[Q] Thank you and question on modding out of box - HTC Rezound

I finally jumped - at the recommendations from users here - and ordered my Rezound. Ill be coming from the Fascinate which was extremely easy to work with and has been a great phone for modding.
I've been reading every thread I can on s-off, root, unlock......man its alot to take in. But thank you to everyone here for all the great work.
A brief question - and totally subjective - but anyone have a preference to letting the Rezound activate and run stock for a few days vs unlock\root right out of the box prior to activation?
Im not going to go crazy until I learn all the terminology and step-by step processes. Illl probably just unlock, flash a recovery and root for now, deal with custom ROMS, kernels and S-off later. I do have a 14 day trial period, so Ill be following any threads for modding that are reversible in the short term.
Thanks again to all here and I hope my education on the Rezound is a good experiance.

Once you unlock, it's not reversible without being s-off if I'm not mistaken. I'd suggest waiting a little while to make sure the hardware is stable before you do anything to the phone.
Of course I had mine unlocked 30 mins after I got it..

.....so wait 31 minutes ? Thanks for the advice.
Root is the biggest thing I need for now; just to get apps like Titanium, Easy tether, etc. working. Im not a big fan og Sense, but can deal with it.
If I could root without unlock, Id be fine. But.......

I told myself I'd run stock until my 14 day trial was up, but that didn't last a week If you s-off you can totally revert from what I can tell.
And buying a new phone is one of the most time-consuming purchases I make now, because I have to spend a couple of days reading XDA first, lol.

Ive been doing the same: alot of reading.
I may just jump in with both feet right away. I can follow directions, the forum is very helpful, and I read everything at least 4 times before I do it.
I figure most anything is reversible. As long as I walk before I run and know how to undo it, Im good.

I say do it all right away. With S-Off you can go back to stock out of the box. I sent my last phone back after unlocking, rooting, and flashing various things. As long as you have S-Off, you can get it back to stock easily.

To root or not to root?

Just to give you guys some background, I had a rooted Fascinate and I loved it, not to mention is was extremely fast. I like the stock TB but I feel like I could pull some better battery life with rooting and get rid of the bloat. However, while I was extremely familiar with rooting and flashing roms and kernels on the Fascinate (changed ROMS and kernels almost every week or two), I have never done it through ADB on the TB. Everyone seems to say they haven't needed to root their TB so they haven't, so I am getting mixed feedback on me. So...either persuade me to root or not to root...
Root or no?
Root it, manually, end of story.
If you don't like how it is, you can always go back to a completely stock, unrooted state.

thats what I am thinking. My fascinate was blazing fast with root I can't imagine how much faster this thing should be rooted
Ya man, why are you asking questions instead of rooting this very second!!
But anyway, jump on in.... The water is bamf
Do it. Just make sure all the files are in the same directory as ADB and follow the directions closely. Took me less than a half hour last night.

Maybe this will make you feel better.....
I was 100% unfamiliar with rooting. I actually had never heard of it until buying the thunderbolt. I bought the phone just wanting something new and fast, as my old moto droid was basically unusably slow. I started reading threads online about battery life on the TB, because mine was sucking, and time and time again people talked about rooting to gain battery life. I called a good friend of mine who is a computer whiz, and he walked me through the process.
Four weeks later, my rooted Thunderbolt and me have been through 4 Roms (3, really, since the 4th was me going back to bamf remix), a number of kernels, and a whole lot of happiness.
Semi-Long story, I know, but i'm just giving you the winded speech, when really i coulda just said ROOT THAT PHONE!!!!!
So, what I would say to you is this. While i may be new to this whole rooting thing, i've always been a tech junkie. I'm incredibly obsessive about my gadgets running fast and efficient. I couldn't be happier that I rooted this phone, and I firmly believe any android device I purchase in the future I will root. I've gained battery life, speed, and customizability. I damn near brought my phone from useful to necessary. You won't regret rooting the TB.
My first rom was bamf remix 1.6.3. I followed that with twisted sense, then VirusROM TB, and now i'm back to bamf. I actually preferred VirusROM as a whole, but there were a couple issues that were dramatic enough for me to switch back to bamf. But i won't rant about that here. That's for another topic.
Root your phone. The TB just loves it.
(sorry for being so winded, i'm just excited about it all! =)
My last phone was the Incredible. Awesome phone even by todays standards. It was rooted. I didn't have this Tbolt long enough to kill the battery before rooting it so I can't speak to battery life gains. You only need ADB to root it. You don't need it to flash new ROMs or kernels or mods. Clockworkmod recovery does that for you. Plus, you'll find that the CPU in the Tbolt is possibly one of the most overclockable chips in history. I'm humming along at 1.42ghz with no problem and ramping it up to 1.6 or even 1.9 isn't at all unheard of. If there was ever a a Droid made for rooting, this phone is that phone.
I rooted my phone an hour after getting it from my local store. ADB is not hard to do (it was my first time too) you just need to follow the steps to the T. My Tbolt is opened up and having fun with all the new ROMs I'm putting on it. Loving it

Wanna root and flash roms, but im scared...

I did this with my eris over and over with no issues. Now, for some reason, im a lil worried w my TB. Can anyone provide me the links to software & such that i would need to get started, some 'how-to's, and what not!? I alwaus try to have the hottest phone sh*t out of anyone i know, so please hook me up w the newest stuff! I know thos could be a lot to ask, so to whoever helps, thanks a million!

Everything you need is stickied in the dev section. Read the root how to at least three times through before doing anything. Make sure you can "see" your phone via adb. If you're still unsure, watch some youtube videos. Rooting the Tbolt is not hard, just be thoroughly prepared beforehand. If you run into problems, ask for help in IRC chat (you'll get the fastest response there) or here. Good luck

If I did it you can.Took me a couple of times trying but eventually got it. Now used about 3 different Roms.
I went from the Eris to TB and I was a little apprehensive at first. Watch the "How to root thunderbolt" video on YouTube. I strongly suggest doing it through adb as the experience is vital. Good luck! I'm running Gingeritis 1.0, just as a suggestion.

I'm a newbie too, just as long as you backup everything ti should be ok.
Thank god for forums, that's the bottom line, there's always someone here to help you.
I'm gonna say read EVERYTHING 3 times. There's a lot of ROMs, a lot of radios, and plenty of ways of ending up with a phone that that doesn't work (not bricked, just a dud setup.) There are ways to brick it you wouldn't guess, but I think those days are behind us. Any of the gingerbread builds will have quirks. The froyo builds are generally solid, especially the MR2 builds. Just gotta play around.
The easiest method being trying to root with an uncharged battery .
i agree with what everyone has said (actually i don't know anything about the battery mention). only thing i would add is when you do decide to root, do it when you won't be rushed. I rooted via 1-click a DINC, but the tbolt was much different and all together a much better experience getting to know adb. If you know a little bit of command line, you will understand what you are doing (mostly). but even if you don't know hardly anything about command line, all the instructions i found give you the commands.
The Eris was a one-click root correct? The Thunderbolt rooting process will definitely take longer than the Eris rooting process, but I wouldn't say any specific step is difficult. After you're rooted the process of flashing a specific ROM or radio should be the same. Just remember to rename radios PG05IMG.zip and flash in Hboot, and usually do a data wipe before you flash a new ROM.
The entire rooting process will probably take around an hour, or even more if you're not familiar with adb. Just follow the directions closely, and be patient.
Learn basic commands for adb shell and download/install/update it on your computer.
The biggest pain in the ass I've found on ROMs for the TB is the radio.
If you want a froyo based/CM/AOSP ROM it takes one type of radio a Gingerbread based ROM is a different type of radio.
Simple commands in adb can reboot from recovery (clockwork recovery mod) to bootloader to change radios. IF you remember to place it on the root of your sd card.
Nandroid backup, Nandroid backup, Nandroid backup.
The devs are really starting to put out some A1 ROMs out there.
Just like Ford v. Chevy v. Dodge, everyone has their favorites. Backup and flash away....
Been there. I used Auto root(MR1) which was very easy. Just take your time and it walks you right through the process. Took about 30 minutes, tops. And unroot is even easier and only takes 5 minutes.
I was kinda scared at first also but I have rooted and flashed ROMs on 2 thunderbolts now , it is a fairly easy process , just have to follow the instructions and you will be fine , biggest scare I had was flashing radios , after that its a piece of cake , Good Luck !!!!
Awesome Phone after it is rooted and the bloatware is gone , better battery life....
I rooted through ADB, after that, I've never used it again. I flash roms almost daily. Nothing to be scared of. If you do a nandroid before you flash, even if something bad happens, you can always go right back to a known working condition by doing a nandroid restore. I know it's scary at first, but once you do it, you'll be flashing roms and radios all the time! It's gets addicting, and it's actually fun
Like anything for the first time, you might be apprehensive beforehand but once it's under your belt you'll think back and wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Follow the procedure, get it in your head and pull the trigger.
Its not for everyone but it's not that difficult either.
I was a Newbie with ADB too, I held off hoping for a 1 click method, and then got impatient. I read the guides several times (as mentioned in earlier replies) before I started, and I double and triple checked every command line as I did them... It was a bit nerve wracking, but I managed to get through it without a scratch. And about 2 weeks ago I was able to walk my buddy through it over the phone from 1500 miles away. As long as you're slow, methodical and careful, there's not much to be worried about.

[Q] Just got a Rezound, how soon should i root?

Getting my rezound today, although not a poster a very frequent lurker. My question is, I rooted my Eris almost immediately after I got it, and I rooted my Incredible the day I got it. Should I rooy my Rezound immediately?? I have read about some warranty issues with the phone and I see it is a hassle to get back to stock. As for my tech knowledge I can root and flash but I am not a programmer. Thanks for the help.

do as i say:
1. HTC Dev unlock
2. flash amonRa Recovery
3. Root
4. s-off
at this point you will be **LOCKED** and s-off. Do whatever you want to it at this point, just don't HTCDev Unlock again. If you need to get back to stock from this point for warranty fears... just flash the latest official software via RUU, and run the s-on procedure, you will then be **LOCKED** and s-on, and fully stock.
peace.

yeah the all-in-one tool is nice for getting you through the htcdev unlock process in a pinch... an getting amonRA installed... but it's root script doesn't work right (at least not on ics)-- i wrote a fixed one. and I question it's kernels..etc.

I'll be the one cautionary advisor.
DON'T root your Rezound until you've had a chance to play with it at least a month.
What happens if you root it today and have to swap it out tomorrow under warranty?
There are no confirmed reports of being charged for a returned rooted phone, but rooting does put you at risk. And there are plenty of confirmed reports of hardware issues.
Give yourself some time to make sure you have a good phone.

I completely agree with this. You have 14 days to play with your Rezound and decide if you want to keep it.
If developer support is important to you and you're hoping to get a slew of AOSP options, you might want to think twice. AOSP is coming, but we have no idea in what capacity it will be supported or if we'll get an official CM9 or what.
If you love Sense and want nothing more than Sense ROMs, then stick around; there are tons of them in all sorts of variants (Sense 3.6 & 4.0).
It's a fantastic device no matter how you look at it. The hardware is truly superb. Just make sure it's right for you.
I rooted mine after two days. It's easy, just READ EVERYTHING. Especially the s-off process. I haven't s-off yet though. I don't see the need yet til after official ota comes out

If you're going to root, you might as well do S-Off if you have the time and patience to read through all of the material. You can actually return the phone to stock, ROM installation is easier and more straightforward, you can switch radios if needed and RUU upgrade or downgrade.
The biggest reason to do it now is that there's no guarantee that S-Off will work in the future. I held off doing S-Off for a few weeks at first (mostly because of lack of time), but looking back I would have done it sooner if I could have. Pretty much all of the bugs have been encountered and sorted out.
yeah, if you're nervous or want some real-time walk through of your s-off process and what not, join us on irc... and be patient, once one of us is around we'll get you through it, we've done it for others a dozen times at least now and all have been successful.
Root in exactly 29 days, 23hours and 59minutes after you first turned it on. Timing is extremely important!!

Ya I know. I'm going to s-off soon since the ota will be out somewhat soon. I just saw no point in s-off with no official radios to flash and flashing kernel in bootloader and fastboot is no big deal to me. When I got my rezound, s-off was still somewhat uncommon but now it isn't. I really want to have everything figured out first before I do it and make sure I understand everything before I attempt so I don't end up like these other people posting "ahhh I bricked my phone with s-off!!!!" Even though they really didn't and just made a mistake due to ignorance or not paying attention. After you obtain s-off in control bear, you just flash an ruu in bootloader? Is that right?
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
I rooted mine 10 minutes after I got it out of the box. If you end up not liking it, you could always trade or sell it. If you try to exchange it in the 14 day period Verizon charges a $35 restocking fee. If you have issues and want it exchanged just call customer service and tell them you have already tried multiple factory data resets and the problem persists. Just go s-off and enjoy it.

Just need to create a nandroid containing at least boot image. ControlBear, IIRC, reboots you to recovery once completed, so you can then restore boot. As it does all the work from the boot partition.
@OP
Wait about a week. Any defects should show within that time.

After you obtain S-Off, what you do next depends on what you want to do with your phone. If you want to upgrade/downgrade the radios, hboot, and firmware, go ahead and flash an RUU in the bootloader. The 3.13 and 3.14 leaks are fairly stable, though I had better luck with the 3.13 radios (which are the same as 3.11). You can then reinstall your recovery (for example, use a PH98IMG.zip to flash AmonRa back on your phone), and restore a nandroid if you want. Otherwise you can just install a new ROM. Depending what firmware you're already on (leak or OTA), you may need to flash the appropriate file to get your nandroid backup to run properly, as the newer firmware changes the SD card mount points. But from now on when you do nandroid restores it will properly restore your kernel. Similarly most new ROMs are oriented towards S-Off devices, and will just require you to flash once in recovery and not go through the install kernel in bootloader process any more.
Edit: You probably have already read this, but do not unlock your phone again after getting S-Off. You can't get back to the "Locked" status without redoing the S-Off procedure. Either flash one of the modified Hboots, or simply flash the PH98IMG.zip version of your recovery of choice. I'm on the stock hboot and did the latter.
Do it right meow!
How long will it take you to find a paperclip?
Edit:
BTW you guys really get into some detail. All he asked was how long he should wait. You guys are like typing out books and ****..

continuing on with the Rezound?...

I've had the Rezound for some time now and am actually on my 3rd replacement(issues before with overheating & signal drops). Anyway, the current Rezound I've had for awhile & never bothered unlocking/rooting thinking it'd eventually encounter problems like my previous ones. I finally decided I'd like to tinker with some ROMs but been having a hell of a time getting a recovery to stick/work properly & getting S-OFF(It updated to the most recent ICS not too long ago).
It's now almost 1AM(been at it since around 9PM)... read lot's of guides from multiple forums, tried multiple procedures, etc... & so far only got the phone unlocked and a delightful **TAMPERED*** msg in HBOOT. - although the phone still boots up & functions just fine. I've been having that urge to "throw in the towel" & even as is, someone's offered me $200 for the phone. If I sell it, I can pick up either a GS3 for an extra $100 or a RAZR MAXX HD for an extra $75. I remember the original RAZR's screen bothered my eyes and didn't like the G Nexus I had briefly.
I do have a bit of an attachment to this Rezound but this S-OFF/root bit is really pissing me off now. What would you guys do?
[EDIT] A bit of a glitch there getting Aman Ra loaded but it's done now(still displays tampered in hboot but oh well, it's working anyway...) & have NeoMAX 2.0 installed (still S-ON). Last time I tried tinkering with this phone they only had temp root available. Going to play around with it for awhile now and see how things go. ^_^
S-Off is definitely not mandatory. I have been flashing roms for over a year on my rezound and I am s-on. If you have unlocked bootloader and root your set. You just occasionally need your pc to push the boot.img.
Tampered just means you have a custom recovery installed. Like im_high_tech said, you can flash kernels when you're s-on. If you need help with that, let us know.

If frustration about the ***TAMPERED*** thing is what is making you think of changing phones, don't worry about that, it's supposed to say that. As shrike mentioned, that's normal. It just means you have a custom recovery on it.
I would keep the Rezzy if you don't want to spend any more money. It's a great phone imho.

Just so you know, you'll only lose your unlimited data if you renew/upgrade. You can buy a phone from a 3rd party and switch out whenever you want & maintain your unlimited.
I have a Galaxy S3 now that I'm using as my primary(and unlimited is still there). The Rezound I've held onto though as a backup & use it as my media player.
He speaks the truth. I had a TBolt and my wife had the Rezound. She hated the proximity issue so we switched (score for me). When I checked with Big Red, they confirmed that I would not lose my unlimited data, so I switched and haven't looked back

Long time since Ive rooted or used custom roms, Need Suggestions HTC ONE MAX Sprint

K, Here's a little background. I've been using HTC Products for years. Kinda stuck on them. Way back when the HTC ONE Max was released I purchased 2 through Sprint VIA the upgrade Program. One for me, one for my wife. She preferred Samsung so I boxed hers back up, and well, forgot about it until last night when going through my dresser. I am going to activate it on my account, and retire my old one and just use it on a spare line I have ( now that my oldest son has his own plan ) for data, etc. I want to make some changes to it, and since its been soooooo long since I have rooted or used custom rom's. I am hoping some of you guys can help me out. There isn't much activity here for this phone right now, mostly folks having issues or looking for the cheap way. I am not concerned with dropping $25 on viper if needed, I'm all for ease. What I really need is advice on what methods to use to achieve my goals. Basically I don't care if I run stock rom, or custom. I just want to eliminate all the bloatware, Be able to tether the phone for wifi, and be able to access and use certain apps that require rooting. That's basically it. If I need to flash a custom rom, fine, so be it. What are the most stable roms out there for this phone that are still receiving updates. I have really tried using the search function to find the current procedures to S-off, root etc, but its pretty much a mess out there searching for current stuff, as many threads go back years. Hopefully this thread can kinda be a current guide to help folks like me that really like there Max's, at least till the next HTC Phablet comes out ( if ever ).
I would really appreciate any help you phone Guru's can give, especially since this is probably such a low demand device right now.. It would be really awesome if someone could post step by step, and include links to current info/downloads..The phone in question is running 4.4.2, Sense version 6.0, Software version 3.03.651.3
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!
Root; Sunshine to s-off and then TRWP and viper rom with sense 7
