I've heard about phones that can't relock the bootloader after unlock, or that keep track of the number of rom flashes, as ways to tell if you have rooted(and thus voided your warranty). Are there any checks on the S3?
Yes

Yes. There is a custom flash counter
Sent from my SPH-L710...if some one helps you press the thanks button
Flash counter can be reset tho

Just flash a stock recovery and the flash counter will be reset

Which phone do you have? I don't think is that easy on the S3.
Thanks for your help. Hopefully by the time I have the cash in august it'll be even easier to root without upping the count.

I recently unrooted my GS2 i777, but now when I make phone calls (calls do actually connect) I cannot hear on either end. No sound sent, no sound received....
any ideas?
What ROM were you on before?

some build of ICS. Not sure exactly. I found how to unroot here http://galaxys2root.com/category/att-galaxy-s2/.
Everything should b stock now...or so i think...
Sounds like you might have the wrong modem installed.

With that unroot file from galaxys2root.com, it had all the files in one .tar (for the PDA slot in Odin) Where would i be able to track down the right modem file?
You could root again and then flash i777 modem and kernel to see if that will help. Are all your touch keys working?
Fyi if you want to unroot, you are beret off useing the sticky on this forum to do so.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
Ya all the keys are working just fine. It connects to data, and i can send texts, just no voice.
I'm sorry, I'm admittedly a noob and cannot find it in the stickies....lol
just wondering why you decided to unroot?
Anyways if you are unrooted use this to get root back. If you are 2.3.6 you might want to do some reading to make sure this method will work.

Can he just simply perform "factory reset" to bring back bone stock from a custom ROM?
Is that easy??? Hmmm
His first post said he unrooted already.

Dumb question. So I'm rooted. Can I use other carrier roms? Also have the boot loader unlocked and carrier unlock. Does that mean I can use this phone on another carrier if I ever left Verizon??? Thanks

I'll be the first to say it...
I screwed up my phone entirely and I know. But that's neither here nor there at this point.
I'm really just hoping for some serious help at this point.
Thanks in advance.
I was stock ll4 baseband and attempted to run “one click"casual to root/unlock/recovery.
Somehow during this process my phone managed to root but failed to unlock or install custom recovery.
I made it back to home screen and checked for root status to verify.
This is where the bonehead mistakes come in
I then tried to install twrp manually thinking the bootloader possibly unlocked during casual. But it did not.
After trying to boot into recoveryi get a notification that I am running custom software and to return my device immediately to Verizon.
I can't get back to home screen either same message.
I attempted to revert to stock several times using droidstyle method and Odin keeps coming at sboot.bin.
Does anyone out there no wtf I did to my phone?
Please help. Thank you

I just PMd you. I am pretty much at a loss with where to go next. I have tried multiple restores to stock and sboot.bin continues to fail.
Thanks for your help

I just picked up this phone today. And just rebooted and it said custom unlocked. I've seen another person say this too. However I'm wondering if anyone knows why. I don't plan on rooting till I can unlock the bootloader too and more custom roms come out.

No idea. I have the same image as well. I rooted though.

So you picked it up from Verizon that way? If so boot in to download mode (power on holding the volume down button, then press volume up) and see if Write protection is Enabled. You'll have to pull the batter to get out of download mode.
Update I checked it again now and haven't rebooted or done anything still. And now it says official. This is so weird... I'm not the first to see this either. Maybe the device is randomly unlocking and locking the bootloader. Cuz I rebooted like four total times. And once it said unlocked custom. And checked status a couple times and it's always official but that one time. Previous post. I just picked up the phone today. Haven't rooted yet either. I don't wanna root until bootloader and roms and everything are set to go. I hate stock but it is what it is for now.

Up this still makes no sense what if I need to bring to Verizon I'm bone stock and it sometimes says custom on reboot and in device status as well. Both change. I know I'm not the only one. And I'm not rooted or anything. Bone bone stock... Should I return?..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
No I'm not bs. I've had it say custom unlocked on rebooting once out of like the four times total. And this will say original or custom randomly certain times of the day? Like the phone unlocks the bootloader and relocks at different hours?

That's bs, take it back........Even if you plan to unlock the boot loader down the road, you don't need to be dealing with the inconsistency of the stock boot loader locking and unlocking itself when it feels like it.
I saw another person with the same issue but I think was rooted I've had it for a day. I don't want to return it if other people have the same issue. I need more feedback.

I have had this issue as well. Mine was related to flashing a debloated rom after rooting. I ended up getting a new phone from verizon, just acted like I had no idea what was going on.

Has your new phone had any issues yet. Any signs of it. Should I try and exchange?

And do what?...
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Seeing how there are a few people with this issue and probably people that have it and don't even know. This may be just a software bug which is why I'm hesitating to exchange and get a phone worse off.

If your running any aftermarket kernels or kernel mod apps and have the "set on boot" active, it will trigger the custom logo.

No but it's best to just factory reset before you do it to avoid any issues that may arise.

Unlocking the bootloader will fully wipe the device, I don't know how rumrunner works but I do know that if you unlock it will wipe everything

Rumrunner unlocks the bootloader via an exploit rather than the normal dev unlock (which is unavailable for the DNA), so it doesn't erase the device.
Agree with @detonation. It did not wipe my device when I used it on my warranty replacement.
Didn't wipe my device either!
