so its ot that im new to rooting or anything but this is the first time i have to do this. The redemption rom my my inspire 4g says to dirty flash and i know what it is im just not sure what to wipe and what not to wipe?
well there should be instructions on how to install the rom because the dev should want more people to flash without troubles.
Normally i would go to the rom's home thread and read a few pages of comments because you arent the only one having this problem and xda is all about research, not clogging up forums with post.
But.... since im a nice guy..
wipe cache,
wipe dalvik cache,
dont wipe data.
the point is to flash over the rom.
thank u robogoflow it was my question too

So I recently moved from Team Whiskey's ROMs for the Vibrant to CM7 Nightlie #22. So far have been absurdly impressed with it. However, the next day ( today ), #23 came out.
I've tried glancing around the interwebs for advice on the subject, but nothing is really clear. Tend to have noticed that about CM7, is the help and wiki for it tend to be a bit vague and what not.
Anywho, I'm mostly curious to what is the most painfree way of updating to the newest nightlie? ROMManager Premium or Clockwork Mod method are both known to me. I can easily do either one, but I am more trying to figure out which one would be the less work? Would both methods leave me having to redownload all the applications and restore backups each time I update to a newer version of CM7?
Use rommanager premium.easy as pie.

1. download the latest nightly and put it in root of sd card
2. boot the phone into clockwork recovery
3. select install zip from sd card
4. and it will update the rom easy breezy

So no wiping? .....

when using rom manager prem, make sure u pick vibrantMTd and 3x NOT 2x. And for ur first cm7 nightlie always choose all 3! wipe dalvik, wipe data, backup roms. And when u update ur cm7 nightlie then u only have to choose 2 of the 3 but to be better off always wipe ur first cm7 nightlie.
Movieaddict, I already have CM7 on my phone. Was asking if an update to a newer nightlie had to wipe my phone for each install. I.r. Having to reinstall apps and all, etc.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
u do not need to wipe anything just load on and flash the latest nightly
so if its not ur first nightlie, then u should know theyll aks u if u want to wipe data? yes or no??
Movieaddict, two problems I am getting out of your posts. One, you're contradicting what Kin says, and two, you don't seem to be reading what I am posting.
I said I just went from Team Whiskey's ROM to CM7 Nightlie #22. The next day, #23 came out. I am considering installing it, I know both methods to do so, but my question, and apparently the question of the internet that is so hard to get answered, was if updating from an older/previous nightlie to a newer one would require a wipe and having to reinstall all apps and restore data, etc.
Again, Kin gave a clear answer. But then you contradicted it again.. So.. I'm now back to square one, confused and unwilling to update until I have a better reply. So far you haven't been too helpful. Mind if I get advice from someone else?

Read that quote very carefully! U came from cm7 #22 correct, so if ur updating it and not installing it for the first time then u dont have to do a wipe data. As i say in my quote above in rom manager premium they will ask u to check off 3 things wipe data, wipe dalvik and backup rom as i said before. and if ur just updating to #23 then only choose wipe dalvik and backup rom but i said that already in the quote above from my earlier post. I dont know if i can make it any clearer?
again when u updating ur nightly wiping is not neccesary because all the neccesary info/component is already on ur phone and updating the nightly just only add new things to it so wiping are not neccesary and no all ur data and apps will still be there because ur only updating not flashing an entire new rom

Yes, but as I said. I cannot trust your opinion due to how you didn't apparently read my posts, and contradicted other replies. I'm not going to risk my phone and data on such an iffy set of circumstances.
So, I'll wait until someone else wanders in here and verifies.
people like u make me wanna not wanna help people ur very unappreciative! I made it very clear. Not worth my time...................

Many people do just in case since something happens. Just backup everything first!
IMO...

i would. if you don't, you might get stuck in a bootloop. some roms don't require you to (ie...CM updates). but even then, it doesn't hurt to do it after so many CM updates. now, if you don't want to lose your data, i'd recommend using titanium backup...if you haven't already.
Rule of thumb would be as follows:
Wipe Dalvik.
Wipe cache.
Factory/data reset.
Flash ROM.
Wipe Dalvik.
Wipe cache.
Factory data/reset.
This should keep you safe. Only takes an extra minute to do.
Some ROM's will wipe for you, but I always do a manual wipe first anyway.
hey thanks alot guys just wasnt sure but i dnt ever see the wipe dalvik option am i missing something

Hello! i am in the process of finding a rom that i like (unrelated) and have found one that seems pretty good (ShiftS3ns3) but a lot of the comments state that the rom works really well with the leankernel, but the only problem is that i am not sure how to go about combining the kernel and the rom :/ would i flash the kernel first then the rom? or would i do rom first and then kernel? and when i flash these, would i clear cache, clear dalvik cache, clear data, format system for both? i usually do that for rom flashes, sorry if these are dumb questions thanks!

thanks! ive actually used that page multiple times already (just recently rooted my phone for the first time 3 days ago so fairly new to the scene, although experienced with linux so i have a basic understanding of what is going on lol) the only thing though is that i am confused about whether there is any order i should do it in? by that i mean would i do something like
clear dalvik cache, sys cache, data, format system
flash rom
clear dalvik cache, sys cache, data, format system
flash kernel? or would it be something different?

You at most need to wipe your caches, but nothing else. If you format data or system you'll need to reflash both. So flash your rom, them flash your kernel. You shouldn't have any problems. Your phone can't build the cache unless it's rebooted after a flash, so you shouldn't have to wipe anything.

i was using Saurom ROM at 1st and it worked perfectly for my galaxy note i717(this was my 1st attempt to root my phone and install a new rom), and i saw a better ics rom ("Onlyone" ics rom) at rootmygalaxynote.com, i flashed the new ics rom into my phone and it stuck at the samsung logo. i tried to re-install the ics rom again and same thing happened. So, i go back to re-install my old Saurom ROM. But when the phone get into the main screen, it is extremely laggy and eventually freeze, most of the cases, the phone reboot itself. i m so scare that the phone is not able to read any rom now. and i am new to smart phone, can any Brother and Sister in this Forum can me get through this. i m so

^This.
Sounds like you're not wiping properly between flashings.
And don't worry OP. XDA can help you through just about anything!
When flashing a new rom you should being doing the factory reset/data wipe, then wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache. Then flash the rom zip. I would only download roms from the xda post, and the dev usually posts instructions on how to flash it.
To flash the Only1 ICS rom...you must be coming from an earlier ICS build (UCLD3 or UCLC5). If not then this is what you need to do. Flash the UCLE2 leak thru ODIN first. Let it reboot and let it settle for about 5-10 mins. Then Flash CWM via ODIN again. Once that is done...you are ok to flash the Only1 ICS Rom.
You don't have to be coming from ICS to flash OnlyOne. Truth is most Devs have some sort of wipe built in for their ROMs. OnlyOne Dev does not. All you have to do is wipe data/factory reset and then install the OnlyOne ROM. Unless I am wrong, wiping data also wipes cache. Simple as that.
sounds like paranoid anticipation not letting your dv cache and system files build. Since you said both times Samsung logo... I don't think you waited long enough... Plus use flapps first. Then if you wanna have problems to fix, try other roms... In my opinion.
Btw.. Use our development section to get the original content... Not some link from another website redirecting eventually to us anyway.

Hi. I am using NeatROM lite 4.8. I downloaded the 23 toggles zip file (XWLSW_Stock_23Toggles_BS.zip). How do I install it? My first thought was to just install the zip from the external sd card in Recovery like I did with the ROM, but I thought I'd better ask first, in case that's wrong or I miss a step. Sorry for seeming stupid, but like most beginners, I am afraid of a big screw-up (for beginners, every screw-up seems to be a near-fatal :crying and so need to be very literal and follow precise steps. Later on, I hope I can make the intuitive leaps and guesses like more experienced folks.
I should also ask how to remove or go back to normal NeatROM lite if something goes horribly wrong.

-for install it u have to go in recovery mode and than flash it like a rom (install zip or something similar)
-for return stock you have 2 way:
1) find a .zip that restore the stock theme
2) re-flash rom without wipe

thanks, I'll do this. question about reverting to the stock theme: why would one NOT wipe the cache before reflashing the ROM? Or should one wipe it after the re-install? I wiped the cache and dalvik cache after I originally put on NeatROM.
He means no wipe as in factory reset. All your data is lost if you do this so to not wipe is better for you. To wipe cache and dalv cache you wont loose data. I think one needs to read more then one would be better with one's android device.

Thank you for the clarification because wipe could mean cache wipe, dalvik cache wipe or factory reset. I would only do a factory reset as a last resort.
The toggles are installed now and I really like having them and being able to re-order them. It really amazes me that with all the useful and practical mods people here have done that more are not natively included from Android or the phone manufacturers. It's not like they lack talent or imagination ... is it ?
There are sooo many talented people on xda I wonder why Sam don't offer people jobs to do it for them. If you think that mod is good keep looking there is some amazing mods on here. Most do it for fun!! Sam devs should look at xda and hold there head in shame.
