[Q] Has anyone been able to access ADB through CWM? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I'm using the AT&T version, but this might apply to all.
I'm trying to access ADB through CWM but can't seem to. I've tried to find the actual driver, but no luck. When the GSIII is booted adb works, but the moment I boot into recovery, it can't find the proper driver. I did download the newest drivers through the SDK as well as from Samsung's site, but no luck so far.
I know it's a driver issue, because the Sprint version had the same issue, but you have to manually install the driver. The problem is, the driver doesn't show up on my machine no matter how much I try to find it. Tips? Tricks? Any success?

I think I saw somewhere mentioned that you may want to try either PDANet drivers or the ones for Galaxy Nexus (they had similar issues seeing CWM with ADB). Or you may want to check these out, but not sure if they are compatible with the SGS 3 yet -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379875

The drivers above worked for me
I was stook in a bootloop and needed to get a rom on my internal, thus needed adb. THose drivers above worked for the meantime. Windows just thought it was a galaxy nexus.

So far it appears those drivers in the link you attached are what is needed. Looks like we need to pass this on to dev. Thanks

[How To] Root SGP 4.0 YP-G1 (us)

This thread was created to verify and promote the SuperOneClick rooting method that worked for me. I purchased a YP-G1 SGP 4.0 from Amazon recently and found enough hints on what to try for gaining ROOT.
All credit for this method goes to CLShortFuse and his SuperOneClick process.
There may be other steps to get this running, but below is what I did and it worked.
1. Enable USB Debugging.
2. Connect YP-G1 to PC, mount storage.
3. Locate Samsung Kies install on phone storage, install Samsung Kies.
4. Reboot after install.
5. Open Kies, run the update. (Kies never successfully connected to the YP-G1. I believe this was just to get drivers installed.)
6. Extract SuperOneClick to a folder on your PC's HD. (I chose a folder with no spaces in the name. Not sure if it matters.)
7. Unmount storage from the phone's notification bar.
8. Launch SuperOneClick.exe.
9. Click ROOT on SuperOneClick application on the PC.
10. Sit back and wait. It takes quite a while with mandatory 40s pauses.
This method may include steps that are not actually needed, but it is what I did and rooting the YP-G1 was successful. I will try to update the steps if I found a way to take out a few steps.
User etrnldrk reported that the update to Kies was not necessarily.
You don't need to update Kies to get this to work. The drivers installed just fine for me with the version included on my player.

Did you read the thread? It's normal that your antivirus will detect virus because many anti-virus detect exploit as virus but it's a false alarm.

Good to hear this method was attempted on a 5" player. I really like this device and since I bought it for my Niece as a Christmas present, I might pick up the 5" for myself.
I've not had to process root again on the device, so I don't have much to update yet. Sounds like the Kies Update step was not needed, so thanks for reporting that.

Yeah, Pretty sure that's what they mean.

But am sorely tempted to do so..
However, I have no windows OS on any of my machines,
So what's the best route for someone on a Linux machine, with no access to windohs?
Really don't want to have to use an emulator to run a .exe file. lol
I used SuperOneClick on my UK 5.0 and it worked fine to obtain root.
I also said yes to installing busybox permanently, which was perhaps a mistake as it segfaults when I try to run it.
I believe this is because the /system partition didn't have sufficient space for the binary (it had ~650kb space remaining when mounted rw after the su binary was installed), so it has been truncated (and hence doesn't run well )
This leads to a problem when trying to install busybox from anywhere else too, and to solve this I had to grab a static busybox binary (from Debian iirc) place it in /data and create a symlink to /system/xbin/busybox (need to remount the partition rw temporarily). I didn't bother to create the symlinks, but probably should do.

Followed the directions & tried several times using XP and W7 machines. Both get stuck at "Running psneuter..." (See below). Anyone else have this problem?
I tried w/ Debugging on and off. Also tried mounted and unmounted. Failed.
I tried closing GO launcher (which I read on another thread), and running stock. Failed.
I tried 3 different versions of KIES (Kies_2.0.0.11034_5, Kies_2.0.0.11033_25 & Kies_2.1.1.11124_17_6). Failed.
Any ideas?

I was in the same boat as you. I love Linux, and hate Windows. But, I needed to root my device. Try this. It worked for my 5.0, and believe it should work for the 4.0. It uses the same zergRush exploit as Super One Click does. It's built on the same stuff as doomlord's root, too.

Does anyone know if this works for Android 2.3.6 on the US Player 4.0? I've been looking everywhere and can't find anything for 2.3.6 (which apparently patches the zergRush exploit).

Flash either a custom rom or a custom kernel and then it is supposed to work.
The OP should be updated to reflect that the root won't work on 2.3.6 until a custom rom/kernel is installed.

Which custom rom or kernel? I've been trying to figure out how to get started rooting my US 4.0 player with 2.3.6 and it's proving incredibly confusing. Is there anywhere that lists a step by step process?? I know I need to unlock the bootloader - can't find any specific info on that for my particular player. I know I need to flash a ROM or Kernel, but can't find specific info on which one works for 2.3.6 for the YP-G1. I just can't seem to find any real useful info on how to proceed - could anyone throw me a bone?

First, you don't have to unlock any bootloader period. As far as the custom kernel goes, the only one that works well is TerraSilent. Because mostly everybody already switched up to a custom rom, GB was pretty much left up. I would recommend that you update your device when you'll have flashed a custom kernel or rooted your device.

[Q] Root and custom ROM without PC connection (Gingerbread 2.3.3)

Hello, I just got a Samsung Galaxy S2 from a friend (Stock firmware GB 2.3.3)
For some reason I am not able to establish a connection between the phone and the PC.
I tried to install and reinstall Kies and/or the drivers multiple times (and everyone of the other suggestions i found with google) but with no success. The phone recognizes that it's been charged when the cable is plugged in and sometimes the phone even indicates that it's establishing a connection to kies (but this appears randomly, not always). On the PC there's no sign of any connection to the phone, neither Kies connects to it nor the phone is shown as any kind of device in the device-manager or in explorer ("adb devices" and Odin also don't recognize the phone).
Since my fathers S2 (2.3.6 Stock Firmware) connects fine with the same drivers and cable i finally gave up searching for any any other possible reason than a damaged connector on the phone.
So i tried to search for ways to root the phone, put CWM on it and a custom ROM without any PC connection.
I encountered some things like signed custom kernels that should grant you root access, an exploitation, ...
The exploitation didn't work out for my phone, and the kernels I've found are for Jellybean or ICS, so not suitable for my Gingerbread-Firmware,
I've found some older threads on various websites that promised such kernels for Gingerbread, but there were either dead links or nothing suitable for my phone.
So now I'd like to ask the community if anyone knows any signed kernel to gain root access for my phone, or any other way to accomplish my task of upgrading to a custom firmware, or if there's no possible way to do this and I should stop wasting m time on this...
(btw, for some reason the update of the firmware via WiFi doesn't work either, so I would be glad if anyone just knows a way to upgrade to a newer stock-firmware)
My phone:
model: GT-I9100
Android: 2.3.3
Baseband: I9100NEKD5
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE1-CL181974
Buildnr.: GINGERBREAD.XWKE1
thank you all in advance
Can you download and install the latest version of Odin and check if it recognises that your phone is connected?
Let me know

You can try ExynosAbuse ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297) for rooting; not sure if it works for gingerbread though.
Once you're rooted you should be able to flash cwm with MobileOdinPro (costs 5 bucks; https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro)

Try these:
Boot to recovery and factory reset (backup any pics etc if required)
Set debugging in usb access
Try other usb ports on the pc.
I wanted the same thing untill it took me 2 weeks to decide I wanted to flash in odin. Swapping to a different port gave me access.
Good luck.

This is what I tried too and for me it didn't work. I got the same problem as TO. I'm going to try some more stuff and if it would work i'll let you know and will follow this.
ps. I even have switched the board inside with the micro usb connector. Didn't work. I am on 4.0.4.
I already tried if Odin recognizes my phone -> no success...
I also tried ExynosAbuse before, it tells me when I start the app made by chainfire, that my device is unable to be rooted via this method.
And I've already tried to connect through every single port on every single computer that's available to me, still no success...
The only chance a can see right now might be to find a signed kernel that gives me root-access via the "install update from SD card" function, I've already found a few, but none of them was suitable for my device...
The problem is that this firmware apparently is that "old", that most of the results when searching for this topic are JB or ICS-related.

You really gotta get your device rooted and flashed (mobile odin pro might is a good choice)
Don't you have an External SD card? if not, I'm sure you know someone who does.
Once you get it, you can get your device rooted & flash whatever you want via recovery.
And remember, you can always say to your dad "hey old man, how about this: I give you my phone, and you give me yours".

Yes, I do have an external SD card, but as far as I know, to flash your phone via MobileOdin it needs root access, and I still haven't figured out how to grant my applications root access on this device without any PC connection... I haven't found any useable kernel/update yet that helps me with my problem and can be installed without the phone being rooted already... If you know one, I would be glad if you could tell me
I already tried to negotiate with my dad but he doesnt seem very cooperative. He didn't like the fact that my phone has an older firmware than his and that I haven't found a way to update it... (Somehow the firmware-update via WiFi doesn't work too, it tells me everytime that the phone failed to connect to the server)

lol, okay, stop and read for a min.
You can root your device with that SD card.
Read this guy's method.
After you root it, you're up for some flashing.
But take it one step at the time.
If we get you to flash a nice looking ROM, your dad's gonna say something like this "hey, that's a nice looking OS you got there, how about I give you mine + 100 bucks"
About the OTA (over the air) update, I recall reading something about it. I'ma see if I can find a thread about that.
Also, you might like to try removing kies from your system (every last trace of it) and reinstalling the latest version. Then try connecting the phone again.

Quantity rather than quality lol.
Yes, this method doesn't work on GB, I've tried this before with a huge load of different CWM-bootloaders from a lot of different sources and it always throws an "signature verification failed" or "failed to verify whole-file signature" error or both...
Isn't there any similar way to do this on GB? I've been an iPhone user for a few years now and didn't check the android hacking/modding community very often and because of this I'm not aware of any rooting methods that may have been available back then...
All you need to do is use the exynos exploit to gain root. You can do this via a simple apk.
Once you have root install Mobile Odin and flash Siyah kernel (.tar) to get custom kernel, cwm recovery etc.
Then you're off! Just reboot into recovery and wipe/flash away :good:

Unfortunately the ExynosAbuse-method isn't an option for me neither...
EDIT:
found this in the changelog of ExynosAbuse (added in v1.20):
- Gingerbread-related fixes - note that not all Gingerbread firmwares of affected devices are vulnerable (for example, I know several SGS2 GB firmwares are not exploitable)
I think that unfortunately I have one of those firmwares...
What about changing the usb board.
If nothing else works this will be my last option in the end i guess, but I'd rather prefer a software-based solution because I assume it might be a bit cheaper
Looks like your only option to me.
try this
open the phone dialer
enter *#7284#
then make sure your phone is set to usb mode
you can try switching it to modem or the other option then reboot phone
then enter code again and pick usb option
you might need to reboot again
I had a problem in the past where USB would not connect and when I did the above it worked.

You, Sir, are my personal hero from now on I couldn't really try by now if this solved the problem with the USB-connection, but somehow it solved the problem with the firmware-update per WiFi, and now I was able to update to the newest ICS-firmware available to my device. And hopefully I will be able to root it now with one of the signed kernels available for ICS-firmware

Unofficially installing CM - Need help?

Hi!
I am installing CM from my phone's sd card, because my laptop never show the connectivity of my phone. Maybe a cable issue, but I don't know why. Someone told me that you can not connect GT-I8552 via USB cable.
OK! I have rooted my phone, and busybox is installed. I have downloaded CM v11 for Samsung Galaxy Premier, as this was the phone having configuration closer to my phone.
So, I installed ROM Installer, and it asked me to locate the zip file on sdcard. I did that, and finally clicked the install button, and that displayed a message for reboot in recovery mode. I clicked OK! My phone rebooted, and a screen came with the logo of android. Now, there were some option like wipe all data, reboot. Installed from SD card. I choose SD card and but it says no file here.
Although it displayed me a message on the main recovery screen that Multi CSC successful.
What could be the problem here, any idea?
I'm assuming that you rooted your phone using the CWM method.
The first problem is that you should install it directly through CWM (recovery), these programs like the one you used don't work very well with your device. I don't trust them, but this is my opinion.
The second problem is that you are trying to install CM of another phone. You shouldn't do this. Seriously. Unless you are willing to get a nice paperweight to use at office...

Hi!
Thanks for the response. Well, yeah! I guess there is only one fine-working ROM for GT-I8552, and that is by Bionic Monkey. So I guess I will install that. But I have a USB cable connectivity issue. My laptop never show the connectivity of cell phone. Do you have any idea about that?
Does you system has "samsung usb drivers" if not please install it and then try to connect it.
Here is the link: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOB...es-15270.shtml
or you can install kies
Here is the link : http://www.samsung.com/in/support/us...tware/KIES/JSP
if this not the issue, then may be it's due to corrupted rom or drivers, try same as above uninstall drivers and kies and re-install them, if not worked may be issue with rom.

Congratulations : Welcome to 4.4.2 with ROOT

For the last two years I have been going back and forth between my Note 2 that was Stock Rooted on 4.1.2 and my un-Rooted Note 2 fully stock on 4.4.2. Each had their advantages
I had all but given up
Now thanks to GhettoRoot I have the best of both worlds.:highfive:
I would like to hear what is COOL about having Root on 4.4.2.
You newbies to 4.4.2 check out the Active apps widget . it only takes up one space on the home screen. It is a must have.
Because of GhettoRoot XDA will need to redo Most of the Verizon Note 2 Forum. AdamOutler's Root is obsolete, Thanks for the good times Adam

Adam has done A LOT for this community especially for Samsung phone in general.. His work is NOT obsolete and he still very involved on this forum. I am not friends with him or do I know him but he was the master mind behind unlocking/exploiting Verizons bootloader.. which currently on 4.3 and 4.4.3 is still not possible. This is most likely do to him not having the phone and the phones age..
SOo I hope I got the wrong impression from your statement.. Bc that man you mentioned.. Is a LEGEND.. Hands down

I used it to replace the APN config file in my wife's phone for use on other carriers (T-Mobile & international use):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57070787&postcount=7
It worked great for up to HSDPA+ speeds, but no LTE.. ..then she left the phone on top of her car; it fell off in traffic and got run over.. maybe this will help someone else!
Before it got smashed, I had planned on trying the following thread out next (for the VZW Note 3) to see if I could get LTE working on T-Mobile:

I followed travis's post and mine is rooted now with superuser access.
My only question now is what method do we use to install twrp or cwm on this nd7 rooted note 2 with 4.4.2?
Can we use odin and just flash the latest twrp or is there another workaround?

In order to install a custom recovery, you have to have an unlocked bootloader. At this moment, there is no do it yourself method to unlock the bootloader on factory stock 4.4.2, so you can't install CWM/PHILZ or TWRP. For about $75 I think... you can send your phone off to a company that uses special equipment to downgrade your phone to 4.1.2... then you would be able to unlock the bootloader.... Otherwise, the most you can do right now is root the device and make modifications that don't require unlocked bootloader (e.g. debloat, install Xposed modules, etc...). An XDA user named Beastmode is working on trying to get a modified version of TWRP called Safestrap working for 4.4.2 which wouldn't require an unlocked bootloader, so you may want to keep an eye on that thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=57190369
Thanks for the reply. I figured that was the case. I had 4.1.2 a few days ago also and figured "hey, i haven't updated in over a year" and didn't read into it enough and then upgraded to stock ota 4.4.2 so that sucks. I guess I can live with it like this for now till a fix comes out if one does.
also having trouble
I also have been having trouble rooting my note2 with 4.4.2. I followed travis' approach and I got the 6 device not found errors. Am I not installing the correct drivers? Any help or information is greatly appreciated.
UPDATE: Just got it to work. Will post soon what I was doing wrong and what I did to correct it.
I was able to get GhettoRoot to find my device once and the install failed. Now no matter what I do including removing and adding drivers it says it cannot see your Android device. Is there a trick i'm missing?

for me a message came up on my phone asking for permission and then i was able to root after installing the drivers.
I just had to accept on my phone first for it to actually work.

The part you are talking about does not come up until after the command prompt finds your device. Then you get the message to accept. That message came up the very first time but now it will not find the device for me to get to that part.

I had similar issues with some of my trials.. ...try turning developer mode off and on, plug in and then give the phone 30-90 seconds or so for installer mode to time out and verify the device is in MTP or PTP mode.
Just rooted my Note 2 running 4.4.2
Ok gang, so after about a week of trying every method to root my phone I finally got it to work. I'm going to tell you what I was doing wrong and what you can check to see where you are messing up. Hope this helps someone.
The issue I kept running into was that my device could not be found. I would run Ghettoroot and it would just tell me error device not found. This made no sense because I could get Kies to work and the bubble in the lower right corner that says installing device drivers would always succeed. However if I went into Device Manager (on the computer) there was a little yellow exclamation point next to my device. After looking in to the properties it said there were no drivers installed.
Also if you open a command prompt and type "adb devices" (with your phone plugged in) it should show you your device, if nothing comes up then the drivers are not properly installed.
So... First check that drivers are properly installed in your Device Manager (again this is on your computer), and then open a cmd window and type adb devices to see if your phone shows up. If it does then you are ready to use Ghettoroot.
I used this Ghettoroot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55210343&postcount=27
and the drivers I used were called:
SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.45.0 (I can't remember where I DLed it from, sorry)
Also, if you are interested. My method for figuring out what was wrong started by right clicking on the GhettoRoot .bat file to see the sequence cmd commands. They began with adb commands and I then googled to see how to check that the command would work. That is when I stumbled on the comman "adb devices" to make sure my phone was properly connected.
I hope this helps someone and if I can help in any other way just ask!

I've only had this phone a week. My vs980 fractured :crying: now I'm stuck with this "thing" which I've done nothing with as I'm still trying to figure out WHAT never mind how. There's so much bloat I'm thinking AOSP. But how?
So far, ghetto-root hasn't worked for me but have removed Kaspersky etc to see if that was the problem. Then worry abt boot loader. Am on Pageplus Carrier so there wont be any OTA updates
Is there any merrit in the "Heimdahl" (??) method shown here CYANOGENMOD
I've read some of people using Odin to load pre-rooted stock image (and have found the images... but... )
I bricked the vs980 playing too fast and not waiting for answers. (learned a thing or 2 unbricking it)
So am I correct in understanding that you can no longer "Drop" an Un****** version of the factory image into the phone? By any means?
THANKS

ADB doesn't see Android 4.4.2 on Windows 8.1

Hi,
I followed your instructions, but my God damned Windows 8.1 doesn't see my God damned Android 4.4.2, so I "adb devices" command -- pc doesn't see my Android. "file transfer (MTP) files" command is useless.
Is there any of you in the whole wide world could help me?
My phone is in recovery mode can't boot stuck in boot loop.
Nobody answeres. This is said to be the best geeks' forum.
Sorry, I am disappointed, fed up, etc. as none of you give a damn about my f***ing problem.
Thx if any...
You could try using the latest adb and some universal driver ***,
but not much use from ADB really, if it has a stock recovery Then also
making update zip s could be problematic... signing...
Best to try contacting the manufacturer or seller, what ever, and try to get the firmware + tools.

If no luck, try to find out its soc. You could even try to open the damn thing...
Or just assume it's a MTK. If so -> MTK drivers, DroidTool, Wwr, SP_FlashTool, etc..
and make a backup. Worked ok? Good! Now find someone having the same piece of...
and ask her to do the same and share his system...
Good luck! :fingers-crossed::good:
*** For example this installer of mine. Contains universal adb driver and adb/fastboot downloader

SP_Flashtool should do the trick. You probably
can use the scatter file from that rom dump.

Though you should be able to fix that damn thing now...
:victory:
Thank you so much for making such a hard effort to help me! ?
I'll do my best and will keep you informed.
Partitions "nvram" and in in my case also "pro_info" are important backups.
Nvram contains IMEI values etc... anyway it can be important to save it/them.
And pro_info might have some extra values defined in it. At least if the device
has some faked firmware showing wrong hardware values like in my case.
Then there might be some real values needed, defined there along with the faked ones...
I'm no MTK expert but managed to fix my tablet by restoring those partitions...
Ehh!
I've read all the info you linked. ????
OMG!
Well, I guess that I should download the rom.
After that do I have to do all the instructions?
How will my pc be able to see my phone?
I need no data backup.
I swear I got in touch with the store in which I bought the data cable and asked if it is really a data cable and not just a charging one.
I can do anything I just need to know the steps to be taken one by one.
There is no way to see the system files on my dead phone to be able to delete the rest files of SELinuxModeChanger?
Thanks for your kind reply in advance!

1. I can relate your "shock". That Wwr route isn't the easiest one, I can imagine.
Haven't done it myself. Maybe that SP_FlashTool + scatter file is enough for
the backup. If you have those IMEI numbers saved you probably can skip
the backup, but as I said I'm no expert, so you might want to do some
Googling before deciding anything...
2. Install the MTK drivers (search). any tool will need them too.
3. IDK. Maybe someone else has an answer to this?
Checked. The stock recovery doesn't use test keys, so making update zip is not possible.

Checked SELinuxModeChanger's info - and its source code too.
It shouldn't do any writing that factory reset wouldn't remove.

Easiest would be that the vendor would give you a full OTA/recovery update zip package.
(Not such that just patches the old one. ) That most likely would fix it.

Yep. Thanks.
Well, actually the antivirus Zemana asked if I wanted to make SELinuxModeChanger a part of the system/a system file. I agreed. I made the wrong decision. I used ES File Manager to delete SELinuxModeChanger. Well, I succeeded in half... but failed to delete it from all system maps and couldn't reinstall it again. Rebooted... The rest is history...
I guess phone thinks that it has a corrupted system and that's why it doesn't boot.
Navon... They never ever update. No system security patches ever.
Actually, 1 yr ago I had a problem nobody was able to help. I was advised to take my phone to Navon asking for refurbishing. I had no money and I wanted to fix the problem myself anyway. It took a year, but I found out how to fix it. ES File Manager was the key.

While you're are letting go, you could read some stuff linked below. Good
instructions. What to do and what not to do. (Unlike at that "getdroidtips"
site I linked earlier. Some of the tips and articles there are total rubbish.
Mixed stuff copied somewhere else, I guess. Some might work, but not all.
Also they use wrong words in article names to get better Google rankings.)
SP Flash Tool + MediaTek MT65xx drivers download and installation guide including bricked devices
Download MTK Drivers (32 & 64 bit) XP Vista Win7 Win8
Windows 10 MTK VCOM USB Drivers for 32 & 64 bit + Drivers installation tutorial (Might be useful with win8 too.)
Download SP Flash Tool v3 & v5 – Latest versions ( Tip: read to the end)
Remove, Disable & Uninstall MTK USB Drivers and inactive COM Ports – USBDeview (if having driver problems)
(And I also sent you some info in Hungarian already in the previous post. Backup etc.)
Again. just for fun sake, I tried again if my MTK tablet/phone would be recognized by SP flash tool.
No luck. Previously it wasn't a problem. Still, the adb/fastboot works okay.
So, some problem with MTK drivers. I have used SP_Flashtool, BeTools,, even older ones
like WiseLinkTool. And maybe some that were between those two.
Well, I don't have any good reason to fix those driver problems at the moment,
everything works ok, but still it kind of sucks.
Anyway adb/fastboot works okay. And that is the problem mentioned originally in the title.
So, does the fastboot work?
With fastboot, if it works, you might be able to boot some modified recovery without flashing and then maybe do some backups etc.
My adb driver package, mentioned in my signature has some options to remove the
old adb installations and the old (maybe problematic) values from the registry...
USBDeview is better choice in some situations though...
