The Revolution (AKA: the end to unlimited data) - Motorola Droid X2

Well the end is here. Or the revolution as verizon calls it.
@VerizonWireless: The plan that revolves around you. The Share Everything Plan. Begins 6.28.12. http://social.vzw.com/kmK http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6H5CnqYBW7g #shareeverything
http://news.verizonwireless.com/news/2012/06/pr2012-06-11e.html
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/06/12/the-basics-verizons-new-share-everything-plans/

They will have to pry unlimited data from my cold dead hands...buying phones out right from here on out. F*ck verizon.

It says:
"Customers are free to keep their existing plans, but there is no fee or contract extension to move to the new Share Everything Plans."
I bet there's some fine print somewhere that give stipulations on this.....

Revolution, huh? Seems more like The Revelations to me...

Want to get an SG2 but...

Ok, so I want the SG2, but keeping my current contract with AT&T proves to be difficult. If I upgrade with AT&T the SG2 is $199. If I upgrade through walmart letstalk.com $159, amazon wireless $149, deals2buy.com the SG2 is$99.
Talk about some great deal right? Only problem I have is that my contract would change. As many of you may or may not know, AT&T in their infinite wisdom removed their text tiering plan. It used to be something like $5 for 200 text a month, $15 for 1000 and $20 for unlimited. Because I don't text much, I went with the $5 for 200 text. I also opted into the $30 for unlimited data. I have been grandfathered into these options, but if I get the phone from an outside agency I would have to switch to AT&T's "awesome" $25 for 2gb data plan and be left almost without a text option unless I pay $20 for unlimited which is the only plan they have now. When I say I don't text much, I mean I'm barely breaking 80 a month and that's me really trying.
Now I don't use that much data mostly because of my current location. According to my data usage chart, I'm only using about 500mb a month. While the $25 for 2gb might seem like a good idea, I'd like to know that when I relocate within the next 6 months, that I won't have to worry about going over in data usage. When I'm in an area that has a good 3G connection, I watch a lot of videos when I have downtime and you can shoot past 2gb in no time.
I'm sure a lot of you are saying drop AT&T and what not, but the truth be told, I've never had any problems with them over the last 4 years. I think their rates are reasonable and I love the roll over option. So me leaving them is not an option anytime soon at least not until they royale screw me.
Are you 100% sure reseller's require you to change you data plan if you upgrade through them? If its true, then I would spend the extra money and go to an official AT&T store and buy one. I wouldn't sacrifice my unlimited data for anything.
I agree, do anything you can to keep that Unlimited Data plan.
Man the money you save up front would probably be negated over the course of the contract. If you dont have the money now just wait a spell, the price will come down of course after a while.
You should really look into your calling habits though. If you not using over 2gigs ever then you could save money there. Also with unlimited texts comes the free cell to cell deal. Thats any carriers cell not just att, which makes a huge difference. Everyone's situation is a bit different. att is actually pretty good about working with you on stuff like this. I have had them eat HUGE bills. I hate att for my own reasons, but this is one area where I have to concede their worth. Good luck to you. The phone really is bad ass, best phone I have had to date and I have had my fair share.
You are not forced to change data plan I upgraded to infuse 4g and kept data. I probably gnna get gs2 in a week or so. I do have the unlimited data btw.

You do not lose your grandfathered unl. Data plan. I upgraded at Walmart and dud not. They may tell you that you are but if you call att and raise enough hell you'll keep it. Trust me.

Yes they do. Once you add the phone to your cart, you have to pick a calling and data plan. While AT&Ts calling plans haven't changed, their data and texting plans have and the resellers websites options have changed to reflect that.

I don't talk on my cell that often that why I like the rollover minutes thing. As for going over 2gb, it can happen because I travel a lot and when I'm not at my remote location, I go over 2gb easily. I don't think saving $5 is feasible just because I'm not consistently going over 2gb every month. Right now I pay $30 for unlimited. If I do go with the 2gb plan, I'll be charged $10 for each gig I go over. With unlimited, I'm covered no matter what the hell happens.

This is true if you do the upgrade through AT&T and not a reseller. AT&T isn't willing to cut me a deal on the phone simply because they don't have to. While I do understand this and I have the money to get the new phone at the price they are offering, it's always good to save a few bucks everynow and again.

While that might be true, I'm not willing to take that chance. Like I said earlier, you are forced to make a choice for a data plan. If making that choice prevents me from switching back to having unlimited, that would be bad. Saving the money on the phone wont' be worth it in the end.
I just did this on Monday. I was on the old $30 unlimited data and the $5 for 200 text plan.
I got mine at Walmart. The rep had to call AT&T to get it activated. They are able to keep the $30 unlimited data but will require you to upgrade your text plan to get it activated.
However, if you immediately call AT&T (611) and talk to a rep, you CAN get your old $5 for 200 text plan back. It will require the rep to ask their supervisor, but they will do it for you.
Went from old AT&T plan from my iPhone 3GS and still have the unlimited and 200 text messages.
Well it sounds like you've got it all figured out then.with all due respect, I don't understand why you even created this thread when you just countered helpful comments and seemed to have answered your own questions.

I just did if you read my post above...
I went to AT&T store and and them if they can give me $50 credit for getting the phone and i must keep my current features unchanged. The sales rep agreed and i walked out the store within 20 min with a phone. i paid $200 plus tax but he credited my account $50 right there.
When I bought my Infuse and kept my $5/200 texting plan and unlimited data - the GSII was bought outright off-contractr so didn't affect my account at all.
AT&T corporate stores are the way to go! They might not have the extreme hardware deals, but their representatives are FAR more competent and honest in my opinion.
I just did ths last night
I just upgraded to the S2 last night at an Att corporate store. The person who was ringinh me up told me the THE SAME THING. I need to change my data plan $30 unlimited and my $5 text plan. I have the same exact services as you do. She kept trying to put it through the system and it kept giving her errors saying that she could give me the data plan but not the text plan. In the end she was able to get it done and I kept everything that i had.
All i can tell you is to tell the rep to try every configuration to see if it goes through. If i remember right she ended up finding the text plan that would work but it was near to the bottom of her list.
It is 100% possible to keep because I was in the same exact situation.
I as well. : /

Complete bull****.
I upgraded @ Best Buy, unlimited data remains.
I don't really text at all so I have no texting plan. I refuse to pay extra for something that costs the network infinitely less the a phone call would have.
You will find that many, if not all representatives will feed you that "Need to Upgrade your plan" line of bull.
It is their JOB! The more people they can trick and fool OFF of their unlimited plans, the more money they can make.
DO NOT EVER BELIEVE THEM!!!
My Best Buy store had some cash register issues when I picked up my SGSII. We had to complete the upgrade over the phone, in store. Can't count the number of times the AT&T guys said I had NO existing Data-Plan. I called Foul, as I've been on the Corporate data plan (for office email) from the beginning.
Now if you try to go the order online / nonhuman route, all bets are off.
I upgraded at Walmart IN STORE and had NO ISSUES keeping my unlimited grandfathered in everything plan. I too have the $30 data and $5 unlimited text plan. I did the SAME THING last year with my captivate but I HAD TO do it in store. Walmarts online LETSTALK would not allow me to keep my current grandfathered in plan and they cancelled my order. So I walked into the Walmart store and got it and kept my grandfathered plan. Just before upgrading to the att SGS2 I called and CONFIRMED that I can and will keep my unlimited plan a.d was assured by the retention department that I would. I called after I left the store with SGS2 in hand and again called att to CONFIRM that my plan is still listed as the Personal unlimited plan (grandfathered plan). The att retention department told me that IF the store gave me ANY ISSUES to just get the phone and call them once it was mine. So stick to your guns in it and don't just give it away.

I see my best bet would be to walk into Walmart and get that deal on the phone since I can't be sure things will work out with the other online resellers. It seems that buy making your voices heard it was possible to keep your plans. I think what I'm going to do first is call AT&T up and ask the question "If I upgrade my phone through a reseller, will you allow me to keep my current plan" and see what there response is. After that I'll argue with them about how I've been a customer for some years and because I'm renewing my contract, that's the least they could do for me. I'll be sure to get the sales reps name and ID number if they have one. Hell, I might even use my phone and let them know that I'm recording this call for quality assurance. That way I'll have some hard evidence that I was promised that I could keep my plan by the sales rep. I haven't had a reason to use my in call voice recorder but this seems like the perfect time.
Thanks for your input all, I'll let you know how things go and what deal I ended up getting.

Verizon Wireless at their BS tricks again

When I bought my Rezound online almost a month ago, VZW decided to pull more of their tricks. I was on VZW's website and my old Touch Pro 2's contract had been expired. I wanted an upgrade. VZW obviously wasn't promoting this one which cost me a whopping $250. That's not my gripe tho. My gripe is , when I proceeded to go forth with the sale, a window pops up saying my current messaging plan is not valid with this device. It then forced me to have to buy a 1000 msg/mo. plan or pay per msg. How was my messaging plan NOT valid with this phone?? I have had that messaging plan since 2005 and have used it with a Motorola Q9M and an Htc Touch Pro 2. The TP2 I bought online same as this one. The messaging plan in question.... I had unlimited IN Network messaging and paid $5 a month for 50 msg per month. That was for those people I msgd to not on VZW, and I DONT text a lot. Yet I was forced to pay twice as much for that plan in order to proceed...
Then..... After that it jacks my $15 a mo. tethering option ... ,forcefully removes it because it says it's "Not valid" wtf? I try to get it back because I need that as its my only means to go on the internet with my computer (for the last 4 years)..but when I try, they now say I must use the Mobile Hotspot feature. Which apparently is a tiered data plan. I used about 1 - 3gb of data normally every month on the computer. But yayy now since VZ jacked my plan I now have to pay twice as much for the same amount of data usage. I havent activated it. I cant afford the extra charges. I've already been paying $45 a mo. for that unlimited data plan I activated in 2007. $75 a month for internet thats really only 5gb.. I dont think so.. Im sure some of you would flame me for this, but Im just getting fed up with Verizons bullsh**. I neede to blow some steam about this for awhile..
Yeah I'm getting tired of Verizon's crap too, but for different reasons. the Rezound being locked down is the biggest right now. Also when I go into their stores the employees know absolutely nothing about the products they are selling, and I wish I was exaggerating about that, but it's true. Even their "tech" people have no clue. It seems like if I'm paying $180/month on my bill and $300 for my phones and been with them for over four years now, they could be a little more helpful and accommodating to us.... Take the shackles off my phone!!!!!!
The data plan is not valid because with a 4G phone you need a 4G data plan for the hotspot feature. They should have grandfathered you in on the price though. You may need to call and speak with someone.
About the texting, I don't know the exact reason why you couldn't keep it, but did your minutes/etc change by chance? And since you were out of contract and did not renew prior this may be why you were not grandfathered.

I had the same issue using their online upgrade method. It wouldn't allow me to keep my 250 txt plan and tried to force me to get the 1000 plan for an extra $5 a month. I ended up going directly to the store to upgrade. They didn't say a word and carried the 250 plan right over.

That's not it. I was not out of contract, but was required to choose a per sms fee or the 1000/mo. when I upgraded to a Rezound, in contract.
For me, $10 a month is not a big deal and I'd probably pay more over time with the per message deal. My younger daughter with her AT&T iPhone, only communicates with me via text ;-)
So I do not think this is a result of contract expiration. Probably VZW is just making things worse for unlimited plans until we "have to" choose another plan.

You just said you were not under contract. When you are not under contract they don't have to let you keep your current plan options. They can change them on you on a wimb.

Did you do the research first on prices? I can see your point on why you wanted to vent about it but if you had taken the time out to research first by speaking to a VZ rep over the phone they would've helped you and if you were grandfathered in whichever plan(data, talk, text etc...) then you would still be on it. You don't have to convert to whatever new plan they are offering. When I had tried to upgrade my DroidX to a Thunderbolt over the website the same pop up box came up saying that my current plan was not available for the TB. For for the hell of it I exited out and started from the beginning upgrading the DroidX to a Dinc2 and the same pop up box did not pop up so I figured it was because of a 4g phone. I called and asked about that pop up box and CS walked me through saying that its just an automatic pop up box that will come up and if you continue to the next window it would allow you to select the same plan as before.
I just got home with my brand spankin' new Rezound...loving it, as a matter of fact.
I went to the store because every time I went online, it wanted to change me to the tiered data plan.
I am still grandfathered in on the same unlimited data plan I bought in 2007. Its some combined data / phone plan. Something like ''Americas Choice 450 + Email/unlimited data" and cost me $79.99 a month. Then I tacked on the msg plan for $5 and then the tethering for $15 . But for this phone, I did keep my original plan. Just that it would not let me keep a lot of the other stuff. When I first got that popup window, I backed out. I DID do 611 and talk to someone about that. I spoke to 2 different reps. One of them seemed dumbfounded and couldn't understand why it was doing that. He said it "Shouldn't" ....hmmm . I asked him to talk to another rep. Another guy came on the line and then said that msg plan was well out of date and hasnt been available for over 4 years. I called BS on that because I had that plan TWICE since. He said it's "locked" in the system and theres nothing he can do about it. So if its "locked in" ..... How is it I keep it for the last 4 years? He didnt know...... FOUL! oh well. Im not going to keep making a fuss over some msging plan.
As for 4G... It doesnt even stay on and I get 3G 99% of the timr. Even in super strong signal areas. My 3G here is really good. But 4G seems useless ....and im supposedly paying for that...hmmm

There are people here who have been member far longer than you or I and don't have the issues you have in regards to your plans. You must have gotten some very limited promotion.
As for 4G. You are not paying for 4G, you are paying for Verizon Service, and whatever phone you have the connects to their service. Verizon isn't going to pop up a tower everywhere as you drive down the road for your convenience. People buy 4G phones all the time that don't even have 4G in their area. The network is barely a year old, you need to chill out and let them roll it out and fix the bugs. Or, you can changer service providers and complain that they don't have **** for 4G anywhere in the country and get a "4G" phone just because it sounds cool.

I just checked in to the verizonwireless.com website...I've still got the 450 minute America's Choice plan I've had for well on ten years...I've still got $5 for 250 texts, and still have unlimited data.
I may have saved $30 or so on Wirefly or similar, but I've got the peace of mind that I didn't have to go to war to protect that unlimited data plan.
Im not complaining about the availability of 4g service. I know not everyone has 4g in their area and its spotty at best. What Im saying is that I run a signal check for LTE and the signal can be strong but most of the time it does not turn on. Im NOT expecting it to follow me wherever I go. But Id expect it to work where there is strong LTE signal. See what I'm saying now? As for paying for 4g service... Whats that Wifi Hotspot thing then and why wont plain ol tethering plan work? Because tethering is for 3G phones , not 4g. And Hotspot cost twice as much as tether for the same data amount. Even though I am technically NOT using Hotspot because I refuse to payvtwice as much for the same thing, I had lost the tethering option and onlyvhave the more expensive option now due to 4g....But the 4g dont seem to be working.
And again, I have not lost my original service plan. Just those reps were dummies.. and I dont feel like making a huge hassle. I just wrote this post to gripe about Verizons BS. I had to vent.. that is all.

Have you tried talking to retentions? At worst, I would ask for the unlimited data and a credit every month to cover the messaging. Seems only right for a long time customer.
Verizon has always nickeled and dimed its customers with extra charges for this or that, they've always been one of the two most expensive of the major four providers (AT&T being the other), and they've always tried to control what the customer could and couldn't do (i.e. no way to get rid of the bloatware, locked bootloaders, etc.). The company has invested a lot of money in its network, and it steadfastly refuses to outsource its customer service. It has to recover the money somewhere. Retentions?hmm I guess I haven't. Already have the unlimited. Is this on the 611 as well? I don't like going up to the main..err what used to be the HQ store in Ft Myers. Ever since they changed the stores all around, the guys working up there seem like tightwads now. Idk what they did to their stores, but I totally want to avoid that place since the change. Not helpful at all. Totally miss how the stores used to be. Must be some corporate bs going on.

At what point in the process do you say STOP..WOW...

AT&T One Upgrade - Data 'Unlimited' vs. 3GB

Just about to pre-order a One, and I'm stuck on trying to understand what 'data unlimited' means as compared to the 3GB plan. I did get grandfathered to an unlimited plan when I transitioned to my Inspire, but in the past 2 years there hasn't been a single month where I exceeded 2GB. Wondering if y'all have any advice.
Keep your grandfathered unlimited data, NO reason not to.
I'm on Premier, but when I tried to order mine, the website wouldn't give me the correct price for the phone if I kept my current voice and data plan.
I went into a store, and during the process they told me the system said unlimited plans were not allowed with this device. They called to make sure I am able to keep the unlimited data. Whoever they called annotated my account saying I could keep it, but it has to be reapplied after I get the phone (as was the case the last couple of times I upgraded).

Unlimited gets throttled at 3gb... If u avg 2.5 check out the mobile share plans no throttling and they go upto 50gb... if u wanna keep unlimited don't order online cuz they'll swap ur data pkg

Not sure exactly what you're saying here.
If I don't get throttled until after 3G, then what's to worry about? How much 'throttling' is there? How does one tell if the plan has been changed?

If I recall, LTE unlimited data plan cap is 5GB.
yep. If your on att, always keep your unlimited. Only way to lose it is if they accidentally upgrade your data plan to 3gb or whatever data, or move you to the mobile share plan.

You should be able to keep your data plan regardless of how you order, but as someone else mentioned, the "unlimited" data plan is only unlimited until you are throttled at the 3 gig mark (I do believe its 5 gig for LTE users), at which point you drop to 2G speeds (and let me tell you, 2G is not fun) for the remainder of your billing period. If the Premiere site isn't letting you keep the plan, then you should be able to call and place the same order over the phone with a rep, and the rep should be able to retain your data plan. Otherwise, if you remove the data plan, even accidentally, you cannot get it back, so be very careful about what you click.
AT&T changed the specifics of the "unlimited" plan a while ago without changing the actual name of the plan, to keep people happy. So the "unlimited" and "3GB" data plans are essentially similar now.
Im with O2 Uk
We have two phones through my wife's contract.
On my SGS II I had unlimited data. I never realized just how much I used it until a O2 rep called to "let us know" I had used about 6 gig of data that month. Wanted to know what it was on and that all was ok, LOL
Funnily 4 months before my upgrade they called again to say they will not be continuing the Unlimited option as they deemed 1-2 gig to be enough.
And trust me, you don't miss it till its gone! Im now watching every darn kb pass in fear of it running out, for me 1-2-3 GB is nothing.
The frustrating thing is, they wont offer me a plan with more than 2 gb a month??...
So Im now having to look in to getting a external Bluetooth sim thing (tbh, cant remember what they're called, which isn't helping me find the one im after.. )
I'm now jealous of a friend that has kept his unlimited plan for the past 5 or so years.... (was a special offer, bet they didn't see him keeping it this long lol) He's even forfeited his phone upgrades to keep the contract, smart guy.
My advice, Never give up your unlimited mobile internet.
Oh, and just before all you haters start hating, I don't tether and I don't torrent on my plan  , I do alot of streaming :good:

You clearly know nothing of the people in the US that run 90-150 gigs per month off of their unlimited LTE data plans.
I used to have unlimited when I had a BlackBerry years ago but when I switched to the Samsung Captivate I had to change the data plan and I lost it. I've had 2 a month ever since and I always have to monitor my data with 3g watchdog. Thinking about changing it to 3 GB when I pre-order the HTC one since it's only $5 more a month.

Didn't want to take a chance of loosing my grandfathered unlimited data plan so I went to a corporate store yesterday and placed the order there for upgrade of phone only. They also included the media link which was out of stock yesterday afternoon but was restocked later in the evening online.
Keep the unlimited. I use up a lot of data on Plex app and DirecTV alone.

Ok, so just to be sure I'm on the same page, when I upgraded, I selected the box which said this, and my current (post-upgrade) services show:
Data Unlimited SmartPhone Personal
Data Plan for SmartPhones. Unlimited domestic data usage. Only available for upgrades. Requires customers to be on a "Gold List" Data Unlimited SmartPhone Plan prior to upgrade to 4G device.
I presme that's the right one, yes?
I am in the same position. I have the unlimited plan and I'm thinking about getting the HTC One.
I will not give up my plan because I regularly go over 3gb. I received the text message threatening to throttle my speed after 3gb but never really noticed the difference after 3gb.
I remember when I was upgrading to the iphone 4 back in 2010 I had the choice of keeping unlimited data or drop to 2GB and save $5 a month. At the time I was not even close to 2gb so I dropped down to save some $$.
Fast forward to 2013.
I do about 6GB a month. Without even trying. LTE was a game changer.
I regret giving up my unlimited data.. They even raised the throttling to 5GB.
I ordered online but before doing so I talked to representatives. They told me if I ordered it but called them before activation they can make sure that you don't lose the unlimited data. I have backup in the form of a chat online with their representative just in case they try to not honor their word.

At&T throttle?
ATT has threatened to throttle my unlimited every month for the past year or two. I always get the same two messages and it never happens. At least not that I can tell. I'm sure they do throttle, but it's never actually happened to me. I run speedtest pretty regularly and Netflix never has any trouble.
Never let them take away your unlimited data. They will have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

Still on UNlimited data..not for long says Verizon.

Yeah that, I'm pretty sure, was just before they announced that when you renew your contract you also have to update your data plan. Last summer is when, if I remember correct, they announced the whole "All contract LTE devices will have to update their data plan" thing.
I think we will be able to keep our unlimited data until Verizon rolls out VoLTE. When phones no longer need CDMA voice plans we will have to change our plans and get booted from unlimited data.
Personally, I'm convinced that VZW will be dropping unlimited data within the next year. My theory is that they had been waiting for most folks with unlimited data to complete their contracts (and at this point, it's pretty close). Anyone who paid full retail to keep unlimited data will be pissed, but Verizon won't owe them anything. The only folks Verizon would "owe" would be people still under contract, and really, all that VZW would have to do is allow them to leave without paying ETF.
Once most unlimited data customers are out of contract, VZW can drop it (or just stop grandfathering) without much penalty since if you're out of contract already, waving the ETF doesn't apply to you anyway (so it won't cost VZW anything but reputation). I believe we're approaching the point where the only folks that still have unlimited data and are on contract are just those who used the loophole of trading upgrades with a second line; I can't imagine that there's too many people like that. I'm sure someone at Verizon has done the calculation, and once the threshold is hit, they'll make the change.

Until the day comes where Verizon will shut off unlimited, I will continue to stream my Google Play Music at high quality with no caching and no wi-fi (so that I AM on the 4G network when I use my GBs a month, like a f---in' boss!)
When that day does come that unlimited is gone, I'll just go to either Sprint or T-Mobile, like a f'in boss! No reason for me to pay $30 for 2GB, 4GB, or even a whopping generous 6GB when I do 20GB-40GB a month like a (well....you get the point...lol.)
If verizon ever forces me to lose my unlimited data ....i am gone. Myself and im sure many others will leave verizon as the only thing holding on to us is the unlimited. They get new phones way too late. Some phones they dont even get. Att isnt much better on their rates but atleast they get every phone that comes out. There plans are pretty much comparable. Service wise...well for me verizon hasnt been its greatest lately ( might be the antenna is my last s3 and now this s4 [ samsung problem ])
They make far too much money off most unlimited data users. They would rather milk those customers until they attrit naturally.
Too much financial risk. Most people do not "abuse" unlimited plans, so Verizon has far more to lose than gain. Not to mention the families on plans would be lost as well, of which most are not unlimited.
Nobody with any common business sense would force people out unless absolutely abusing the system and the user profoundly compromises the profit margin for that account. I could see Verizon target people like that.

If they're not profitable, they'll get rid of them, and should.
How would they not be? Most do not abuse and the current rates are gouging level bad for caps. They would easily lose hundreds of millions if they cut unlimited, since most would leave. Human nature is very spiteful and very punitive to the perceived aggressor.
Counting family attached lines, home lines and entertainment packages they would hurt exponentially worse if not allowing natural attrition to reduce unlimited users.

I think you are overestimating how many people are out there really have been clinging to unlimited data. Its a big echo chamber here and in other android discussions.
I doubt Verizon will forcefully get rid of unlimited unless they have to. It's not really a problem for them, so why upset a small subset of users for any reason? Especially when the costs of these unlimited users are being recouped by the unused device subsidies?
Unfortunately I believe that "have to" moment will come with VoLTE.

I work in the mobile department at Best Buy, and you'd be surprised at how many customers I get looking to upgrade, or find a solution to keeping their unlimited plan. Its at least 1 out of 10 customers (or at least it feels like that to me). Now granted most of those people are using megabytes instead of gigabytes on their "unlimited" plan, however it does seem like people are still trying to hold onto it. I know my plan would go up by $70/month. I certainly will be switching plans when i need my next phone, but thankfully I'm on the S4.

There are millions still (local rep estimate). A key reason for all the newer plans and financing for full price phones that VZW does now. They were feeling pressure by the install base. Unlike At&t that screwed up with theirs.
Even though the article is outdated, they are still trying to get rid of the unlimited customers.
This applies to AT&T as well.
I really can't fathom the reasoning behind this, as the majority of unlimited customers never even come close to using the equivalent cost amount (based on regular plan pricing for 2 or 4 GB).
They also pick on those who "abuse" it by telling them they are within the top 5% or other things they use to threaten the customer and give "due cause" for removing the plan.
One has to wonder the legality of this, but does anyone actually know an attorney who not only has time to read the entire TOS/AUP, but also cares enough to review someone's individual contract?
I would say the best way to prevent them from the inevitable is just to leave when they do.
The problem with that method is that not only will it still happen, but I believe the user base may be too large for this to make a significant impact.
I also don't think Verizon cares that much about getting rid of us unlimited users.
Many of us pay full price for our phones. This will offset the small amount of extra data we use.
Also I read a ling time ago that 4g LTE data is cheaper for Verizon to provide than 3g.
Also when I went in and paid full retail for two S4's the salesgirl told us that not many do this. She tried to sell me a tiered plan but realized it would cost me $70 more per month for only the 2 gig shared plan. Obviously not a good deal. I have 5 lines and pay $10 per line for unlimited because of a $20 per line discount.
But if they ever did take it away from us I would go to a prepaid plan elsewhere. Unlimited and the good network are the only things keeping me with Verizon. I like to root and rom and Verizon is the most restrictive.
Someday I will have more fun elsewhere.

Not all in-store Verizon folks are idiots, and why an Edge plan saves money

Yes some are bone heads but some aren't. Here's my recent experience.
I have 4 phones on my account with a 10 gig shared data plan. My daughter wanted to move from Sprint to Verizon so my wife and I went to a Verizon store to help her through the transaction. One of the first things I do when I talk to one of the CS reps is state my position and what I want from this conversation with him/her. I like to see what they know or don't know. My rep, John, saw that I wasn't an average clueless customer and he immediately shifted into a smarter mode. Kudos for that.
So, my daughter decides on a Moto X. He runs the numbers and quickly figures out that it's much cheaper for her to join our family plan. No problem, we'll do that. She now pays us monthly for 1/5 of the total bill.
Then he pulls this one: "I'd like for you to look at the Edge plan for that Moto X." Ok, I'm not dumb, I've read all about the Edge plan. Yes it's no contract and yes you can switch to a new phone after a year but you pay for the phone as you go. I've looked at the numbers and it never makes sense to get Edge unless you just can't wait to upgrade phones. But boy do you pay for it.
Right now my opinion of John is changing. He's trying to pull a fast one. So I object saying, "I'm not interested in Edge." He comes back with, "What if I can prove it saves you money?" "OK, wise guy," I'm thinking, "do you take me for an idiot? Show me how smart you are, bonehead." Instead, I say, "Really? How?"
And he shows me. The way the Edge program works is that the monthly cost of the phone on an Edge plan is retail cost divided into 20 months. In the case of the Moto X it's $400 retail or $20 per month. Turns out if you have a 10 gig, or higher, data plan they discount the Edge program by $25 for EACH phone on the Edge plan. So, in her case the $20 plan minus the $25 discount reduced the plan by $5 compared to a 2 year subsidized contract. "So," I thought, "this guy really knew what he was doing."
Other advantages to Edge: The phone can be upgraded after 60% of the retail price is paid off. That's 12 months. If you want to trade it in sooner than 12 months then pay the difference to get up to 60%. This is a trade-in, you don't keep the phone. However, if you do keep the phone for 20 months it's yours to keep, no trade in necessary.
The break even point is phone that retails for $500. At that point the monthly payment is $25 and the discount is $25.
An HTC One and LG G2 are break even on Edge. A Note 3, S5 and LG G3 are only $5 more on Edge. All in all, it turns out, Edge is a pretty good deal if you have the 10 Gig plan.
In the end, my daughter was happy, I'm happy and it was a great experience. So, not all CS reps are idiots.

Yeah. Because of how much data I use, they told me they would give me all the deals of a more everything plan plus 20% off my whole bill. Then I said I already have 20% off through a worker who worked there years ago. They said it would add on top of that. So 40% off plus what ever more eveything. But given how much data I use, wouldn't do anything for me.
You lost me at "some aren't"
Nice experience. Not sure why you keep calling him a bone head in your mind. If you knew about the edge and the savings you get (-$25 for 10gb), then the sale would be as easy as in and out. But then again looks like you didn't know of that last part about the savings. Anyways congrats on your new phone purchase.

First of all, if you read your contract you'll see that they have the right to change the contract at any time. In essence, legally, they can boot you off of unlimited data anytime they want. There's nothing you can do about it, you signed the contract. Right now they won't do that because there are too many unlimited plan customers, including my phone, that it would get bad press.
Another loophole changes in August were people would have someone on their family plan buy a new phone and they switched the SIM card to be able to upgrade their phone without paying full price. That goes away on August 24th.
Right now the only way left to keep unlimited data is to buy a full phone at full price, not a discounted price. However, I expect to see that change in the future. I believe that within the next 12 months Verizon will change their policy with regard to unlimited. They won't kill it but you will lose it if your phone's MEID changes. In effect, the only way to keep unlimited data is to never change to a different phone. Lose your phone, break your phone, or upgrade to a new phone and your unlimited data plan will go away. Verizon has stated LOUD AND CLEAR that they don't like unlimited data plans and that they will eventually end.

Edit: You are always under contract, the one you signed when you first joined Verizon. The phone may be paid off but the contact always exists as long as you use their network. You are just under the month-to-month portion of the contract.

No you are not under a contract when month to month. There are no binding terms keeping me locked to any set rules or conditions. However, there is the TOS I agreed to back when I first joined. Aside from that I have been a VZW customer for 15yrs and they have never ended or terminated any service I have had with them. They may discontinue a older plan, but they have never forced me off of any plan I was on. I have no reason to believe they would start doing such things. Just because they did away with the loop hole(add a line/transfer device/put dumb phone on added line) to keep unlimited does not mean they are going to start forcing people off thier unlimited plans. Even if they did, I would simply jump on a shared plan...it is what it is.
Boy did I luck out. Just read this about august 24th. I got a note 3 yesterday! Still unlimited.... and my upgrade I'd in November, seems like people better get their phones now! So what if you buy a used phone and swap sims?? Post Aug 24th...

Another loophole changes in August were people would have someone on their family plan buy a new phone and they switched the SIM card to be able to upgrade their phone without paying full price. That goes away on August 24th.

That's not true, the only loop hole they are closing is that if you add a new line to get a smartphone you have to keep the data plan on that phone. You can still use an upgrade on another smartphone line then transfer the SIM, or if you have an upgrade on your unlimited, transfer it to another smartphone do the upgrade then swap the SIM cards(this is what I just did a couple of months ago). So basically I have an unlimited line and my wife has a tiered plan, we both get to use our upgrades, we just have to do the transfer gimmick.

As. Long as wee keep our current unlimited plans and buy our devices outright then I do not see how they can legally boot us off of unlimited.

I worked for Verizon, and have recently left to pursue other opportunities. I posed this very same thought to my account manager. She said that the most likely scenario is that there will be a point when they will absolutely remove unlimited data. They can say we are sorry but that phone cannot be put on a line with unlimited data. You have to also scour the terms and conditions. The company does reserve the right to terminate any plans and change existing plans. This is whether or not you are in contract. I am pretty sure they have a legal team that has already discussed this. I always see threats by people saying they will leave and go to this company or that company; but let's face it, choices for phone companies are very limited. You go to T-Mobile and you have limited areas, same with Sprint. The two companies that are in control are Verizon and AT&T. They have effectively formed a duopoly. It is not by accident that they have nearly the same exact plans. All I am saying is enjoy the data while you have it.

the problem with putting any stock in what your account manager says is the simple fact that one could speak to 10 different account managers and get 10 different answers.
Amen to that, verizon employees must not have group trainings as they All seem to have a different answer for you.

Most people do not realize the 25 dollar credit per edge line per month on the bill.
