4.0.4 & mnt/emmc - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Wondering if anyone has sorted the issue with mnt/emmc to change it back to show as external SD like the sammy roms ?
i mean out the box, no mods or bindings, didn't know if someone figured it out as it's one of those things that bugs me

It's not a bug or issue, it's by design.

We realise that, but why??????????
I have several apps that rely on data folders of many gb that I store on my external_sd. Some will work when I transfer the files onto the phones memory, others wont because the directories have to be set when they are first initialised and emmc isnt an option. A couple work for a while but as soon as an update has to be downloaded for the data they fail because, again, emmc isnt an option within the app.
Its a major pain in the ass! made all the more frustrating because CM9 runs so nicely apart from this on my phone.

use ics sd binder from playstore

it is frustrating, samsung can sort it but no one else can, and i doubt they will do a 4.0.4 or 4.1 release officially for the S2 now.
i have been holding back for weeks expecting someone to figure out how to do it so its the same as the samsung rom.
obviously i was expecting a little to much.

did u try ics sd binder from playstore

no not yet, still on the stock ics rom as i am trying to decide what roms going to be best for me.
RR still has the camera bug and way to many others to list, it seems to go backwards! you cant update a lot of apps.
paranoidandroid seems a good choice, not that i care for tablet mode but i get the impression its quite stable.
after my last run in with RR and the sd card issues i went back to stock but now i need a rom that wont soft reboot when streaming to my new car stereo

ICS Leak--how do you guys like it?

With the i717 ICS leak yesterday, I figured someone would have already posted this question.
I am on the fence on if I should apply it on my stock phone. Is it faster/smoother/stable?
If you have the AT&T leak from yesterday, if you wouldn't mind sharing your opinion on your device. I read someone was going back to GB and was trying to figure out why you would do that at all.
its not a terrible release at all. its mostly stable. there are some quirks in it but nothing earth shattering. if you have a stock note then id say go with ics.
i myself am planning on going back to GB. i want to wait until theres more development with ICS before i reflash again. i miss saurom.

I'm using the leaked stock ICS leak & it's awesome. I did have to remove all the AT&T bloatware with TiBU or settings > apps to un-install. I get a little lag when trying to scroll fast in settings > apps & in TiBu but besides that, it has been very stable for me. The only issue I had was with VVM but figured it out with the help of a forum poster.
You could always use DAG (creator of Saurom) modified stock ICS leak version. I'm using this as a daily driver & left GB behind in the past.
Its fun but...
Some apps keep crashing...right now I can't get google play to even load
Edit-Fixed problem by restoring backed up version of play store....just switched from iOS and still learning to problem solve I guess.
Thanks all.
So it appears to be pretty good if you treat it like a fresh install and not an upgrade. My gut tells me that the over the air update from AT&T is going to likely be the same for all intents and purposes.
So I did it yesterday and found out that you have no choice BUT to wipe the phone clean. I didn't know applying the update would annihilate everything. Oh well...it's cool and most things are in the cloud (with the exception of saved games).

I did a total wipe, but all of my pics were still there when the dust settled. I find this odd because when I returned my first Note to AT&T the Factory Data Reset didn't wipe them either.
But, I am not going back to GingerBread until the official ICS is released.
Any bell/telus notes on ics yet? If so hows it workin??!

Why would you go back to Gingerbread?
Also, yeah--I noticed that it doesn't touch the SD card at all (so all my documents and pictures were still on the SD card when my phone was running GB). This time around, I just backed up the contents of the SD card onto the external one.

I would go back to GingBread to get the official AT&T Rom via OTA. Unless I happen to find a Rom that offers a truer ICS experience.

truer ICS?
You mean with no Touch Wiz? I wouldn't mind that either, but I have to say Touch Wiz is WAY better on ICS than it is on GB.

Yeah, I would like as close to stock ICS as possible. I don't mind touchwiz at all really.
DAGr8's rom is super smooth for me.
Been using Apex Launcher and I like the look and options paired up with ICS but the launcher lag when returning to the home screen after a few minutes is annoying.
I'm liking it a lot. GB worked fine, but I prefer the ICS interface, it's a lot cleaner.
As some have mentioned, using 3rd party launchers have created a little lag, but if you go that route, a minor minor delay shouldn't stop you from using the launcher.
having said that, this is an alpha build. the bugs are surprisingly minimal and that makes me happy. can't wait for overclocking
i want to be able to drag an app on to an app to make a folder. can't do that on TW even though it is a feature of ICS...
in the facebook app you have to press an hold the + for a solid second or two before it will give you the option to like a post. not sure if this is FB on ICS or ICS on the Note or what.

Installed ICS from RootWiki this morning
I think the leaked version from RootWiki is pretty much stable and Im going to stay with it. There are some lags and weird things that happen from time to time but I can live with it. my main worry was that I would not have 4G. Well after hours of figuring out why I kept getting errors when flashing the radio i finally got it and now i have 4G. so this will be my daily driver. Now its time to experiment. cheers.

Some lag is an understatement, i had a lot of lag, regardless of the many ways i wiped/flash. Various launcher did not help and i find them inferior to TW... but to each is own. I ended up flash stock GB again

I used saurom with the ICS style theme, and while I was able to over clock it and get everything looking perfect.. this stock ICS runs smoother than the overclocked GB rom.
I'm very pleased and won't be going back. Hopefully a pure ICS rom comes soon enough, but until then I'm happy with this ICS leak.
Also, apex launcher is awesome!

Question about a ROM

Howzit guys,
I have a HTC Aria the AT&T version. I've rooted my phone and all the jazz. I'm interested in putting this ROM on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1588599
What I want to know is how much internal space will be available once the ROM is installed. I currently an running Froyo/w HTC Sense and there just isn't enough internal storage space on the phone.
Regards
There's much more space in non HTC Sense roms I think. If I remember correctly, there's about 118mb free at the start.
Also, you can use S2E to move your dalvik cache to the sd card which will give you an additional 50-100mb depending on your apps.
Where can I get S2E?
You can find s2e on the Google Play store. It uses a partition on your sd card. To create the partition you can use a function in the Rom Manager app, which should have come with the ROM you installed. If not, its also on the Play store. You can also create the partition with Clockwork recovery. It will completely wipe your sd card, so make sure you have a backup of stuff you want to save. The ROM Manager method is a little easier.
Once the partition is setup, s2e will give you the option of loading cache and program files to the sd card partition. When you have it load program files, it automatically loads all existing and new downloaded programs to the sd partition. Even those that usually don't provide that option. In fact, DON'T SET "MOVE TO SD" FOR INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS. While it sounds a little counter-intuitive, it will actually defeat the s2e function. The sd partition actually becomes an extension of your phone's memory. Its a very clever program for phones with limited memory.

I found the app but it's not compatible with my phone and I also saw this
S2E works only with CyanogenMod7 and CyanogenMod9!

If you are concerned about free space, I'd advise you to install Cyanogenmod and then use S2E. If configured correctly, it will give you as much space for apps as you are willing to dedicate on your SD card. Preferably do that only with a reasonably fast SD card (class 2 is probably too slow).
Sorry if I caused confusion there. Out of all the ROM available for HTC Aria, which do you guys rate as the best and which are you currently using?
I don't wanna go through all the effort of installing and backing-up and it turns out I put a bad ROM on my phone.
I would recommend this ROM by WinSuk. I think it is the most up-to-date CM9 / ICS ROM.

I would recommend CM7.2. even though it's not as up to date as ICS, it's very stable, and no bugs as far as I can tell.

I've always been a Sense-ROM sort of guy for my Aria - tried CM7 a while back, and found the battery life wanting in comparison. But lately, I'm sick of seeing the "not-compatible" message with some of the newer apps on the market...
Is CM7.2 worth a look? It's Android 2.3, correct?
I don't like the list of issues with the camera on CM9, otherwise I would jump on that Winsuk ROM. I use my camera a lot - take pictures of receipts for Evernote, purchase comparisons, barcode scanning, etc. I can't afford to lose any basic camera functionality.

Not trying to advertise or anything here (okay maybe ), but in case you haven't looked at the CM9 thread in awhile, everything works on the camera except video (which used to work, which is strange), and a separate app can be used to take it if needed.
There's also a 2.3 based sense ROM around here somewhere ("Gingersense" I think), but I don't remember if everything works on it..

So what doesn't work, then? FM radio? Watching videos on Youtube?
Also - none of those "Gingersense" ROMs were worth much, as Bluetooth and other functionality would either crash the phone or not work at all. Never a true working phone option...

Everything not working is listed in the thread. Pretty much only one major thing remains - videos use a software decoder instead of hardware, and if videos are too big (say, bigger then the screen's resolution) they play slow. So HQ on YouTube is mostly unwatchable, but LQ plays fine
There's also a bug/memory leak in the decoder, and if it goes too long the system will run out of memory & reboot (this bug is fixed in Jellybean/CM10 though)
FM radio works with Spirit FM
I should note that battery life probably won't be as good though (kind of expected with all the new stuff I think)
You can always try it and revert back if you don't like it
I read through the thread - it sounds more like a testing ROM than an everyday ROM still, at least for how I would use it.
I might take the leap to CM7.2 again though, and hope I can manage the battery better.
Ok so I really need to put a new ROM on now cause my phones internal storage is so low I can't even open my Gallery anymore. I've been looking at CM7 or CM9 but there's so many different version on each, how do I know which is the most stable for everyday use?

[Q] Some clairification needed

I bought my wife a Nook tablet 16g for Christmas (certified preowned) the stock ROM on the device is useless, aside from no access to google play interaction with the touchscreen is choppy and laggy, and sometimes you have to select items three times before they are selected, is this normal for a stock B&N tab?
I've spent the last three days scowering this forum gathering information, so far all I've done is loaded CM7 from this thread to SD card only, modifying it a bit to just do CM7. I chose CM7 because I figured it being an older ROM it would have most hardware working correctly and be the least buggy. Needless to say the device works great with this ROM none of the issues I experienced with the stock B&N ROM existed (great job devs. much appreciated) the only thing that struck me as odd with this ROM was it didn't seem optimized for a tablet and certainly not this tablet, as all the stock phone apps were still there, as well as camera and bluetooth. Is there a ROM out there that's more suited for the nook tablet is my next question, and can all these ROMs be put on SD card and booted from there rather than altering the internal software.
Next question is can the stock ROM be altered to make it usable? Rooting obviously, maybe a different kernel so things function smoothly, adding google play. This tablet is for my wife who is not very tech savy so the more simple I can make the device to use the better.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions that can be provided, this is only the second device I've worked with, the first being me and my wife's Samsung Infuse, so the more detailed the help the better, I am literate and not opposed to reading so good links to learning resources would be great, however I would like answers to my few questions.

I find rooted stock to be just marginally better than stock: many newer apps are not backward compatible with Android Gingerbread release (which stock ROM (as well as CM7) is based on), the co-habiting of the stock and CM10 interfaces quite awkward.
I'd suggest you first try running CM10 off an SD card, that way you can conveniently switch back and forth to stock and compare them, and flash it if you decide you like it.
And cm10 is well optimized for the tablet. Cm7 did seem to have the extra phone rudimentary stuff, but remember it was the first custom rom on the NT. Since then, the other roms are quite polished.
Excellent info thanks a lot guys I'm going to load a SD with CM10 and let my wife give it a whirl.
Is a class 10 micro SD too fast for this tablet? I thought in my reading I came across something about class 10 SD's being problematic, I may have mis-read though.
I just realized the thread I said I used to get the CM7 SD boot image, wasn't the one I actually used, so I though I already had an SD bootable .img of CM10 JB, but I guess I don't. What is the most problem free SD bootable version of CM10 JB (link if possible)? I really don't want to modify the internal storage of the unit till I'm 100% sure everything works good on the unit and I find the best ROM for it (which sounds like CM10 JB)
I don't have much to compare with, but I used this more or less fool proof guide: http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/
I ran the 1208 build from sd until a few days ago when I put it internally. I can't say I noticed any improvements running it internally compared to from sd so it's really good option in my opinion. (My Tablet har no problem booting from sd-card. Others have more problem and for those internal is a better choice.)

Thank you so much, just what i was looking for something simple and easy. I'm fine experimenting and learning on my own device but my wife just wants to use the dang thing. I noticed there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of SD images on the forums (unless I'm just not digging deep enough) i'm wondering why as booting from the SD seems like a great way to keep the device within warranty and get all the benifits of a rooted full android device.

Many NTs will only boot into SD from power-off and on insertion of a powered-USB cable -- an inconvenience if/when the NT ever hangs or reboots and you don't have a usb cable and a power source (e.g., wall/car charger or powered usb hub).

None, unless you want/need to swap sd cards for media storage.
On the other hand, few people who use CM would ever want to go back to stock, so keeping stock is mostly for convenience in the event of warranty claim (you can also just backup prior to flashing CM and restore stock when needed). Once the warranty expires, there is no reason to keep stock and waste space.

im looking for the route to go from here
ive successfully rooted and rom'd phones a few times no issues there but there are so many things going on im lost
i have a few issues i hope i can get help with and a few questions that will come out of them issues
my phone gets pretty sluggish after time the phone wont open and using it makes it get hot pretty quick
i dont play any games on it or install many odd apps
mainly i use:
phone
camera
video camera
facebook
sms
and email i have 5 accounts i use 3 gmail a yahoo and an exchange from work
should i use a different kernel?
is the newest android the best thing i should use on it ?
i see that the non working features of some of the roms is things i need to use like the camera or hidef recording.
also i see different things on different forums i know its a strange question because im on here but is there a forum best suited for the razr maxx ive used xda for my lg my galaxy tab10.1 and now the maxx just curious
also is there a way to make it send the pictures to the external sd card using it fills the internal one up and it sometimes locks up completely as it gets close to full, then i have to connect it usb and move the pictures to my PC
ive included pics of my system
Looks like you're running it on slim bean with 4.3.
If you want features like HD recording, then I suggest try some stock 4.1 based ROMs.
For storing images, you can find the option in settings. If you don't find it there, then you can swap your sdcards.

One big question to ask is do you use MMS (picture messaging)?
I say that because a lot of ROMS do not have it fully functioning, so that is something to keep an eye on. I am currently using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2535920&page=45 on mine, and it is working pretty well, but some people are experiencing issues with MMS and bluetooth (I am not facing those issues. Also, take some time to look at kernel upgrades, like JBX http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2223517, these can greatly alter the performance of your phone for the better and add things back in like 720p video recording.
thanks for the answers
i do use mms from time to time i have noticed that a rom i used in the past was one of the ones that didnt mms after a few fights with people that i didnt ignore them lol
last night i tried flashing eclipse 1.5 but it wouldn't boot i think i was using the wrong version maybe? so today i reflashed slim spyder 4.3
why is it that the android 4.1 stock roms will work better than the highly modified custom roms ? isnt the idea of developing new features to make the best of the OS and hardware and have all the features without the BLOAT ? ( i made it look fat for effect hahah)
how do i swap the sd cards ? maybe a link, and will it help? im not sure because it saves them to the internal storage not the internal sd card i think and the phone gets all filled up nd then goes completely haywire
im really unsure on what of those 2 links would be the best way to go
i also not sure how to know if im on a stock -based rom
It looks like you are on SlimBean, so not a stock rom.
I don't know that I would go as far as saying that stock roms work better than highly customized roms, but there are a lot of "unofficial" or "alpha" build roms that just aren't finished. Those will inherently have issues.
Can you post the links to the threads that you got the rom from? There are a couple different options for your phone, depending on your carrier. It looks like you are on CDMA, so you need to make sure you are downloading those builds, not UMTS builds.
As far as the links go, use the first link to get the new rom, and load it through safestrap. If you need a tutorial on that, you can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2427125
When you boot into safestrap, you will create a partition and install the rom, then reboot and enjoy!

The answer would be a very long story but I'll cut it short as much as I can.
Everything you said is absolutely right. But some of the reasons the custom ROMs doesn't work are locked contents by the manufacturer.
Locked bootloaders, locked libraries and many more. We're lucky that some devs actually devoted a lot of hard work to even make custom ROMs work on this device.
So our phone has a lot of locked stuff which is necessary for things like HDMI and HD recording to work. The custom kernel cannot access it.
So these features work with stock Moto kernel only which was based on 4.1
To swap sdcards, you need to edit the build.prop. I shall post the steps as soon as I have access to my laptop.
DROID RAZR with Tapatalk 4
that's awesome
i truly respect the people devoting time to developing it does make computers mainly my phone more of a personal thing
id love to try the swap sd card thing thank you

To swap sdcards. You will need a file explorer with root (E.S. Explorer or Root Explorer).
Go to system and open build.prop for editing.
Search for the line
Code:
#persist.sys.vold.switchexternal=1
Change it to
Code:
persist.sys.vold.switchexternal=1
(remove the #)
Save the build.prop
Reboot

Maybe we should petition Huawei for a stock 5.0...

We've all had various levels of frustrations regarding the Huawei overlay (for me, the battery saving options killing music apps no matter the settings). We saw how they reacted to the Kitkat cutoff; maybe we should start a petition for a stock L update?

I'm not having this problem on any of my 3 mate2 devices. got to be operator error.
As much as I'd love a stock ROM, I doubt it would work. It's like asking Samsung to do a stock ROM.
But since our phone's source is out and AOSP's source is out, we just need a developer with our phone to get Lollipop.
This phone will never get Lollipop.
Suuuuuuuuure, Hauwei claims it is coming. However isn't that the same song and dance that they said in regards to this phone and Kit Kat?
I will believe it when I see it. I would encourage everyone else to not hold their breath.
ur misinformed. Huawei never once said or claimed to update the mt2-l 03 to KK.
Won't matter to me...stock 4.3 is super stable, battery life is excellent and unless some app I want to use, requires 4.4 or above,
I'll stick with what it came with. Just because there is a "new" OS, doesn't make it better...JUST NEW.
I actually prefer 4.3 also. I hate how kitkat screws up the sd card with write security. I know that sd kitkat fix are available for rooted phones but I still have problem with it. If LL removes that restriction then maybe I will update to LL. Otherwise I would prefer to stick to 4.3.

They did to me. Before I bought it in early July, I had more than one support chat with Huawei reps confirming that it would be updated. Two different reps told me the same line - it was 4.3 at launch, and would be updated to KitKat within 60 days but they could not confirm a firm date. I wouldn't have bought it without that assurance.

My SD is tweaked as it is so I personally hope an update will fix it. Most of the time when using Root Explorer or any other, I cannot move filed from the SD card to internal storage or vise versa. Such as pushing an app to system/data (or app) or pushing a ringtone to system/media It shows as if there is no SD mounted however there clearly is because my music files and videos play just fine and they are on the card.
For some reason my SD card gets unmounted at times. I can't see the movies/pictures in it. I go to settings and i unmount and mount the sd card and then it's fine

I try that too but I still cant move things to internal storage for some reason. I can't even edit the build.prop to try to fix it

Just out of curiosity, you don't have a text file called set_immutable_list anywhere in your system folder? There is one on the Chinese Mate 2's and whatever location is listed in the set immutable list file is blocked even if you have root. I have found a way around it, just sounds like the same problem I experienced before I found a fix.

Have you tried un-check "Mount namespace separation" in SuperSU as mentioned here:

I am 100% happy with 4.3 as well. I was very concerned with getting this phone, but the battery life sucked me in. I love the fact that I can basically do anything I want on my phone all day, and not need a charger. Everything works smooth and it is extremely stable. There is nothing I can't do with this phone, that I had done with KitKat or Lollipop. I think more companies need to look at what Huawei has done with this phone and follow their lead. Instead of going thinner, they should be concentrating on battery life. I have had phones with much better specs, but they weren't nearly as smooth. I think people worry too much about the OS.
Battery life is the most important factor for me these days in a phone , obviously with the implication that other aspects of the phone are also descent. I'm really baffled, bewildered, confused when someone buys a $600-$1000 phone when you can put up a very decent gaming PC for an equivalent amount with 10 times firepower. What bothers me is those reviewers criticizing the phone for not having a very high ppi or not achieving a certain benchmark score or not having a fingerprint reader etc when you won't be needing/using/noticing them anyway. In my opinion, the HAM2 is a very impressive phone; in fact one of the best along with 1+1 when it comes to getting more than what you're paying for. I have to say I'm surprised that the HAM7 doesn't seem to follow HAM2 pricewise !

Agree 100% Value for money is what I'm after. That and great battery life. HAM2 comes through on both.
Hardware, OS, pixel density isn't as important, IF it is designed, optimized correctly. Other than benchmark programs,
I've run my HAM2 against an N6, S5, and there MIGHT be a blink of an eye difference in launching and running apps.
Specs on phones have far outstripped the software's ability to take advantage of the horsepower.
Why anyone spends 700 or more on a device, when there are mid range alternatives, that perform as well, I just don't get
it.
Grab a phone with lollipop on it and you will see what youre missing. And even better battery life. My e970 gets about 25% better battery life. Not to mention the new capabilities. This phone with L on it would be nothing short of amazing..

We've just got to be patient and wait for Tom to make our dreams come true. At this point, I don't even care about the Huawei update. I asked them about it again today on Instagram and they said it still has a release date of the first half of this year (can you get any more vague?) and they'll share info with us once they get more information. Not very promising if you ask me.

Agreed 100%. Looking forward to it. I can see this phone going three or four days if he manages a lollipop build. Not putting any faith into Huawei. And having the CC version makes the chances even slimmer. Only donated a few times to developers. He will for sure be the next. Lost hope anyone would even try.
