MeanRom ICS v2.4 vs MeanRom 4.5 - HTC EVO 3D

Are the performance upgrades in MeanRom ICS worth it over the stability and battery life of MeanRom 4.5?

Probably not much different in terms of battery life. Although I am holding out for the official release. Will update at time of PRI / radio, etc. I may actually decide not to make the move at all. There are 3 problems I have with the ICS builds. My shapewriter keyboard has issues when switching from number to letter mode and it does double numbers. Also, SMS backup and SMS backup+ both fail. I need something that integrates with GMAIL and it seems there are no options that work in ICS... no clue why.

The performance and battery life are pretty close once you get the new Rom to settle in. Idk its really up too you on what you prefer new shiny or something old but been polish up to have that little extra shine
mean Ics evo3D

I had terrible battery life after I went to ICS MeanRom. I switch to another ICS Rom, and my battery life pre-ICS returned.

How long did you run MeanROM? Asking because I've read complaints where a ROM was only run for a couple hours then switched. That's just not enough time. Also flashing a ROM with a full battery seems to make a difference for me.
I went 26hrs on battery with ICS 2.4 last weekend. That's with texting, web, email, phone calls, etc. What I consider medium usage. Didn't watch any videos or play games. Wouldn't change back to GB for anything. All my apps work great. ICS itself is a tad bit slower than 4.5GB was but that's due to the kernel. Stable as can be so far

What's slower in MeanRom ICS? The transitions, opening apps, etc? Would you say 4.5 is smoother than ICS?

Clankfu just stick with GB. The only reason I haven't went back to GB because the features are hard to give up. The new youtube gui is stupendous. I personally liked GB roms better but just like someone said before it's because of the kernel. Now(if they do at all) if sprint releases their version, ICS will surpass the GB roms by a wide margin but until, GB wins hands down.

Loading apps, but by like 3 seconds.

ICS
I haven't had any problems with MeanROM's ICS. It works rather well for me. Then again, I think there should be a rom review board to get people's opinions so we can at least have a top ten, finding a rom you like has become daunting being that it seems anyone can cook a rom now of days.

Any recent roms that are fully stable?

Seems that every ROM I look at in here has a bunch of issues. I'm coming over from the OG Evo, and know nothing about photon's development- although I get the gist its an underappreciated device. Just looking for something to make it worth rooting the photon, which is a great phone imo.

have you tried CM9? sure theres a few bugs but its my daily. otherwise i hear that miui is turning out pretty good but i havnt flashed it myself for a few builds. you could always try cm7 or rokko also.
CM7 and CM9 are the best. Use both of them, CM7 is more stable and all works, but CM9 is very smooths and awesome!

As quick as it is to root the Photon I would do it just for the ability to use root apps. Then, try some of the custom locked roms available before you unlock. CM9 is a great rom but still a beta and has issues such as camera, signal, battery, etc. which is to be expected.
I still prefer the stock rom just because of full functionality, battery life, and signal quality but there are many good custom roms based off stock builds (which I have not tried) that might work well for you.
Running CM7 here and am happy with that as my daily driver. Not brave enough to try CM9 but that's just my personal preference/bias. Joker's non CM9 roms & Lokifish Marz's roms are also good choices.
Three great roms:
-CM7 (KANG)
-ROCKO 3.0 (NOT 3.5)
-Imperium Initiative 1.04
As for which is better... It's a tossup. CM7 last longer, but ROCKO feels more fluid and user friendly. CM7 is more technical...
CM9 is very impressive but it is a beta.

I finally took the dive into unlocking my Photon's bootloader, (having never done it before on a phone) and I had almost zero issues rooting/unlocking/flashing the ROM.

I'd like to quickly point out that Jokersax's CyanogenMod 9 beta is honestly pretty stable. The camera, MMS, signal, and battery life is very much exceeding my expectations, considering this is a rom that is labelled as a beta.
I'd also like to state my opinions towards the OP's original question: In order of stability, here is what I would recommend.
1-Stock. (obviously).
2-HomeBase
3-CyanogenMod 7.2
4-RockoRom 3.0 (3.5 is good as well, but based on experience I recommend 3.0)
5-Jokersax's CyanogenMod 9, link is in the beginning of my post.
6-Imperium Initiative
Finally, 7-[email protected]/[email protected]
The rom I use the most is Jokersax's CyanogenMod 9. It's a very good rom.
Quickly-- One last thing. If you DO flash a rom, please please please PLEASE do not complain about the battery life until you do these steps:
~Let your battery drain to 0%
~Charge your battery to 100%
~Wipe battery stats via the advanced menu in a custom recovery(recommended), or an application
~Drain battery to 0%, then charge to 100%.
Then you can complain about the battery life... if it's bad, that is. Lol.

I was comparing CM9 to stock and there is no way CM9 has better battery than stock. Not even close. In my experience with running CM roms on multiple devices they all seem to drain the battery more I would assume due to the kernels used. I know this doesn't really have anything to do with stability but relates to the overall feel of the OP question I think which is why I mentioned it.
With that said roms are going to run different for each user especially with a beta build.

I don't quite remember saying that the battery life was better than stock... But surely sir, you must be doing something wrong. I have 2 photons running cm9, one is activated and one is not, the one that is activated has the minimum at 216 mhz and the max at 1300 mhz, and it's usual cpu is going at 800mhz-ish. the one that is not activated is clocked to the max at 1300mhz constantly, min is 1300 and max is obviously 1300. they both run roughly the same amount of time before dying, usually 7/8hrs. with stock, not rooted, my batter lasts anywhere from 8-9hrs being heavily used.
I never said that the battery life was better than stock on cm9, i said it was EXCEEDING MY EXPECTATIONS FOR A BETA. Sir, you honestly should double check the post of which you're criticizing before you make such an accusation.
And of course roms are going to be different for everybody, depending on how they use it and what they do with it. I've only tweaked jokersax's build to fix the mms issue, as his fix doesn't help. my fix helps ME, but considering the fact that jokersax's fix works for plenty of others, that obviously points out the fact that roms run differently for everybody.
One last thing; who's cm9 build are you talking about? because you mentioned bugs, and jokersax's barely has any. the battery life issue has a solution that can be found at the end of my first post. please, read it.

I will say it.... jokers cm9 roms battery life kick the crap out of stock. It does have some pretty annoying bugs tho.... like everytime you rotate the screen while using the browser it force closes, or the camera that doesn't take great pictures...mainly with the flash. But other than that it does work pretty well.
I did just switch to cm7 and while everything on it seems to work great, the battery life is no where near as good as cm9.
Btw both I have Max CPU at 1000.

Really? For me, the camera's damnnear perfect. huh. But yeah, the rotation isn't great, but I never use rotation. It pisses me off, lol. The only thing atm that makes me mad is that google play won't let me download anything because I'm not on an official android rom. Anyone else have this problem?

But I'll post about this on a different thread, we gotta stay on topic. Thanks for trying to help me!
I flashed back last night and tried taking pictures with dark light.... I found if I use the button on the screen instead of the button on the side of the phone it takes much better pictures. All in all I can't wait till this Rome gets the bugs worked out.... but to be on topic it is a pretty good daily rom.

I will only comment on a few items because we could go about this all day with really no positive outcome and the thread will be hijacked.
First, I am not doing anything wrong. This is not my first rodeo. Yes, I know about the battery "conditioning" steps at the end of your post. This is part of flashing 101. With what I am running on my phone it just wasn't the life I needed it to be.
With that said I agree with you on CM9 exceeding expectations. Great rom but OP was looking for a stable rom and beta versions have bugs.
We can agree to disagree and put it to rest?

ICS Frustration

So I've been alternating between multiple ICS roms and Bamf gb and I just can't stay with Ics. I absolutely love all the ICS roms, but my battery life won't get me through a work day. Even with data off and only sending a few text messages it lasts about 6 hours. I first used the ics firmware and one of the older ics leaks and had horrible battery life. I just tried the newest leak with gb fw and still its horrible. Am I doing something wrong? Why is my battery half of what it was on gb?
In short why can't I have good battery life on ICS?

In short: because its not done yet, which is why they haven't released it yet.
Why do so many people claim they get the same or equal battery life? With so much fairly polished in it I wish battery life was better.

My battery life is just fine on ICS and I have no heat problems either.... but its definitely been very hit or miss.
There are probably a few different hardware revisions out by now, and the various issues are probably affecting only certain phones and not others because of slight differences between them.
If you are one of those people who are having problems, best thing you can do is wait until HTC releases the final ICS build..
any idea why text messages would cause reboots on ICS ROM's?
it shouldn't period. never had that happen. sounds like a bad flash, dirty flash
nsd combination of radios/firmware or a mix. I'd backup, run the latest ruu,clear/reset through bootloader, flash newest amon recovery, wipe everything, flash rom/kernel and firmware patch depending on which you chose. if using new firmware use the 5/2 radios to reduce heat. hopefully you're s-off to do all that

CleanRom DE Vs SlimRom, Which is better/More Stable?

I had to start this thread up because I am considering either one of these roms as my stable daily.
In my week of research after owning my Rezound, these are the best De-Sensed ICS roms out there.
I wanna know though, what are the main differences betweeen Slim Rom and Clean Rom DE?
I cant really see a difference accept, that I prefer the ICS theme on SlimRom as it takes the rom to almost AOSP in appearance.
I want something that is super fast, Clean and looks the most AOSP as possible.
It also has to be stable.
Please advise
only primary difference is slimrom has the most updated leak but cleanrom de is probably the most aosp in appearance
SlimROM ran smoother for me when I ran it.
Also consider CleanROM won't probably be updated any longer as Scott is gone.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Scott did say he'll come update when official ICS comes out...not sure if that's still the case or not.
I think Scott has a Google Nexus now so I don't know if he'll take time to rebase his CleanRom when ICS is released.

Cleanrom de. It has more options and is smoother and more AOSP like
I would also recommend tonked Rom. It's not here. He put it up on the bamf site. I'm running it now and It's beyond smooth. I think it was right at 300mb size wise so it's pretty slimmed down

IMO, Slim Rom is the best rom out right now, that is still being maintained. By far. I get shockingly great battery life with this rom in comparison to any other rom I've ran for this phone. And it has pilots themes which are always incredible. Also, tether will work on any rooted rom as long as its setup properly. But it's easy enough to flash roms so give them both a try for a few days and see which one you prefer.

What kind of batter life are we talking here with how much usage? Ive been on a quest for better battery life and I've yet to find a ROM that is satisfactory.
I was running Tonked and liked it, but got a bit of flashitis and am running Nils business right now. I don't think I will keep it for too long as the battery life isnt any better, maybe worse but too soon to tell, and I don't think I like sense very much.

Well as I don't have exact figures for you I can tell you that the battery drain while screen is off is almost non-existent. On all of my previous ROMS I ran I would always turn off LTE unless I was going to be downloading something so I could save on battery life. WIth this rom I have LTE on 100% of the time and have far better battery life than I did when 3G was enabled on other roms. Also, when I play temple run the battery drain is almost cut in half and possibly even more compared to other roms. I use my phone constantly throughout the day and would always have my phone charging at my desk at work, but with slim rom I can easily last the whole day until I go to bed with heavy use and off the charger. I have no idea why that rom is so much better for me, but it is. Huge difference from any other rom.
I think slim rom is under 240MB...all of the normal sense stuff is ripped out and it runs amazingly. How hard is it to create a backup and flash a new rom? Just give it a try.

Oh its not at all and I will. I was just curious. I'm sure you've seen plenty of people, like I have, that say they get amazing battery life and then they post a screenshot and you see the screens never on or something like that.
I'm backing up right now as I was getting pretty terrible battery life from the Sense Rom I was running. Maybe it was still settling but its full day 2 on the ROM and no improvement, for me that's not worth waiting to see what little improvement I may get from it.

Rezound on ICS(Battery life sucks?)

So i got a used rezound, and it is on Stock GB, and thinking about keeping it that way. This is because last phone i updated to ICS, battery got like 1/2 as much time as on GB, and not sure if same will occur with rezound. If i go ics, will for sure flash to NEOMAX, but idk, what are your opinions?
Thanks, let me know
In general with theirs a few initial concerns
1) is it auto-sync disabled
2) is any app causing the phone to wake up when not in use? ( betterbatterystats can check )
3) do you have a strong cellular signal -> if not you would use wifi
4) is google auto-backup disabled?
5) do typically use auto-brightness/low levels for the display?
Had stock GB for like 2 days as I learned the Rezound, upgraded, ICS defidently got better battery life. But that might be because the second I got ICS I went to a rom.
ICS rom pretty much doubled GB battery life. RezRom was amazing with the battery life, and now Neo's Adrenaline is doing almost twice as good with the screen on time now that I use wifi more often.
So yeah, I recommend upgrading, you can always revert if you're REALLY intent on gingerbread
We'll get ICS kernel at some point ( hopefully soon ) and see an even greater boost i'm sure
what rom are u using?

Opinions on best rom

I'm trying to get opinions on rooms in terms of battery life and performance for my evo 3d. I've been reading mostly about MeanROM, Venom, and of course cyanogenmod. The biggest problem that I have is that all of the reviews I've read are pre-ICS so I'm not one hundred prevent certain that the information I'm reading is up to date and I'm not misinformed or doing myself a disservice.
I do appreciate any help that people can provide and thank you in advance.

I've found that using KingCobra3D-ICS 1.6 | 3.28.631.1 | 4.0.3 | SENSE 3.6/AOSP | AROMA has been the best.
I currently have it set to AOSP and even have Google Now and the JB Keyboard (including dictionary) installed on the device and I get about 10 hours out of 1 charge.
In my experience, battery life is more dependent on what apps you run and how you use the phone (Internet browsing, email sync, etc.) than the ROM itself. Turning GPS on/off can also affect battery life, and nothing draws power more than trying to get a radio connection with a weak or non-existent signal (as in basements of buildings). Being aware of what draws battery power and avoiding those apps, settings and situations will affect battery life more than the choice of which custom ROM you use.
If you really want to compare battery life between different ROM's, I would suggest flashing then as vanilla as possible and and install/use only the apps you really need to be functional such as phone dialer, text messaging, email and Internet, at least for a day or two.
Battery life isn't my number one priiority when choosing a ROM since I have an extended battery, but it's still a consideration.

Ramjet, what is your priority when choosing a ROM? I mean I already do all of the recommended stuff for battery life, however I am constantly on my phone for either work or school now (returning for my masters). The biggest problem I have is that I can tell I'm going to have is that I will be pretty much active from 6am to about 10pm every day. During work hours it is difficult for me to be near a charger and during some of the classes charging my phone is not an option.
My biggest problem has been with ICS since the update. Due to the fact that my phone was encrypted, the ICS update from Sprint killed my 4g. At that point I kind of gave up with the basic build rom and figured I would try another ROM out there.

I currently have it set to AOSP and even have Google Now and the JB Keyboard (including dictionary) installed on the device and I get about 10 hours out of 1 charge.

Captain, thank you for your suggestion; I will read up on it later today/tonight to see if it is what I am looking for. One more question for you if you don't mind. How is the JB Keyboard? I have yet to play with it and am curious to how it works/feels. Is it as good or better than Swype? I'm a huge fan of that keyboard so if have compared both I would be interested in hearing your opinion.
Thank you again
I'd steer clear of any ROM claiming to enable the second core all the time. They talk about battery life when the screen is off, but when it's on it blows.
CM9 is pretty good, but for HTC Cool ICS probably runs things the best.

My priorities are:
1. Things that I need work and work correctly (camera, 4G, texting, email, browser)
2. Stabilty (no crashes when I am using the phone)
3. Performance (I like a responsive phone)
4. Battery life (not a big one for me with an extended battery)
5. Features not included in stock ROM
6. Customization options (themes, icon packs, etc.)
I've had pretty good luck with MeanROM GB and MeanROM ICS, but still need to be careful about what apps and mods get added. If the built-in battery stats don't give you enough information, you can get BetterBatteryStats for free here on XDA, and the paid version of SystemPanel keeps pretty good history about battery usage by app. You might also want to consider an extended or spare battery.

Good points, I actually think that you pretty much laid out what my priorities are that I am looking for. I ordered an extended battery the other day, but I honestly use my phone from everything from an extended USB to GPS to calculator to everything else. I think the only thing I don't try to do is start fires and cook dinner with it. I've written down your suggestions and will look at it when I get home later.
Thank you again for taking time out the help me with this.
For my two cents I would suggest common butter its ics no issues really stable and a very laid back community. Also the dev is only 15 but his work is really good and stable I've had no issues so far really good battery life I also use my phone for everything. Plus the mods u want to add are pre included
commonsense butter hboot1.58 soff
My favorite Sense roms have been Viper Rom IC3D (The OC Daemon is pretty sweet) and Common Sense. If you want an AOSP build, I'd suggest Unicorn Porn AOKP. I've ran that rom for several months and had no issues with it.

Let me throw in a couple more from Team Imagika: Homebrew & Zr3dxl.

I've been quite happy with d3rp for some time now. But, I'm starting to branch out and try new things... we'll see how that works!
I thank you all for your suggestions. It looks like I will be doing a ton of reading this labor day weekend.
i think evoler is the best, i m glad !
I have best expirience with Cool ics v12. Tried almost all gsm roms for my evo 3d, and for now, only cool ics worked flawlessly.
For me MIUI 2.8.31 is best rom now
i used cool ics it's really good but i wanna give mwakious a try:highfive:
These threads only create problems cause everyone has their own opinion on what's best. Locking this down and any other what's the best rom thread
