[Q] Any way to reset Odin counter yet? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

My question is basically what the title asks. Is there any way to reset the Odin counter yet? Apparently Triangle Away does not work yet for Sprint's S3 (but it does work for the international I believe). Does anyone know if chainfire is working on making the AT&T/T-Mobile/Sprint/Verizon versions compatible? Or does anyone know any other ways? I tried using the USB Jig I use for my Epic 4G Touch but it does not work.

And what makes the AT&T variant special that they can avoid tripping the counter?

What?

that would be cool if they had a reset counter for tmobiles gs3.

The AT&T variant has a method to flash a custom recovery without tripping the flash counter. I'm just wondering what's different about that phone that allows this.

wow 2 threads in a row I'm tired of seeing posted...
Here I think this could be of some help.. https://twitter.com/ChainfireXDA. And as he says a few posts back the hardware is completely different between these and the international version. As of now he doesn't know if and when triangle away will be available for us. With that link you'll be the first to know. I'm sure if the counter gets reset he'll be the 1 to do it. And all the methods that don't trip the counter involve installing a rooted system which in itself doesn't trip the counter and then manually flashing tha recovery via adb

Just to clarify: all methods i have seen involve installing a "stock" roms, with root injected, via ODIN. The counter sees these types of roms as an official rom. Flashing anything goes else via ODIN trips the counter. However, once you have root you can use adb or dd in a terminal emulator to load a custom recovery or just load mobile ODIN. You can the use either of these to flash any custom rom without tripping the counter.

Yes, this is true. But I guess we all add to our counter initially by flashing CWM through Odin when rooting, which our phone registers as an insecure kernel.

So why is this not possible on the Sprint S3? Or is it possible now?

FYI, I'm working on creating this file for T-Mobile GS3. If successful, I might try to create it for other carriers as well but will need help testing the files with the caveat that I might trigger your counter, I might brick your phone, and I might cause your phone to come alive and eat your dog.

I didn't find this forum and the method of rooting without tripping the counter until I had already loaded two roms. I can do an exchange at AT&T for a different color phone for $35 within the next 30 days. Should I get a new phone and start fresh or not worry about it and hope that Chainfire figures out a solution?

Chainfire will most likely find a way to reset it, but I don't think you'd be able to exchange with an activated counter. The counter really doesn't matter unless you want to get your phone replaced or something. Jigs used to help us reset the counter for the S2 even while the phone was off but now jigs don't work and the only way is Triangle Away for the S3

Hmm I though CWM was flashed through adb not odin? With CWM installed I get a black screen with a unlock symbol and the words "Custom" underneath the lock before the boot-up animation and under setup>phone info>status it has Device Status 'Modified' but nothing about an unsecure kernel.

If you root with Entropy512's stock plus root package, as referenced above, you will completely avoid the yellow triangle and flash count. If you then want to install custom software, ROM and/or Kernel, without invoking the yellow triangle or flash count, you can then install a clockworkmod enabled kernel using either adb from your pc, or Android Terminal Emulator on your phone. You can flash anything from clockworkmod recovery without invoking the yellow triangle or incrementing the flash counter.

Good tip, thx. Question: will Entropy512's "stock plus root package" given permanant root (including /system)... or is SuperOneClick needed for the su files?

Permanent root - really all superoneclick does on our devices is use ADB to push su and Superuser.apk to the right locations and then chmod them properly.
So the end result after it is the same thing as having them in the right places to begin with, which is what my prerooted system package does.
Sweet, love the response. Now, one last question to this: if I use entropy stock and rom package and avoid the exclamation mark fully, will I still be marked as a violator of the device warranty?

If you flash the unrooted stock image and then do a wipe from stock recovery, it SHOULD be undetectable.

Maybe so in the past. Thanks to the abuse from ppl like you, AT&T will now charge you for the full price if they later determined that your phone is not covered by warranty any more due to either abuse or false claims.

[Q] Question to all devs and fellow community..

would it possible to create an automated script that roots your existing rom like what this genetlemen sfhub has done over there in the ept4g forum...this avoids upping the counter and the birth of the yellow triangle..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
or a one click odin..im guessing he took a tar that is completely stock and just added root, everything is basically automated after opening the .exe ...you guys can check that out here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1694695
I brung this to attention so maybe someone could get idea to hopefully bypass upping the counter and the entrance of the yellow doom
Upping the counter isn't really an issue, we have a reset for it, and also a way of flashing CWM without upping it. And once you have CWM, you can flash ROMs without upping the counter. And the yellow triangle isn't doom, it's just a form of download mode where you can still flash back to stock using ODIN and give it another go. The process of rooting is already pretty simple, all it takes is flashing CWM through ODIN and then superuser through CWM. That process is good to learn if you're coming from stock anyways, as it gets you used to using ODIN and CWM. Also, unless you're on stock, the other ROMs are already pre-rooted when you flash them.
Sorry, not trying to rain on your parade, just saying it would be work for a developer that isn't really necessary. Who knows though, maybe if one of them wants it they will build it.

Reset flash counter (can't install triangle away)

Hi
I have a SIII, international version. My touch screen is not responding (hardware problem), but is displaying everything. System is working, hard and soft buttons also.
I want to send it in service, BUT, I had it rooted. Found my stock rom from my region, flash it with Odin, got rid of the root but I can't reset the flash counter. I can't install triangle away without touch working.
I don't know either if after flash the usb debugging is on or not, for using ADB (if it works). I am guessing is not.
Any ideas ?
Your supposed to use triangle away before flashing firmware you need root

I know that now. But even if I can use odin + CF to root it again, I still can not use triangle away.
Question, how I get rid of root CW+root after reseting (asuming I'll find a way), flashing again will not increase the counter ?

Every flash of custom roms/kernels from your your pc to the phone will raise the flash counter. Only flashes done with/on the phone don`t raise the counter. Unroot it , send it in and cross your fingers. Try doing a factory reset after unrooting. I once sent in a rooted and bricked I9000 and it got repaired under warranty.

Edit: any other way to enable usb debugging, like from recovery ?
Use a USB-OTG cable and attach a USB mouse to it. Very bad replacement for touchscreens but should get the stuff done

[Q] Unroot i717 help

After extensive research, I have finally given up on looking for my answer.
Please have mercy on my tired soul for having to ask the next question:
Is there a way to unroot your phone without using Odin? My USB Port is damaged.
Thus, I am returning it to ATT warranty to get a new one.
I want to make sure that they won't be able to notice that the phone was rooted.
Stock rom, stock kernely; counter, the whole shibangbang.
Is there a way you can simply flash via CWM or..? Something that doesn't require a USB.
Any sort of direction or advice is much appreciated!
Thank you in advance, even if you don't have a response, thanks for reading.
Stock rom.

They can easily use an external battery to use the phone.
Then they'll see all the amazing mods.
I remember reading somewhere that you can do it with Mobile ODIN Pro from the play store, no PC required. You'll have to drop 5 bucks on it but I imagine that beats $500 on a new Note
Mobile Odin doesn't support the note. But you should double check me in case he made a version for us.
Ah I think you're right. I think what I read was for the international version. My mistake!
In the super everything stickie there was a method to return to stock without a PC. That should work for you.

Brother let me tell you what u have to do, either way if Ur usb port is screwed u have to keep Ur cell I'll tell ya why. First you are rooted. Second you probably flashed another rom. Third your flash counter. Why not buy a USB port and attempt the fix your self or take it to a repair shop near by u? The fix is cheap.
This happened to me my USB port was shorted and if u move the cable at a right position it would or wouldn't charge or USB to PC. Got lucky enough to flash, reset counter, and also flash recovery stock via adb. Shipped the phone next morning to att since I already received my replacement phone(which glass screen lens is cracked now) will fix it waiting for parts

I have an AT&T repair center in town here. I called AT&T for my issue, got them to say "yea ok we'll do a warranty on it" so I took the time to unroot it, return to stock reset the flash counter and after I waited for 15 minutes while the guy showed a blond how to load pictures onto her iphone he took a quick look at my phone, checked the notes on my account and handed me a refurb. he didn't boot it, didn't look at flash counter, nadda. so take it as you will. I would however flash a stock rom and remove your custom recovery but I'm not sure about dealing with the counter.
Download SUPER USER PRO from the google play and iinstall (course)on settings you should have the option to FULL UNROOT there see pictures!!!!!

[flash counter] reset flash counter with Odin?

Hi, so I've had problems with what appears to be 'sudden death' - random freezes - unfortunately I havent been able to reset the flash counter before it all went to hell.
I can now ONLY enter my Download mode. While connected with Odin I get a yellow box when my phone is 'added',
I tried to flash stock Android back on my phone. This failed so I now only get the message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue".
Only thing I want to do is reset the counter, so I can take it to Samsung. Otherwise I'm totally screwed. Any tips? :crying:

It's been ages since Sgs2 supported Jig-based counter reset: more specifically not since 4.x bootloader.
Flash counter can only be reset through TriangleAway which at leased did use a custom update.zip to modify the storage so you could flash it. Modern bootloaders for s3 however also have a red triangle which cannot be reset to date (afaik)

looks like im screwed. Found out: USB JIG does NOT reset the counter. This only worked on S2.
Talked to a guy at a phoneshop today, he said that 90% of the phones that have flash counts are still being repared by Samsung. So I see no other way than acting like nothing is up and see what Samsung will say.

I tried to flash 3 different stock ROMs with 3 different versions of Odin: 1.85, 3.05 and 3.07.
No succes. I brought it to a gsm repair shop. Hope they can do something. All I need is access Android to reset the counter, and then Samsung can have it if the problem still occurs.
If they can't fix it, I'm gonna send it anyway and hope for the best.
So I guess it's a case of bad luck; sudden death (random freezes) in combination with a rooted phone --> First reset your flash counter!!!
