For linux and mac you have to use Heimdall but to my knowledge it is not compatible with the Note I717.

Anyone else? Thanks....

Anyone running Linux? Maybe use Odin running in the Wine environment?

Don't have one but may just go ahead and install XP.
Thing is, that's also proving difficult as I don't have an optical drive and I'm having bootmgr issues with the USB bootable I made.

the heimdall version 1.3.1 works with the note.

I thought I read on another post it works with Macs but unfortunately not with Linux/Ubuntu. I use Ubuntu also, so it would be great if it did work.

Don't boot XP man. Your just going to run into compatibility issues.

Heimdall 1.3.2 broke compatibility for several devices. In most case it is recommended that you use version 1.3.1 instead.Version 1.3.1 works for me ( Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise )

Thanks all... will have to do me some learnin' heimdall

Latest Version of Odin?

Any idea which version of Odin is the most recent? Last I saw officially was 1.7 but I've seen 1.8/1.8.2 in some downloads but would rather not download a trojan.
It doesn't really matter because 1.3 is the only version that works properly with our devices as far as I know anyway.
Ah, thanks.

I would suggest you learn about heimdall. There's a nice sticky in this very forum to help you too.
Heimdall is much more reliable than odin and the frontend has a bunch of failsafes built in to prevent you from accidentally doing dumb things like you can in odin.
Anyway, just a suggestion.

If someone does a dumb thing with odin, its because they're dumb, not odin. 2 buttons, not hard.

Ubuntu.img through vnc...

Has anyone successfully installed a ubuntu image with vnc on cyanogen? I've tried a bunch of guides and images without success. Could someone point me to a link?
Closest I got was from here:
www.nerd65536.com/2011/07/installing-ubuntu-in-android-version-2.html?m=1
I got the chroot access but everytime I tried to do something it said segmentation fault.
Thanks!

Yes, I have Ubuntu 10.10 on mine. Needless to say I don't use it much because I was so used to webtop but if I really want I can. look up the 10.10 Ubuntu guide on the galaxy s2 works like a charm on cm7.

Nice attitude.
This has all been laid out for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348 (read the mac note).
In the guides, you use Heimdall in place of Odin. If the latest built Heimdall doesn't work, then you will need to compile it from github.
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
This is all at your own peril.
Otherwise, you might have to consider using a Windows machine or juggle a Ubuntu VM (again at your own peril).
Or find a friend or family member with windows
