[Q] Which Roms correct HTC sense multitasking?? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I am wondering if any roms are currently able to correct Sense Multitasking where all apps have to reload. Even Sense UI itself will reload at times. Is this an issue that can ever be fixed? Do we have to wait for HTC to release the source code for these issues to be addressed? Thanks for the info

use v6 supercharger then you can set whatever memory values you want..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16635544#post16635544

no rom has fixed it yet, and those instructions are hard as hell to follow..

I know its been said but my Palm Pre from 3 years ago with 256mb of ram could keep and run a dozen apps at once. On my Evo 4g LTE if I'm playing Angry Birds, get an e-mail and go back its reloads like it was never up in the first place.
HTC needs to find a better way to utilize this 1gb of ram...I miss my WebOS.

Try ram manager in the playstore by juwe11,same idea as v6 just in app form. Theres a free one also just less options. I've been using it forever, it definitely works.

Ahhh...WebOS....I still pull out my Palm Pre from time to time and play with it. Nothing has even come close to the smoothness & efficiency at multitasking the way WebOS did it. I love Android but WebOS is still my favorite mobile OS. Shame it never caught on.

I agree, I had hope that or would make it big. I hope the open source version is released soon

On Purpose?
I read an article that actually said that HTC did this on purpose with the one line of phones.

This phone is lagging all the way

Lag when browsing, waiting on everything to load, pinch to zoom is not smooth but choppy, hitting a text field requires me to wait 2 seconds before the keyboard comes up...
i need to wait bloody everywhere?
is there something that can fix this?
i already installed a faster rom and im rooted.
and besides the complaints about the gps, my gps is instant. no need to wait here luckily. also no complains about the 3d screen or whatever hardware.
the battery could be alot better though.
Probably the rom(s) you're using.

you must have something bogging your phone down. Ive never had any of those problems. Theres never any lag on this thing. The scrolling could be smoother of course, but thats one of the trade-offs having a phone with sense on it

iOS is just a simpler and more clean operating system. My EVO 3D is also laggy, disappointing for a dual core processor. I usually tether and use my iPod touch which surprisingly runs faster and smoother than my EVO 3D. And yes I am running custom ROM's and overclocked and nothing is more laggy than web browsing, even on WiFi. Scrolling is so choppy... I am not a fanboy of either operating system. I like things about both OS and both need things improved on, but for now iOS just seems to run better in terms of CPU optimization.

Im pretty sure a EVO 3D has more things going on in it that any iphone, hence it not being "super fast". I just think you should know how to troubleshoot your phone at least if you are gonna have a Android. And are you getting the laggyness after a fresh ROM flash? Or are you throwing about 1231231423 apps in there and expecting it to not slow down? Give us more input so we can help you
Why do people get so offended why they point out a possible flaw with their phone and suggest an alternative? Isn't that how great things are created? Some people act like you just smacked their first born child in the face. Get over yourselves, its a phone. Most people that talk bad about iOS usually have never used any apple product and are just jumping on the Android v Apple bandwagon. I love Android, and I also love Apple. I am not a close-minded idiot that can't think for his own so I decide to be on one side of the fence on this whole apple v android issue. Again, I love android, but apple has figured out how to make more, with less power and in my personal opinion, is still slightly superior.
yea people get real butt hurt. but i dont bother commenting about that.
this article explains it pretty good

No what we are telling you is that we are all running an Evo 3d and do not have the described lag. If you apply LOGIC you should not have lag either unless something is different i.e. your teeny brain. Your iPhone will get better reception if you drop it in a toilet preferably one with a fresh double S in it.

I agree here. I miss the Multitasking from webos.
I got the palm pre the day it released but it was just too slow to move forward. Switched to the evo4g on release day then over to the 3d a few weeks after release. I miss the "cards" other than that I miss nothing
Yea cards were soo cool n conveinant its a shame how things went down one cool thing in the market has that came from webos is the wave launcher which i have on my 3d its nice to have a little piece of webos still

Man, there used to be a launcher called Itching Thumb that was JUST like webos's card system. It's not in the Market anymore, though. I definitely used it on my EVO4G, (can't remember whether it was in a Froyo Rom or not) but does anyone else remember that launcher?
<<It ain't over till the fat guy swings.>>
Cards.
Wave launcher (Now I have that, but it's not the same :/)
Notifications were better.
Preware. -- Android needs an app similar to this, where root users can access mods, patches, and ROMs from one area. Only problem with this is that it's not as easy as it was with WebOS, as WebOS patches/mods were simply edits in the HTML5 based OS.

I also miss these.
Cards could be done with a custom ROM, however, it probably won't and it sounds pretty hard to make. Also, how would you access the cards menu? If it was home, you wouldn't be able to use your home screen anymore.
Notifications - There wasn't really an option to clear notifications unless you clicked on the bar at the bottom and sometimes that took up a lot of screen. I personally think android notifications are better, but an enhanced version of WebOS versions would also be really cool.
Preware - This is one thing I think we strongly need on Android. However, since there are so many devices on android, the mods would have to be device specific. Also, like you said, they would be much harder to make which means there wouldn't be that many mods. Even with these limitations, something like Preware or Cydia would be great for android.

Notifications... Either tapped program or swipe back and they would hide... Especially if app was full screen.
And preware could be done... But each device would need its own feeds...

Exactly why I want webOS on my 3d.... Still loved my pre.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Cards, Preware, Multitasking, the intuitive feel of the OS compared to Android, gestures, the polish of the OS.
People complaining about the apps and everything... I don't understand. I used Preware and had all the apps I needed on that thing. I maybe use 10 apps on my Evo/Evo 3d which is a little less than the amount I used on my Pre.
I loved my Palm Pre but when it broke, still have it..., I went to the HTC Touch Pro. Wow. I regret that decision. Then I held on to that POS until the Evo which was awesome but I still like webOS more than Android. People can make all the arguments they want about webOS not having a lot of apps but that never bothered me. Though, Android is awesome compared to iOS and WP7 (tried them both out and meh).
Never had webOS on a cellphone, so got no idea if its as good as people say it is/was.
Had a Touchpad for close to two weeks, and the only thing I miss, are the cards. Not using them for multitasking (since the Touchpad has pretty poor resolution, so it's hard to see what's going on in each card anyways) but I miss closing apps by just swiping the cards up. It's not a problem on my Evom but on the tablet I have, I really miss an easy way of closing programs.
Honeycomb is bad with that, like ALL the apps you've used the last couple of hours pop up if you click the taskswitcher, and if you use a lot of apps it becomes an unholy mess really fast. Would be nice to be able to close old apps in an easy way like that.
Overall webOS on the Touchpad was pretty awful. I ASSUME it was a lot better on cellphones than on the Touchpad, but it was slooow, and would complain if you had too many windows/cards open.
It was crazy how badly polished/finished that OS was... I mean the Touchpad had pretty good hardware, two dualcore Snapdragon CPUs at 1.2-1.4 Ghz. But it was still slow as molasses, and slower for browsing than my old HTC Desire.
The cards were kinda nice though!

If apple release GNote sized iphone?

I'm going back to iphone.
This thing force closes way too much.... I know rooting and custom ROM can address some of it but I feel iphone is still optimized better than android. OK maybe I don't know but I just never had any issues with their hardware or apps.
Yeah I guess I'm not the type of person who really appreciates customization capability. I realized ONLY thing I like about this particular android is the large screen.
Sorry this is just a bad morning and my android is acting all ****ed up. Happens way too often.
If you are new to Android coming from the iPhone then you'll feel that way for a bit. I did miss my iPhone but once these awesome devs clear up some bugs you'll be really happy....if you like customizing. I couldn't stand iTunes so once I got around the noobness point, Android is so much nicer. The iPhone is more for people that just want to push an icon like my wife and kids.

Most likely a bad device.
I have had mine since mid December...all stock, only updates via Kies.
It's been more stable than 2.2.2 on my Dell Streak.
As for a 5" iPhone, well, Jobs is gone so anything is possible.
You watch though...if Apple comes out with a screen anywhere near the
size of 5", the iphone fanbois will trumpet it out that it is an innovation and
the best thing in the world LOL.
lol you do realize stuff crashes consistantly on the iphone it just doesnt tell you right?
Force Closes are from improperly written apps. this happens, there are so many varients in the Android world it is hard to keep up with the changes.
Apple has a set screen size depending on the device, Android has many different screen sizes.
If you like to DUMB down then go back to the iPhone.

There was actually a study published a few months ago that showed that major iPhone apps actually crash more often than their Android counterparts; however, since the iPhone doesn't display a message to the user when that happens, and it doesn't give the users an option to report the crash, most iPhone users perceive fewer crashes. (In other words, they simply think that they must have hit the Home or Close buttons since all the iPhone does is crash back to their homescreens).
The second theory on why this is the case is that it's much easier and faster to release app updates on Android markets. Android devs can easily roll out responsive updates while iPhone devs have to submit every single update to Apple's ridiculous approval process.

The truth will set you free.
I've been running the I717 since day one and I've gotten exactly 1 FC from a weird app I downloaded. once I deleted it I was good. Try doing a factory reset and start fresh. download apps that have 4 or more stars. My phone has been a champ from day one with all the crap I throw at it (not even screen slowdowns like some are reporting). If you don't like it, you don't like it, there's no harm in that. All I know is my Ipod frustrates me something fierce when I use it so irritations go both ways. Hope you stick around, the stock ICS should be wandering through in the next couple of months. If you don't want to wait, I hear there's awesome Roms of ICS already. check it out.

I am the most unbiased person possible.
I switched from the iPhone back to Android because the screen was annoying for Draw Something, the edges on the phone are somewhat sharp & annoyed me in long typing sessions, no LTE.
What I've experienced on the Note, & why I said when I went back to the iPhone after the EVO3D that I would never go back to Android: LAG.
What good is customization if everything lags. What's the point of customization anyway? It's not like a computer that has incredible battery life & the customization is actually useful. It's just pretty widgets & UI mods.
I'm also shocked at how many ads are in the free apps compared to years ago.
Anyway, I'll go back to my sound app ecosystem with no lag. On top of that, the apps seem to run a lot smoother & take advantage of the A5 dual core vs the dual core in the Note.
+ I've spent way too much $$ on apps for iOS LOL. Sure I could get some for free on Android, but some simply aren't avail. Some I would have to buy again. Unfortunately, they all run better on iOS.
I will miss the s pen functions (and the Sammy cameras always seem better - I am disappointed by the 4S camera), but I'll survive. In my experience with android devices the major culprit for lag is on screen widgets that update. If you set up your device like ios with nothing but apps you will see no lag. If you use widgets and stuff you might redraw.

Interesting observations. Honestly I see my Ipod lag a whole lot more than my note (or even my streak) with much much fewer apps. I mean I use my ipod for pandora, email and rage comics and running all three at once it lags something fierce. I can do all that with my note plus play temple run and not see a stutter. As for the in app adverts, apple is just as bad, but the funnier thing is, the ration of paid vs free apps in IOS is a lot higher in favor of paid apps than in android, which is probably why you see fewer ads in IOS. One thing I noticed with IOS is most apps, especially the free ones, rarely have over 3 stars, makes me wonder if they're really worth the time... All I know is, between IOS and android, I prefer android hands down, I can customize my UI how I want to, I can have widgets if I'd like and do virtually whatever I want with it. if you want I can talk with my buddy to see if he'll trade his 4S strait across for your note.

"1GB ram is more than enough"

My TouchWiz keeps having to redraw itself after exiting from big apps, such as Browser and Facebook. Also, I find that the browser have to reload opened tabs very frequently; sometimes just existing the browser momentarily to reply a facebook message leads to a tab refresh.
Are these signs of insufficient ram or are these problems software related? Any experts care to shed some light on this issue?

More than enough for GB not nearly enough for ICS. 2GB will be just right for an ICS phone with a custom skin. 1GB for the OS itself 512mb for TW and all the background services/ cached apps and 512mb for the user to run his desired apps.
There is a simple rule in computing - more memory (more resources of any kind) never hurt. Yes, people can quote all the articles they want about mobile OS's not needing that much ram, but -
- Android is not nearly as optimized as WP7/iOS
- Android likes to keep more apps open, it was designed to multitask
- over the next 2 years, memory demands will increase. Every version of Android uses more ram
Trust me, you won't see any high end Android phones with less than 1.5GB ram very soon.
I even think Samsung will release 2 Gb ram version of international GS3 in the next six months. They should have done it at the first place and that would have made the phone more future proof.

How would they make money from mobile sales if you didn't "need" to buy their new phone in 6 months?
EVERY phone company would be thinking about their next model months before the latest phone has even hit the shelves.
They give you what you need not what you will need
They should develop 'virtual memory' like in windows and make use of the 16gb,

Same thing is happening to Galaxy S III as well! Not a dealbreaker, but still bothers me a bit. The thing is, I don't remember this happening to my Galaxy S II.
To all of you, open build.prop with a root explorer and change
Code:
dalvik.vm.heapsize=256m
to
Code:
dalvik.vm.heapsize=128m
and all should be good.
Don't forget to reboot afterwards, otherwise the setting won't be applied.
my S2 hang when open game that use feint.. i think i doesn't support so many app to be open frequently.. or maybe i used gb4.03 and used so many flash app
Guys I'm facing the same problem. When I received my new phone, it was working beautifully. During the next 2-3 days, I tired using all the features and apps like drop box, ChatOn, S Voice, Voice cmds and all other frills. Then I downloaded few apps like Ultra Keyboard, SwiftKeyboard Trial, Ex Dialer, Dolphin Browser HD. Done some heavy surfing, downloaded mails and stuff like that and my phone started to lag heavily. TouchWiz started to redraw every time. Then I had a look at the available RAM. First of all it was only 780 out of 1GB and then free was only 23 MB. Then I looked into the list of cached processes and it was a long list. I restarted my phone, disabled most of the apps, downloaded Apex launcher, set the debugging option to limit background processes to 4 and my RAM is normally around 150-200 MB free. But I can see that it is depleting. Also on the Apex launcher, it happened that while returning from my G Talk, then screen went black for almost 5-7 seconds as if the phone froze. But it came out. I re-checked the memory and it was around 158MB. So I don't know why this happened but it is frustrating to have a top notch device and this kind of experience. Any suggestions?

(I only "thanked" you by accident. If I could unthank you twice and leave you at -1 I would)

Multitasking is not s3's cup of tea.

Ok. I am a s3 user for last month. But disappointed on s3 multitasking capabilities. Seriously If u r playing a basic game like angry birds and if u got a call in middle after finishing call the game reload s itself. Wtf. My old lg optimus net with 512mb ram and arv6 800 mhz pro works good at these things. I was able to use uc browser, equilizer app, songs playing in background and also whats app same time on lg op net. But on s3 having quad 1gb ram it sucks. Some times it reloads equilizer app also that hardly takes 2 or 4 mb
I guess because sammy has loaded so much bloatware that leads to 650 or 700 mb ram always in use. What is the use of these specs then????? :banghead:

Yeah, it isn't. They've really messed it up.
There's nothing that we can do about stock, though. Just move on or go for a custom ROM/kernel.

It's not due to the bloatware. It's actually a problem with ICS and jellybean. They just use more ram than the older versions of android. For example, my old galaxy s could multitask amazingly well on froyo 2.2.1 but not as well on gingerbread and worse on cm10. Similarly, your lg optimus was probably on froyo of gingerbread, which inherently use less ram. Even if you disabled all the s3's bloatware, you'd only get a minor increase in multitasking capabilities. In order to multitask well on ICS or jb, you'd need 2gb of ram. Hopefully, android 5.0 will optimise ram usage and make multitasking better on 1gb ram phones.

Hmmm thank u for not bashing me. I thought I might have hurt the ego of sammys fans. But really unrooted and on stock it really suck. No use of quad core and gig of ram. Any other solution than rooting???
Yup my op net is on gingerbread 2.3.4 hope that 5.0 will resolve this issue. How u ppl managing this?? Even while using xda app I just pressed home button to check new sms and in background sonsgs also playing. After replying to sms I tap on xda app and guess what it reloads. I have to find whole way to this thread.

No. Nobody would bash you for this post.
Unless you spam the forum.
I was almost bashed for that yesterday..
LOL
i think some people said MB1 - MB2 Roms has a bit better ram management maybe u can try
and the weird thing my 2 years old GS2 multitask 1000% times better than GS3 ( both on 4.1.2 ) samsung need to fix this **** for their flagship :silly::silly:

I tried 4.2 leak and Samsung improved memory management on it but that leak has it's own share of bugs and I'm back on 4.1 better to wait for new leak or final product.

No, no; I wouldn't bash you for this. The multitasking issue is a big thing and has been present for a long time. For example, look at my review post and look at the list of negatives: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37700176&postcount=9061
Multitasking really, really sucks on the S3! Samsung have done an awful job.
I really hope Google can fix two major things on the next iteration of Android's OS;
1) Better RAM management (which would improve multitasking and load)
2) Giving us cloud storage for game data (it would be a huge help for those people who wipe or switch ROMs)
Hmmm really hoping that sammy will fix this annoying issue asap. I dnt want to root and install custome rom just nw. I can experiment with these things on my old lg. Its on jb cm 10 already but camera not working. But my s3 is new so will use it stock. Also afraid of sds.

Well no doubt multitasking sucks on s3. I guess it's not due to jelly bean. My friend's s2 works great on jelly bean and multitasking is great on it. I guess the problem is on software side of s3. 1gb ram its more than enough for handling phones like s3.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
This has been discussed plenty and you're right, it's one of the s3's biggest flaws. The only obvious solution is the only one you can't really do - add ram. That or, you know, hope samsung takes his head out of his ass and actually fixes this since it's rather shameful, but I won't be holding my breath.
But there are workarounds, even if not perfect:
- you can use a custom aosp based rom. There're plenty to chose from. Although i haven't tried how their memory management is better than stock's many people report it is. And they usually use much less ram too and that also helps. The bad side is, since samsung didn't really deliever on the sources they promissed, any aosp rom for the s3 isn't as optimized as it could be. This translates in worse battery life, somewhat more lag than expected, aparently worse camera (from what i heard) that stock stuff... Some people don't even notice other can't live with that - up to you.
- use swap. by installing a swap-enabled kernel you're able to multitask more. This isn't the same as adding ram although it's probably as close as it gets functionality wise. What you're doing is creating a file on either the internal or the external sd that will help with your poor ram managing.
You can get more info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paging if you're ineterested how stuff works. There's also plenty of info on such kernels on the "original development" thread.
There are prices to be paid though, internal and external sd's are never as fast as ram, so you'll probably feel your phone slower overall, even more if you use the external sd which is known to be even slower than the internal sd (card class is a huge factor here since it determines how fast your card is at reading and writing).
Also, since your phone will be constantly writting/reading from sd you're also reducing it's life span. If your internal sd breaks down, you'll need a new phone since the internal sd can't be replaced. If it's the external sd you can just buy another one cheap.
I did try this with an 8Gb class 6 card and a 512Mb swap. Sure it multitasked like a boss but phone was much slower all around. There are reports from people saying they don't notice any slow downs with a class 10 card though. They're rather cheap so i'll give it a try one day.
- sell it and buy the 9305 with 2Gb of ram. Or wait for the new S4. Or, if you're tired of getting shafted by samsung, go for any other brand. To be honest that xperia Z is looking mighty fine lately...
Super nice info friend. Will try other kernel but not nw. Will wait and watch what sammy is gonna do to fix these in next updates??
So many issues wid this flagship droid. Sudden death, exynos abuse, heating issues........

Well, it sucks how the phone just kills, stops or breaks whatever you leave running either in background or when the screen turns off. And it's plainly annoying to see almost every app getting reopened after a while even if nothing significant happened. Since there's no working multitask I'd rather have what apple does for "multitasking". At least apps are reopened where they were left.
But I'm keeping it for a bit more. I guess I could sell it and get the 9305 for little more money but I'm waiting to see whatever new comes out. If nothing pleases me I can always get the 05 at any point later, probably cheaper too. There's a 4.2 rom from Samsung to the s3 just around the corner, and I'm aware this is wishful thinking but who knows...

Have you checked what the multitasking is like in aosp roms?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
2 pages and all of the mockery and nonsense flying all over the wall... You guys should sell your phone really, you lose couple hundreds dollar more and buy HTC or sth....save the b*tching
Solution: swap, lower the low Memory Killer value (original value is too high to keep app initial load faster, apps like system tuner or minfree manager will help), lock app logic (so that app doesn't get kill almost immediately when you use another app in between of a big app.
Reason why the galaxy s3 is so bad at multitasking is that to ensure users of less lags, less forgotten apps running in the background hogging the ram. Unfortunately android doesn't have a "pause in between" feature, but you chose it so find the d*mn mod and stop whining. I use AOSP and don't even say I defend samsung.... I just hate the nonsense...
Edit: Btw, titanium backup is only 6$ or so, buy it and freeze the crapwares if you don't use. Freeze, not uninstall so the next time you update your custom rom it won't reappear.

Actually, I believe Samsung is working on a resolution.
I was trying out the 4.2.1 stock leaked ROM, and to my surprise found that zRam was enabled (thanks to Yank, check out the discussion over on the "bestmultitaskingfix" thread).

Not sure what is wrong with your phones
Alright, I have read a lot of threads about this issue, but it always amazes me. I am not sure what is up with your phones. I just did a quick test. I opened messaging to a certain message, opened dropbox to my camera uploads, opened xda to this thread, and opened two games (subway surf and hill climb racing). I am able to switch between them with no reloading, fairly quick goes right back to where I was. Checking my ram I am still at 706MB/832MB. After closing it all down I am at 466MB/832MB.
Not sure what I am doing differently. I am running wanamlite v5.5. I have not done anything else special.
I suggest looking a little closer at your phone. What have you done to it and what is taking your memory. Surely there is something(s) you don't really need sucking up your memory.
I know many people report this issue, but I think everyone has a different situation. I don't see how I have no issue and others do, must be some change on the users part that causes/prevents this problem.
