Mobile Vibrant SGH-T959 too many time and the phone crashed. Then after almost a year of going back in forward with them they apparently got a replacement phone from Samsung and I got this Galaxy II GT-I9100 and now I am back to square1.
The phone turn on fine and everything seems to be working OK till I insert my T-mobile SIM card and reboot the phone and all I get is the “No signal” icon on the upper right, I try my wife ATT SIM Card and the same, I check the network mode and set to auto, check Access Point Names and t shows epc.tmobile.com (green), If I go to the about phone status it shows “Unknown” under network, the phone never prompt to insert unlock network code or anything it just boots all the way, any feed back to get this phone to work will be very appreciated:

The GT-I9100 wasn't designed for T-mobile USA, and even if you DID manage to get signal with it, you'll only receive Edge data speeds, as it lacks the capability to receive one of the necessary bands to get high speed data on T-mobile USA's network.
It does fully work and get high speed mobile data on ATT's network, however. (I'm in the states, using this phone on ATT)
Unfortunalety this particular phone does not work wiht ATT either.
I think i may have to just sell it on Ebay for part since i can even tell with what network this phone will work.

Sounds like it could be SIM locked to a particular carrier, or maybe there is a hardware issue with the antenna.
If the phone is sim card locked would the phone pormpt me to enter the code?
this phone does not prompt for anything whather is the ATT or the T-mobile sim card.
see video.

SIM locked to a network. Meaning only a SIM from a particular network will work. Not a SIM PIN.
EDIT to add: also check your IMEI. Is it 004999010640000 or something else? (DON'T post what it actually is if it is something else...)
ctomgee:
What baseband version does your I9100 has?
I have I9100UHLPE
My IMEI starts with 3583xxxx
there is also a IMEISV = 01
fenjen or enyone: were can i d/l ODIN?
OK i found by the firmware version on my GT-9100 that is for Trindad and tobago,
So my questions is wich frimware will work in the USA wiht ATT or T-mobile, Anyone using this phone ins the uS wiht no issues please tel me what firmware version your phone has.
My I9100 has: fIRMmware: PDA:LPE/PHONE:LPE/CSC:LPE (TTT)

I have baseband xxki4.
I should note to you (again) that regardless of what baseband you flash to the phone, and if you do end up getting signal, you won't get better than Edge speeds on T-mobile USA's network.
As for what firmware works on which network: it doesn't matter. All of them will work, but some basebands/modems will work BETTER than others, but they should all get at least SOME signal.
Also, there's one more possibility. The phone's IMEI may actually be blacklisted. Check with your carrier on that.

[Q] Setting up APN

I am traveling soon and thought I would set up an APN for the FONIC sim card I have. (German GSM SIM) I wen to settings->more settings->mobile networks-> access point names. THen I pressed menu button and expected to see a "new apn" menu item ... but there is only a "reset to default". I talked to the verizon people and they indicated I have to be out of the country to set it up. Does not sound right. I have a feeling they disabled it. Anyone know how to put in an APN on this phone ?
On the positive side the sim slot is unlocked.
It might be the same situation as with the droid4. With the Droid4 Verizon disabled the phone to work with US GSM so it cannot be used on T-Mobile or AT&T in the US, but it works fine abroad.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
I'm not sure. It's possible. But the "new apn" menu item is missing. I'm afraid the verzion people cut it out.
According to Verizon, Samsung has designed it that way...
I have just spoken with Verizon global tech support. The rep said that Verizon orders 4G devices factory unlocked. They no longer prevent the vendor (Samsung, HTC, etc...) from allowing the phone to work on another carrier in the US. However, it is apparently Samsung's policy now that their CDMA capable devices (Verizon, Spring, etc...) are always shipped locked to the carrier of origin and that there is no official means of breaking this lock.
This is interesting because it seems to apply only to mobile data. The Note 2 will function as a dumb phone just fine on a non-verizon network. However, there is no supported means of selecting a new APN on it, other than perhaps rooting it and changing that part of the ROM. So, assuming the verizon rep was correctly informed, shame on Samsung.

ARRRGGGG! This sure seems to be the case.
Same problem. Wanted to use Straight Talk SIM BUT cannot change APN. I have a HTC DNA with no issues changing APN. Looking for a non root work around else Note 2 will go back to Verizon

I have to be missing something. This is the premier verizon global phone. How can they not let you set an APN?!!??? It's not global at that point.
When I talked to verizon they indicated you could select it when in europe. Could it be possible that apn selection shows up when you are over there and you put in FONIC (german) sim?
How would the phone know when you're in Europe to let you change/add an APN? Would you be able to just turn on airplane mode so the phone doesn't know where you are at and then try?
Well I've talked to Verzon and Samsung numerous times. I have found that each blames each other for no ability to set APN. They leave the sim slot unlocked but this is how they make sure you don't use the phone on any one else network. I asked her how it can be international if I can't set up a APN. She indicated in the small print it says not all featues will work, that is ....no data when roaming. But you can use it as a dumb phone. She said you have to use wifi. So rooting and addinf an apn will fix it.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note SGH-i717 doesn't see Globul mobile network in Bulgaria

Hello all. I was hoping somebody could help me with this one.
I bought my AT&T Galaxy Note (SGH-i717) already unlocked from Amazon a while back. I know it's not SIM-locked exclusively to AT&T cards as I used it in the US for a while on SimpleMobile's network.
I am currently in Bulgaria, and today I bought a prepaid SIM from Globul. According to what I found online, Globul uses the GSM 900/1800mhz bands. I thought this was a quad band phone, what's going on? I went into the Network Operators settings, and tried registering with the network both Automatically and Manually. When registering automatically, I get a display that says "Automatic registration..." that doesn't go away. When trying to do it manually, I briefly get a message saying "Searching..." and then it jumps back to the Available networks screen where the only option is "default setup."
I should mention that I flashed a VLK1 T-mobile radio a while back. I'm thinking it's possible that this caused the issue I'm experiencing. If someone could drop me a link to the i717 radios thread, or provide any help to resolve this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
[Update] - I reflashed my ROM [Blackstar VII] and the mobile network showed up just fine. However, I am still having issues getting data to work. Any suggestions?
Check for other APN settings. I know with straight talk there are a few different ones all depending on when you opened your account. I'm unfamiliar with Globul but I'll post back if I find anything.

Custom Rom (on i9300) not working on Virgin Mobile UK

So the other week i put Lineage 14.1 7.1.1/7.1.0 rom on my samsung galaxy s3. I just switched to virgin mobile uk i was previously with giffgaff and giffgaff worked completely fine on this phone and rom. Yes my phone is unlocked. It was originally on a EE contract then i unlocked it and used it with giffgaff (02). The problem i'm having is when i put the Virgin Mobile UK sim into the phone and boot it up it says "Emergency Calls Only". When i go into the network settings and mobile networks and search for mobile networks it shows T-Mobile UK (EE which is who virgin mobile use), Vodafone, O2 and Three. (These 3 here have a padlock icon at the end while T-Mobile does not. Im guessing this is good. When i tap on it it refuses to connect and just tells me to try again later. It might be worth noting that when i start up the phone it briefly says "Emergency Calls Only - Virgin" at the top of the handset which i assume its connected for a second and then disconnects, loses connection or gets kicked off? I was on the phone to Virgin for 20 minutes and after i told the guy i was using a custom rom he did say it might be possible that Virgin does not allow anyone with a custom rom on the network.
Is this possible?
Has anyone else ever used a custom rom on Virgin Mobile UK, could you connect or did you have problems?
Thanks, Luke.
Have you set the apn settings?.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Apn settings affect data and should not affect voice service.
Only way to test the Virgin rep's assertion would need to flash back to stock and try the sim.

Quite sure my s3 on a custom kernel was once using vermin so i doubt they'll block custom roms from the network..
Without apn settings you might get as far as edge but certainly wont get 2g or higher.

I think flashing a stock ROM and then trying to connect is the only way to eliminate another possible factor.
Ok, i'll try stock rom then i guess. What do you mean "Without apn settings you might get as far as edge but certainly wont get 2g or higher." I don't get any signal at all so that can't be the problem.
Does or can anyone help me find a faster download link or mirror for a UK version of the stock rom. Samsung-Updates download link from rapidgator is so slow. 7 hours *tears*
The only other place is sammobile.com but that may only be a bit faster.

Tried stock rom, still no luck. Any other ideas? The Virgin guy said it could be a very very small chance that its the sim. But the fact it quickly displays virgin at boot up makes me think the sim is fine.
Maybe try the Virgin sim in another phone? Phone shows the correct imei? Not blacklisted?
Yeh I need to try this, literally no one in my family is on EE or anything using EE. What if the SIM does work in another phone what could be the problem with mine? Phone does show correct imei and it can't be blacklisted since it works with my giffgaff SIM.
Have you recently "moved house" from giffgaff to virgin and ported your number?. Your sim might not be activated. Im swinging with that from this point forward.
Text READY to 789678 from your old phone & SIM and your new sim if that doesn't work.
Moved house? Do you mean like switch from! Giffgaff to virgin? If so yes I just have switched. I was planning to keep my number but since I haven't got network I can't and haven't told them the PAC code.
How can I text a number of I don't have single or does that still work? ?
It is possible it's not active but the guy on the phone told me it was, he even got me to tell him the end 3 digits off the SIM to check.
The reason it's possible is because I ordered the SIM from them and the first one that was supposed to be delivered by YODEL was never delivered I called them that evening and they said we will just sent out another SIM anyway and so they did. This second SIM they sent out is the one I'm using and it might be the first SIM that is only active. But the fact the Virgin rep asked for the numbers of the sim and then told me it's active...I really don't know
Regardless, you must activate the sim, try the text i stated, if no joy try to call vm from the new sim and tell them the pac code then they swap the numbers over. If it doesn't ring out then I'd take it to carphone warehouse and ask them to set up the new sim card.
The sim is active as in it is alive and sending a response but it looks like the actual line attached to it isn't active. Sim cards must be activated to prevent the number attached to it from going stale as there is a forever decreasing amount of 07 numbers available for networks.
I'm convinced that the sim isn't activated, it will currently be a payg sim and might need to be topped up to activate it, then you transfer any number and remaining credit to your new contract/payg sim (if required).
You should still be able to call the carrier on an inactive line so long as the sim is alive. Failing that use a landline.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Well i've called virgin again and they say it is active. It has been over 24 hours. I've tried it in 2 other phones and it just doesn't connect. They even sent out a 3rd sim now and same problem. Definitely a problem there end then, i'm thinking?

Did you try the text to activate the sim?. As I said, the sim can be active as in valid to the system but not necessarily activated to prevent the number going stale and being returned to the pool after 6 months on no use.. Even if there is no signal at all you should have at least tried it once.
Maybe the sim is payg and needs a topup to activate. That could be another restriction.
I don't have any simcard documentation so I'm shooting at fish in a barrel but surely 3 sim cards on the trot can't be faulty. Something is amiss..
