Please recommend me a radio.. - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Lte just started in my area and I'm ansy to get it going.. I am running Baseband version 1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1 Kernel version 2.6.35.14 on cyanogen 7.1.1
Witch radios are the newest I should have and should I flash to get the best quality and lte cause I'm not picking up signal and I don't think this is up to date.. Also when you do this are you flashing two separate radios at once or individually naming then the PG05 IMG in fast boot.. And where would I download these? I tried reading a thread on it but it was too confusing. Thanks for you're advice.

You're on the latest radio already. Some people have better results with older radios as every phone is different. I am currently running the 605.9 radios because I was having data drops with the most recent radios.

Have you tried removing your battery and sim card, placing them back,
and then rebooting? This is what's generally required to reestablish the connection and update your prl, etc...might just help.

I have used that method several time and it works occasionally. I think his problem is more related to using aosp than anything. The most recent radios work pretty well with 7.2 I think that 7.1.1 just has that issue no matter what though.

No 3g just 1x

Every area I go where I know I used to have strong 3g, now my phone only ever says 1x and data speed matches. I'm running team XRON rc1. Anyone know why my 3g is gone? And/or know how i can fix it?
Any help is appreciated.

Stock rom doesn't show 1x. Ever. Custom roms do.
I realize that.. but I know I actually was on 3g before and now I am not. This isn't my first phone/custom rom.

I believe it is a mod done in the SystemUI.apk. Look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1208898
Edit** Maybe a kernel issue? I remember having the same issue on my EVO 4G with downloading roms and/or radios. What radio are you using?

Just the stock one I assume, unless the rom flashed something different. I'll have to flash another rom to see if it fixes it. I have seen the systemui edits that have borked 3g but I've ruled that out in my case.

The latest CDMA radio is 0.97.10.0530. Look in Baseband version is Settings and see what you have. If you have the older one, you can find the latest here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192661
I haven't seen any roms that include the radio. You usually have to manually update that yourself...

[Q] No Service after Flashing ROM

My Thunderbolt is rooted, but no matter what ROM I flash i can't get service. This happened after installing CM7. I have tried flashing different ROMs, updating radios, and returning to stock. But no dice. I can get the phone into HBOOT and Recovery, and the phone will boot, but when it says to select language, and then goes to the Activation screen, it just says "Activating..." and does nothing else. Any ideas, or a fix would be very helpful! Thanks!
EDIT: Problem was fixed by flashing most recent Radio. When i flashed CM7 for some reason it deleted my radio files.. hmm
Sounds like something mighta broke after flashing. I'd flash 605.9 and give big red a call. I know not much help, but sounds like you tried everything else. Good luck
I know you said different Roms, but you try a sense ROM?
i know its basic but you have the backplate attached right its needed to get signal
Sent from my HTC ThunderBolt using xda premium
Lol yes backplate is on. I just checked "about phone" and it says "baseband unknown" I think I have the wrong radio. I am going to search for the MR1 radio and install. I am running CM7, any idea on most recent radio?

[important note] ICS LEAK FIRMWARE ZIP and DOWNGRADING

This is kind of related to development, and still really important since those flashing Leak ROMs might not read the General section and not know if I posted this there. That is why I posted this here.
If you flashed any PG86IMG firmware zip for the Virgin Mobile leaks, you might not be able to go back.
EDIT: CHADS DOWNGRADE THREAD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641461
NOTE: This is not specific to freeza's zip. Any firmware zip for the leaks is the same.
Why?
The leak firmware has a file, dzdata_4g.hdr, which no other official firmware has.
The only similar thing other leaks have is dzdata.img which has confirmed not working since people flashing 2.17 ruu (which has this) are still showing the Virgin Mobile banner and having problems.
Downgrading will leave you with the Virgin Mobile dzdata_4g.hdr.
TL;DR/easier to digest
Leak has dzdata_4g.hdr
No official firmware RUU does
Downgrading leaves you stuck with dzdata_4g
What is bad about keeping the Firmware
If you have flashed the zip or have tried downgrading from it, you might be one of the few that have problems with:
-No 3G, just 1X
-No VPN
-More bugs
And everyone will be stuck with the "Virgin Mobile" banner.
Also you're flashing radios and firmware from an unnoficial firmware for a different device. This can cause a lot of issues.
If you aren't having problems and you flashed it, good for you.. Some do but most don't..
EDIT: We're marked as Virgin Mobile so we'll be at the bottom of the tower priority.. among other things..
Can I still flash the firmware zip minus dzdata_4g.hdr?
Try it and report back. It might brick or phone or cause random reboots with the ROM.
Is there a fix if I already flashed it?
See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641461
Summary:
The point of this warning is that if you flash the leaked firmware, there is a chance of you having problems. This chance is pretty high since I'd say like 1/10 of people have no 3G and signal quality for a lot of people got poorer.
If you get these problems, there's no going back. There's no way of fixing them.
Whether it's worth taking the risk or not is up to you.
Edit: This kind of explains the situation were in right now:
HTCFlyerX said:
BTW....if anyone can confirm that they can roam on data after flashing the VM firmware please let us know! I believe data roaming may not work any longer.
And to explain why I don't believe the Sprint ICS leak....very simply....all the rcdata.imgs from our ruus contain the same exact thing....the partition (RCData) is the Radio-Cust.(om?)er?) Data partition and holds pri information and roaming data!
So quite simply....we flashed a file that was built for a different carrier and are now marked as that carrier in different areas of the network.....this WILL conflict with other things as more of us use our devices at different levels!
ADDED AFTER..... Chad has just confirmed with Qualcomm that we have messed up our devices PRI! There is no way to revert from the VIRGIN MOBILE PRI!
The ICS leak may be our fix as it could contain a updated PRI that would be accepted by our devices partition!

I flashed it and went a few places and had what I think is extremely poor signal, but every time I checked my wifes phone's signal (stock Epic 4G) it is the same. Maybe just coincidence?

4G still works with the firmware, I never said anything was wrong with 4G. So does hotspot.
Go to settings, about phone, network and tell me what it says for your network operator.
Also you did flash the firmware right? or did you flash the roms without firmware?

Only some are actually having problems, but the point is, if you flash Freeza's firmware there is a chance of you having problems. If you have problems, theres no way of fixing them.
Also the chance is pretty high as many users have been reporting of no 3G, VPN, etc.
With the virgin mobile banner am I no longer in the Sprint database or is it just cosmetic/visual that can be edited with eri.xml ???

I flashed Freeza's ics firmware but my banner never changed to virgin mobile even though it seemed to work since voicemail didn't work. I was able to run 1.13 RUU and it seemed like everything was back to normal.
I also haven't had an issues with any rom.

[Q] Radio Question

I'm having terrible 4g issues. i got a replacement thunderbolt a little while back and flashed eternity which im not too happy with on there. but i never flashed a new rom because i was told that the new radios on the most current hardware would supprt it. sure enough it did but the 4g doesnt work like its supposed to. just goes in and out and stuff
since i'm not too good with radios i need to know which one would be the best to flash. and why if someone doesnt mind explaining it to me. thanks!

Are you currently running the most updated 605.19 stock radios?
You ARE if you go to settings, about phone, software information, more, and the baseband version reads 1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
If these are not the numbers you see, flash these radios from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24992678
If these are the numbers you see, then it should be working properly. If not, you may have installed an older version of Eternity. Check to make sure you flashed the most updated one.
Or the 4G in your area may be simply going in and out. Try flashing another ROM to verify this.

I'm pretty sure the LTE radios they used were from the 2.11.605.19 OTA. They may have flashed a different CDMA radio, but Idk. The leaked LTE radio causes most phones to reboot a lot.
Here's a link to the combo radios though. I suppose it never hurts to try them out... the outcome varies by phone.

But it is still recommended to use the 2.11.605.19 radios... which I posted a link for them above.

I've even had luck with the old 2.11.605.9 radios.
Try them if you'd like.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396408
Just be careful flashing different radios. If you flash a bad radio, it can brick you.
Also, I was always told to never flash the same radio that is already installed. So if you flash the .9 radios and they are currently installed, don't flash them again until you flashed a different radio.

Want reliability and stability

My rezound has gotten unacceptably flaky over the past few months, dropping data at work, which is right next to a cell tower that fills all my bars. I also get lots of force closes in a wide range of apps, including system apps. I've tried about 4 different roms to no avail. I think the problem is kernel, radio, or hardware. What combination of Rom, kernel, and radio would you recommend for max reliability? Links would be appreciated.
I'm s-off and rooted, by the way.
Thanks!

I suggest just sticking to the radio & kernel that comes with the rom. If your phone is still unstable run a ruu then flash a rom.

Point of clarification, no ROM includes the radios as it would be highly irresponsible for a ROM dev to do so.
My recommendation follows the other posters though. Run the global firmware RUU, my suggestion would be to run FULL RUU and not just picking and choosing radios with firmware.
Most stable setup I have found is using global firmware and running Nils business ICS Sense 3.6. Everything works perfectly. Battery life is great. And I'm pretty sure nils just updated the ROM last week. I also just run the kernel that came with the ROM. Rock solid stable

EVERY rom out there without pin-pointing has their shares of bugs. I've tried every rom and always find a bug that annoyed me.
I *finally* installed the stock RUU. It's more reliable than it was, but I'm still getting occasional FCs, and it sometimes drops back to 3G and even 1X, even when I'm sitting on the other side of a parking lot from the cell tower.
I couldn't figure out how to get back into recovery, so I reinstalled amon ra and Su.
All I really miss now from custom roms are google now and wireless tether. I've tried a few wireless tether apps from the play store. My CR-48 sees the SSID, but can't connect, even if I shut off WiFi encryption. Any ideas? I'm about ready to go back to custom roms.

And I got wireless tether working. I'm not sure exactly which change I made fixed it, but I think it was enabling the alternate routing method.
