ROMs-Help for new users - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I've had my s3 for a week now after having 2 yecars on the Milestone where I did ROMs and rooting and other stuff.
There are so many on the s3. Which one do I choose as I want a better battery life and performance but also still has touchwiz...
Could someone provide me with a guide if there is one for rooting and putting recovery on the device as I have no idea how it works on the s3.

Easy Peazzy......
Go to the Original Developement thread....find Chainfire Root/CW and flash the latest ones. Now your rooted
as for Roms i never recommend them as i can find something GOOD to say about almost all of them, we have good Devs here right now. so just flash away and see what fits your user profile.

Honestly i have seen any Rom that has better battery life by a big enough margin to say its that great. The Kernels is where i see the most battery improvement, no OC w/UV helps out. but the battery on this phone has been Impressive on ANY rom.......just MAKE SURE to cycle the battery once for at least every rom battery is going to be a big factor.
im using MiUi right now........and i must say the it has the Worst battery that i have ran into on the S3, but i still get 13-14 hours with 3-4 hours of screen time.
Foxhound .8 with NEAKS Kernel i was getting 19-20 hours with 3-4 hours of screen time(with Light Flow) so besides MiUi Foxhound is my back up rom.

No OTA you will have to use Odin for your first Root/Flash or Mobile Odin. like i said if you go into the forum im SURE it is stickied.
Just Do It. It has instructions that you can follow that are certainly detailed enough to get it done quickely.....should take you all of 5-10 min to get root and CWM.

Took me 3 minutes! Which is the best kernel for battery? Are they easy to install?
My old phone had a locked bootloader

sorry for the super awesome n00b questions but...
once I have rooted the sgs3 with this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
must I flash roms with CWM or using ODIN??
can I flash any official firmware (like the last one of UK) with Odin? and no additional steps are needed? (I think I have clear after flash any official firmware I have to root again with the same guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238)?
srrybadenglish D:

Easy answer.....is, it really depends on what you are flashing.
MOST things come in CWM flashable Zips, but some kernels and stock roms come in .tars which you will need odin or Mobile odin to get onto your phone....both are safe and both are easy.

Future GB roms

I've been reading a lot of threads about the ups and downs of ics, I'm yet to flash it and might stay on gb for a little while especially since I've been reading threads were people have tried to go back to gb and weren't able to do to either user error or otherwise. I'm wondering if the gb development will lose support do to ics being out, I'm sure it will especially once ics becomes more stable across the board.

Dude, just flash ICS already. It's pretty freakin' sweet.
I find ICS alot more enjoyable than GB even if it's just a leak : it's stable enough to be a daily rom, and I work alot with my phone.
I found ics to be far to buggy go me. Flash the unofficial. I love it. And they're coming out with a I've ROM soon

I'd like to try it but not at the risk of not being able to go back. I've heard of several issues a few of which i wouldnt be able to deal with, YouTube not working right and poor call quality...my area is bad enough as it is.

ICS is amazing. Much better than GB. Not sure how people are having problems with youtube as I've flashed the Odin ICS and the saurom ICS with no problems. I've actually had zero app issues.

Nash...dont flash it. Just stick with GB roms until official ICS is released. Save yourself the trouble.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
I've used both extensively. I've been on ICS for months on my atrix. That's the biggest thing i disliked about switching to the note. Oh, and no notification light!
ICS is far more polished than GB. Its finally android that looks pretty. GB development is probably mostly dead.

is there a difference between the 2 ways to flash ics, odin/cwm? I believe flashing thru cwm keeps root but not sure about the other one. I wonder if one is buggier then the other.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
I can't say for sure, but from what I have read and my personal experience, installing the one click exe first, then cwm, then the custom ROMs is a good way to go. I did this and have zero issues.

What do you mean by first installing via one click than cwm? Did you install it twice or both ways?

The one click ICS leak is a stock image. It formats the ENTIRE internal SD card. You will lose everything including root and recovery.

So did you use (and recommend) flashing via cwm?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
If you flash through Odin it formats your drive and no root. But it's not an issue to root it. However if you flash the.collectives basic build or dagr8 build through cwm you'll have.root, and it'll be debloated
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
What I am trying to say overall is that I have read about less issues with phones who did the following:
1) Install one click Odin Leak (reboot and let it all set up of course)
2) Install CWM Recovery via Odin
3) Flash Dag or Collective ICS ROM
These steps will give you all the components of ICS (including bootloaders etc), CWM, rooted and debloated.
There does seem to be one person who can't get back to GB after doing this. But there are multiple threads in the QA section which show otherwise. I have not tried going back to GB yet, as I am giddy every time I use my phone now. ICS has brought it to another level. No way I am ever looking back, especially with something from the Collective on the way.
I installed and rooted ICS very easily
now i wish i hadnt , My ICS is wayyyyyyyy to buggy for me, i get alot of FC's and reboots, wish i had waited and now want to go back to GB but im just going to wait out the bugginess till a more stable rom comes out. I can say when ICS is running good it is way smoother than GB but that isnt too often with me but good news is the collective has something cooking up and should only be a little bit before changing out this leaked rom !!!
just my $.02

forgive me for being a dumb a$$ but I'm slightly confused about the steps you posted. Wouldn't step 2 have to come first, and i thought the Odin one click was the ics rom (step 3)? Here's what I've done to my phone. Rooted, installed cwm and completed a cwm back up, i than downloaded ics from the picture in the dev section onto my phone. From this point would all i have to do is go into cwm and flash my downloaded ics and would that sort of be your 1,2,3 steps? Sorry for not fully understanding.

Battery draining faster with ICS update

I just upgraded my SGS2 to ICS, since that the battery of my phone draining hell lot quicker than earlier. Earlier it use to go down by 1-2 % in the night (when m sleeping) but after update it go down by 11-12%
actually the battery performance should be better, right?

Hi,
I have same feeling. After a week on Slim Ics I can say that with GB my battery life was better. By 10pm everyday I was having left about 40-45% with GB , but with ICS the best I can get is :confuse 30% , mostly about 25% left and I'm having same kind of usage. It's true that with ICS it seems smoother and more responsive .

A fair price to pay.
There are a lot of threads on thus subject if you have a search of the forums.
I had the same issue on upgrading from GB but after following advice and doing some investigation and troubleshooting of rogue apps I now have much better battery life on ics than I ever got on GB.
Read the forums and follow the advice, track down the culprits and you too will reap the benefits

There are LOTS of threads on the subject. Use the search box at the top of the page to look for "battery ics sgs2" or similar and you will turn up pages of information.
The sad thing is the best piece of advice I found was that no two people will have exactly the same solution. You need to identify what is eating your battery using a tool like "Better Battery Stats" or "Go Power Manager". You then need to decide how important the culprits are and remove them or look for updates.
Titanium Backup is useful as it allows you to freeze apps so you can see if they make a difference. It helps if you are rooted as I found several stock apps at the core of my issues. You can't freeze them unless you are rooted.
Siyah Kernel is also very useful, it seems to manage power better than stock. I also found that a factory reset, clearing user data and clearing all of my caches (including Dalvik) helped enormously. It is time consuming to re-install all of your apps from scratch but it does seem to make a huge difference. It looks like some apps retain data from GB that caused issues in ICS.
I found that exchange services were using a huge amount of juice before I cleared all data and caches. That seems to stop completely after the big clear out!
The main thing is no two people seem to have exactly the same problem. It is important therefore that you take a problem solving approach, change one thing at a time and wait long enough to see if it works.
There's your bone, go chew!

i usually get 2 days of battery life on ics 4.0.3....
First of all, you need to be clear whether you upgraded from stock GB to Stock ICS, or a Custom GB ROM to a Custom ICS ROM, since the Custom ROMs do offer better battery life over the stock version.
People here are giving great advice regarding the use of Titanium to freeze any apps that you are not using, e.g. Google+, Samsung bloatware, etc... - this will save the average RAM, hence the battery life. Also, do use Task Manager often (especially before going to sleep) to kill all the background apps.
I installed many Custom ROMs and now running Resurrection v2.1 and very happy with battery life. You must be realistic with expectations - read this http://blog.gsmarena.com/our-samsun...e-test-is-complete-check-out-how-it-did-test/
Overall, if you will do a clean install (format everything - internal/external/MMC and clear cache/Dalvik/battery stats) of Resurrection ICS v2.1 or Litening v3.2, then you should see even an increase in battery life!
Hope it helps and happy flashing ;]]

[Q] [VZN] Battery life is awesome but

I've never had a stock phone stay stock this long. It will be a whole week tomorrow . I see that we can root this locked bootloader by Verizon but am afraid to ruin my great battery life ( 32 hours of normal use still 5% left). I understand that rooting alone will not change much but I would flash custom roms. Has anyone else have or had the same dilemma? If you did it and flashed some of the custom roms, how is your battery?

I flashed the route66 ROM on my first boot simply to root it so I could use free wireless tether(I have grandfathered unlimited data).
I then debloated the ROM & now I'm completely happy with it.
This thing runs so well I have no desire whatever to flash another ROM, & I use to flash like crazy.
I rooted and flashed the beans rom just to get the 50gb of free dropbox space then flashed the stripped rom and my batter life is great! I was at about 60% battery last night after a full day of normal use.
This is all Verizon, right? Why can't the team be separate threads for different carriers. This is such a mess.

Looking to root and install CWM so I can install a different modem.

Thanks for your answer, maybe I'll root and unroot then.
I've spent the last 3-4 years flashing probably dozens of roms to improve all manner of phones, the S2 is the 1st phone I've had that I'm happy with the standard roms and samsung seem to be pretty swift at getting updates out.

[Q] Stock 4.1.2 battery life with DS Battery Saver and Greenify

Hello, does anyone can confirm better battery life using DS Battery Saver and Greenify together? I use them both on 4.1.2 on my Galaxy Note 8.0 and i got battery life almost doubled as in screen off state it doesn't even take a 1% !!! Really. As long as it is in sleep mode it rarely take 1% during 24 hrs. Of course i clear memory in task manager as well to be sure all is wiped out.
Still having 2.3.6 on my SGS2 and i can get 7-9 days per single charge (with DS Battery Saver on), but i use it as a phone and occasionally, 2-3 times on wifi to update apps or calendar events (less than 2 minutes) and sometimes browse internet for something quickly via 3g, maybe 5-10 minutes per charge. Little music which takes no more than 3% (means 2-3 hrs) per charge. So my needs are not demanding, and i can achieve usual 6-7 days per charge.
What I want is some Jelly Bean features I'm happy with on my Note 8.0 and mostly I cannot use Greenify on my SGS2.
Correct if I'm wrong, but if almost everyone suffer bigger battery drain on JB, comparing to GB, if I use DS Battery Saver and Greenify will this compensate battery drain and let my SGS2 battery last at least comparably to what I have now?
Using better battery stats what seems to be the main battery loss culprit on your devices?

I don't know, never used it, but as I mentioned, I noticed huge battery life improvement using Greenify, too.
Well, I use DS battery saver on both devices, and I guess it is mainly DS Battery Saver thing to preserve battery on Note 8, but using it on SGS2 doest make as good work as on Note 8.
Maybe it is a cause of 2G/3G module I don't have on Note 8. Writing it I'm almost sure it is the thing! While Note 8 cannot be use as phone it doesnt search for a phone signal and this may drain battery during Deep Sleep mode. And Greenify probably won't do that much here. Right?

I can't. I'm on GB, need to have JB to install it, and this is my first question, if both apps will be able to compensate massive JB battery drain people were talking about? I want at least 5-6 days in my usage.

There is a lot to do to try JB (root, cwm, all apps and stuff) to get one app to try and then revert to GB again.... that's why I post it

I don't want to use your thread as debate session but why would you not want to root and custom recovery?[emoji53] I can most assuredly tell you that your loss / battery drain is do to bloatware and old firmware that can be upgraded and debloted to give you better performance and maximize the device.. Just a thought to consider no worries. [emoji16]

Got it rooed, bloarware removed, just have stuff i badly need. Seems all fine on GB right now, but there is something what drains battery 3 to 5% per night in deep sleep, almost no wakelocks (except for DS Battery Saver ones). But I wonder if it is caused by 2g/3g module comparing to no2g/3g module on my Note 8? Maybe if SGS2 doesn't have this module my battery drain will be 0% during night as it is on Note 8, hahah? Is there a way to disable it on SGS2, because airplane mode doesn't make it?

I would install the program I listed and check out the stats under partial waklocks and kernel wakelocks. Just so I understand how long are you getting on the S2?? Let's just focus on that. Your other device is a beast and quite honestly I think your comparing apples to elephants. No offence.. [emoji109]

It is regular i9100, carrier Play (Poland). And you misunderstood... I am happy, but I want to switch to JB to get some unique features and this why I asked if those two aforementioned apps I use on my Note8 do the job and prevent massive battery drain on JB people are talking about.

Gotcha. I used to have Gs2 and I rooted it at the time I only knew of cwm. But I soon left GB and plunged into jb with both feet. Didn't regret it one bit. Once you leave as you know coming back if your not happy can take some doing. I would do my homework on my device and know every little nook and cranny. And I would download either a flashable stock ROM or Odin flashable stock 2.3.6 prior have it secured on ext sd so you can revert if your not happy. I myself use twrp but I'm on the note2 so its a bit different. I think there is a version of twrp on xda for your device can't remember if there's angi kernel that's compatible with GS2 but its worth checking into. And my last peice of advice is in flashing. Always do a full wipe internal as well dalvik etc. And give the device a settle in period. Clean master is a great tool. Its on playstore . also don't know if you ever heard of xposed but its also really great I think its compatible check it out as well. It all takes some doing but in the end I think you'll be happy.[emoji16][emoji106]

Did same things on mine, I think we are on the same level, althou I'm not into custom roms. Well, I did a nand backup via cwm and stock recovery, just to be sure, so I can revert back to what I have now, with every little detail, right? So did you update your S2 to JB and no complaints on battery drain?
Using clean master too! And I use Xposed but on Note 8. What for to use it on S2?

You have to download a stock 2.3.6 GB that can be used in Odin on your PC If you want to revert Jb is a different file table [emoji53] Your GB restore will not restore from from jb you can find a stock GB from sammobile.com or on xda you need to read up on this stuff before you flash away. Look in the forum what's 100% compatible? What are other users experiencing? Xposed has tons and tons of framework that can be used but you gotta read read read. And you really need to read about flashing and file types and what's 100 compatible with your specific carrier and model.. [emoji106][emoji16]

The file types have to match.
Here's a basic example of a user trying to revert..

So I Odin my stock firmware, install CWM and then restore backup via CWM. Isn't Nand Backup a sort of partition image? That way it should be restored no matter what firmware you're on, as It should clear entire memory and replace it with your backup. That's how it works on PC
