[Q] NOVA - Disable Sense? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Is there any way to disable Sense if I'm using Nova or another 3rd-party launcher? I still have Sense running in the background eating up resources even though I'm not using it... ugh.

No sir.... Best bet is to flash the somesense Rom and use a custom launcher. The only other way to do it is through an aosp Rom. Currently we have a pretty smooth cm9 in the dev section, but it doesn't have a few vital things working yet

You can freeze our uninstall the sense launcher along with any apps/widgets you don't use if you have a third party launcher installed. I've done this. I wouldn't go uninstalling things without knowing what it is first.

That requires root I assume?

Yes and a lot of research as you might disable a vital component on accident and then you have to really flash a new Rom.

Yes, to freeze sense and other widgets u need to root. Wish u didn't. Hate having to give up twc tv on phone and renting movies thru google play. But I guess torrents and better multitasking will make up for it...

As stated above, you must be rooted to do this stuff, but in case you wanted to know...
I uninstalled just about every sense element I could find in TitaniumBackup and use Apex launcher in place of the stock one. Interestingly, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the stock ICS lockscreen popped up after uninstalling the sense lockscreen, so I don't have to run any 3rd party LS app. Also I have uninstalled the stock browser and clock, replacing them with the apks I pulled from CM9, mostly because I like the look and feel a little better, but also sense alarm wouldn't display on the ICS LS--CM9 alarm does. I had the CM9 message app on my LTE also, but found I was unable to send or receive MMS. I didn't really investigate too much further to try to get it working and I don't know if it is even possible. EX Dialer offers a more appealing phone app than does the sense version as far as I'm concerned.
There are ways to make your phone look differently, but as you said sense eats up the background, and I feel the CM9 apps run a little lighter. I enjoy a much better experience without the Sense stuff as it feels a little closer to AOSP now.
Good luck should you decide to try some of the suggestions, and remember, always always have a backup.

How did you remove the location icon?

What kind of vital things? Is it stable enought to use as a daily?

The part of sense that is still running is the 35MB shell or so of basic sense functionality throughout the whole phone.
You're not able to get rid of that, but if you use another launcher you already not loading up the launcher portion of sense. If you used the sense launcher, you'd see Sense go up to over 100MB, since the basic sense of 35 + the launcher of about 70 something will kick you over 100MB. So the fact that it still sits in the 30s shows you're not using the launcher, but Apex or Nova or whatever is probably taking up 50-70MB itself.

Right, so really no win unless you root and disable... thanks for the input all.

Can you prevent Sense homescreen from loading at all?

I prefer SPB Mobile Shell 3D, but I am noticing that Sense is running concurrently. If I switch to Sense, it comes up instantly, and all the widgets are running/etc.. How can I stop this? I love Mobile Shell 3D, but if Sense is being a hog, I might have to learn to like it...

welcome to the world of locked bootloaders
not until this thing gets rooted
edit: you can probably get adw or launcer pro but im not sure if you can actually stop sense from starting.
remove all the widgets, etc off the sense homescreens, then go into settings>accounts/sync and make sure nothing is syncing that you dont want to.

Maybe I misunderstand how launchers work... on an AOSP ROM, when I load up Mobile Shell 3D, does that prevent ADW or LauncherPro from working? This experience so far makes me think of WM6.5, where stuff was just an overlay.
You can stop Sense and use a different launcher but you obviously can't remove it from your phone(yet). Infact some of the system files will still be running regardless if you stop it.
like they said, just clear out ur sense homescreens and set ur preferred launcher as default, u have enough ram so noting to worry bout as far as memory usage
if u change the default to spb then restart the phone then sense might not start up... it will show if its running in the running apps menu

Sense will still run. The phone needs the Sense framework to run even if you use launcherpro or any other launcher as the default. You'll have to wait until the phone is rooted with unlocked bootloader in order to fix this with an AOSP rom.
I'm not even referring to the Sense framework... I mean the homescreen itself... it still runs. Upon reboot, Sense homescreen appears, then SPB pops up over that... it bothers me so much that I uninstalled SPB 3D until this phone is rooted with an AOSP ROM.
read as: I'll probably just never use SPB Mobile Shell 3D ever again. Oh well.

The Sense 3 launcher is pretty damn nice, at least you won't miss much, and will gain some nice Sense widgets.
Also, just because the Sense Launcher (Rosie) is chilling in RAM doesn't mean it's running.

It's running, because if I remove default homescreen in Applications, and hit home again to go to Sense, it just pops up instantly... not like when the phone is booting, or when I chose a different homescreen on my Evo.

Perhaps one could use a task manager of sorts to see how much CPU/RAM it is using. I'd prefer for it to not use it at all. I liked how on Windows Mobile, you could kill off the homescreen--because it was basically a widget.

Best launcher for Photon 4G? Or custom ROM?

I'm the proud owner of a Motorola Photon 4G as of today. This is replacing my Sensation, and will only be used internationally (Asia, so 900/1800 Mhz 2G and 2100Mhz 3G).
Now, I see that there is a way to get rid of the Sprint hands-free activation on every boot, and I presume I can delete some of the Sprint bloatware as well. I noticed that the stock Blur launcher is kinda laggy even scrolling from screen to screen, but the rest of the phone performs very well. So if I do get a different launcher, what should I get?
Otherwise, should I do a custom ROM? I've had every phone of mine all ROM'ed up but I don't know if its worth doing that to a Motorola phone since they usually have encrypted bootloaders. Any stable ROMs that are well-suited for international use?
Im using Nemus Launcher. Its not too bad.
Good luck with getting rid of the lag tho. My whole phone is laggy even with another launcher.
If you unlock, try this ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1587770 Sprint bloat is removed, rom is fast, works great. Or you can use Loki's bloat remover. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1575259

Its butter smooth and i have 450mb Ram free all time
I have no lag at all -- I'm using Go Launcher, and have "DeBlurred" the phone as bricky23 mentioned (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1575259
).
Also just fyi, I've read that some folks feel a daily reboot does wonders to keeping the Photon running smoothly (just opinion, no facts/data to back that up).

I'm currently using MX Launcher. It's got some nice features, but shallow customization and some weird quirks. See my list of caveats in the topic about it. I still think it's worth using, but it's nowhere near as polished as some of the others.
I rephrased my issues with it to a more positive light and emailed the developer. I'd like to see this launcher get better as it does a couple things really well.
1. Cover screen. The center icon on the dock (and you can't change it) brings up the cover screen, which has a clock which follows you based on the tilt sensor. There's a power control widget here, the clock is beautiful, and it has some preset launcher icons on it. You can change them (open the clock by long-pressing 12, 3, 6, or 9 to set that icon) but you can only pick from a few and you have to use stock apps.
2. Long-press icons brings up a menu. Other launchers have this, but in MX, you can hit Info to pull up that app's Settings > Applications > Manage Applications page. Good for clearing the cache or force closing it.
Don't bother looking at the skins. Half are incompatible with our phone. The other half cost money. There is one that is free and compatible, but it's just a cover screen. No home screens. Might be a bug but I removed it promptly.
Thanks for the advice, y'all. I rooted the phone today and deblurred it already. I'm quite liking ADW Launcher right now. What's a good AOSP icon pack I can download? I'm not familiar with customizing launchers.

Thanks, I downloaded a free ICS icon pack/theme. My phone works pretty well now!
However, I'm sad that it doesn't play a bunch of my video files that always used to play on my other devices, mostly HTC ones but some AOSP as well. When I downloaded MX Player to view them, it told me that it is using SW decoding.
Is there a way to get better support for media files? The videos in question are plain old mp4, downloaded from Youtube. Some 480p, some 720p and a couple 1080p which worked on my Sensation, so I thought they'd work on the Photon as well since it has a similar chipset.
hi just curious,
which one is better on photon
ADW launcher
or
Go Launcher ?
and if we apply the "deblur" mod, how to get rid of the ADW to replace it with the Go launcher ?
I think GO is better than ADW but if you ask any 2 people, you're liable to get 2 different answers. I can't tall ya why I prefer GO. For one, it's free, but then again it pushes its widgets and locker on you. Two, ADW rubs me the wrong way. I don't know why. So no real, valid reasons. Try both. Use both, use Home Smack to switch.

Welp, I did some more reading and found out that since the Photon uses a Tegra 2 chipset, it is very picky about what it can decode in hardware. Luckily for me, a lot of my simple stuff works fine in SW decoding mode with MX Player. However, 720p and 1080p videos will need to be recoded.
I'm gonna try using Handbrake and report back. Too bad I don't have a more powerful CPU to re-encode stuff. Re-encoding stuff is why I was wary of my Zune client (I also have an HTC Titan).

I've used MIUI extensively when I had an EVO and a Defy, and I loved it. At this time, I didn't feel like it was the best since I want a stable experience and stock seemed the most stable.
Maybe when there's an ICS MIUI based on a stock Moto ROM.

Thank you for the analysis. I'll make a comment in that thread since I'm using GO Launcher now. Thank you for your work on Deblurring the Photon!
I've found that even though ADW uses less memory, GO Launcher seems to run smoother. Luckily, the Photon has 1GB of RAM.
I would definitely recommend going the custom rom route.
Right now I am using cm7.2[kang] with jokers 1.3 oc kernel and it works great. This is the most stab, much faster than stock although the battery only lasts about 4/5 as long for me. I have tried cm9 but there are still many issues right now and I am waiting for some of these to be ironed out before switching over.
As far as launchers go, cm7.2 came with ADW installed stock, and it is very snappy, especially if tuned to take out extra visual effects etc.

[Q] Would you keep Touchwiz or use a custom launcher?

Ok, so I know this is a hugely personal thing, but, will you keep Touchwiz or use a custom launcher?
Personally, I don't like the look of Touchwiz at all. With that in mind one of the great ICS launchers (Nova and Apex) should seem like an easy decision!?
The thing is I am not sure how many of the new features you may lose out on by giving up on Touchwiz... will features like SmartAlert and SmartStay still work?

I as well will be changing the launcher. Yes, your extra Touchwiz like features will remain (ie SmartStay, SmartAlert, and the redesigned apps such messaging and the settings and the drop down notification shade) as those are baked into the firmware. The only you thing you might (and probably WILL) be losing are your Touchwiz widgets and from past experience with them that's not a deal breaker at all.
I will say one thing as someone who's deciding between the HOX and the SGSIII that I'm a bit disappointed that Touchwiz hasn't matured quite the same way that Sense has. Sense just plain looks nicer and you can clearly see the ICS undertones. I feel like ICS has been buried beneath Touchwiz. And I don't like that :-(

Exact layout after flashing new rom

Just a quick question here, something which takes me a while when setting up a new Rom.
Is there anything which can copy your homescreens layout and then restore it after flashing a new Rom?
Titanium puts the exact apks back in the system with the same data but it'd be nice to have something to put the folders and apps back too.
Any ideas?
Based on sense roms ICS.

I've heard doing that works well since it restores home screens, apps, and data, but can cause problems if restoring data between roms, especially between odex and deodex.
You may want to consider a different launcher like ADW EX or Apex. Both have backup and restore capabilities built in.

My apologies, maybe I should have been more precise with what I asked, I automatically assumed that everyone would do at least a superwipe prior to flashing a new Rom, you can't report issues without it.
So to reiterate, is there a way to get your home screens back the way they were after a superwipe?, Its only as it is a pain in the arse to get it back to normal again.
but ill give that a whirl anyway,

I understand the loyalty, especially on ICS. But I purchased ADW EX when it was 10 cents and have now been playing with Apex Launcher and they are smooth. If you miss the sense widgets, Android Pro Widgets (for agenda, friendstream, etc) and Beautiful Widgets (for the clock) are good substitutes.
Having said that, I currently run Sense too, so like I said, I understand your reluctance to switch.

Yea I hear you there, but it isn't just the widgets its the whole feel of it, even the phone book is better, on stock all you get is a line of code which would normally link to fb.
Sense integrates everything really well, and they have come on in leaps and bounds in terms of performance.
I do sometimes make the switch to the stock look but I'm always drawn back.

Not trying to convince you to change, but fyi, the launchers I mentioned still allow use of the sense apps, just not the widgets. So, the phone book, dialer, gallery, camera app, etc are still sense. They do not require you to use any stock ASOP apps.

de-Sensifying the phone?

So I'm loving this One, but some of the stock apps I'm not liking (primarily MMS, mail, browser, keyboard, launcher)
I've installed Nova, Chrome, Swiftkey, chomp, and gmail, which are doing a great job of replacing and I've nearly got the phone in a good place.
My problem is that the Sense lockscreen still shows the stock apps, including indicators for new text messages i've already read via chomp. Now that I'm using Nova Launcher, I can't figure out how to modify the sense lockscreen to change the apps that are at the base there.
Almost all of this is being done because while I like blinkfeed enough, I already use Flipboard and don't want that as my initial screen and it seems like Sense isn't going to allow us to have a more traditional homescreen with blinkfeed to the left or right. I'm also not a huge fan of swapping between modes of blinkfeed+icons and traditional home screen.
I'm posting this here in T-mo General looking for advice because flashing another ROM isn't an option for me. My understanding is that flashing a ROM will lose the wifi calling capability, and that is really important for me. What would you guys do?
You should only lose wifi calling if you flash a AOSP based ROM. I understand that you want to "de-sense" you're phone so an AOSP ROM would be your best bet.
This phone is brand new so development is still slow right now but I bet you should start seeing some Sense-based ROM's without all the Sense bloat start popping up soon
In regards to your lockscreen issue, have you looked into using a lockscreen replacement like WidgetLocker?
Did you replace the icons in the dock on Rosie (Sense launcher).
I'm still using the Sense launcher and my lockscreen shows what I have on my dock.

I'm gonna take an educated guess based on my experience with Samsung. Usually custom camera apps are deeply integrated in custom android versions (sense, tw, etc). You can pull the apk and may even get it to install but my guess is that it will FC

If you look in the AT&T sub forum of the One, there is a ahpla of CM10.1 which means that CM10.1 is being worked on right now for the One. I am sure it will work with all HTC Ones once it is done. I would give it a month or two and we should be pretty good off. It is still really early in the game.
