[Q] MicroSIM activation on rooted handset - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A quick question around SIM activation... Due to the idiosyncratic way in which Orange activates microSIMs on upgrade handsets via Phones4U, there's a six day delay between delivery of the handet and activation of the SIM.
Hence, I've had my handset for just under a week - Orange should hopefully be activating the SIM today, but in the meantime, I've rooted the phone and installed a deodexed stock ROM.
Is this likely to prevent SIM activation? Or is it all done exclusively via the mobile network?

I can't say for certainty, but my hunch is I doubt it'll make any difference.
Slightly on-topic, sort of, I cut my normal Orange SIM down to microSIM size yesterday after realising once I'd bought the S3 it took the small one, and I had loads of trouble getting it working on the network - it'd connect for a few minutes, then I'd get the circle with a line through it, indicating not allowed or something.
Either way, seems to have settled today.

Radio GA GA - Help!

Hi Folks,
I was having the issue with my Vario II (on my 3rd Handset) where the phone enters standby and never wakes up until a soft reset.
When the 3rd handset arrived I decided to bite the bullet and go for WM Black and see if it made the handset any better. Unfortunately, as good as the new ROM (now on V2) is, it didnt solve my hanging issue.
The next thing I decided to do was change the radio ROM. I first went to the 1.38.10 and then to 1.38.11 and then to 1.27.00, as the later was decribed as being the most stable.
As you have probably guessed by now, the issue still plagues me....Even more so since the radio upgrades. The symptoms are as follows;
- Some calls I answer go silent after around 30 secs and I need to soft reset
- The phone can show full bars of signal but the phone diverts to answering machine
- When connecting to the internet, the icons shows as connecting but then drops to no signal (showing a !) then after a while will start to reconnect. Sometimes I need to soft reset to get the connection again
I am wondering if there is something else I am missing that could be causing the issue. I am using it today with no apps and still have the same issues as above plus the freezing issue.
Is there anything else I can change???? or am I just cursed?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers and thanks in advance
Aidan
I would say, try your SIM card in a TOTALLY different phone (not just a different Hermes) As you would have to be fairly unlucky for it to happen with THREE seperate devices, especially with different ROMs also.
If there is a handset available to you that is either a tmobile or SIM unlocked.....give it a go.

I belive it's your SIM card also..ask your provider to replae the SIM card for you. Just tell them your issues and it happened to three handset with the same SIM. I bet they will able to replace the SIM card without charge.

Yep SIM cards cost JACK ALL to the providers. If they do charge you then thats gotta ring alarm bells!!!
Hanging on wake-up was my big disappointment when going from Vario I to Vario II.
It decreased after upgrading to WM6 (first black 1.2, now black 2.0). In my case the SPB mobile shell also did not seem to do the problem any good, probably because it starts the 'now' screen on wake-up.
I have not much software on my device and have very few hanging issues.
I work for a Cingular retailer, and I just signed my fathers business up. Someone had told me that the IMEI on the account had to match the phone on a 3g phone or the exact same symptoms you are seeing would occur. I confirmed it with my pop's business. the three people using 3g phones had serious problems with calls going to VM, not getting txts, and poor service in general. Once i fixed the serial numbers Cingular-side, everything was peachy. This happens to be my first post (longtimelurker) so if I'm full of ****, feel free to tell me. Check with your service provider and make sure they have the right IMEI on file. If not, you'll prolly have to go to a store to have a clerk fix it, but it'll be worth your trip if im right .
Hope I helped.

I don't think IMEI is the issue here. I just signed up with Cingular and got a Motorola K1..but the SIM is a 3G sim. I simply pop that into my Hermes and it's been working for 2 month now without any issues. Another thing with Cingular...the IMEI on their database is automatically updated..it's not like you have a Motorola phone and switched the SIM to a SonyEricsson phone and still using the Motorola IMEI #....it will not work that way. In fact, all GSM providers will automatically update the IMEI in their system once the SIM is registered in their network. I can confirm that with my HTC tytn with the Cingular's online account. You can check the online account pretty much on what type of phone you current have. If I use the Motorola K1, the online account will be updated as unknow phone due to it's new I guess...but when I use the HTC tytn..it's automaticlly updated as HTC 8525...even I manually change the phone type to other phone...after couple minutes..I log back on and it will show the HTC 8525 again. Base on this, I am sure IMEI is not the issue here. One thing to note is that I did get that hanging on wake up when I have the SPB software installed.
i can concur about the IMEI... i havent changed my IMEI on my account since i had a sony ericsson a few years back... and i have no data problems.. i take that back, i had some when i first got the 8525, but then found out i needed the white 3G sim, since then it has been flawless.
Awaiting Sim
Thanks for all the advice. I tried the phone with someone elses sim card the other day and it seemed to behave itself. I am going to phone t-mobile and ask them for a replacement SIM.
Will let you know how I get on.
Cheers

AGGGHHHH!
It doesnt get any better....
I just phoned T-Mobile and asked them for a replacement SIM to be sent out. The girl I spoke to said that she could order me a new SIM which would be out in between 1-3 days but she would have to disconnect my current SIM when the new one was despatched! This means no phone for this time, which I need for business
I asked whether I could phone for activation when the new SIM arrived but this she tells me is not possible.......AGGGGHHH!
She did suggest that I could pay 15quid for an 'interactive' swap over at a T-Mobile store but I have issues getting to a store during the week and they are then going to see that VM6 Black edition is on the phone!
Any suggestions?

What the hell?!?! Thats bullcrap if ive ever heard it, when i got a replacment USIM from O2 my existing one worked until i called O2 to activate the new one? Maybe T-Mobile has a backwards way of provisioning them?! That sucks dude. Suggest you call them again (if you havent already got an order through) and do another request...you may hit the jackpot with a different operator?!

As far as I understand how GSM works...The T-Mobile lady is correct. You can't have the two SIMs having the same #, one has to be deactivated before the new one is active. But if you are sure the new SIM will get to you in a day or two, you can have them to schedule deactivation of the old SIM two days later, schedule the new SIM to be active in two days..the only donw time you have is probably a an hour or two if the timing is correct. If you are able to go to a T-mobile store for direct swap, you can get the new SIM working within an hour but they shouldn't be charging you $15 at the store even you have WM6 black on the phone becasue the phone is not faulty, the faulty part is the SIM and they should honor their warranty.

Agreed on the warranty there dude.
O2 simply sent out a replacment USIM, obviously not activated yet. It arrived and i called them, they took the sim card number and said I should lose reception on my existing sim (it wasnt 3G ready) and thats when i should put the new one in, as soon as i lost reception i swapped and it was working (got the U symbol straight away).
I figure T-mobile would do the same?!?!
Bit the bullet yesterday and paid 15 quid for a new SIM card. It has made he haw difference. Still got major issues. The phone has no signal most of the time and even on the rare occasions when it does, the calls go to answerphone.
The signal shows an exclamation mark (!) and the only way I can get rid of it is to do a hard reset and it works for a couple of hour (or less). It is as though it is constantly in flight mode.

[SOLVED] Cannot use GSM radio - help needed!

I have since discovered that my IMEI has been blocked. This phone was bought off eBay in January but apparently the block was only placed on August 7th. I'm gutted, I'm really hoping this can be resolved or that I am covered by insurance.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi everyone,
I'd greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me. Here is what happened:
About 2 weeks ago I upgraded radio from 1.38 to 1.50, which worked and everything was fine.
Last week I went on holiday to a little place on the beach, where signal has normally been a problem. Not so this time, I had plenty of signal and was talking and texting fine.
On Tuesday it worked all morning and then in the afternoon the signal dropped off and it said "no service". I cycled the phone radio a few times and rebooted the phone, all to no avail. I concluded that the local cell tower had a fault and that I wasn't in range of another.
On Wednesday we took a trip and, as I expected, a few miles down the road my phone picked up signal again, consistent with the faulty cell tower hypothesis. I recieved a load of texts that had been waiting for me, made a few calls and everything was fine. When we got back to where we were staying, the signal held - I presumed the fault had been fixed.
Later that evening the signal dropped out again as before. I assumed that perhaps the fault hadn't been sufficiently fixed in the cell tower, so while annoying I presumed when I got to a different area the signal would come back like it did before.
However, it didn't. We came home on Friday and it hasn't picked up a signal, just says "no service". If I manually search for networks it finds O2 (as well as all the others) and I can select it, but it still says "no service".
I plugged in a T-Mobile sim, and it found signal immediately, BUT I cannot send/recieve calls or texts, people calling me hear a strange problem about it being unable to connect their call, and text message delivery reports give the same (not the message that one gets if the phone is switched off) - so it is obviously on the network but something is stopping it using the network - when I try and make a call I instantly get those four beeps which indicate the call has ended.
I then phoned O2 and said I think my SIM is dead, and they agreed and are sending me a new one. However, I then tried my old O2 sim again and got a brief signal, but still the same problem as the T-Mo sim - cannot send/recieve calls/texts/anything.
My O2 sim now says no service, although I have tried it in another phone and it works fine.
Since then I have re-flashed 1.38, hard reset the OS (Sleuth's v3) and flashed the O2 WM6 official rom with 1.47, all making no difference. I've tried forcing 2G and 3G and particular frequencies (it usually says it cannot apply these band settings, but after several reboots I sometimes manage to change it).
So, in summary:
Signal is very intermittent and usually says "no service".
Even when I do have signal, I cannot send/recieve calls/texts.
My O2 sim definitely works.
I have tried radios 1.50, 1.38 and 1.47 to no avail.
I have hard reset the ROM (Sleuth's v3) and flashed the O2 official ROM to no avail.
Desperate for help! Many thanks
I have also cleaned the SIM, SIM contacts in the phone, and checked that I can access the SIM card from the phone, and I can get the phone's IMEI etc so at least part of the radio seems to be working, and as mentioned before the SIM definitely works.
Thanks
Update:
I have tried Orange post-pay and Orange pre-pay sims and they both work fine, so it doesn't appear to be my phone that has broken.
However, my original O2 sim continues to work in another Nokia phone, suggesting that the sim isn't broken.
It may just be the pairing of that sim with my phone, which is the only thing I can think of. Does the Hermes apply sim "profiles" to sims which are inserted? Have I messed up the profile associated with that sim? My new O2 sim should come next week so we will see if that one works.
Also, the error messages of the text delivery reports sent to my phone while my O2 sim was in it say "Interworking Not Available" (this is from an Orange phone). Any idea what that means?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Shot in the dark here: how did you get your Hermes? Could it be blacklisted from O2 - i.e. could it be stolen from an O2 subscriber. (I would assume by the person you got it from, I am not accusng you of anything!)
Hi Todd,
Thanks for your reply. It's not something I'd thought of but it could fit the scenario. I got the phone off eBay back in January and had no problems with it until now. It's actually a T-Mobile branded one, (i.e. the MDA) rather than the XDA Trion. When I phoned O2 to ask if my account had been blocked and to get a new sim the person I spoke to said there was nothing to indicate that my account would have been blocked, which would presumably include any blocked IMEIs that were listed there. Also, if the phone had been blocked after being listed stolen it would have been blocked on all networks wouldn't it? If my new sim doesn't work I will phone O2 and ask them if my IMEI is blocked, so thanks for your suggestion.
As updated in the first message, my IMEI has been blocked, causing all the problems. The reason the Orange sims worked must be because the block hasn't propagated to the Orange network yet.
Hey i discovered i had the same problem today aswell i bourght the phone of Ebay for the first day it was working then next day i upgraded to WM6 and it stop working i did some research on why it stop working and here it was
Orange & O2:
If you place an active orange or
O2 sim into a blacklisted handset you
phone will not show any signal strength
at all! If the handset is a Nokia then a
"SIM card registration failed" message
will also be displayed. If your handset is an
Ericsson then an "Invalid Mobile" message
will be displayed. For most other manufacturers
the handset will simply show no signal!
Vodafone & T-Mobile
If you place an active Vodafone or T-Mobile sim into a blacklisted handset, the phone will appear to function perfectly UNTIL you try to make an outgoing call. When you try to call out from the handset you will hear a sequence of beeps and then the call will be dropped!!
wow nice story man , it seemed like a movie or something
anyway before i finish it i expected that your problem is that the phone IMEI is blacklisted . since its working with orange and other sims . its usually normal to get signal but u wont be able to make or recieve phone calls .
good luck .

Unlocked but can't see T-Mobile

Here's my problem, hopefully somebody can figure it out before I give up and sell this to somebody with AT&T.
I received a freshly refurbished AT&T 8525 (from ebay) and wanted to use it with a T-Mobile SIM. I upgraded to the latest AT&T distribution (WM6, downloaded from HTC), ran the HTC_Hermes_SIM_CID_Unlock_v3a successfully, put my SIM in and everything worked. After calling a friend and talking for about 5 minutes, the call mysteriously ended. I tried recalling (wouldn't connect) and then restarted the phone but it wasn't getting a signal.
Fearing the worst, I tried flashing the latest radio, rerunning the Unlock, and flashing various other ROMs (including an HTC, Schap's, and Pv Dvh Wm6.1 19209) but there was no change. The icon on the Today screen would either give an exclamation point or just continue scanning. If I went into the phone settings and tried to switch to manual network selection, I would sometimes get a choice of T-Mobile or Cingular but any connection attempt would result in a "Failed to register to network" message.
My SIM card works perfectly in both my old phone (HTC Tornado) and an older unlocked Nokia.
My last attempt was to put my friend's AT&T card into my A&T 8525 and it connected just fine with calling ability and everything! I've since run unlock many times, reflashed the radio, installed other ROMs and installed various version of Hard-SPL but none of them seem to be able to connect to the T-Mobile network using my SIM card (but have no problem connecting with my friend's). I can see the phone book on my SIM card so I know its not a bad SIM connection and it does not prompt me for a password (as it first did when I placed my SIM card in the phone when I first received it) so I'm pretty sure it is actually unlocked.
Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated!
Try borrowing a friend's phone with AT&T, shove his sim into your phone and talking on it for a few minutes and see if it still happens there. If It doesnt then try your SIM again. Also, try reflashing your radio without your simcard inserted.
I tried reflashing the latest radio without a SIM, then inserted my SIM but there was no change. I'll try talking on it for a while with my friend's SIM and see if anything happens, but I'm doubtful. Thanks for the help. Any other suggestions?
I've noticed that when I go into Settings>Phone>Network and select Manual, all the cooked ROMs I've tried end in a "Cannot read settings from the network." while AT&T's gives a selection of T-Mobile or Cingular (neither of which actually let me register to a network, though).
I put my friend's AT&T card in and called my own cell phone. The connection died after 5 minutes, but then I called my own cell phone again and they stayed connected for 10 minutes before I ended it. I put my SIM back into the 8525 and still no signal.
While the AT&T SIM is inserted, the Settings->Phone->Network screen is different. It just says:
Current Network: AT&T
and has a button for Find Network which just pops up a window saying "Registering on the network...
Any other ideas?
Send it back to whoever sold this to you on ebay. Not worth all the hassle that you are going thru. I have the same phone and bought mine off ebay as well. It worked perfectly out of the box with no problems. I have t-mobile and when I placed the sim in - bam - the phone just worked. I had to configure the pop3 email and mms settings manually, but that was it. I have htc's wm6 on it.
Thanks for the advice, but the first one I got from this guy the screen died after a couple of days. He said it was under warranty so I sent it back to him to get it replaced and it took him 3 months to finally return it to me. I really don't want to deal with him again.
I was wondering if there was a difference between the SIM cards. Could you please run the "SIM Manager" Application on your phone. Then go to Menu>Tools>SIM Information and check out the numbers there. Mine says:
Total Phonebook Size:
250
No. of Phonebook Entries
20
Max. length for name:
16
Max. length for phone number:
50
SMS Message storage capacity:
30
Although my friend who has an AT&T 3G SIM has slightly higher numbers for max. length of name, phone number, and SMS storage capacity.
I've also heard some stuff about specifically asking to get your account 3G enabled, but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with this problem.
I figure I'll go down to a T-Mobile store and see if I can get somebody to let me try a newer SIM in the phone before giving up completely and selling it.
That's too bad. I bought my phone from zendoo and they have a pretty good rating off of ebay. I'd hate to find out that your ESN or whatever is corrupted. Here are my settings
Total Phonebook Size:
250
No. of Phonebook Entries
11
Max. length for name:
16
Max. length for phone number:
40
SMS Message storage capacity:

Oh well, I guess I'll see what I can sell this for, wait until my contract is up at the end of summer, and then see what new phones are out then. Thanks for your guys help.

[Q] Galaxy Mega 6.3 GT19200

Hi I bought my new Galaxy mega 2 weeks ago in Bangkok from a reputable dealer so its a straight phone!. Got a local SIM from AIS and it was working faultlessly on both Phone and Data.
Got back to the UK and as my old phone has the 'Normal' sized Sim I ordered a Micro Sim from Virgin.
Now the problems start, when trying to make a phone call or message I get Not Registered on Network, but not all the time. I can occasionally make calls but for 90% of the time I get the above message despite have 3 bars signal power on the phone.
I called Virgin, they said it was the problem with the phone (but how come it worked perfectly in Thailand)
Called Samsung, they told me I had to call Bangkok.
Just as a follow up this phone is unlocked.
I find this phone perfect for almost everything I want.
Can anyone help with the problem? Ive tried all the Google fixes to no success.

dual SIMS - Both AT&T - not working right.

My mother uses an Honor 5X with a US/Mexico roaming contract plan on AT&T for calls, and a Mexican data SIM while while living in Mexico. She is currently visiting the US and we swapped out the Mexican SIM for an AT&T go phone sim. This set up fine and worked for a day or so, after which she left my house to visit elsewhere. The next day after leaving her contract line stopped working. After consulting with an AT&T store rep, they diagnosed that the old AT&T SIM was bad and gave her a new one. She thinks, but is not sure, that in the store both lines were working, but within minutes after leaving, the contract line displayed "emergency calls only". For the next week and a half, this continued and though she occasionally received calls on her contract line, she has not been able to make calls from it. The go phone line has worked as expected (though reception was spotty when other AT&T phones had full bars at the same location.) I do not recommend that service even for occasional use, it seems definitely deprioritized.
My question is this, is it expected that 2 SIMS from the same carrier would not work at the same time in this, or any, dual sim phone? This doesn't make sense to me since each SIM has its one IMIE. Each line should be treated as a separate device.
FYI disabling the go phone SIM entirely will enable full service on the contract SIM within a minute or so. Once the gophone SIM is enabled again, the contract SIM displays "emergency call only" within a few seconds.
Thanks for your input.
theres nothing like two same sims doesnt work and all,,
its better you get it to the service center
